Annnnnnyway, y'all might remember the story I wrote back in dinosaur times about Zira's life growing up, "Fall to Hatred", where she grew up as a princess of the Pride Lands and was absolute best friends with Nala's mother Sarafina. I've majorly reworked my TLK headcanons and story since writing that, and while I don't have it in me to write a whole multi-chapter fanfic about it anymore, Zira and Sarafina's friendship, and Sarafina's personality and story, were definitely something I thought about a lot and I figured I could draw a few pieces about their lives and briefly explain the story for each one. So here we go!

First though, you might wanna read this piece about Zira's father, it'll explain a lot of the context.

Princess Ziara is the second born cub of the mutinous King Jadi, behind her older sister Princess Dunia. Sarafina is born and raised in King Jadi's pride alongside Zira and the two become inseparably close (yes they’re totally crushing hopelessly on each other.

Since Ziara is the second cub of the King, she becomes the leader of the Lion Guard (no magic roar in my headcanon, and the guard marks are brushed/stenciled on instead of magically appearing), with Sarafina as her Bravest. 'Fina is devoted to her best friend and will charge into any danger to protect her. She is a very stern, reserved, no-nonsense kind of lioness, hardened by the hardships of life in the Outlands (we'll get to that in a moment), determined to protect those she cares about.

When Sarafina and Ziara are young/middle teenagers, King Jadi dies in his attempt to take over the Pride Lands through tricking Taka, and King Ahadi finally takes full control of the Pride Lands and casts those still loyal to Jadi into the Outlands. Jadi’s furious widow, Queen Sharifu, vows revenge. She changes her name to Queen Shari (anger) to match the anger she feels in her heart and begins putting her pride through harsh training to become stronger to eventually take the Pridelands back.

Later on Shari arranges marriages among the young adult lions of the pride to create plenty of cubs to train to take over the Pridelands. Sarafina is betrothed to a fellow Guard member, a skinny but swift little male called Kimbia who serves as the Swiftest on Ziara's guard. They’re not in love, but they are friends, and neither blames the other for the less-than-ideal situation. Princess Dunia is also betrothed to one of the guard, the Keenest of Sight, a male called Tumbili, but she seems oddly reluctant to announce an engagement for Ziara.

Sarafina still loves her best friend, but over the years she becomes increasingly concerned about their queen’s violence and how Ziara seems to be swayed by her mother’s harsh training and desire for revenge. The scene in this drawing is one of probably many conversations they had with Sarafina trying to get her friend to see that her mother’s obsession with revenge and her harsh and often violent treatment of the pride was wrong, and a nervous Ziara who loves and respects her friend’s advice but won’t be convinced away from her mother’s teachings insisting that it’s fine ‘Fina, yeah mom can be harsh but she just wants everyone at their best, Ahadi and his heir have to be taken down, everything will be better when they get their home back. Sarafina, however, isn't fooled, and as time passes and more conversations like this happen and become more tense and fraught, her concern only grows...

So yeah, this time Zira leads her own Lion Guard of the Outlands, and Sarafina is her bravest!

I'm super super happy with how the drawing part of this turned out. Admittedly I did trace part of Sarafina's head from a screenshot of the movie to get it to look right. Oh well, I never trace, and it's from a movie not another independent artist, so... yeah. Sarafina's got a scar on the underside of her jaw (about the only place I could justify fitting one that wouldn't have been seen in the movie based on her angles we see her head at). She got it protecting Zira from something.

How did Sarafina end up in the Pridelands instead? How did Ziara end up becoming Zira? I'll get into all of that in the next drawing. ;)

Kiara Headcanon

This is a headcanon that I came up with a while ago and I know it sounds a bit far fetched but hear me out.

I think Kiara has some form of lung issue.

First off people both within the movie and in the fandom comment on how loud her breathing is. Also she gets out of breath quite easily when trying to hunt (before the fire). Actually, speaking of the fire, this is weird but Kiara is the only TLK character to ever faint as a result of a fire. No other character is ever affected by a fire for more than two seconds not even when Simba is fighting against Scar (and that fire went on for ages) so the fact that Kiara actually fainted as a result of the fire shows that there is clearly something wrong with her lungs to begin with.

So on with the headcanon!!!

So when Kiara was born, she was born with a lung issue that made it difficult for her to breathe. The symptoms of this condition are shortness of breath, difficulty breathing (Which is why she breaths quite heavily) and a tendency to pass out if she overexerts herself. As a result Simba became overprotective over her. Simba is super anxious about Kiara's condition and he often takes her to Rafiki for checkups even when she doesn't need it at the time (Like say they're just vibing in Pride Rock and Kiara just clears her throat or something). He sends Timon and Pumbaa after her to monitor her condition at all times when he can't do that himself. Kiara doesn't want to be pitied or seen as weak because of her illness so she tries to prove herself to her dad and show that she is just as capable as Kion (Simba isn't protective over Kion because he's perfectly healthy). The reason why the cub at the end of the first movie looks different to Kiara is because for a brief moment Simba was considering skipping over Kiara and making Kion the King instead as he was worried about her health. Nala, Sarabi, Sarafina and the rest of the pride disagreed with this decision which caused Simba to change his mind and Kiara had her presentation from the movie weeks later. Also her lion asthma (I ran out of words, okay) is also the reason why she's so bad at hunting. Her heavy breathing makes it difficult for her to be stealthy when tracking animals (Kovu even acknowledges this at one point). Due to the sheer amount of fires this poor girl has been in, Kiara's lung condition actually kind of worsens by the time her first hunt rolls around which is why she was better at hunting in TLG and not TLK2.

And that's the headcanon!

(So I was joking about that whole 'lion asthma' thing but I googled it and apparently there really is a feline asthma that exists, its super rare in lions and only three lions in the world have that condition, so uuuuhhh.... Poor Kiara).

Uru: Daughter of Mohatu, Queen of the Pridelands. She is very strict and has a bad temper. While she is smaller than other lioness, she is super buff and can handle a fight with a grown male lion. She loves her family unconditionally, but her early death causes a rift within her family, specially between her sons.

Ahadi: Prince Consort, mate of Uru. He comes to the Pridelands as a teenager with his mother, the latter being attacked by hyenas while defending her son, who has stolen food from the hyenas. He respects Mohatu and feels he is in eternal debt of him. He wants a simple life with his cubs and mate, so when he marries Uru he doesnt try to be "royal" and is more than happy to take care of his sons. But when Uru dies earlier than expected, he is left with a kigdom in his paws and a pair of teenagers that dont handle well the death of their mother.

Mheetu: Only son of Scar. He is planned to be conceived by the lionesses during Scar's reign, thinking that if Scar has a cub, father's instincs would kick on him and make him realise how much he is destroying the kingdom. Scar agrees to have an heir, and choses Sarafina as the mother of his son, in his attempt to make Sarabi jealous. When Mheetu is born, Scar is slapped by what he sees: a little cub with a red tuff. A little Mufasa. Enraged, he declares that Sarafina has cheated on him and doesnt recognize Mheetu as his son. The truth is, he realises that within his genes there are genes of Mufasa as well. Not wanting to endanger his kingdom by a clone of his brother he declares he will no longer trust any lioness and if he ever decides to have a heir he will select it from any born cub. Mheetu leaves the pride for a while when he becomes a teenager but returns later when Simba is king. He becomes the father of Zuri.

Kopa: Yes, he is canon in my universe. He is the firstborn of Simba and Nala. He is best friends with Afua and both cubs spend a lot of time together. He is a bit of a pushover and very shy, but has the bad habit of not holding his tongue and saying hurtful things. It's one of those times that he engages in an argument with Afua, argument that evolves into a physical fight and causes both cubs to roll towards an abysm. Sadly, Afua falls and dies while Kopa is rescued in time by his father, but his paws are covered on his own blood, from where Afua tried to grab himself from falling. The guilt, his broken heart and his injuries, causes him to die days later.

Afua: Twin brother of Kovu. Exactly as you heard. When Zira's sister gives birth to these two cubs a little after to arriving to the Pridelands during Scar's reign, Scar choses Kovu as his heir. Zira is delighted by the news, altho her sister isnt much. Sadly, the latter dies a little after Simba recovers the kingdom, which causes Zira to adopt the twins. Zira is dealing with her own grief over her sister's death and trying to fulfill Scar's desire and raise Kovu as the perfect heir. Hence Afua isnt as cared as much and he likes going around and play with Kopa, the prince. He even playfully says that since both have the same color of mane they are more brothers than he is with Kovu. Afua is very similar to his brother, liking to bluff about his abilities and being sometimes a little too rough while playing. His death is witnessed by Zira while she is looking for Kovu, and when she sees Simba only rescuing Kopa, she loses herself, attacks Simba and reveals that she knew more about Scar than she said, specially that he killed Mufasa and planned to kill Simba. The revelation caused her exhile, but she swears revenge, for her sister's son and blinded by rage, accepts fully that what Scar said about Mufasa and his son was right and she would do anything to recover the kingdom for him.

Moyo: Twin brother of Akili, as i said before, he is very serious and stoic. He loves his family, would give his life for his siblings and has a special connection to his grandfather Simba. Him looking too similar to Scar causes a lot of prejudice, but he usually brushes them off, his sister Akili is there to call out those who bother him after all. But the murmurs and talkings do hurt him, and while he doesnt show any, he is very resentful. He doesnt forget, and if he happens to see someone, specially a prey animal who misjudged him being attacked by hyenas or cheetahs, who is him to stop the Circle of Life and intervene?

Your art style is very nice, and I love the way you color memories/dreams in comparison to current events, as well as adding small splashes of color for emphasis and definition in certain scenes. So, keep up the good work, and I can't wait to see what happens to Sarafina and Sans!

TLK: Sakin Ref

For a while I've been meaning to make sense of Vitani's appearance and existence, so I made a father for her. Meet Sakin (I went with a Turkish name because not only did (I think?) barbary lions once range there, but to diversify the cultural names a little. If other animals on the way to the Tree of Life can have Hindi/Urdu/Chinese names then why not Turkish lol)

Sakin is a male barbary lion nomad who arrived to the Pridelands after hearing from animal-to-animal that the king and his son had died in a tragic stampede accident. To Sakin, this news meant that Pride Rock was up for grabs, and he hurried over to the territory. Little did he know, the late king had a brother, and a loyal army of hyenas packed in every corner of the land. Sakin contemplated turning back where he came, but he spotted a lone, troubled lioness that somehow managed to steal his heart. Being the master of flirting, he won the lioness over one night. The lioness, known as Zira, had realized that her developing love for Sakin meant that she was losing her loyalty to Scar. In a fit of panic, she scratched at the rogue lion and drove him out of the Pridelands. The night Zira had spent with Sakin resulted in an unplanned cub, who bore unusually fluffy hair and blue eyes. Sakin lives up to his name as he is a pacifist who does not fight for his kingdoms, he simply takes whatever he's certain is open to avoid conflict. He likes to go wherever the stars take him. He is technically an exact foil to my other OC Kitoto, Nala's father. Kitoto was too stubborn to settle down from his party animal self, and was very disloyal to Sarafina, dating new lionesses very frequently. Sakin, however, wouldn't have minded settling down and caring for his daughter, and is a very easygoing lion whose philosophy is to go with the flow. In Kitoto's case, he was the toxic parent and luckily wasn't the one to keep Nala. For Sakin's case, Vitani unfortunately ended up staying in the paws of the toxic parent, Zira. For Sakin's design, I basically took whatever features distinguished Vitani from Zira and exaggerated them: Vitani is paler than Zira, so I gave Sakin a pale pelt. Vitani has a more grayish underbelly than Zira, so Sakin's underbelly is super gray. Vitani's got thick, bushy eyebrows, Sakin's are THICC. Vitani's nose is a dark mauve, his nose is a lighter mauve. Vitani is super fluffy, I gave Sakin ALL the fluff. Vitani's got dark earrims, he has even darker ones. Lastly, Vitani's eyes are kind of an electric blue color, so Sakin has even bluer eyes than her I imagine him speaking in a low, raspy voice in order to parallel his daughter. His voice is very soothing, making for smooth flirting and peaceful philosophical talks with strangers. Talking with him would basically feel like if he shared a joint with you His physical appearance inspirations are Vitani, 80's metalheads (if Vitani can be goth then he can be metal lol), sheepdog characters (for example the eyebrow thing with his bangs are based on Max from The Little Mermaid), and real-life barbary lions (which are extinct in the wild, but are bred in captivity. They're very hairy lol). Voice-wise, he would sound something like Moto Moto from Madagascar or Trent Lane from Daria

MARQUIE!!! The most memorable scene for me is the one in Spinning Cherries where we get mesmerized by the corndogs 👀 I still really really love that fic & come back to it all the time, as someone who is a lil spacey (at all times really) but especially when i'm UnDeR ThE InFlUeNcE it's always super sweet & comforting to think that Katsuki would take care of me 🥺��

Yesenia is a really strict (and unknown age old) teacher but she tries her best to be nice! Workaholic tendencies and has high standards but it’s bc she ~believes in ppl~ lol

Oh yeah also doesn’t like Crowley and always exists in a state of ‘I’m about to kick his ass if he casually shoves his responsibilities onto others AGAIN’, pretty blunt and straightforward!

Valdis is definitely the strict one in the immortal duo. He does work a lot for only being a teacher's assistant (mainly cause Elysia is usually on the run/not in the classroom). But he does assist other professors to make sure they reach his standards. Cat and bird relationship with Crowley, he doesn't like him at all. While he finds Elysia's flippant behavior charming, he is only annoyed with crowley (reminds him too much of his previous master). Valdis would definitely be relieved to have someone who holds his standards.

Another strict professor would be Sarafina (Sara). Animal language professor who takes no bs (often is found with Leona over her shoulder to take him back to class). Instead of a wine aunt, she's a beer aunt. Semi permanent glare. Secretly, not so secretly plots Crowley's demise (jokingly). Super blunt, doesn't care much for others feelings (won't sugar coat at all). Sara would appreciate her bluntness, too many people used flowery language around her (because she's Leona's aunt so the ✨bloodline✨)

Wow both are just angry cats, huh?

On the opposite end, there's Rontia and Elysia. Neither women are very serious and strangely like Crowley. Rontia finds him entertaining and Elysia finds him "quirky"(reminds her of her old master). Would they test her patience? Probably, mainly Rontia.

Wow your stuff is amazing!!!!! Any tips for someone trying to get into felting?

Skills:

I suggest watching needle felting videos to help with technique! I learned from Sarafina's videos when I was starting out.

A lot of new felters leave their sculptures super squishy which is more likely to fall apart and tends to make it harder to get little details. Keep poking it! (But keep in mind, the level of squishiness definitely varies between artists. There is no one right squishiness)

Materials:

Wool batting is your best friend. It felts up a lot easier than wool roving. In the image I attached, batting is above the roving. As you can see the batting is already somewhat tangled up so part of your work is already done! This isn't to say that you can't work with roving. Most of my wool is roving because it's easier to find in lots of colors.

As far as needles go, gauge 36-38 will do the bulk of your work, but higher number gauges like 40 are awesome for details.

You'll need to get something to felt on. I heard that folded towels work if you don't mind getting wool on them. Foam mats are very popular but fall apart over time do to poking them with a needle. I want to get a brush-style felting surface, but haven't tried it yet.

Having a child with the mains

Asara- Calm father who protects his kid but lets them get away with alot when mom isnt around. (Child names: Sarafina or Ezra)

Julian- Super protective and spoils them rotten. Much like Asara he lets them get away with everything when mom isnt around. (Child names: Alistar or Estelle)

Muriel- Strick father whos super protective. Teaches the child to be a strong rule following person but still gives them alot of love, though it can be tough love. (Child names: Juniper or River)

Portia- Fun mom with rules that arnt always followed. Usually is the one causing trouble more than the kid. (Child names: Casey or Toby)

Nadia- Spoils them a little but teaches them to be responsible and respectful at an early age. Cuddly mom with lots of love. (Names: Aris or James)

Lucio- Spoils the kids to much and lets them get away with everything. Mom usually has to be the discipline authority. (Names: Cadence or Alexander)
