Fragile Snowman (Remastered)

Season 3 Featured on: Inspector Gunner 2 With Critic

Following up directly on yesterday's post, one of the most notable events that happened during Season 3, one that was covered with a lot of love by the SiIvaGunner team in MAGFest 2019: SiIvaGunner Presents - High Quality Ripping, was the Nostalgia Critic takeover. Somehow, despite running the blog for half a year's time at this point, I still haven't ever gotten to touch on this event, despite being one of the more fondly remembered parts of the Season. And, well, there IS kind of a reason for that?

See, what initially started as an event celebrating old YouTube reviewers in general (hence Inspector Gadget's presence during it and in the album), transitioned into a purely-Nostalgia Critic event - but rather than celebrating Doug Walker's legacy in particular, the takeover took a different approach. Playing on Walker's gimmick as a reviewer in particular, the event was focused specifically on being a "nostalgia"-event - in other words, aiming to specifically bring us in the audience back to the days of Season 1 through every rip uploaded. This theme wasn't quite as...immediately apparent as many other takeovers, be it with rips like Totally Shaaking Out Right Now in the Harlem Shakeover, or Fell From a High Place (Reprise) during the Minecraft music event. Because while those events pretty radically changed to a core theme, this nostalgia-themed event instead saw the channel return to a status quo it once had - reuploads of several prior-lost Season 1 rips, new rips that were intentionally simplistic and often off-key, and an overall focus on the kinds of jokes that were all the rage in Season 1.

It was a genuinely really fun time, yet it was simultaneously hard to think of a fitting rip to represent it all with - in my eyes, it's one of those events that only truly worked in the moment, surrounded by all these rips that formed a cohesive whole. But Fragile Snowman (Remastered) is as close as it gets, I think - a loving remake of a true classic of Season 1. I've talked before of just how much I love it when rips of all sorts get dug back up for another shot at live with Violet Snow Memories from earlier this year, and this event was really the first time that we ever got a concentrated dose of that feeling throughout an entire takeover - and despite the rip of today's post only being two years old at that point, the nostalgia for it had already set in for me.

As described by Chaze the Chat in the aforementioned MAGFest panel, a big part of the fun with Season 1 was its sense of...spontaneousness, that you never really knew what to expect due to there simply not being much of any expectations set up by prior channel history in the first place. And as a result, we got a lot of rips much like the original Fragile Snowman - a mashup between Snowman as featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Fragile by Tech N9ne. There's a lot of rips like this even today, mashing up more chill video game music with hip-hop music that doesn't necessarily have much memetic quality, and while a lot of them can slip through the cracks of the SiIvaGunner audience, Fragile Snowman really did stick - enough to warrant two remasters made of it, with Fragile Snowman (Remastered) being the final stop the rip's made thus far.

There's so many small things fixed and tweaked in this final remastered version, yet it still sounds exactly as you'd imagine a mashup between the two songs to sound - which is, really, the best tell for it being an excellent remaster. The Nostalgia Critic takeover, while less bombastic and loud than many other events, was one that most every SiIvaGunner fan loved specifically because it focused on something we were ALL fans of - SiIvaGunner itself - and reminded us of just how far we'd come in just two short years. All these years later, there was indeed another event somewhat similar to this Nostalgia Critic takeover that happened just recently in Season 7, but...that's a story for another time.

How did you get into Earthworm Jim in the first place?

Oh it is a long and bittersweet story.

Spring of 2019, I was in 6th grade. I was at my mom's house, this was back when my best friend Tom, was dating my mother (that's how we met and became friends), and was watching some sort of WatchMojo countdown on my TV in my room (I think it was for funniest game endings) and Earthworm Jim appeared on #2. It immediately caught my attention. Something in me immediately wanted to know more about it. So I went downstairs and asked Tom (he was a twitch streamer so I figured he knew the most about video games) "What's Earthworm Jim?"

Tom was so excited he jumped up and told me "I'll tell you in the morning!" And so the next morning, he set up his Xbox One and sat me down to play Jim HD. I fell in love with the game immediately, I've only ever really played this kind of game I only affiliated it with Mario and DuckTales (I was a Wii U baby) and it felt more like DuckTales with the 2D animation. It spoke out to be as being unique being weird being funny I could use a gun, I can use myself as a whip! And it was challenging the levels were memorable. When I struggled my way to the end for the first time, I was so mad because I found out that Tom set the difficulty to me to easy so I didn't get the ending, that by the time he got home he heard me cursing and yelling from outside "FUCK YOU, I'M BEATING IT ON ORIGINAL." I played the game all over again.

Then, Tom showed me the cartoon in the summer. I was already into stuff like the Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain because it was on Hulu, so the Earthworm Jim cartoon hooked me. Not only did I love something but I love something with a friend, this was me and Tom's show, whenever mom would be sleeping for work (night shift), the two of us would go out to Popeyes, pick up some chicken (she prefers KFC), some root beer, (there is a local brand that has the absolute best and it was made with honey) and then watch the show together all throughout the summer. I very frequently borrowed his DVD.

Then it became fall and I was a 7th grader. I had the worst English teacher I could have possibly had, she wanted everything on paper if you go over to her to get some revisions on a computer she would demand that you print it you print it and then she points out the revisions so you have to type it out again and then you have to print some more. she tried to force paper on everybody including the parents, it was a nightmare. So while she had an audiobook on I started to doodle. And what was on my ASD laced mind?

This. I wrote it down on tests and papers to let myself know that I was doing a good job. My doodles were not very good at first and I never really considered art because I just hated coloring originally. Then Christmas came, and I got given an Earthworm Jim lunch box, and it was my favorite Christmas present of that year. That Christmas was the last Christmas with Tom and my Mother...

And then came January of 2020. I went to Magfest on an invitation from Tom, I got to play the original version on a Super Nintendo and my mom was just laughing at me failing everything because even though I could beat the HD version easily I never touched the original. One night I accidentally left my journal at the dinner table and Tom found it, it was filled with Jim sketches. He immediately brought it to me and gave me constructive criticism and praise, I felt absolutely proud because I never really got complimented on that kind of thing before on something that wasn't math. One last grace before...

February of 2020. Tom and Mom broke up. Their relationship didn't work out for a number of reasons, and Tom had to leave to go somewhere to find a job. Before he left, he gave me his copy of the Earthworm Jim cartoon, installed Jim 3D on my mom's computer, and I gave him some traces I did of the Jim 3D bosses.

Then the pandemic happened right on my birthday, and right at the perfect age of turning 13, and having the ability to interact with the internet.

I'm sorry for the long ass story that's genuinely what happened.

Sorry I’ve been mostly gone for the last few months. 2020 particularly has been a wild year for me personally.

My story actually started back in September when I applied for the JET program for the 4th consecutive year, as that in itself took up a significant amount of my time and attention.

I got rejected once again.

About two weeks prior to the rejection, I applied for a new job in Washington state. I got a referral from a close friend of mine. Got accepted for that job in less than 24 hours, but I was still waiting for the JET interview results (and the timeframe between acceptance and the first day of work was undoable to me as a broke New Yorker going to MAGFest on a shoestring budget

I had to take some mad commissions for that. To this day, some of those commissions are incomplete still

Two weeks after my 4th JET program rejection and the wave of depression and anger that followed, I got another call from the Washington job asking to come in 7 weeks later.  I took the offer. Back at this time, people and governments were still slapfighting over whether to take a certain viral situation seriously or not.

Around the time I got that second call, I had a meltdown at work when the server died and more was expected of me handling it than I was able to do.

I had 7 weeks to find an apartment, downsize my belongings and find a way to get me, Kirby (my fish) and a tiny percentage of my belongings on a minimal budget.  In doing so, I had to reach out to friends in private to avoid my former employer snooping around my social media.

I send in my 2-weeks notice and while I’m thankful I wasn’t fired right there for doing that, extra demanding work tasks were piled on me while I was preparing the move. Like having to teach computer-unsavvy people how to do my job and writing instructions on how to do these things; 99.99999% computer-related. I used up my vacation days to take days when i felt another meltdown coming and my former employer used that against me when they wanted me to make business cards with photographs for all staff members- something that would take several weeks when I only had four days left at work.

On top of everything, I’ve gotten a cold four times between November 2019 and March 2020 because the apartment’s heater broke down, the landlord would just keep smacking it to make it work temporarily, and my room wasn’t properly insulated so I froze all winter like I was sleeping out in the street.

So when I finally made it to Washington, I was a mess. Nasty cold, weakness, fatigue, everytime I tried to sleep, I had vertigo.

And $2700 in credit card debt from the move. My plane ticket was $150, but my [oversize/overweight] baggage fees were $400, delivery of my books and artist alley materials was another $150, setting up a new fish tank from scratch was almost $300 (not including parts that my friend had gifted him), and then some.  I basically moved out here with my computers, 1/3rd of my video game collection (the rest were donated/sold), art supplies, Kirby, some rare/recent collecibles, and a week’s worth of clothing. Everything else had to be purchased after the move. Furniture, food, kitchenware, linens, etc. 

A lot of items were donated from friends. I am beyond thankful to them!

And yes, Kirby came with me on a plane. You had to see the eyes bulging out of every TSA officer that saw me yoink a bag of live fish out of my carry-on, but I had a printout from the TSA website that indeed said that live fish are allowed through security checkpoint as long as they are in a sealed container.

Kirby also got sick. He had anxiety from the move and the new tank settings. We got him a cave to hide him, but it had a really rough surface and he injured himself bumping into it a few times. Cave was since removed.

So then I started my new job a week later.  Four days into the new job, the office decided to close before corona could be a problem. I’ve been working from home ever since. The training was chill physical energy-wise, but very intense and full of information I had to retain. Also, this is my first customer service job, so I was super anxious the whole way. 2.5 months of training it was,

By the end of March, I had all the symptoms that Corona was known for. Nothing was severe, and I had no vehicle to go see a doctor (I made a dumb mistake and moved to a hilly suburb because the rent was cheap). It could have been corona, it could have been a venn diagram of my cold phasing out overlapping with anemia and anxiety, I guess we’ll never know. I found ways to get by while still working from home.

Kirby was also choking on his own air bubbles for March and April. I wasn’t able to get any info on why that would be. He is doing fine now.

Training is over now. I finally started seeking medical help last week because I’m still dealing with chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath which I was told could be anemia (worse than I’ve ever had it before).  I’m still anxious because I’m on customer phone service full time now, but while it has a lot of challenges and I do get tired in the end (which could be anemic fatigue still), I’m a LOT less stressed out than I was at my old job.  The pay isn’t much higher, but I’ve been able to live a much better life here. Got usable health benefits now and while the food is more expensive out here, you get a LOT more food for all those dollars spent. Also, since I’ve been too fatigued to cook much of the time (and I have a shitty electric stove that takes 45+ minutes to boil a pot of water), I can have healthy restaurant meals delivered via uber eats. Most of the restaurants in my service area serve REALLY TASTELESS FOOD, but some restaurants serve enough in one order to make for 2-3 meals.

but anyway. That’s what’s been going on now. Financial situation has improved greatly since I started getting paychecks out here. medical investigation is ongoing. I just need my energy back to start making regular art content again.

I have played Animal Crossing since the game came out. I will share the artwork I’ve managed to do soon, including some plague knight and mona/animal crossing crossover stuff such as the pic you see above.

My Decade can oddly be summed up by my Tokusatsu viewing habits.

Prelude involving childhood: The year is anywhere between 2004 and 2006. During a stroll through Wikipedia I see the Power Rangers is based on a Japanese TV series called Super Sentai. I only click on the first few seasons and don’t recognize the suits because I’m 10-12 and haven’t tried clicking on the one called Zyuranger. I give it no further thought.

The year is 2008. I am 14. Kamen Rider Dragon Knight airs and I write it off as a Power Rangers rip-off. Evidently I don’t remember the Power Rangers episodes with Masked Rider.

The year is 2009. I finally see the words Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and realize the fool my younger self was. I find out that the white ranger came from the follow up to Zyuranger. I think it’s all pretty neat. I see old Kamen Riders from the Showa era and am confused but still don’t follow it up further.

The Decade begins: The year is 2010. I find out that the next Super Sentai in 2011 is Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. Everything about it sounds fun and I want to watch it, but it’s still a couple of months before it starts. I decide to watch Kamen Rider but don’t know where to start. OOO is currently airing. I watch Decade instead. To this day I haven’t finished OOO.

The year is 2011. I can’t wait for the next Gokaiger and Fourze. I start drawing Toku heroes on my school work.

The year is 2012. I can’t wait of the next Go-Busters and Fourze. Super Hero Taisen proves to be terrible. An assignment in one of my classes is to make a calendar. I use Heisei Kamen Riders. I’m feeling pretty good about things until college starts.

The year is 2013. I have a mental breakdown. I stop watching Kyoryuger after 2 episodes, and soon after stop watching Kamen Rider Wizard. I am falling in to a deep depression after starting medication for anxiety. I do not recognize that the meds are wrong for me for 2 years. I fail to watch Akibaranger Season 2 for these same reasons.

2014. ToQGer proves to be too weird for me and I already don’t like Gaim. I don’t even give Kamen Rider Taisen shot. I fail to watch any of Kamen Rider Drive

2015. I watch 1 episode of both Nininger and Ghost. I am still very depressed. I start to go off of my meds due to forgetfulness. Don’t follow my example. Don’t do it suddenly without aid of your therapist

2016. My uncle dies. I spend most of the year helping my grandmother out with things. I watch one episode of ex-aid. It proves to be too noisy for me at the time. I might as well not exists this entire year. I start removing Toku theme songs from my phone’s music library

2017. Friend pushes me to do things I already know I’ll enjoy but I make excuses not to do, mental health starts to improve. I take more steps to improve myself. I watch Kamen Rider Build on a consistent basis. I make an 8 hour drive to visit my mother for Christmas.

2018. The year ends up being very odd, but I come out of it better than I went in. I watch every episode of Lupinranger vs Patranger. I realize that it’s okay to do things by myself in public. I join a home D&D game and am having fun in groups of people. Zi-O starts and I love it, faults and all, just as I did with Wizard. I make arrangements to go to MAGfest in January.

2019. MAGfest goes mostly well. A good start to the year. I start to feel more pressure to get a job and start delivering for doordash. I hate it, but keep at it for most of the year until I can’t stand it anymore. Strongest Battle happens. It’s pretty cool. I start to feel the worst anxiety I have in a few years, but I manage through it. Ryusoulger starts. I stop watching after two episodes and start to fall behind on Zi-O. I notice a pattern and it scares me. I continue to work through anxiety but manage to catch up on Zi-O. Turns out I just don’t like Ryusoulger and I’m much better equipped mentally to deal with this than I was. I take up Cross-Z’s battle cry as a self affirmation, because I feel like I can’t lose. Zero-One starts and I get impatient to watch it every week. I still can’t find a job and I’m feeling discouraged, but I can’t lose. I still come out of the year better than I was.

2020 is going to be a good year because I refuse to let it not be, and I’ve got a feeling that I can’t lose.
