The dog at the top reminded me of Scooter, so I shared this with the mom of the family who has Skipper and Scooter and she laughed and agreed with me 100% that she had this happen but exactly flipped. Each of her cats were planned out way, way in advance, and then the dogs very much just showed up and said “my people now thanks”.

Please Tell Us About Scooter (not forced)

Oh I will absolutely do that. Scooter is the amazing, amazing pitbull mix owned by our closest family friend. He lives with Skipper, a basically everything mix (aka a supermutt), and the two love each other very much. The thing about them is: this family was always cat people. They had three cats, that slowly dwindled to one and then, shortly before they got Skipper, zero cats. To contextualize Scooter, I need to explain how they got Skipper. This is going to be a really, really long one.

So, the Manwells (the family friends) go on a family trip to a lake. And while at the cabin they’re renting, this black and white supermutt keeps following them. He’s male, unfixed, massively higher than waist level, short-furred, lanky, and has a distinctive Dalmatian pattern despite not having the right features otherwise. And they’re getting really, really concerned. So after their week has ended, and that dog is still following them everywhere, they wrangle this giant thing into their car and they’re like “hi, nearest shelter, can you check this giant dog that keeps following us with no collar for a microchip please?” And as it turns out, his name is Skipper and his family is… unreachable. And they slowly realize as they cannot get that number to ring through that he was purposely dumped at that lake. And this supermutt, for reasons they still do not understand, is trying to bite literally every other human, but has glued himself to the sides of this family. And this family, half of whom are autistic with the mom having massive hyperempathy problems, is like “well shit we have a dog now, we can’t just leave him”.

So now they spend most of a year trying to learn how to take care of a ginormous, reactive, traumatized dog with massive separation anxiety, and then, bafflingly, they find another giant, unfixed, male, short furred black and white dog on the side of the road. He’s just kinda lying there, but he looks uninjured, and at this point they’re like “well this is what we do now I guess”. So they wrangle *him* into their car, and drag him to *this* nearest shelter. And they say his name is Huckleberry, and his family is… unreachable. Again. And then they realize. This is a pitbull. This poor guy was supposed to be a fighting dog. And yet for reasons they still do not understand, he was trying to lick and beg for attention from literally every human. And they’re like “well shit we have another dog now, we can’t just leave him”.

So Huckleberry comes home, and Skipper loves him, but he’s acting strange. And they slowly learn his triggers. He’s terrified of the kitchen, he’s terrified of certain stances, he’s terrified of certain household items. But unlike Skipper, he doesn’t bite. He cowers, ears back and belly to the floor. And they slowly piece together that he was clearly beaten in his old owner’s kitchen, and they find what he can’t cope with, and they get so, so attached. But everyone hates his name, and all that it signifies his old owner. So they rename him. And now Scooter, the rescue pitbull, is the friendliest dog any of us have ever met, wanting to lick you everywhere and get all the scritches, learning to expose his tummy for rubbing if someone petting him proves that they’ll follow his lead, and he’s slowly training Skipper that not all humans are evil.

At this point, Skipper still can’t be trusted around anyone who doesn’t automatically back off when he sets boundaries, while Scooter lacks the concept that humans have boundaries and wants to cuddle in everyone’s lap always. But Skipper has improved massively due to his brother, such that one day recently I was playing with Scooter until he was so tired he just flopped on the floor, and Skipper walked up to me, bumped my knee with his nose, sniffed my hand, and then made purposeful eye contact for a few seconds before walking away. An acknowledgement, a short greeting, and then a warning not to push my luck. From Skipper, that’s a huge sign of trust, and his family was amazed that he was willing to do it. And it’s all from watching his utter cuddlebug of a brother be treated right by the humans that come over, and seeing that Scooter is happy and safe with them. Scooter was so happy, and also smelled like me, and so I seemed safe to acknowledge, though he did want to make clear eye contact to clarify that I needed to accept that as all I was getting. He may not trust most of us yet, but he’s getting there.

Now, the odd part is, Scooter looks like a pitbull. He is such an obvious pitbull. Meaning small children run and hide from him. On the other hand, small children run straight at Skipper, and have to be blocked from him because he will bite them if they try and pet him after sprinting at him. These two dogs, with weirdly similar coat patterns and weirdly similar backstories, are so wildly different from their expected reactions by breed, and Scooter is how I learned to absolutely adore pitbulls. He’s the sweetest dog anyone has ever met, he’s unreasonably smart, he forced them to buy new handles for their cabinets because he learned how to open the original ones with only his teeth, he wants to be as close to people as possible, and he’s also done such a good job as Skipper’s therapy brother. Skipper was taught to fight and is learning how to not, while Scooter was supposed to fight but was too friendly and loving to do it. They both came from such terrible backgrounds, but they’re so amazingly happy now, and I’m so, so tremendously proud of them both.

Disclaimer: dogfighting is very illegal in maryland. That does not mean people do not try. Sadly because neither owner could be contacted, it can’t properly be proven that they were the ones abusing Skipper and Scooter, so they sadly can’t report it and have anything happen. At least our boys are safe now, at a big house with a loving family and a huge yard to chase each other in circles for hours, and they’re both accepting that at their own paces.
