"Father!" Forrest storms over to the older Nohrian with a righteous indigence, fist curled to his chest in anger, "Father, where have you been?! You haven't sent me a single letter in the past year! Why... I!"

Tears bubble at the edges of almond eyes, "I thought we had come to an understand Father, but if you are content to ignore me for a entire year, then perhaps I was wrong!"

The greenhouse courtyard is far too public a place for this.

Emerald eyes dart first left, then right, cataloguing the students and faculty milling around. Most avert their gazes, pretending to be engrossed in conversation or their own thoughts. Leo sighs inwardly; details of this familial reunion will have reached everyone in the monastery by evening.

Attention settles on Forrest. Every ounce of anger thrown Leo's way is rightly deserved; the boy fairly trembles with emotion. He appears unharmed physically, and in that Leo takes a modicum of comfort.

A phantom ache burns a line across his throat.

How can he explain the circumstances here? That magic beyond anything ever experienced before tangles time the way a child does a piece of string? That Leo died, twice, in efforts to make Pasithee's last wish come true, only to ultimately fail?

Leo was never deserving of being called Father. They'd tried repairing what had long been broken, like the Hoshidans filling the cracks in their pottery with gold. He thinks of the letters sitting in his desk drawer. For a man who loved words, his responses were slow in coming, sitting half-finished in an ever growing pile.

"Forrest," he begins, hating the anguish on his son's features. "Please, forgive me. I did not intend to ignore you or anyone else. There were...circumstances, that prevented me from writing. Even I was not aware how much time had passed."

Comfort does not come easy to him; still, he reaches out, clasping a hand on Forrest's elegantly clad shoulder. "I will happily discuss things with you in a more private location. And on the way there, will you tell me about your latest designs?"

"Auntie Elise!!!" It is his father's little sister that Forrest throws himself at with the most force, sweeping the princess into as tight of a hug as he can manage. (It is not truly very tight, but it's the thought that counts.)

"Now that I am here, there are so many things that we simply must do! So many shopping trips that we have missed out on! Don't worry, I shall make up for it in tenfold! Shall we start with tea first? You have to tell me what you've been up to. You're my favourite aunt after all!"

Dramatic gasps and joyful squealing is the only thing she can manage for the first few moments as she returns the hug with equal (if not greater) enthusiasm. 

She doesn’t let go of his arms even after she pulls back, looking over her nephew with a pout on her face that falters under the force of her own smile even as she tries to look disapproving. “Who do you think you are, not telling me you’re coming?! You gotta give me time to prepare for these things! I mean, look at me! I’m giftless here! What kinda aunt doesn’t have a gift for her nephew at the ready?! Jeez.”

She tries to hold her glare for a few more seconds, but the act quickly shatters. She hurts into giggles as she pulls him back into a hug. She’s never been good at the ‘strict’ thing. “I’m just kidding, ya meanie! I can’t stay mad at you. Now, about that shopping… I hope you’re free for the next few hours, ‘cause I saw just THE BEST place last week! Super sparkly. You’re gonna love it!”

"Well, then we both have an opportunity to explore!" Clair says cheerily. "It always feels so dreadfully awkward to shop for clothes and shoes by one's lonesome, after all - I can't do it without a good second opinion."

Forrest smiles. "Well, if I may give a second opinion on your current attire, your shoes are positively inspiring, and I love how well they complement your dress."

"Says you!" Clair scoffs. "Your dress is stunning - you say you made it yourself?"

"Absolutely." He puts his hands on his hips and does a proud half-twirl, which goes somewhat sideways when his boot snags on a gap in the cobblestones and he stumbles to the ground with an inelegant crunch.

Clair grabs his hand instinctively. "Forrest! Oh gosh, are you okay?"

"M'fine," he grunts, his cheeks blazing as he tries and fails to properly stand. "Just - oh, of course. My heel."

He kneels down again, plucking the thin, broken-off heel of his boot from its resting place between the cobbles.

"Well," he sighs, "I guess I have an excuse to start working with shoes."

Clair chuckles. "Every cloud, I suppose."

"Oh I understand completely! I had to have multiple trunks of my clothes shipped out from my homeland. And even then I was unable to bring everything I wanted to." He had brought enough to satisfy a million different urges, styles, and trends, and yet he still felt like that wasn't near enough. Of course, it wasn't all his clothes, he had brought a few pieces as gifts for family members - mostly his poor fashion bereft father and his horrendous proclivity towards inside out collars, but ah, c'est la vie.

Oh! He can already think of so many things that he could have brought that he woefully left behind!

(Hm, he had never made shoes before, but upon seeing this girl's, he's almost tempted to be inspired to. Leather, of course, would be a necessity. He will have to look into it at a later date.)

"I'm fairly new here myself. And I do certainly have a passion for style! Though..." He plays gently with the hem of his skirt, gloved fingers toying gently with the bits of carefully embroidered lace, "I can't say I know much about the shops in town, especially if they are not fabric shops. I make most of my own clothes, and while I do love a good browse here and there, I have not found time to do so as of yet."

Much has been talked about the “portrayal” of Sabitha Vypren Frey (and rightfully so, what the show did to her was horrible) but I’m also extremely miffed about the portrayal of Sabitha’s husband, Forrest Frey. In Fire and Blood, Forrest is meant to be a subversion of the Freys that we see in the main series, and he is meant to represent everything Walder and his descendants are not: young, handsome, gallant, loyal, chivalrous (drank that respect woman juice) vs treacherous, ugly, old, a fair-weather friend. Yet here in hotd, they decided to make the Freys scheming, demanding Harrenhal (despite it being on the other side of the riverlands from the twins) just so that show locals will froth at the mouth when they see a Frey being unpleasant.

But I really shouldn’t be surprised. The reason that all of Rhaenyra’s allies are being drastically changed is a result of the show completely dropping the ball when it came to Rhaenyra’s search for suitors back in season 1. In the show, Rhaenyra was rude and dismissive towards her suitors (even choosing to encourage bullying behavior and incite a fight between the Blackwoods and Brackens for shits and giggles, probably the most insulting scene to me personally), and didn’t try to build alliances and friendships with the lords that where courting her, and didn’t even visit them in their castles like in the book. There’s a reason why in the book, most of the realm sided with Rhaenyra without any ulterior motives or without demanding anything in return… because she was the realm’s delight. Now because the show kInD oF fOrGoT to give reasons why anybody would want to support her, they decided to make stuff up and so we get shit like the Freys demanding Harrenhal, the allowance of Blackwood war crimes, Starks always honor an oath (show locals: omg guyz that’s just like the Starks in the other show!) and not any other, more important reasons, the Arryns only agreeing because of dragons (and not any other, more important reasons) and others. It can’t just be because Rhaenyra made a good impression on the Freys, and that her cause was filled with people who were noble and cool and charismatic, because the show failed to give reasons why anyone cool would support her.

I talk abt the marriage tour HERE, where I say that it wasn't really the sort of marriage tour that you see in the show where the men line up to present their suits of marriage so directly...rather it was a silent hope underneath the purpose of Rhaenyra being more acquainted with some subjects for support similar to how Aegon I, Aenys I, Rhaena & Aegon (his kids), and Jaehaerys I/Alysanne all made progresses to make themselves "available".

In their minds, I think that they are creating obstacles & fallbacks she will eventually go over so she doesn't present as having things go too easy for her and risk people lose interest and or even accuse her of being some sort of Mary Sue, even as some also say she is terribly incompetent. That's what I'm getting, that this female protagonist must have more stacks against her for the payoff that will later swing again back away from her.

RHAENYRA + PROGRESS IN 112.

one of the most interesting and important aspects of fire and blood to me is the fact that when daemon takes harrenhal, the smallfolk are the ones who rise up first. the ‘ knights and men at arms and humble peasants who yet remembered the realm’s delight ‘ hundreds and then thousands headed to harrenhal before their great lords declared. who then also threw in their lots with rhaenyra. this also implies some pretty interesting things about the context of her tour in 112, beyond the men that paid court to her during. that she had at least some level of contact with the smallfolk of the riverlands, enough that she developed a positive enough report with them that they were willing to fight and die for her 17 years later from the impression that she made during. in the book there is no official reason for hers in particular ( in the show it is directly to find a suitor ) for my portrayal in particular i do take it as viserys sending rhaenyra to help her be more visible to the smallfolk and his leal lords on a larger scale and something of which of the royal family she was in fact the only representative – it was also a deescalation of the tension post the tourney of 111AC inside the walls of the red keep, and a way for her to gain more ??? experience outside the walls of the red keep. a way for great lords and landed knights to question her on the fallout of it in person and the subsequent formations of the greens and the blacks, and actually actively see the king’s chosen heir.

she also is ? of the same belief as aegon the conqueror that the best way to stomp out rebellion and discord is for the people to be able to speak to their king / queen, and bring their issues to them in person. she is also ? wholly cognizant of who’s crown she is in fact inheriting and the nuances of that decision and the potential ramifications and questions that will no doubt come with that. she’s aware she’s inheriting the crown of the conciliator, the man who ‘ made the seven kingdoms one ‘ who knew when to be lenient and pardon dissenters and when to stand firm but she’s also inheriting the crown of her father who only got that crown in the first place because rhaenys was passed over for it due to her sex. her want for peace is multifaceted - she’s trying to calm things down and level the waters so her potential ascension isn’t as big of a thing as it is and as big of a fright for the men around her and there isn’t a sense of their own power being at risk, for the transition of power to be as seamless as it would be if she were a man. and during the tour in 112AC, i think she definitely did a lot of work with the great lords and all the houses she visited, to alleviate that fear of change coming that had in fact begun to build upon the official formation of the political factions in the red keep.

during this tour, many sons of those same lords paid court to her. this wasn’t the worst thing—and for the most part it was ? it was easy, it was an easy social exchange and she had always adored the notion of courtly love and that sort of gallant chivalry and for the romantic in her, it was enjoyable at times. and the implication whenever viserys told her of her betrothal to laenor is during this time she also met at least one match that she was serious about marrying which led to their argument shortly thereafter ( more then likely harwin strong, given he either returned to court after he was said to have paid ? court to her or traveled to do so ) of them, the only ones that were really off putting for her as being potential matches were the lannister twins - purely because of the fact they were blood to each other. and both were in fact competing for her attentions and she didn’t ? want to cause discord in their family as well, DIDNT want to have a hand in throwing a wrench in their familial unit by choosing either of them - in causing strife due to their ambitions to be her king consort.

there were feasts, balls and tourneys thrown in her honor, and she was gone for the better part of that year between late January of 112 to mid December. she traveled with her retinue of ladies, retainers and knights, and her septa, lynesse. formerly of house hightower. a daughter of a distant relative of queen alicent. appointed to the position the year prior post the onset of the rumors about her purity being compromised. as well as ser criston cole and ser steffon darklyn. her duties consisted of practicing the art of diplomacy and progress reports among the great houses and gathering them up and taking them back to KL and she ? ventured outward into the more populated areas and villages to hold sort of an impromptu court of which she was at its head - wholly separate from the court paid to her by the nobility which was held within the visiting halls of the castles she stayed in while she traveled. she would spend a good fraction of her time everywhere she went doing so, because she wanted to get a sense of the state of the realm overall and what it was that she was coming into upon her ascension and where she would need to direct her efforts towards first and what she might place before the king. she was a visible presence in their lives, at that time. as she was at court, which led her to gaining a support system in the first place—she smiled and charmed them and won their support at 15 well enough that it lasted 17 years, and I can’t ? honestly imagine that was merely from one instance of seeing her and speaking to her.

it was very enjoyable and very ? insightful for her for a lot of reasons but mostly it allowed her to stretch her political legs in the sense of being able to be seen and to engage with her people without the greens looming over her, and actually being able to be judged fairly for her actions and demeanor without feelings like she was up against such an unyielding force of opposition. it was also very eye opening in the sense that it showed her that outside of the walls of the red keep, things aren’t so hopeless for her and her position. people want her to be queen regardless of what they may or may not have heard come from court. and for a girl who was so isolated for the majority of her adolescence and coming into her adulthood it was the push, the encouragement that she needed to remind herself she was on a path that could be achieved and was supported by people who’s ascent on the matter mattered, and who would not gain any advancement by doing so. the opposition she was facing back at court became less of an impassible road block, an impossible mountain to climb and more of an extraordinarily difficult one. which she was willing to do.

Any headcanons for Forrest relationship with Uncle Xander and Laslow? I like to think Xander is quietly supportive of Forrest, but it is such a shame Forrest doesn’t get to support with his Uncle.

hehe i think they'd love him! i mean of course, they're his uncles, but still. xander'd come across (as he does, as he is) as a pretty stern uncle--but forrest is good at not defining people based on their appearance, so i can imagine him being the type to be like "my uncle is actually VERY kind and thoughtful and sweet and--" *proceeds to stretch the truth* gusjfjsfb but i think part of this comes from that xander really does dote on forrest, similarly to how he treats elise.

laslow i think, at first, would be just really excited there's another baby around hahaha i think he'd love to visit tiny forrest! but as he gets older, well--forrest looks a lot like maribelle! i don't think this would go unnoticed by laslow, though i think he'd find that really charming, too. laslow knows a lot of precious and darling little tea shops around that i think he'd have fun visiting with forrest ("how do you know all these places?" "ah, well--"), and tbh. i think they'd lightly tease leo together LOL not to his face, just kind of gossiping quietly about him (with love ofc)

Try as he might, Leo will never fully understand his son. Hobbies aside, Forrest wears his heart upon his well-designed sleeve, every emotion felt to the fullest extent and on display for all to see.

There are some days where Leo wonders if Forrest inherited anything from his patrilineal blood, followed by the dismal thought that Forrest rejected such things in some form of rebellion. Leo only has himself to blame if that's the case.

He removes his hand, letting it fall at his side. "I made a promise to be a better father, and I intend to keep it. No one expected this little journey to yield such confusing results." Blond head inclines away from the greenhouse, towards the stone building of the Academy proper. "I'll answer your questions in my office. We can stop for tea, first, if you'd like."

Older prince begins walking, heading for the small flight of stairs. "Well, fashion is something you hold dear, is it not? I will not lie and say I understand it all, but I cannot learn if I refuse to listen. Where do you get your inspirations for new designs?"

Leo pauses on the first step and glances over his shoulder. The boy is owed his full attention, at bare minimum.

Forrest stares quietly after Hoshido's youngest princess, clutching tightly at his staff. Was she alone here? Did she miss her brothers?

"Princess Sakura," He greets politely after a moment, with a bow of his head, "are you doing well?"

At the sight of a familiar blondish mane - all attentively ad charmingly collected in two long golden curls -, Sakura couldn't help but burst into a delicate giggle, quickly followed by a genuine smile and a very polite bow in return of his well manners and impeccable education.

"Sir Forrest!" she chirped, clasping her hands together as she lifted her head after the bow, "I'm so grateful to have you here!" she truly was happy of his presence, knowing that despite their different origins, her connection with him was quite unique and delicate, especially since he perfectly reminded her of Leo.

"I'm still a bit lonely here, but seeing so many familiar faces from Nohr always makes me feel a little better" she sketched a smile, a sad smile though, since she was a bit resigned at the idea of not seeing any member of her family at the monastery.

Yarne shook his head, standing up with a small smile - the young… well, part of him was still unsure on how to refer to them - they threw signs one way or another, and Yarne didn’t have enough exposure to know which ones were false signs.

“Although… I’m not that tall, am I?”

Yarne followed after the blonde-haired… person? Yarne’s just going to call them a person mentally so he doesn’t get tripped up even more about their gender - he was already stumped enough. The heels made them come up to about his neck, and the hat made it a little closer yet - they were clearly dressed to impress, which did impress Yarne - he thought the uniform was more non-negotiable.

honestly i dont like the fates parent/child supports that much, with a few exceptions. mostly the conversations the mothers have with their kids (except corrin and azura) because theyre all the same. it bothers me so much. i was reading peri's supports with forrest and she doesnt sound like herself at all.
