What pro-Renly fans seem to overlook is that even with the law on his side, Stannis is fighting tooth and nail for the throne. All Renly has is connections, which can turn on him the second his campaign begins to falter. In the long run, his authority would never have lasted.
I don't think his authority would have faded because he relied extensively on his Tyrell patrons, I think there's a far more systematic issue with Renly's idea of succession. To rehash an old post of mine:
However, such blatant usurpation without the barest thread of legitimacy threatens the very fabric of the social order. Without clear succession in place, every secondborn and supernumerary son can simply wage a war to conquer their elder brother’s lordly seat, because that’s what Renly did. If someone didn’t like Renly himself, they could wage a war to depose him because that’s what Renly did. If Renly’s secondborn son is more popular than Renly’s firstborn, then he can wage a war to grab the Iron Throne because that’s what Renly did! Renly all-but guarantees endless war because he seeks to wage war and install whichever fiction makes sense afterward, which means Renly opens the door for this to open across the whole of his kingdom.
Thanks for the contribution, Anon.

My experience with my kintype.
So… I’ve known I’m otherkin for many years now, but I’ve struggled to pinpoint my kintype… and although I’m still not sure, I’d like to share my experiences and my memories anyways.
Most of my memories came to me in the form of dreams, so I’ll start there.  Buckle in, because this is going to take a while to explain.
Tumblr media
I had the first dream when I was 7.  My cat, Callie, had passed away that day…  That same night, when I went to sleep in the hotel room my family was staying at, I had the dream.  I was an angel.  I had white wings, and I can’t remember whether or not I had a halo.  But I was at my grandma’s house (my grandma’s part of the family is very religious) and God was up in the sky, looking down on me.  I think he was asking me to do something for him?  There was a contract in front of me, and the world around me started to fade to black… until it was just me, God, and this small pillar with a contract laying upon it.  I can’t remember if I did or didn’t sign it.  Suddenly, I began falling.  I fell into this black void, and was falling further and further away from God.  That was the moment I woke up.  Later that day, as my family was getting ready to leave the hotel… I was outside, looking at the clouds.  I was thinking about Heaven, and it felt so familiar to me.  It felt like a concrete fact that Heaven was real, and I found comfort in the thought of it.  I asked my mom, “Did Callie go to Heaven?” and my mom said, “Yes.”.  That’s where this story ends.
In between the times I was 7 and 10, I would pretend to fly, and I would use one of my parents’ blankets as my wings.  I did this a lot, and it felt very comforting to me.
Fast forward to when I was 10.  I hadn’t had any other noteworthy dreams since the last one, at least not that I can remember… and I hadn’t recognized the most crucial part of my true form yet, up until this point.  I was in the car, and I fell asleep.  I had my second dream there.  In this one, I was a regular human, going to school… or so I thought.  Even though I felt human, I had this tremendous pressure in my back.  After thinking about it for a second, I remembered, “Those are my wings.  They’re a bit cramped since I have to hide them inside my shirt.  My friends can never know I have wings.” being surrounded by my friends in the dream.  Eventually, my friends and I left the school and went on a walk, until we reached an empty parking lot.  In this parking lot, my friends began picking on me…  They kept saying bad things about me, and it got more and more aggressive.  It got to a point where I wanted to run away, but they had formed a circle around me and were surrounding me.  Finally, in my frustration and desperation to get away, my wings ripped through the back of my shirt, spread out, and I flew upwards into the sky.  That was the first time I finally got to see my own true wings.  Feathered, black, and very big.  Each wing stretched out completely is nearly the same length as my body.  That was where my second dream ended.
I finally got a glimpse of my true form.  After that dream, my supernumerary phantom limbs appeared.  I could feel my wings, and the feeling never left after that.  I don’t feel my wings all the time, but I do feel them rather consistently.  Here is a list of the feelings I experience with my wings.
Tumblr media
The most common/obvious feeling is that I feel a pressure in my back, right around my shoulder blades.  Sometimes it hurts a little, and sometimes it simply feels “weighted”.  Let me be very clear, not HEAVY, but weighted.  I don’t find them difficult to carry on my back, I just feel them there as my back feels slightly more weighted than usual.
Second, I feel the breeze against them.  Whether that be from a fan, the wind, or simply the soft breeze from when I’m moving forward, I feel a cool air lightly brush against them.
Third and last, is I get uncomfortable when my back is pressed against a seat of any kind.  It happens the most in the car, but also when I get lazy and lounge on the couch, ugh.
On another related note, I feel like I can reach behind me and grab my wings at any given time, but of course, there’s not actually anything there… so nothing would really happen.
Tumblr media
So from this, I assume everyone would say, I’m obviously angelkin, fallenangelkin, or demonkin… right?  Well, I’m not entirely sure.  I think I definitely am partially an angel, but I feel like a piece of me is still missing.  Let me explain.
I’ve always felt half angel, and half… something else.  Even though I do feel like an angel, I don’t feel exactly like the others up in Heaven.  I feel conflicted inside.  Plus, my wings are black… and aren’t angel wings typically white?
Recently, I discovered elven souls, and I relate to everything regarding them.  Right now, I’m wondering if my kintype is half angel and half elf?  I’m not sure, and to be honest, I don’t know if I’ll ever be sure.  I’ve been trying to pinpoint my kintype for almost 5 years now, and I still haven’t fully figured myself out.  Luckily, I’m still learning new things, even after all this time… so that gives me some hope!  :’)
Tumblr media
So… I think that’s about it.  That mostly sums up my experience with being otherkin.  I hope you learned something from my experience, and if you relate to me, feel free to get in touch with me.  I’d love to make new otherkin friends!

If Renly hadn’t have been born would Robert have given Stannis storm’s end and dragonstone?
I think he would have granted Stannis Storm's End and saved Dragonstone for either his heir or as a secondary seat for a supernumerary son. He may have appointed Stannis the castellan of Dragonstone in the immediate aftermath to help quell any anti-Baratheon sentiment, but I think if Stannis is his only brother, he'd give him Storm's End instead of Dragonstone.
Thanks for the question, Speedy.

Lost to Boston: Nova Scotia-trained doctor says residency red tape forced her to leave
In a province where shortcomings in health care make headlines any given day, a Dalhousie-trained physician says she was forced to take a position in the United States, though she would have preferred to stay in Nova Scotia.
Born in India, Dr. Taha Khan finished her medical training at Dal in 2019.
Enrolled as part of an ongoing partnership between Dal and a university in Malaysia, she fell in love with the region and was anxious to stay when her studies finished. But a roadblock appeared when she realized there was no residency waiting for her.
"During my time at Dal, it sounds like there was a change in policy, perhaps. It's unclear exactly what happened," said Khan from her office in the Boston Medical Center.
"[It] essentially meant that visa-requiring medical graduates could no longer match to residencies in Canada, at any residency program at any university across Canada. It basically meant that we needed either permanent residency status or citizenship in order to match. Now that made it tricky because in order to get permanent resident status, you need to have a job offer, which, in our case is residency."
"So, it was sort of a catch-22," said Khan, adding Boston, Mass., is a great city, and hospital staff have been very welcoming.
In a late-day email from Nova Scotia's Office of Healthcare Professionals Recruitment, officials said:
"The province is working to improve health care for Nova Scotians and that means recruiting, retaining and training more people who can provide that care. We have many initiatives underway and are open to all ideas that could help us move this priority forward.
"Currently, the federal government requires international students training to become a doctor to have their permanent resident status to be matched with a residency opportunity in Nova Scotia. We know there is high demand for residency opportunities in this province, including Nova Scotian students studying at Dalhousie University.
"The Province is reaching out to find out more about this situation."
Opposition parties say the province shouldn't be losing doctors on technicalities.
"These kinds of things we hear that just need to be addressed immediately," said Susan Leblanc, the NDP health and wellness spokesperson.
"There is no good reason why people who are being trained in Nova Scotia are then being asked to leave."
Liberal Leader Zach Churchill, a former health minister, says red tape has to be eliminated.
"We've got to be working to ensure that medical professionals, doctors, nurses -- anybody else we need that are practicing or training here -- can stay and work," said Churchill.
Founded in 1868, Dalhousie Medical School has churned-out generations of some of the best doctors anywhere. But the school says it's partnership with International Medical University in Malaysia is now winding down.
"Since 1996, Dalhousie University has partnered with the International Medical University (IMU) in Malaysia to train third and fourth-year medical students leading to a Canadian medical doctorate degree from Dalhousie University. We are proud of the exceptional IMU students who have graduated from Dalhousie University and what has been accomplished with our partnership with IMU," said Dr. Darrell White, senior associate dean for the Faculty of Medicine via email.
"When the IMU program was developed, the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CRMS), which is the national platform used for matching candidates to medical schools, had different residency/citizenship requirements than those that currently exist. While opportunities still exist for IMU students to remain in the region, their medical school seats are supernumerary positions that are funded by the students and do not have corresponding residency positions.
"Developing residency training positions is a collaborative effort each year between the Department of Health and Wellness, Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine, and Nova Scotia Health. There are several elements that factor into residency seats, such as funding level, projected need in the province and physician training capacity.
“Our formal agreement with IMU concluded with the 2022/2023 academic year, and we are welcoming our final cohort of three students next year for the Class of 2025. Dalhousie Medical School has undergone significant expansion over the past five years, and we are focused on providing undergraduate medical education opportunities that better reflect the current residency matching process," the email concluded.
Canada's Immigration Minister -- a Nova Scotian himself -- says, while health care is technically a provincial responsibility, his department is always ready to step up and smooth the way for more doctors.
"If provinces or institutions want to partner with the federal government to help piggyback on some of the measures we've already introduced to make it easier for health-care professionals to come to Canada, they're going to have a willing partner in our office," said Sean Fraser, MP for Central Nova.
Fraser says Ottawa has made some significant changes already.
"We recently waived the requirement that a person not be self-employed when to come through certain economic streams for physicians," Fraser said.
"We've changed the rules under our federal economic streams to make it easier for the federal government to actually select newcomers by the sector that they work in, and we intend to use that this year to recruit more health-care workers."
Fraser said Ottawa has also earmarked more than $90 million towards foreign credential recognition: "So when we do find a skilled newcomer who can come here and practice, they're not going to end up working in a position that they're over-qualified, or driving a taxi when they could be working as a surgeon or a family doctor."
Although she's settled into her life in Boston, Dr. Khan still misses Halifax.
She keeps up on the news and stays in touch with friends from medical school, but says not much has changed.
"As far as I know, a lot of them are either turning sights to the United States, the U.K. or going back to their own home countries. So, you have Canadian medical graduates who would prefer to stay there, but are unable to," she said.
"You have people who are familiar with the Canadian medical system who are there, who very much want to stay in Nova Scotia, and are willing to go to rural parts of the country and province that are under-served. So you have people who are ready and willing to do that and all they need is a visa status in order to do that so from my perspective, it's simple enough," she said.
A perspective from a medical professional who could technically work anywhere -- except the place she wants to.

After a two year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Delhi University will be returning to physical trials for admissions to its Sports and Extracurricular activities (ECA) seats this year. Could the king of the Seven Kingdoms create a new house for his children, with the house being in another region (besides the Crownlands)?
Say a Targaryen king has a couple of children and he decides to restore Summerhall, but instead of rebuilding it as a summer castle and royal residence, he has it rebuilt as a seat for one of his children. And that Harrenhal is vacant and a new house needs to be established there, so he decides to give it to one of his children. Thus the king would create House Targaryen of Summerhall and House Targaryen of Harrenhal.
Could the king do that on his own or would he need to smooth things over with lords Baratheon and Tully?
Also, how might the creation of those houses impact the politics in those regions? I mean, there are now royal princes in those regions, ruling a castle and lands. Might some lords try to bypass their lord paramount and go with their issues directly to the newly created Targaryen house, in an effort/belief that that would ensure that their issues gets to the king quickly?
Easy question out of the way first. Yes, the Seven Kingdoms could establish a branch dynasty in another component kingdom. However, that would negatively impact relationships with the vassals.
Summerhall isn't so bad - Summerhall is already a royal fief and so establishing a branch family there, as opposed to it being a palace for a supernumerary son, isn't so bad. The Baratheons might worry, especially if said branch family starts making moves in the southern Stormlands, but it's not a big deal because it's House Targaryen land anyway.
Harrenhal, though, that would be considered cause for alarm for every vassal, not just House Tully. That would be House Targaryen taking a fief that they have oversight over and removing them from the feudal hierarchy. Removing Harrenhal means House Tully doesn't collect any taxes from the fief, cannot call their levies for personal conflicts, cannot use Harrenhal as a means to help cow recalcitrant vassals such as if House Bracken or Blackwood gets uppity or restarts their private feud. House Tully would suspect that this is the first step in a plan to reduce them from their Lord Paramount status. Other vassals would worry that branch families or other trusted agents would likewise be planted in their kingdoms. So I'd expect a lot of hemming and hawing about "traditional rights as vassals," and minor acts of rebellion, which could culminate in a full-on aristocratic revolt.
You can guarantee that this branch family would bypass the Lord Paramount at every opportunity.
Thanks for the question, Dark.
