Packed back dinner from Feng Food (台湾味 “丰”) in Northpoint City. Yeah, the Guan Miao Mian with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (猪排关庙面) is for mum while I opted for the Sunrise Pork Chop Rice (日出猪排饭). Because of the orange egg yolk, they called this “Sunrise”. Added just a little of their super-hot chilli paste as it is really burning spicy.

🖌, 📺, and 🍂 for the ask game?
HELLO! Richard 🐔 welcome to the askbox thunderdome 🌩️⚡. Thank you for sending me this ask I have appreciated it greatly to be asked these emoji questions :~)
🖌 - Do you have/want any tattoos? Yes, I have two tattoos. One is of a wasp on my shoulder/back that I got when I was 17 (regret, mostly, want to get this covered up ASAP), and my other one is a Sunrise/Sunset over the ocean with a palm tree in the foreground that I got when I was 19, on my right bicep. I won't post a picture but here's a drawing of them. The wasp was because I wanted a tattoo so bad so bad so bad so my mom hooked me up with a tattooist who happened to live down the street from us... I don't like it because it's just, very small, on the large expanse of my back, right next to some cigarette burn scars??? it just feels. out of place... The sunset was because @parasitefun and I had made life plans to live together within like, two months of us talking, and the original plan was for Florida. Because we met thru the Hotline Miami fandom, and also there was this band I was obsessed with that originated in Tampa and this article I read about them made it seem so romantically warm and humid and hazy... gosh. So the same tattooist who did my wasp also did my sunrise. It's not nearly this vibrant IRL because she was doing my work directly on my skin, and at the time I was only working in watercolor?! so it actually looks faded as fuck 😭 but other than maybe touching it up, I want to retain the meaning and build around it. my favoritest part has to be the lines in between, they're really broken up like that so the skin shows through!!!
as for if I want any more tattoos, yes, of course I do! I want more tattoos every day, but I've gotten more picky in the past few years... I can't really decide on any one design, and Parasite has been the sole earner for our entire relationship >_< so there's not usually any fun money set aside for things like body mods, unfortunately. Here's a design I've wanted since 2016- it's the cover art for Oneohtrix Point Never's "Garden of Delete" which is one of the only things that saved me that year ;_;
This morning I read an article about how heatwaves affect Train Tracks, which for some reason I can't find the article now but I'll try to find it later, but anyways heat causes train tracks to "buckle" which is just ludicrous to me, I had no idea, very terrifying. Railways are beasts... so beautiful... so feral... augh.
youtube
^aspd mantra.
so anyways, then I fell into a 3hour nap and woke up to the sound of Parasite cooking dinner/lunch (pork chops n rice a roni), banging the spatula against the pot <3. And the first mental image that came to mind was of a tattoo design for a buckled rail, as a metaphor for having a hard time with your body, and doing what you're supposed to do especially when under heat and stress >_< cripple metaphorz, I guess...
📺 - Favourite show? This has been answered here:
🍂 - What’s your favourite season? ah god.... oh fuck.... *falls over and clutches my chest and sobs and weeps*
I'll attempt to keep this a little short, but mainly: my system is so fragmented, so compartmentalized and so blacked out of Sense Memories, and seasons are senses. My mom has bipolar (or schizoaffective bipolar, or Sadistic Personality Disorder + HPD + ASPD, or god knows what else) and Seasonal Affective Disorder, and I ended up with Seasonal Affective as well v_v I think most people end up with a Strong Sense Memory attached to, usually, only one season, usually Winter or Summer... that's at least what I see most often when people talk about it, if they talk about it at all, but I ended up with serious trauma that seemed intrinsically linked to each of the Seasonal Changes 😓 It doesn't help that I'm exquisitely sensitive to temperature/air pressure changes, and I'm more or less "severely" agoraphobic both on a physical level (outside is way too large) and on a mental level (i am so small and there are so many people out there, people who can and will stare at me, and the architecture, oh god!)...
I have a lot of good memories attached to each season, and a lot of bad memories as well... so I guess it's more about the minute moments contained within each swirling maelstrom of seasons. Going out to the city with my mom in late October on an unusually crisp, sunny day so I'm sweating under my leather jacket but the air is stinging my face. Laying down on the concrete in the middle of the road in early March, feeling the sun on my eyes. That first breath of fascination upon waking up to the first snowy morning, at any point in Winter, except for most of my life I lived in Washington so, sometimes there wouldn't even be snow :/ These are flash in the pan memories that stick out like little shimmering crystals in a sea of lead and blood.
Most of my positive associations with seasons also has to do with how nature changes alongside with it, seeing the trees die and regrow, rain falling or sun shining or clouds moving, animals present or not, etc... it's all very magical and wondrous. Listening to birdsong calms me down, and it's one of my nicer hallucinations usually when I'm awake in the early morning hours... god there is nothing better than being awake at 4am in the middle of summer and seeing the very first slivers of sunlight followed by birds waking up 🐦🦆🕊️🌅

Exploring Vietnam: Day 3 & 4 - Sleeper Train going to Hue from Da Nang + Imperial City in Hue
DAY 3 & 4 - a 2-day transfer from one city to another. In Da Nang, we saw the sunrise and were able to observe what a typical day it is in the city. We also had some unexpected circumstances like climbing the Marble Mountain!
Coming from Da Nang, we went to Hue to experience riding a sleeper train, trying some local food mainly originated in Hue, and seeing the Imperial City.
Third and fourth day in Vietnam were full of first time experiences. It was those experiences that I would want to remember and will never get tired of telling it to anyone.
DAY 3 JULY 24, 2019
MY KHE BEACH
Third day in Vietnam, we woke up extra early to see the sunrise along My Khe Beach. It was an amazing view to see early in the morning and a good way to start the day.
They were actually a lot of people in the beach. Some were swimming, others were jogging and having their exercises, and others were just sitting and resting along the beach.
MARBLE MOUNTAIN
Marble Mountain was next on our itinerary. We were early and the ticket booth wasn’t open yet. It says that Marble Mountain opens at 7am until 5:30 in the afternoon. Entrance fee costs VND 40,000/pax (PHP 88) and if you are going to ride the elevator, it will be VND 15,000/way (PHP 33). So if you will be riding it going up and down, it will be a total of VND 30,000 for the use of the elevator.
We waited for 7am but it seemed that there was no staff in the ticketing booth nor in the elevator. We asked some locals about it and we were pointed and directed to a stairs going up. They were directing us to go up.
We went up thinking there might be another ticketing booth there, but there were none. It was actually a very very steep stairs going up to Marble Mountain which was not on our plan. Before this trip happened, we fully decided to take the elevator and not to take the stairs since 3 of us have asthma.
We eventually ended up climbing the stairs and reaching a temple.
Char and I decided to stay in the area of the temple because it seems there were more steeper stairs upon going around the Marble Mountain. We then waited for our other friends until they were finished seeing the the other parts of the mountain.
While waiting, we had some photos taken in the area and some of it are below:
Afterwards, we went down Marble Mountain. and went back to our hotel to have our breakfast. The remaining time before check-out was spent in the hotel while preparing for our next destination: Hue, Vietnam.
SLEEPER TRAIN: DA NANG, VIETNAM >>> HUE, VIETNAM
This was the highlight of our trip: RIDING THE SLEEPER TRAIN! 🚃
We originally planned riding the sleeper train from Da Nang to Hanoi with a 16-hour travel time. However, we thought it might be uncomfortable to be in a train for 16 hours. We then decided to visit another city overnight which is Hue. Da Nang to Hue was just a 3-hour trip via train and we took the sleeper train for experience.
Our train ticket costs VND 110,000 (PHP 242) and VND 120,000 (PHP 264), and was bought from Baolau. The website was commonly used among tourist based on reviews and it seemed legit (and it is!) The price was different depending on the kind of sleeper train you will get. There were 4-bed and 6-bed sleeper trains. Although we were 5, we got the 4-bed sleeper train and booked a separate bed in another coach/room. Doing this, we made sure one coach will be privately for us for our safety and security of our things, and the luggage of our other friend were also put in our coach. The VND 110,000 ticket are for the top beds and VND 120,000 were for the lower ones.
Departure time of our train got delayed by an hour because the earlier trains was delayed too. Based from the reviews I read and vlogs I watched, the stations were quite unorganized and were not well kept. Fortunately, waiting area in Da Nang station was decent enough and was air-conditioned. We were early for our original departure time and we got seats in the waiting area. So it’s a very good tip to be early in the station to have seats while waiting. Also, there are food stalls just in case you’ll feel hungry.
Finding Coach 12, and we saw it only ends at 11 but we found out they’ll exchange the last couch with a sleeper train (Couch 12). We waited a few minutes until they were able to put the last couch with the main train.
Finally was able to settle down inside our couch! It was cleaner than expected and train was exactly spacious for 4 people.
Please don’t mind my things since I just put everything on my beds. Bags, extension cord for charging, food and other stuff on my bed! 😅😂
The Banh Mi from Ka Cong Cafe (Dowoon Cafe as we call it since one of the waiter looks like Dowoon from DAY6 😅😂) was our late lunch. The Banh Mi costs VND 55,000 (PHP 121).
The view from our sleeper train.
There were times that the ride going to Hue was a little bumpy but nonetheless, we were able to take a nap as we approached Hue. Before arriving at Hue, a staff knocked and let us know that Hue was approaching and told us to prepare for arrival.
HUE, VIETNAM
After three hours, we finally arrived at Hue! We checked-in first and settled down in Tin Tin Hostel before going out to explore Hue.
I was surprised to see Hue similar to Seminyak in Bali, Indonesia. I was thinking Hue was a quiet city but it was like Seminyak with all the restaurant and shops open at night until dawn.
MADAM THU: TASTE OF HUE
Madam Thu serves local Hue food and is the name of the owner of the restaurant. The place has been serving good Vietnamese food since the year 2007. It is open everyday from 8am to 10pm and is located at 45 Vo Thi Sau Hue City, Vietnam.
Banh Beo (Rice Cake with Diced Shrimp)
It was made from rice flour including freshly chopped shrimp and was served with sweet fish sauce. One serving costs VND 50,000 (PHP 110) and has 10 pieces.
Left: Nem Ran (Fried Spring Rolls) Right: Banh Uot (Grilled Por Wrapped Wet Rice Paper)
The Nem Ran (Fried Spring Rolls) was made with pork, mushroom, diced carrot and traditional seasoning. It was served with sweet and sour fish sauce. One serving costs VND 50,000 (PHP 110) and has 5 pieces.
The Banh Uot (Grilled Pork Wrapped Wet Rice Paper) costs VND 50,000 (PHP 110) and has 5 pieces. It has pork BBQ with herbs and poached bean sprout wrapped in wet rice paper, and was served with peanut sauce.
Banh Nam (Rectangular Dumpling)
Banh Nam or Rectangular Dumpling costs VND 55,000 (PHP 121) per serving that includes 10 pieces of dumpling. The dumpling was made from rice flour and stuffed with fresh shrimp and pork, and was wrapped with banana leaves then was steamed. Served with authentic fish sauce.
Banh Loc (Clear Dumpling)
Banh Loc or Clear Dumpling costs VND 55,000 (PHP 121) per serving that includes 10 pieces of dumpling. Clear Dumpling was made from cassava powder and stuffed with shrimp. It was wrapped with banana leaves, steamed, and was served with authentic fish sauce.
Overall, the dumplings were very very delicious and scrumptious! 😋 Every serving was a penny worth it. The dumplings at Madam Thu would really let you taste the authentic Vietnamese dumpling in Hue. I really recommend to visit Madam Thu to have your own personal experience with their dumplings. The staff at Madam Thu were also friendly and nice that the waiter even taught us the proper way to eat the dumplings. 👍 A plus point for the staff was they even try to have small talks such as the country we came from and if we loved the food they served (which was a totally YES!!)
THE RUSTIC KITCHEN
After all the dumplings, we had a little space for more food and ended up to this restaurant across our hostel, Tin Tin Hostel.
Our food for Rustic Kitchen was shared between us. We ordered Spaghetti Carbonara (Square ham, creamy sauces, egg's yolk) that costs VND 95,000 (PHP 209) and Spaghetti Seafood (Seafood sauce with prawns, calamari, clams and cherry tomatoes) that also costs VND 95,000 (PHP 209). Not in the picture, but we also ordered a medium Cheese Pizza for VND 165,000 (PHP 363). A separate dish was ordered for my other friend which was a meal of curry.
Both the pasta and pizza were good and serving was quite right for its price considering the area were full of tourists.
The Rustic Kitchen has walls with drawings of their customers which I think was lovely as it has a personal touch of customers who dined before.
After eating we a stroll around Hue and saw this beautiful bridges. I just noticed that bridges at Vietnam were beautiful and each design was different from the others.
Before calling it a day, we ended it with a cup of coffee from Highlands Coffee!

DAY 4 JULY 25, 2019
IMPERIAL CITY / ROYAL PALACE / IMPERIAL CITADEL
Day 4 was for the whole day at Hue, Vietnam and started at Imperial City/Royal Palace. From our hostel, we had about a 30-minute walk going to the Imperial City. It was actually a bit far but was manageable to get to the place.
Going inside the Imperial City requires a ticket. A ticket costs VND 150,000 (PHP 330) each for adults.
Hue was known as the capital of Vietnam in the past during the Nguyen Dynasty, thus, the presence of the Imperial City. The Imperial City was built and used solely for the Emperor and its officials.
Inside there was a place called, “The Forbidden Purple City,” where the Emperor and a handful of higher officials were only allowed to enter. But today, anyone can enter and see what remains in the Imperial City. The Imperial City got destroyed as time goes by, but mainly, it got destroyed during the Vietnam War.
The Imperial City has selected areas that photography nor videos were not allowed. Also, a proper dress code is observed within the Imperial City such as wearing shorts, sleeveless, and such is not allowed.
As we visited the Imperial City, there were areas where the restoration and rebuilding were at works.
It was a wonderful experience to be inside the Imperial City and seeing a glimpse of the past and a bit of history of Vietnam.
I think we spent around an hour or two looking around the city. If planning to visit, you may bring a fan and water since it was humid and hot when we visited last July 2019.
It’s a place worth a shot to visit and personally see the city built during the Nguyen Dynasty called Imperial City.
ELEGANT RESTAURANT
After the long walk going to Imperial City and back to our hostel, we had our lunch nearby at Elegant Restaurant. We decided to dine here since one, it’s the only restaurant that was open that time. Two, food choices was within our budget, and three, it’s near our hostel.
For my lunch, I ordered Grilled Chicken with Lemongrass Leaves. It is a chicken breast grilled on skewers served with steamed rice. Food was delicious and a plate costs VND 115,000 (PHP 253).
TA CAFE & BAKERY
There’s always room for dessert, as everyone says! For desserts, we decided to try TA Cafe & Bakery across our hostel.
I ordered a slice of Tiramisu that costs VND 38,000 (PHP 83.60). The Tiramisu was not that sweet which is how I liked it. My friends ordered Strawberry Yogurt and Pudding (Leche Flan).
We went back to our hostel to take a nap and had our last food tripping at Bun Bo Hue.
BUN BO HUE
Bun Bo Hue is only open on particular hours on 6:00AM to 11:00AM and next is from 3:00PM until 08:00PM
Bun Bo Hue is a Vietnamese dish with vermicelli and beef. A medium serving costs VND 40,000 (PHP 88) and the special is VND 50,000 (PHP 110).
I ordered the medium because I’m still full from the food we ate earlier. And to my surprise, the medium isn’t medium! The serving was big and was good for 2 people. I wasn’t able to finish it all up since I was so full already that time.
HUE AIRPORT
Going to the airport from our hostel, we booked a car service from Klook. We booked a car good for 12 because the car good for 5 pax can only carry up to 4 medium luggage. A 12 pax car service costs PHP 1,075 that can accommodate us, 5 people with 5 medium-sized luggage.
VIETNAM AIRLINES: HUE, VIETNAM >>> HANOI, VIETNAM
Last leg of our Vietnam trip will be in Hanoi, Vietnam! We booked a flight via Vietnam Airlines from Hue going to Hanoi.
If you want to see the other parts for my travel vlog in Da Nang and Hue, please do watch the video below:

Machias River Canoe Trip - Sunrise Canoe and Kayak
Sunrise Canoe and Kayak
Truly wild from headwaters to the sea, one of the few completely natural flowing rivers in the eastern US. 4 days, $590pp
Machias River, Eastern Maine
**Guided Canoe Trip Info for 2019**
PDF version
The Machias (muh-CHAI-yus) river flows through the remote woodlands of eastern Maine 75 miles from headwaters to the sea. Regarded as an adventurous and challenging wilderness canoe trip, the Machias is also nationally recognized for it's high concentration of valuable atlantic salmon rearing habitat.
In 1973 the last dam was removed from the Machias making the river and it's tributaries one of the largest naturally flowing river systems in the eastern United States. Today, nearly the entire Machias watershed has been preserved through conservation efforts ensuring the river's natural beauty, pristine wildlife habitat and recreational access for generations to come.
The word "Machias" is loosely translated as "bad run of water". True to it's name the river has a number of class III ledge-drop rapids spread throughout it's course which are a source for many fireside tales. These class III drops are relatively short and easy to scout which is advisable since the nature of these rapids can change as water levels fluctuate in early spring. Holmes falls is the only mandatory portage but depending on our itinerary and water levels we may elect to carry or line some of the hairier class III's.

Our Guided Trips
Our canoe trips are led by Master Maine Guides who have worked as professional river guides for over 20 years. All of our guides started on the Machias river in the early 1990's learning the basics of whitewater canoeing on the lower stretches then challenging themselves on the upper river and tributaries. Today, the Machias still remains at the top of the list for spring whitewater.
Before Your Trip
Our goal is to meet if not exceed your expectations while providing a river trip you will not soon forget. Your trip forms are very helpful to us in striving to meet this goal. Each individual should fill out and return a completed trip form to us at their earliest convenience.
Your guide will be in contact with you prior to your trip to answer any questions you might have concerning the trip or preparing for it. Your guide will also want your input in preparing the menu for the trip and may have specific questions for you after receiving your trip forms.
First Day Of Your Trip
Your guide(s) will meet you the morning of your trip and travel to the put-in. At the put-in, they will cover canoe packing procedures and conduct a basic dry-land canoeing/river orientation including a safety briefing. Then you will put in and head down river where you will encounter rapids on your first day!
Instruction
The Machias will challenge and strengthen your whitewater canoeing skills and your guides will be right there to help you get the most out of your Machias river experience!
Scouting wilderness whitewater and making decisions on how to best negotiate a rapid is a crucial skill for a wilderness canoeist. Your guides have been making these decisions for themselves and the parties they've led for over 20 years and they have run the rapids on the Machias at many different water levels with loaded and unloaded canoes. Even so, many of the rapids on the Machias need to be scouted first before making a decision on how to negotiate them because the water levels can change from day to day. Your guides will discuss and share their experience with you at each rapid helping you to make the best decision on how to negotiate them considering your skills and ability.
Solo canoeing is a specialty of your guides! If you have the basic skills and some experience solo canoeing in whitewater then the Machias will be a very rewarding experience for you! Your guide will coach and help hone your skills as a solo canoeist. Your guide will have individual conversations with you about how to negotiate each rapid while sharing their knowledge and experience with you as well as making recommendations for you based on your skill level.
Canoe poling is another skill your guides rely on and will be happy to teach you the basics. Many of the rapids on the Machias are difficult to pole with ledge and rock bottoms that are easy to get a pole stuck in but there are also beautiful stretches of gravel bottom river to pole as well especially at lower water levels.
Camping
Camp sites on the Machias river will have a fire ring, but not always a picnic table or privy. Other than these simple improvements, there are no other facilities available along the river corridor.
Meals
Morning and evening meals are prepared by your guide over an open fire. The entrees change each day. Typical morning meals include ham and eggs, french toast and bacon, and pancakes with sausage accompanied with fresh fruit, cereal, juice, coffee, and tea. Evening meals include chicken stir fry, breaded pork chops with green beans, marinated steak with rice, or pasta dishes with a hearty red or white sauce accompanied by appetizer, wine, and dessert. Lunches are buffet style with deli meats and cheeses, bread or wraps, fresh fruits and vegetables, pickles, chips, and cookies.
Your guide will go over the planned menu with you before your trip and welcome any input regarding personal preference or dietary requirements you may have.
Fishing
Fishing on the Machias river can productive for brook trout in the spring and generally decent action for smallmouth bass throughout the summer. The larger headwater lakes have healthy populations of white perch. Fishing licenses are required for anyone wishing to fish.
If you plan to fish, a Maine fishing license is required. 3-day, 7-day, and seasonal licenses can be obtained online through the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website (http://www.maine.gov/ifw/licenses_permits/fishing.htm) or at most fishing supply retailers.
Wildlife
Bald eagles are common sightings on the St. Croix and those with a keen eye may spot a couple nests along the way. Moose, white-tailed deer, black bear, and coyote also inhabit the St. Croix valley. Seeing a coyote or a black bear is extremely rare. It is possible to hear coyotes in the evening.
Bears along the waterway have not been a problem which may be an indication of how little use the river actually sees over the course of a year.
Last Day Of Your Trip
We will canoe to our take-out point on the morning of the last day planning to arrive there by noon. If your vehicle is parked in the Machias area this will ensure you are back at your vehicle and off to your next adventure by 2:30 pm. If we are transporting you party back to the Bangor area this will ensure we back at your hotel by 4:30 pm.

Bowery Bar & Fare ups the absurdity with deep-fried pretzels, towering cocktails, Australian street-food jaffles and Impossible meats. (Photos by Steve Mosco)
Rockville Centre tends to take on a carnival vibe when the sun goes down, so it is fitting that an eatery with a decidedly festival-like atmosphere has pitched its tent on the bar and restaurant strewn stretch.
With a black and white outdoor awning that belies an interior that is colorful in both its décor and menu, The Bowery Bar & Fare opened this past summer on Sunrise Highway. Taking over the spot of a well-worn Irish pub that sat in the location for close to 30 years, Bowery infuses new life into the space with a fresh concept—complete with food and drink options that make the brain buzz.
Repurposed carnival tents hang over about 40 tables in the front dining area, with more seats both in the bar area and at the actual bar, with yet more spots to be had in the back patio. Before looking at the menu, the eyes drift to a wall lined with stuffed animal prizes, parlor games, a DJ booth with vintage boomboxes and even more games outside, including giant versions of Jenga and Connect Four.
Chicago-style dog with curly fries
Signature cocktail
Beer-battered giant pretzel
Grilled cheese
A fall soup graces the menu for a limited time.
Kebabs
Gyro sliders
Butter cake
Save the games for later—first, it’s time to eat. The menu consists of street food and extreme eats from across the flavor spectrum. Aside from the ubiquitous buffalo wings, the Snacks and Apps menu delivers mini corn dogs, Bao street tacos, suppli (fried rice balls) and an absolutely raunchy beer-battered giant pretzel served with cinnamon sugar cream dip and a cheddar bacon ale dip. Deep fried and a great way to make friends, the pretzel is at its best dipped into that decadent cinnamon cream. The apple fennel soup, a starter found on the restaurant’s special fall menu, is especially noteworthy, as the concoction, served with a charred brie crostini, is all the evidence one needs to realize the food at Bowery is more than merely neon flair—there is a seasoned chef with serious culinary chops creating magic in the kitchen.
The fun continues as you slink down the menu, with kebabs and sliders. Along with chicken and lamb kebabs, Bowery also breaks the mold with Impossible Burger Kebabs, with cherry tomatoes, red onion and tzatziki. A meat alternative for those who crave more than mere falafel, the Impossible Burger has made its way onto various restaurant menus recently, with a flavor close enough to meat to utterly confuse the eater. As for sliders, along with sausage and pepper, Philly cheesesteak and chili dog sliders, Bowery also boasts gyro sliders with house-made gyro meat, onions, lettuce, tomato and tzatziki. That house-made gyro meat makes all the difference.
Carnival flavor is alive at the bar.
Bowery also offers burgers and dogs. Three styles of franks are listed, all served with curly fries, including Chicago style (“dragged through the garden”), Dirty Water (NYC’s take with onion sauce) and Chili Cheese. The Chicago style is brightly flavored and even includes the bright green relish rarely found on the East Coast. As for burgers, sure, there’s a cheeseburger—but then there’s the Donut Burger and Grilled Cheese Burger. As if you need to be told, the Donut Burger is served on a glazed donut, but also includes cheddar, applewood smoked bacon and Bowery sauce. It’s a high caloric investment, but worth the risk for a night out. However, even the Donut Burger stands in awe of the Grilled Cheese burger, which swaps out the standard bun for two grilled cheese sandwiches. Goodnight, folks.
More fun between bread is the Jaffle, an Australian street food that exists somewhere between a waffle and a panini. Jaffles available include prosciutto and mozzarella, chicken, falafel, pulled pork and Reuben. But the best Jaffle is perhaps the simplest: ham and Swiss served with fig jam. It is sweet and salty, buttery and crispy. Finally, main dishes at Bowery include Tacos Al Pastor, skirt steak, chicken paella, fish and chips, and a mammoth pulled pork poutine with cheddar and country gravy served over curly fries.
Of course, the signature cocktail menu shines with over-the-top liquid courage, like the Strongman, Fire Eater, Human Cannonball and Fun House. There’s also alcohol-infused snow-cones and more than 20 beers on tap—including a custom fall brew by Barrage Brewing Company, the Bowery Brunette, a cinnamon apple pie beer. And at the end of the meal, be sure to get the butter cake—topped with ice cream, it lovingly takes the edge off.
The Bowery Bar & Fare, 300 Sunrise Hwy., Rockville Centre; 516-493-9023; www.theboweryrvc.com

Took the public bus to Northpoint City at Yishun Central to have dinner and do some light grocery shopping. Walked to our usual haunt at Feng Food (台湾味 “丰”) which has two units on opposite side of the food street. At the time when other businesses are scaling down or closing, they are doing the exact opposite which is expanding. Anyway, we came early to avoid the peak hours dinner crowds. Mum order her bowl of Guan Miao Mian with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (猪排关庙面). Dry style handmade wavy and wide noodles in savoury sauce topped with a succulent piece of pan-fried porkchop and pickled cucumber slices.
I am more of a rice person, so I went for the Sunrise Crispy Chicken Cutlet Rice (日出鸡腿排饭). Served in a large blue porcelain bowl with the chicken cutlet occupying half the space. A portion of jasmine rice drizzled with braised minced pork gravy and an over easy egg on top. The savoury boneless chicken drumstick is crispy outside, yet juicy inside but not greasy. Come with two sides of pickled cucumber and vegetable to cleanse the palate.

Asian Food (part 2)
(Updated in Jun'18)
So here's the second part of the never-ending eating adventure. Lol. I'm having some regrets doing this because I would suddenly crave for these yummy food while writing. Sigh. But anyway -
CHINA (2) (3)
My first legitimate backpacking was China. I know it's a little weird because I could have chosen one from Southeast Asia instead. My trip was well prepared and planned except for food. I thought it should be easy because I frequently eat Chinese food in the Philippines. Ah, of course I was mistaken. Language barrier was difficult, especially in Beijing. The food menu would not have English translation. Such horror, I had to resort to charades and guessing game. Not everything I ate made me happy because I have not guessed it right, but at least it was super cheap.
I had a little difficulty coming up with the list for China considering I've been to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and lately in Guangzhou for business trip. I thought about it to understand why. I think it's also because I've already had very good Chinese food from my home country and the other Asia ones. I have a lot of Filipino-Chinese friends and we often go eat at Chinese restaurants. So I tried hard to think for anything uniquely yummy there so here it goes anyway:
1. Peking duck! One of the perks of business trips - you get to eat at not so cheap restaurants and our associate director paid for it (technically it's the company). I didn't try this during my backpacking trip. I am not a fan of peking duck as before I tasted this authentic one, the ones I tried are fatty, served warm only, and worse with cucumber (here in the Philippines), lol!! I hate cucumber. Too bad I was too shy to take a photo, not just of the food but also while it was cooked in the oven. Uhm, not a sight for vegans though. Anyway, there were small containers with fire underneath when it was served in our table. Even the wrap had that container so everything was hot. But also very delicious. The duck that was served to us was not fatty. Also, I learned that the crispy skin is dipped in sugar and not just the hoisen sauce. Lastly, the other ingredients were served separately so I didn't have to worry about the cucumber. Hahaha. I'm going back in January. Let's see if we can eat there again and if I can already take photos.
2. When I finally had more time to explore. I bought jianbing for breakfast. I am not very sure if I got the name correctly. Back in the time I was enjoying this yummy crepe-like sandwich thing, I had no idea what it’s called. All I know is that there's a long line in this stall. For only 5 RMB, I am already full and happy with my breakfast. I could have chosen other meat that’s cheaper, actually, but I’m fine with this. It’s one of the food that I’m definitely looking for again when I return to Beijing in the future.
Here's my jianbing from 2011.
And then I did return to Beijing in 2018, and bought a bigger jianbing for RMB 11.
3. I had to try and find if I have a photo of the Schezuan spicy pork we had somewhere in Xian as we took a break from exploring the Terracotta warriors. I recall this dish swims in so much oil but I remember I like how spicy it is that it's perfect to eat with rice. See the reason I had to recall is because that was from seven years ago. Hahaha. But I would definitely like to try these Schezuan dishes again.
3. I have to replace this with the drink below from Hui Lau Shan. So I don't really know what is its official name but we're calling it mango pomelo sago with coconut milk. After discovering this I almost had this drink daily. Lol!! So this is obe of the things I am looking forward to when I go back tk Guangzhou this year :)
4. There were meals when I had to eat alone. This translates to eating somewhere already familiar as much as possible. So I went inside a restaurant, not really looking at its name. My basis was looking at their menu from the outside. I saw a yummy-looking noodle soup so I was attracted. But then the other page had a variety of xiao long bao! I walked in Crystal Jade! So this is familar. I liked the pork and cheese xiao long bao. For some, it might taste a bit weird because there's a hint of sweetness from the cheese but the natural sauce and meat were awesome! I ended up eating here again after the first night.
5. I’m also adding this breaded prawn wrapped in red rice noodle. Okay so like the mango pomelo sago, I don’t know the actual name of this yummy food. Maybe I will learn about it next visit.
6. I am so sorry (or not really) for extending the list but Grandma’s Kitchen’s chicken (I think boiled in some tea) is awesome. This restaurant actually has become a favorite for me ever since I tried last November 2017. Not only is the food yummy, they have English menu and affordable prices too. I liked this too much that I tried this in both Beijing and Guangzhou last January.
CAMBODIA (1)
It's a little unfortunate that this is one of the trips where I was not too conscious yet of ensuring only yummy food goes into my tummy. Also, we tend to sacrifice yummy food if we have a jam-packed while-day itinerary. This is because we could have been stuck somewhere within the tourist (or sometimes unknown) area where we only aim to eat at least decent food. So with Angkor Wat so big, we spent the whole day - from sunrise to sunset, roaming around. Thus, few opportunities to try a lot.
1. I dunno if we were just hungry but this steak from some grill restaurant along Wat Bo road filled our stomachs. I added the photo of the other food we ordered which are just as yummy.
2. Blue Pumpkin has a full menu but I was only able to try its bakery where I immediately had a favorite in the form of chocolate chip cookies. Too bad because I only learned about it on our last day and so sadly, I didn't get a chance to eat a meal.
HONGKONG (3)
Similar to Thailand, my challenge in HK is to come up with a short list only. HK has a little "disadvantage" though because even the non-HK foodies in HK are so good too. I don't know why! You'll see what I mean from my list. Hahaha. It was only in my second visit that I had full appreciation of the food because we had intense itinerary the first time. I didn't really want my stomach full riding the roller coasters, right? Hear, hear!
1. Ichiran ramen is the bomb! I know, I know. I would transfer this to Japan when I get the chance to finally be there. Coincidentally, I also tried my first legit ramen during my first i.e. Ramen Nagi. Then there was influx of ramen in Manila. But I like Ichiran's the most. Simple and straight-forward it won't confuse your taste buds, lol!! - > yep, to be finally transferred to Japan list :D
2. Australian Dairy Company's egg pudding. We made sure we line up early because loooooong line! It doesn't look special but it's simplicity will take you away.
3. Pineapple bun from Dimdimsum - everything yum here also (and relatively cheap if I may add). But I am calling it out because I hate pineapple buns but I love this pineapple bun! I didn't know it's possible but Dimdimsum made it happen.
4. Delicious Kitchen's pork chop rice. I admit it was a bit oily but it's yummy and in relatively generous serving.
Sometimes I'm okay to go back to Hongkong even if I don't have much to do but just eat. I still have a long list of to-try food! Oh gosh, I wanna come back now!
SOUTH KOREA (1)
Going back to my post about my Seoul trip, I shared how we didn't eat a lot. Like Chinese food, we have a lot of legitimate Korean food in Manila that it's not too far away from food in Seoul. Also, there are numerous Korean stores here that my favorite Korean snacks are so accessible. So I pretty much have a short list:
1. Banana milk is a weird choice but I had a better appreciation after last month's Guangzhou trip. Banana milk there was USD 2+ and I just thought that's expensive. Imagine my happiness when S&R (our local Costco equivalent) started selling banana milk. I would buy a box with a dozen tetra paks that would translate to roughly USD 0.60/piece. I've been addicted ever since.
2. Authentic and cheap bibimbap here. My friends said this is relatively cheap because ee bought this in the university area.
3. Home-made "Choco Pie" from a random stall just along Myeongdong streets. I never really liked the commercial ones. But the home-made version of chocolate-coated marshmallow sandwiched by two cookies is just the bomb! My friends who again do bot like food in general, didn't really understand my fascination why I buy this daily. One even said, I should just buy a several for our whole stay there. But why would I - twice I bought it while it's still warm, and it's winter at that time!! Nothing beats fresh, my dears.
So I actually have more but still on the snacks and noodles. I'll definitely update the list when I get a chance to go back. No plans yet but I might as promo fares permit.

Review: Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Samal Island
Out of Town Blog Review: Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Samal Island
Pearl Farm Beach Resort Review
There’s nothing quite like paradise. And fortunately, this-so-called paradise is just within our island. Just a 2-hour plane ride, and a 45-minute boat ride from the city proper – you’re off to a luxurious escapade you’ve never experienced before. If you think you’ve seen the best of the beaches here in the Philippines – wait until you step foot at one of the most beautiful hotels and resorts in the country – the Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Samal Island (resort info).
Pearl Farm Beach Resort Pool
Aside from being the hometown of our President, Davao is also home to the kind and genuine Davaoenos, the freshest catch of tunas, the Malagos chocolate, and white sand beaches. There are lots of great hotels around Davao, but if you want to take vacation to a different level – then we recommend you visit Pearl Farm Beach Resort.
Pearl Farm Beach Resort (resort reviews) is the only 5-star beach hotel resort in Davao. It has a sprawling 14-hectare idyllic view of the calm Davao Gulf and here’s how to travel if you’re from Manila:
Usually, travel time will usually take less than 2 hours. Once you arrive, there will be a 10-15 minute drive from the airport to the Marina Wharf. This is where you’ll ride a boat going to the beach resort. Take note that the boat schedule is only from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. going to the resort, and if you plan on going back to the city, it’s 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. only. You can grab a coffee at Café Marina while waiting.
Experience the Mindanaoan Inimitable Hospitality
Just minutes before alighting our boat, we can sight the hotel staffs waving at us. We were welcomed by the staff’s warm smiles and served with complimentary drinks. We stayed at the first floor of the 2-storey parola to rest. The welcoming committee sure did prepare every guest arrival. There’s even a traditional performance with a kulintang as we rested. The weather was nice, just an amount of guests, tropical trees and white sand surrounding us – everything was perfect.
As we were about to head over at the reception lounge, we were amazed with the well-designed front office. The staff were so accommodating and they immediately requested for a shuttle service to give us a ride to our room. We passed by several facilities and various stilt houses along the way. There was a basketball and volleyball court, a clinic, and more villas.
Stay at One Of Their Most Commendable Rooms
Our pick-up service gave us a ride on our cottage, which was at the end of the island. Which was grand because we can enjoy the rest of the white sand all to ourselves. Suite!
There are no words on how amazing our room was. Talk about modern design meets traditional decors. On the outside, it’s just a simple nipa cottage, but surprisingly, the inside tells a different story. The room is well-decked, furnished with 2 beds and comfy sheets, a harmony of colors for a tropical vibe, surrounded by handmade Mindanaoan craft including the duvet, the curtain, and an all-wood ceiling fan.
Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Davao
Best part? The ocean view from our glassed window. I had never seen the Mt.Apo before, had understood its majestic view only on history textbooks. But with the view from our balcony of our room, it’s made placid by the calm waters of Davao gulf – it was divine. More likely, you’ll prefer opening the window and have an open-air room to let the breeze come in. Catch the amazing sunrise and sunset with your windows open! It’s an Instagram-worthy moment, I promise.
There’s also a cabled TV, a safety box, mini refrigerator, coffee maker, and complimentary drinks and chocolates.
Once you head over to the bathroom, you’ll see complete amenities and toiletries. It’s also equipped with warm and cold shower.
If you plan on traveling with your friends or family, Pearl Farm also has villas for large groups. You can choose to stay at the Malipano Villa which some of them has 3 bedrooms, and other has 4. They have a spacious veranda where you can hold a barbeque party if you like.

The Beachhouse
Winds whistled among leaves of trees, and all was calm on that somber August afternoon. Sounds of crashing waves could be heard along the beach side, among other commotion of children and adult alike enjoying themselves among the coast. Sunlight beamed down upon me, seemingly exceptionally hot for a summer’s day. “Seems a good day as any for a trip to the market, I suppose.”I thought to myself as I hopped onto my bicycle and set off past the beach panorama and onto the distant roadways. Fortunately, the city life was a mere cycle away from my little paradise, but just far enough to remain unscathed. The streets were filled with faces of cheery folk and festive streets, just the way I liked it. However, there was no time to admire the view, as somebody back home was waiting for a very important delivery. “Left, right, left, left, right…” Despite living here for just under a year, I had these streets memorized like the back of my hand and soon enough found myself at the cycle parking lot, nestled under the shady rooftop of the supermarket. Parking my two-wheeler, I ventured inside, peacefully, but with a tad bit of haste. Reaching into my back pocket, I pulled out a small folded note, a shopping list. The design of the note was adorable, littered with small dancing fruits and vegetables, and a perching carton of milk to boot. She always figured i’d find it silly or too much, but to me it was perfect. “Milk, eggs, green onion, pork…..” The list went on, but it was not surprising. After all, it was quite an important day. Aisle by aisle, the pursuit of meat and vegetables continued. I even picked up a few small extra snacks for myself, some seaweed strips and a Kit Kat. I swung by the bakery, as well as the garden center as there was also two very important items to collect. As soon as the list was completed, I made my way to the checkout, complete with a smiling clerk. After all, who could be upset on a day such as this? “Is this everything for you?” She asked. “I would hope so.” I replied, with a pinch of humor. Assisting with the bagging of groceries, she let loose a final smile and a parting “Have a Nice Day”, before repeating the process with the mother behind me. Proceeding out of the store, I make my way back to the bicycle rack, to find my trusty red bike awaiting my return. With the groceries loaded up, I begin the journey back home. The breeze across my body felt wonderful, and the cruise home seemed slightly more cozy. After what seemed to be about ten minutes, I had returned to my small slice of paradise. Now, this house wasn’t like what you see in the celebrity shows of wealth, but to me it was priceless. A small home, big enough for two to live, but it’s welcoming aura seemed to attract more. Brown shingles lines the rooftop, with a pleasant green coat of paint for the exterior. “What a beautiful home.” I thought to myself, before suddenly realizing that that response was not the only thing that was beautiful. She was beautiful too. Exquisite, even. Maybe it was the way that she did her hair, short, but with some bounce to the bangs. I suppose it could be the way her eyes sparkled, like a clear lake dancing under a warm sunrise. Her skin was always so soft, often a mystery to a guy like myself, but it was almost irresistible to hold her hand in my own. She didn't notice me coming into the house, so I took advantage of this to approach behind her and slink my hands around her shoulders, across her chest and with a small kiss to the side of her forehead. No words were shared, but only her head tilting back to let her eyes meet up with mine, and a smile that melted my stress and worries away. I let out a small laugh as I rub her back and proceed to head back to retrieve the groceries. Soon after, when the supplies are moved to where they need to be, i grab a soft hand cloth and slowly move it up and tie it over her eyes, hoping she doesn’t get too surprised. “What’s this for, darling?” She asks sheepishly. “It’s only for a moment, sweetpea.” I assure her as I return to the bike to grab a couple of last things. Simply, a bouquet of daffodils and a small strawberry cake. I normally love to spoil my lady any day of the week, but today is her birthday and she deserves only the finest. After all, how else can I show my appreciation to my sunshine? I then take the flowers and put them in some water, as well as smuggle the cake into the fridge, both trying to be as well hidden as possible. Then, with swiftness and care, I sweep her off her feet, carrying her like a princess, and bring her to the living room. I lie her down on the couch and remove the blindfold and deliver a small kiss to her lips while telling her to take the day off and relax. After all, it was her birthday, and nobody needs to stress over simple chores on their day. Proceeding back into the kitchen, I ignite the gas stove, and retrieve a handful of ingredients, for tonight was going to be her favourite dish: pork cutlets, with a side of fried rice and veggies. Turning on some soothing music, I began preparing ingredients and the cooking commenced. Whilst chopping some asparagus, a stalk fell on the floor, and as I reached down to grab it, I raise my head and see an unfamiliar sight: that sweet girl of mine is peeping on my cooking with such a bright smile on her face. “What a voyeur we have here, eh?” I jokingly comment “Only for your cooking, babe. Don’t get any ideas.” she remarks with a smirk. “Well when I turn around, you better be back on that couch relaxing or else there’s gonna be-”. Before I could finish that sentence, she was gone back to the couch, giggling to herself. “Too cute.” I whimsically pondered to myself as I finished the cooking. An hour passes, as I finally assemble two quaint looking dishes, hopefully being enough to impress her. I dim some of the lights, light a few candles and present the roses as the centerpiece of the table. I call her over and pull her chair out as she seats herself, to which I push her towards the table. Dinner commenced, and it was wonderful, filled with the usual silly jokes and small food play fight. By the end, the sun was setting and our cheeks had hurt from laughing too much. After a few slices of cake, I put away the dishes, and led her out to the beachside patio, where we sat together in each other’s arms watching the sun go down. We layed there, with full bellies and full smiles, admiring the quiet but wonderful life we shared. As it got mildly darker, I told her to not move, as I initiated the final part of the birthday plans for her. Returning with a small card, I cuddled up close to her and let her read it. As she read it, I Confess to her that I will never leave her side, as I produce a small felt box from my pocket and slide it into her hand. She opens it, revealing a small golden locket, with a latch on the side. Lifting the latch, it reveals to a photograph of the very first date we went on, at the local fair with mouths full of cotton candy. A dorky idea, but she tells me she loves it nonetheless. As the sun sets, I tell her I promise to be faithful by her side, from now until the end. “Is that a promise you’re willing to keep?”. She quietly asks. “It’s a promise i’ll go till the end to fulfill.” As we softly kiss until the sky becomes dark, and we rest our heads for the night to the sounds of crashing waves, and the whistling of the breeze among the leaves.

Journey across Sun Moon Lake
Continuing our journey from Cingjing Farm (清境农场), the day’s route will take us through:
Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) -> Checheng (車城) -> Jiji Train Station (集集車站) -> Sanyi (三義)
With a strategic view of Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) from the rooftop of Sun Moon Lake Teacher’s Hostel (日月潭教師會館), I woke up early to catch the beautiful sunrise.
After a quick and delicious breakfast, it was off to the famous Dragon Phoenix Temple (龍鳳宮月老廟) to pray for a good match from “Yue Lao” (月老).
Soon, it was time for our 9:30am ferry ride across Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), so we quickly made our way to the ferry terminal.
One of the most famous items in Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) are the tea leave eggs (阿嬷茶葉蛋) available from this store. The eggs were delicious and it was well worth the ferry ride to reach this store.
As noon approaches, we returned back to shore and took a bus to Checheng (車城) to catch a train to Jiji Train Station (集集車站). Numerous train tracks were built in Checheng (車城) to facilitate the construction of a nearby power station. During its heyday, it held the title of “Little Taipei” with thousands working and living here. However, once the power station was completed, the area was abandoned before it was revitalized by the logging and tourism industry.
Before exploring Checheng (車城), we had to try the famous railway bento which comprised of rice served with a stewed egg, broccoli, black fungus, and a choice of pork chop or chicken drum stick.
Since it was still a couple of hours before the train ride to Jiji Train Station (集集車站), I just took a leisurely stroll around the town to discover its history and its beautiful scenery.
2:30pm came along and we boarded the train for a 15 minute train ride to reach Jiji Train Station (集集車站).
After a quick pitstop at Jiji Train Station (集集車站), it was time to resume our bus ride to Sanyi (三義) which is famous for producing beautiful wooden carvings and statues.
A quick dinner at a local restaurant and it was a long bus ride back to home sweet home at New Taipei City ( 新北市).
It was a fun two day road trip and I would highly recommend the route to everyone!
As a quick recap, here’s the route that we took for our adventure:
Cingjing Farm (清境农场) -> Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) -> Checheng (車城) -> Jiji Train Station (集集車站) -> Sanyi (三義)

One of mum’s favourite dining outlet in Northpoint City is Feng Food (台湾味 “丰”). And this Guan Miao Mian with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (猪排关庙面) is her must order dish. She loves the springy and chewy handmade wavy noodles and that juicy pan-fried pork chop.
I had the limited Sunrise Crispy Chicken Cutlet Rice (日出鸡腿排饭) though I have never encountered them being sold out. Love that big piece of crispy boneless chicken leg paired with an over easy egg. The rice is drizzled with the gravy from the braised pork and refreshing pickled cucumber and vegetable for the sides.

Mum only wants to eat the same tried and tested foods every time we went out but me and my trusty camera like to experience new dishes. We both love Feng Food (台湾味 “丰”) which sells Taiwan-style foods so that is a compromise.
Yeah, mum went for the same old Guan Miao Mian with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (猪排关庙面) at S$12.80+. Between this and the fried rice version, I preferred the latter as I am the “rice bucket” kind of guy. :D The pork chop is flavourful with the ginger seasoning coming through and the meat so tender and juicy.
As for me, I picked this limited Sunrise Crispy Chicken Cutlet Rice (日出鸡腿排饭). Limited as in they only have a fixed number of this S$13.80+ dish to sell each day. A big piece of boneless chicken leg fried crispy occupied one half of the bowl. The white rice is drizzled with the gravy from their braised pork and topped with an over easy egg. Coupled with two side dishes of pickled cucumbers and vegetables to complete the dish. Just from looking at it already makes your mouth waters.
