Tumblr media
Super Street Fighter II Turbo introduces faster gameplay, new special moves, and the debut of Akuma, a secret boss character. The game refines the Street Fighter II formula with a "Super Combo" system, allowing players to unleash powerful finishing moves, which became a staple in later fighting games. This version is known for its high level of difficulty and is praised for its deep mechanics, making it a beloved classic in competitive fighting game communities.

Guile's Theme:
You do not know the LENGTHS I went to verify which version of Guile's Theme this is. I literally thought this was some midi cover made by some dude but then I saw this was actually the snes version. But I was like "hmmm the snes version sounds a bit different tho" then I realized that the different versions of street fighter II uses different sound fonts or instruments or whatever. You might be thinking "didnt we already establish that there are different versions of sf2?" ohohohoho I'm not talking about the different console versions no no. I'm talking about shit like super street fighter II turbo or street fight II champion addition, the different versions that were released on the same fucking systems. There are FOUR different versions of street fighter II just on the snes and the arcade version has six! Anyways this is the Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers on the snes released in Japan on June 25, 1994 version goddamnit. The shit I do just to fact check a song that's been meme'd to hell and back.

Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (MD Mini 2)
Tumblr media
I don't have any numbers to back this whatsoever, but I feel pretty confident that more people played Street Fighter II on a 16-bit console than they did on an arcade cabinet. Sure, most of that was over on the Super NES and certainly not this particular iteration of Street Fighter II, but nevertheless, console Street Fighter II was Street Fighter II for a whole lot of people. Despite that, we only ever really see these versions resurface for things like mini-consoles and the now-abandoned Virtual Console service from Nintendo. Capcom doesn't include them in their Street Fighter collections, to be sure.
But maybe that makes sense. Who would want a less accurate version of a game where the real thing is available, particularly a version that strove for fidelity and got very close but couldn't quite get there? Is there value in that? This writer is too clouded by nostalgia to honestly answer that question. I like playing the Super NES versions I had when I was younger, even with the arcade games as an option. And I rather like these SEGA 16-bit versions, too. A nice reminder of how much better a pad with six face buttons is for Street Fighter II, to say the least. Why did we stop having six face buttons, anyway?
Super Street Fighter II is where the basement fell out for 16-bit Street Fighter II. Capcom had gone back to the well one too many times, and Super Turbo was already out in arcades by the time these ports hit the home. Not many trusted that Capcom wasn't going to just turn around and release that game six months after these. That's not a reflection of the quality of the ports, here. I've had a lot of experience with both the Super NES and Genesis versions of Super Street Fighter II, having picked up both for an absurd discount a few months after their release. They're both great, and I think the Genesis version in particular is very impressive for the hardware. But people were getting tired of Street Fighter II. They had options. They wanted Street Fighter 3. So this game, like its Super NES counterpart, didn't really get a lot of love.
I like that it has been included in the Mega Drive Mini 2, if only because it put more eyes on it. Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers is one of the best fighters on the Mega Drive, and it almost never gets mentioned. Tons of modes, tons of fighters, and it looks, sounds, and plays great. Would I pick it over the arcade version? Maybe, sometimes. How about you?

Don't forget to follow me on Bluesky!
New arrivals.
Finally shipped my BBTS backlog.
Very excited for everything here, but the first thing I opened was that Ryu from Jada Toys - I've been eager to check this one out for a while.
And it's an absolutely stunning figure. I'm legitimately shocked at what they could pull off for the price of a Marvel Legends. Everything. The sculpt, paint, articulation and accessories. Totally a top recommendation.
