Sam/Deena deciding to travel across country looking for other hauntings like Sunnyvale/Shadeyside
A) Thank you for the prompt! You are the best!
B) I have no idea why I thought I could write anything "short" or "fast" so...
C) I kinda took the idea of this prompt but changed it up some too? I hope that's okay! I played around with the idea but didn't follow it exactly. Sorry anon! I hope you still enjoy this!
For the record, sheâs doing this for Sam.
Literally no one would be surprised, seeing as she does most things for Sam. Including foregoing the perfectly nice and perfectly cheap camp site in favor of the bed and breakfast that had made Sam literally squeal and nearly poke Deena in the eye as sheâd all but crawled out of her seat, jabbing her finger toward the windshield. âWe should totally stay there tonight!â
Even as sheâd made the U-turn, Deena had offered her protests, grumbling about how the camping fee was only five bucks and how the place was probably booked anyway. Even as sheâd pulled into the parking lot, sheâd argued that they were going to have to re-do their road trip budget because of this and the people who ran this place probably wouldnât be all that interested in renting a room to a pair of recent high-school graduates. But theyâd slept the last night in their car -which was not all it was cracked up to be- in a campsite that had promised showers and delivered a spigot in the ground and Sam had forgiven this oversight even as sheâd stood shivering in her bra and underwear with icy water dripping from her skin and onto the grass so okay, fine, she can do this for Sam.
Even if the place gives her a little bit of the creeps.
Which Deena would never admit.
The front steps creak as they walk up them and itâs just barely evening, the sky still brushed with golds and pinks and yellows and Deena is grateful for the light as she pushes the door open to what the handmade sign stuck in the window calls a âcheerful little bed and breakfast.â The place smells old but in a way that makes it feel homey rather than full of dust and rats that are going to eat her face when she closes her eyes and the lobby looks like it was decorated somewhere around 1910 and never updated.
Sam is immediately charmed, her face brightening as she goes to brush her fingers along the tassels hanging from a fabric lampshade and then across the lace doilies hanging like spiderwebs across the surface of the table. âThis place is cute,â she says, glancing toward Deena, who is currently in the midst of a staring contest with a taxidermized weasel. âDonât you think so? Better than sleeping in the car.â
When she phrases it like that, itâs obvious. Because duh sleeping in the car really sucks. It had seemed like something that might almost be fun, charming, when theyâd started planning out their escape from Union, like sleeping in the car was the equivalent to sleeping under the stars or something. Though, the reality of it makes Deena wonder if she might not still have a little Sarah Fier inside her, assuring her that anything that doesnât involve cornhusks stuffed into a mattress and a hole in the ground is a luxury.
âAre you sure about this place,â Deena mumbles, reaching for Samâs hand and tugging her back so she isnât talking across the lobby for the whole place to hear. âItâs a littleâŚcreepy. And how do you know the people who donât own this place arenât going to like bury us out back for sharing a bed or something?â
Thereâs a quick flicker of doubt across Samâs eyes at her words, enough to make Deena regret having spoken at all, even if she was mostly joking. But then she smiles, scrunching up her nose as she gives Deenaâs hand a squeeze. âAt least there are beds here,â she points out. âAnd Iâm tired. And hungry. Come onâŚwhereâs your sense of adventure?â
âProbably still under the Shadyside Mall,â Deena teases but she swallows up further protests, following Sam toward the front desk and not reaching out to stop her when Sam taps lightly on the silver bell waiting on the counter.
Everything feels like an adventure where Sam is concerned. Thereâs something inherently thrilling about just being here with her in this moment. Or any moment. Singing along with the radio or simply letting the miles pass them in silence, Samâs hand on hers, feels thick with adventure, with promise, with the idea that anything could happen next and Deena would welcome it.
Even, apparently, a bed and breakfast where the lobby is decorated with more ceramics than Deena wouldâve imagined existed in this entire world. Â Â Â
There had been a moment, more than one, where sheâd seen it all. Sam, slipping through her fingers. Her life, without Sam in it. Sheâs lived in that world, thank you very much, those two minutes where sheâd been wet and trembling and feeling fear like a living thing trying to crawl its way out of her throat, where sheâd seen Sam pale and unmoving and dead, dead, dead because Deena had killed her. A world without Sam. A world where she didnât get her back.
It makes even the smallest of moments feel like getting away with something, like Deena might never get sick of it, of any of it. Of teasing Sam because she snores or defending her French fries from Samâs quick fingers or getting to kiss Sam as they drive down a stretch of highway with no one else around for miles.
Sam glances over her shoulder, lifting her eyebrow and Deena can tell that sheâs debating ringing the bell once more, just like Deena is debating saying âsee, I told you soâ when a woman who looks closer to eighty than not emerges with a smile on her face. âSorry, dear, just doing some paperwork in the back.â She slips behind the desk, putting her thin fingers onto the countertopâs surface. âHow can I help you?â
âJust a room for the night,â Sam says with a polite smile on her face. âIf you have one.â
âOh sure,â the woman says, nodding and causing a strand of wispy white hair to slip free from the bun on top of her head. âNot quite full tonight.â
Deena contemplates the mounted deer head on the wall, the antlers strung with cobwebs. âDo you guysâŚget a lot of visitors?â
Sam gives her a pointed look that Deena pretends to miss, keeping her focus on the unfortunate Bambi. The woman doesnât seem to notice the skepticism in Deenaâs voice. âMost nights we have a few rooms rented out,â she says, pulling out a thick ledger and lifting a pen that Deena is surprised isnât made of a feather or something. âName, dear?â
Deena lets Sam handle this part, wandering around the lobby to get the full view of the place sheâs agreeing to sleep tonight. Thereâs a dining room off to the right, a fire simmering low in the spacious hearth despite the fact that itâs June and definitely not cold outside. The wall is full of black and white and sepia tinged photos of old people, more than half of them holding up guns or posing awkwardly with children or animals. Thereâs one wall entirely dedicated to framed newspaper and magazine clippings and it takes Deena a beat to realize all the clippings are about the Winslow Bed and Breakfast and another second to notice theyâre all about ghost hunts and hauntings.
Great.
âYou two seem like youâre a long way from home,â the woman is saying to Sam as she hands back her driverâs license. âWhat brings you out here?â
âItâs kind of aâŚroad trip?â Sam says with a shrug. âThough weâre eventually going to make it to the city where weâre going to college.â
The woman smiles brightly, nodding. âOh, I remember those days. Taking trips and spending time with my friends.â
Sam glances toward Deena with a smirk, which only grows when Deena rolls her eyes comically for Samâs benefit.
âI thought you might be interested in our ghosts,â the woman continues, pulling open a drawer and retrieving a large brass key. âThatâs why most people come in to stay with us.â
âGhosts?â Sam repeats while Deena says, âYeah, I was just reading your articles.â She points toward the wall. âImpressive.â
The woman certainly seems to think so, her smile hardly faltering as she hands the key over to Sam. âItâs made us quite famous, you know. This place has been haunted nearly since it was built in 1857.â
Well, that explains the dĂŠcor.
âBuilt on the remains of an old hospital, you know,â the woman tells Sam with a slightly mischievous smile. âVery tragic. Lots of restless spirits.â She taps the key in Samâs hand and says breezily, âWell, youâll be on the third floor, room three. With Tom.â
Deena arches an eyebrow. âSorry?â
âTom, heâs the spirit on that floor.â
If Deena hadnât spent a few days in October fighting undead serial killers, murdering and resurrecting her girlfriend, traveling back in time to the 1600s, and taking down the devil worshiping sheriff then she would definitely think this woman was totally off her rocker. Instead, she just thinks this lady is a littleâŚeccentric. âOh. Right.â
The woman nods. âHeâs mostly harmless. Not likeâŚâ Her expression darkens somewhat. âEzekiel. But we try not to let people stay in his rooms.â
Sam takes a step back from the counter, holding up the key. âWellâŚthanks forâŚthis one.â
âOh, of course, dear.â The womanâs smile returns. âUnfortunately, our kitchen is closed for the night but there are vending machines on every floor. Let me know if you need any change. And weâll have breakfast served in the morning. Sleep well and enjoy your stay.â
Once theyâre out of ear shot, Deena bumps her shoulder into Samâs, leaning closer to her girlfriend. âSleep well,â she teases, drawing out the words and tickling the back of Samâs neck to elicit a laugh, grinning when Sam twists away from her. âWatch out for Ezekiel.â
Sam gives her a playful shove in response, not pulling away when Deena catches her hand, letting her fingers encircle her wrist. âOh, so ghosts are where you draw the line of believability?â
They start up the stairs trying not to drag their suitcases loudly behind them even though with each step Deena is feeling less and less enthusiastic about being on the third floor. Where does Ezekiel sleep? If heâs on the ground floor, then sheâs willing to take her chances with him.
Sam unlocks the door with the key, the lock clunking as it slides away, and the room looks much like Deena wouldâve expected given the rest of the place. At least it seems clean and there arenât pictures of dead-eyed settlers on the wall or anything, just crooked canvases bearing paintings of mountain sunsets and flowers stuffed into a vase. Sam makes a circuit of the room, poking her head into the bathroom and into the tiny closet, seeming to deem it all acceptable judging by the way she flops down onto the bed.
âUp to your standards?â Deena teases, impressed that a cloud of dust doesnât puff out around her.
âWell itâs not the back seat of a car but itâll do I guess.â Sam closes her eyes, folding her hands across her stomach.
Deena canât resist the urge to glance away, tightening her jaw against the memory of Sam still and lifeless on the grocery store floor. Sheâd hoped leaving Shadyside would help her leave those thoughts behind and while the passing months have certainly helped, the memories still hit her sometimes, catching her completely by surprise. Like, for example, in a bed and breakfast in the middle of nowhere because the lamplight falling across Samâs face makes her look pale and ghastly.
Or maybe this place really is haunted.
âBut you know the best part?â Samâs voice wrenches Deena blessedly away from her thoughts and she lets out a little sigh of relief, glancing back toward Sam. âWe get to actually cuddle.â She pats the mattress beside her.
Deena smirks. âOh yeah? What would Tom say?â
Sam sits up, a grin across her face. âWhat if this place really is haunted?â
âThen weâre sharing a room with a ghost,â Deena deadpans. âIs that what you want?â
âMaybe,â Sam drawls playfully. She stands, crossing the room to where theyâd dropped their bags. âIâm going to take a shower. I still smell like the water from the campsite.â
They both do, that mineral tang that hadnât escaped Deenaâs notice as sheâd kissed Sam or pressed her face to the crook of her shoulder, making Sam smell slightly unfamiliar, a reminder that theyâve finally left Shadyside behind.
While Deena listens to the water run, she digs through their bags, trying to scrounge up as much change as she can without having to go back down those stairs and out into the car to dig around for quarters. Thankfully she manages to find a handful of coins to go along with the crumpled bills stuffed into Samâs jeans pocket, the rumbling in her stomach reason enough to brave both the ghosts and the winding hallways in an effort to find the aforementioned vending machines.
At least they are decently stocked, though after a few days of driving and surviving mostly on gas station snacks, Deena isnât exactly thrilled to once again have Twix bars for dinner. She gets as much variety as she can before heading back toward the room, her feet silent on the carpeted hallways. In fact, everything around her is silent, which only adds to the creep-factor of the place, making it feel like the eyes of all the photos on the wall are following her progress.
âFuck you, Tom,â Deena mumbles as she pulls open the door to the room, slamming it closed behind her with a little more effort than necessary.
Sam is sitting on the edge of the bed wrapped in a towel, running a comb through her wet hair. âAre you okay?â She looks mildly amused by her question.
Deena tosses her a Butterfinger rather than answer. âDinner is served.â
After they eat what theyâve generously termed dinner, Sam gets dressed, wearing an old shirt of Deenaâs, which makes it slightly more difficult for Deena to remember why she needs to leave Sam sitting alone on the bed in order to take her own shower. But the feeling of several days on the road and the unfortunate lack of showers in the campsite outweighs just about everything else, though Deena tries to rush the process as much as she can.
Sam is sitting cross-legged on the bed, one elbow resting on her bare knee as she studies the map sheâs spread out in front of her. Sheâs taken far more interest in their progress than Deena, studying the topography with an intensity that Deena can only encourage, seeing as it often leaves Sam with a furrow between her brow, soft lips pursed in concentration. A twist of hair has slipped past her shoulder and Deena canât resist the urge to brush it back behind her shoulder, letting her hand fall between Samâs shoulder blades.
Even as Sam lifts her face toward Deenaâs, she whispers, âDeenaâŚwhat will Tom say?â
Deena kisses her, grinning. âHe could use a little more scandal in his life.â
Sam pushes the map aside, taking its place and pulling Deena down with her. She kisses her lazily, one leg absently hooked around Deenaâs thigh as she plays with her curls. âSoâŚwhat if sheâs right.â
âWho?â Sam definitely makes it hard to think straight, but even still Deena feels like sheâs missed something.
âThe lady downstairs,â Sam says, and Deena lifts an eyebrow. âI meanâŚwhat if this place really is haunted.â
Deena kisses the underside of Samâs jaw. âIâll protect you,â she assures her.
âNo, thatâs notâŚâ Sam laughs, breathy and light in a way that leaves heat pooling in Deenaâs stomach. âI meanâŚwhat if itâs like Shadyside? Another curse.â
Deena lifts her head, trying to read in Samâs face whether sheâs serious or not. âOâŚkay?â
Samâs fingers lazily trace the slopes of Deenaâs cheeks, her nose, her chin. âI mean what she said about the hospitalâŚall the ghostsâŚit could be. What if there was a way to help somehow?â
Grinning, Deena starts humming the theme song for The X-Files, leaning in to kiss Sam again. âOkay, Agent Fraser,â she intones seriously. âLetâs get right on that.â
Sam laughs even as she says, âIâm serious, Deena.â Gently, she pushes Deena back enough for the both of them to sit up and she brushes her wet hair over her shoulders and away from her face. âI mean, we did figure out what was going on in Shadyside,â she points out. âAnd we stopped that curse, which had been going on for three hundred years. This should be easy.â
Shaking her head, Deena exhales. âOkayâŚso you want us toâŚgo around to, what, haunted hotels and break all those curses?â She lifts an eyebrow.
Sam brightens. âI hadnât thought about that! We could go around the whole country and-â
âOkay, okay, slow down there Mulder,â Deena says, shaking her head. âAssuming thatâs likeâŚa real thing that is happening, like that there are other places out there like ShadysideâŚdo you remember how dangerous all of that was? Trying to stop Goode and all that shit? Because you died. Literally. Iâm not exactly keen on signing up to do that again.â
Sam sits across from her, their knees pressed together. âWe could help other people. Another Deena. Another Sam.â
âUm, no, thereâs no one else like you,â Deena assures her, making it sound enough like it could be a joke to ensure that she doesnât sound completely sappy and hopeless. âLet them figure it out. Iâm not trying to lose you again, okay?â
Sam smiles, putting her hands on Deenaâs shoulders, her thumb brushing against the curve of her neck. âYou wonât,â she says softly. âI guess we could put the ghost-hunting on hold until after college.â
âThatâs all I ask,â Deena says solemnly.
âArenât you even a little curious about Ezekiel?â
âUm, no,â Deena says, leaning forward to kiss her. âAll old, dead white people are the same.â
Sam laughs and pulls Deena toward her and it isnât until later, when Deena is flushed and heavy and half-asleep, that Sam retrieves the map from the floor and spreads it out half-across Deenaâs back and says, âHow many other haunted places like this do you think there are along the route?â that Deena realizes maybe she hasnât done the best job of distracting Sam from her dreams of becoming the newest Ghostbuster after all.

5 New Yearâs Resolutions That Can Help You Buy a Home
Thinking of buying a home this year? We compiled five New Yearâs resolutions that can help you keep your financial resume in tiptop shape.
1. Avoid job hopping
Employment history and income are two of the biggest factors lenders look at when evaluating a mortgage application. A new job may be a good career move, but if you plan to buy a home in the new year, know that job hopping can be a red flag to some underwriters â especially if youâre moving to a different industry.
A steady job history and few or no gaps in employment over the past two years are ideal, as it helps lenders more easily forecast your future income.
If you do get a new job while home shopping, let your lender know as soon as possible. It doesnât mean you wonât qualify for a mortgage â just be prepared to show extra documentation.
If youâre moving from a commissioned or hourly job to one thatâs salaried with equal or more compensation, it may help your application. Lenders often prefer borrowers to have steady, predictable paychecks.
2. Limit monthly subscription services
Monthly subscription services are certainly convenient, but they can add up. Even if you pay off your credit card every month, you could be dinged for high credit utilization if your credit report is pulled midcycle.
If youâre thinking of buying a home this year, consider keeping your monthly subscription services to a minimum.
3. Build a solid credit history
One of the first things a lender will look at is your credit history. Lenders prefer borrowers who have a history of paying off credits cards and other debts on time â because it signals that youâre a responsible borrower and less of a risk.
If you donât have credit, securing a home loan may be significantly more challenging and time-consuming, but not impossible. Records of paying rent and utilities on time, as well as student loan debt or cell phone bills, can help show a potential lender that you have a history of managing monthly payments.
4. Check your credit
Your credit score can have a significant impact on your ability to buy a home. A low credit score can negatively affect how much money a lender is willing to loan you, as well as your interest rate.
Just a few percentage point differences in an interest rate can cost you thousands over the life of a loan. Monitor your credit closely, especially for fraudulent activity, to prevent any surprises that could delay the loan application process.
If youâre unsure of your credit score, many financial websites offer credit score monitoring, or you can get a full credit report once a year.
5. Avoid large purchases
Avoid taking on large amounts of debt â whether itâs buying a car or planning a large vacation â before buying a house. This is advisable even if youâre already preapproved.
Your debt-to-income ratio, or how much money you make compared to how much debt you have, can significantly affect how much money a lender is willing to give you. Keeping debts to a minimum can help make the home-buying process go a lot more smoothly.
Just like proofreading your resume before you apply for a job, cleaning up your financial resume can help improve your chances of buying a home.

Sunnyvale, CA
Welcome, you belong here.
In this episode: FAQ is: How do I visit my family members in the military?Â
Todayâs Destination is: Sunnyvale, CA
Todayâs Mistake- Losing my airline rewards
Travel Advice:Â Join my clubhouse rooms for travel tips
FAQ: Nadia asked, How do I visit my family members in the military? My son is graduating from military training and I want to see him in Korea. Are there any discounts I can tap into for travel?
 Answer:Â
Depending on the training center location, and security screening you may be able to visit him. When you do visit, you may want to check out some of the military benefits and see if they apply to family members, such as shopping in the commisary or other attractions.Â
Itâs possible that you can ask the airlines for assistance in this, because they have likely had this question answered also. This question was from a recent clubhouse room. Iâll mention Clubhouse at the end of the podcast again.
Todayâs destination: Sunnyvale, California
Youâll find Sunnyvale in the Santa Clara Valley in northwest Santa Clara County, California. Itâs located along the famous Highway 101 and El Camino Real. San Jose borders to the north. Mountain View is Northwest and Los Altos is southwest. Cupertino is to the south. Santa Clara, home of the Mission and University was reviewed in episode 160 and is located to the east. The population is about 150,000, which is next to San Jose, the second most populous city in the county.Â
Itâs part of Silicon Valley. Itâs the birthplace of the video game industry, where Atari was founded.Â

https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/recreation-and-community/community-centers/senior-center
https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/recreation-and-community/parks-and-trails/baylands-park
https://heritageparkmuseum.org/
Here are a few suggestions for Sunnyvale.
Heritage Park Museum is open three days a week and does not charge admission.Â
There is also pottery and other activities at the local community center. The senior center may be of interest to you, so look in the show notes for these and other links.Â
Consider visiting Baylands Park for hiking or picnics.Â
Sunnyvale was known for having orchards and some still remain here. But most notably lately it is known as the home of several tech giants. The big industry here is the technology and information headquarters of many computer tech companies. Some of these large firms started here in garages and in high schools. Google, Apple, Facebook, now Meta and others have a presence here. Venture-capital seems to be flowing through the water. Sunnyvale is known for the home of many future technology projects.Â
In Mountain View, youâll find the Computer History Museum, open Wed-Sun.
https://computerhistory.org/
I visited Sunnyvale several times over the past 40 years living in California and most recently in January 2022 and stayed with my cousin, Jane Halligan. I flew into San Jose airport, rented a car and explored the area with several local residents to get insights to guide you to the best travel activities. Jane and I walked around an area that is reserved for seniors and community minded individuals and around what remains of the orchard groves.Â
Do - Visit the Community Center and Museum. Go hiking and visit the Senior Center.
Don't - Get stuck in traffic on the freeways if possible.Â
Todayâs Mistake - Losing my airline rewards
Iâve lost more airline points than Iâd like to admit. Itâs probably hundreds of thousands of miles that were not recovered over 50 years of traveling solo. Iâve had special status on several airlines that no longer exist and I never did follow up to find out where my points went. I assume they just disappeared. Now, my credit card gives me rewards that I can turn into cash, no matter what airline I travel on. I would like to keep my points on dozens of airlines that I fly, but it seems that to do so requires a lot of extra work that doesnât add up. My advice is to keep track of your rewards better than I do. You can make them work for you.

the following is a creative writing âessayâ i wrote as part of a class on psychogeography, about Stilwater. i think i linked to this briefly before but i got asked to post it so im posting it now.Â
But this Vision Remains Fragmentary
I came to Stilwater five years ago, mostly because I had nothing better to do and nowhere better to be. There were other options; San Andreas, or New Austin, or Los Santos, but I chose to come to Stilwater. On the edge of a lake, in the middle of Michigan, Stilwater is a tiny city that might have been nice forty, fifty years ago. The city has a huge factory district, so I guess it made its money off producing something at some point, but now theyâre all closed. Itâs a mystery how Stilwater makes any money at all. Most of the city just doesnât.
Stilwater has always been rife with crime, had a crime family decades old stuck in a war with their younger rivals, tearing the city apart for only yet another gang to slip in through the cracks and monopolise the bits of the city not yet claimed. The three gangs divided Stilwater up into factions and fought hellishly on the boundary lines. Anyone could get caught in the crossfire, and anyone did â the number one cause of death in Stilwater was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It didnât really matter where you were; the projects in Sunnyvale Gardens amongst the run-down apartment blocks, or the wealthy suburban houses in Tidal Spring, it was all open for invasion.
I came to Stilwater, but most importantly, I came to Saintâs Row. Saintâs Row is a small neighbourhood on the corner of Stilwater, surrounded on two sides by open water. Historically, it has been one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the city, wedged between the Red Light district and the factories and truck yards in Charles Town and Pilsen. It is the wrong place. Long past its prime, half full of empty buildings and half full of homes rotting with people still inside them, Saintâs Row was a desolate place to live. By far the most violent neighbourhood in Stilwater, abandoned to be a failure inside a city that was already suffering. Somehow Saintâs Row never fell under the banner of one gang or another; people fought there, but no one ever claimed it for themselves, the title of ownership rolling around between factions until someone finally decided theyâd had enough. It was a shithole, but as my friend Johnny said, it was a shithole with potential.
We were not the only ones who saw the potential inside Saintâs Row. Over five years they rebuilt the neighbourhood from the ground up, stripping out the decaying housing projects, remaking the landscape to form something useful to the people funding the rebuilding, something that the whole city could be proud of. Now it is a thriving centre of business and commerce, every skyscraper a shining beacon of success. The people who used to live in Saintâs Row are gone now, driven out by rising costs and the swift demolition of their homes. But thatâs a small price to pay to have a place to put Stilwaterâs brand new digital convention centre.
I never saw the rebuilding of Saintâs Row. I spent the transition confined to a hospital bed; left my home the way I had known it and returned to find the place wiped clean, as though the riverbanks had burst and drowned the old neighbourhood. Long ago, when an earthquake struck the Red Light district and caved in a part of the city, they built over it, the old buildings entombed deep below the ground like ancestorsâ graves. But the old Saintâs Row is not buried, it is gone, scoured from the face of the Earth.
It wasnât a safe place to live, a friendly place. Iâve said that well enough; it was dangerous, and it was decaying. Now itâs purified, scrubbed clean and perfect, a glass-coated vision of luxury without a soul and with no homes. I donât know if having nowhere to live is an improvement over having somewhere unsafe to live. The apartment buildings here are a little out of the price range of the usual tenant of the old Saintâs Row.
I can barely find the street my building used to sit on, let alone revisit my old home. The block where my apartment sat was demolished, and they built a skyscraper on it. Itâs a definitely a change from the squat three-floor building I used to rent a ground-floor apartment in.
It was a single room; bedroom, kitchen and living room in one. Hot and cold running gunfire at all hours of the day. It wasnât anyoneâs dream home, especially mine. It was a filthy mess in a block full of graffiti-coated shacks, and was barely able to keep warm in winter and keep out the sound of the street. It did have a garage though, which was a distinct advantage in a city where parking a car on the street is essentially asking for it to get stolen. And it had a beach view, if you stood on the roof, although the last thing youâd really want to do with Saintâs Rowâs own Mission Beach was look at it.
The skyscraper that stands there now is like every other new skyscraper in Saintâs Row, a fifty-story art-deco rectangle cluster, with a thousand shining blue windows that are excellent for catching the sun and shining it in your eyes. No matter where you try to hide in Saintâs Row, if the sun is out, there is going to be a skyscraper shining the light right back in your eyes, like a spotlight that detects poor people. There is a huge divide between the old and the new in Stilwater; places like Downtown are an inharmonious mixture of old traditional and the new flash, which is why they have tried to eradicate everything in Saintâs Row that risks breaking outside of their strict template.
The only thing that remains from the old Saintâs Row is the church, and thatâs still the greatest loss of them all. The church at the heart of Saintâs Row is white, like bleached bones picked clean by scavengers. The inside is gilded with gold and lined with oak floors, but it looks and feels like a rich manâs tomb. You can spend a million dollars to make a grave beautiful, but it still holds nothing but the dead. They call it the Saintâs Row Memorial Church now â it was just the Church before, it didnât need a name to hold reverence â and claim it is a testament to the cityâs tumultuous past.
When it was the place me and my friends haunted like violent ghosts, it was collapsing in on itself. The grey stone that the church was built out of was plastered in so many layers of graffiti that though it could have been white underneath, but you would never be able to tell. The pillars inside that held the second story were crumbling, the stairs to the upper floor torn out a long time ago. Most of the pews were gone too, only a few left, the wood black with rot. The graffiti that coated the walls was like a mural to the history of the neighbourhood, every gang and gangster that rolled through in the last forty years had made their mark on it. It was alive, with the people inside and with our love for the place. People died to protect that church. I fought tooth and nail to keep it ours. It was a crumbling ruin, but we were proud of it.
The memorialisation feels like mockery. What are they trying to memorialise? What has been lost is not theirs to mourn. The church was ours and they took it from us, and they have the gall to say that they lost something in the years that we were the ones occupying it. It was our right! To take what we had and defend our neighbourhood, that was our right. No one else was trying to look after the place, the police and the city officials had long since given up on the Row.
The Church sits now in the shadow of the Phillips Building, a goliath of a black and orange skyscraper that dominates the Stilwater skyline. The Phillips Building is the Ultor headquarters, and they want to make sure you can always see them. They funded the rebuilding of the Row, and they want to make everyone know it. The road leading up to the Church is four lanes wide and lined on either side with flags showing off the Stilwater city crest alongside the Ultor company logo, as if the two are halves of the same coin. Ultor billboards are all over the neighbourhood, branding their mark into every inch of the place so you can never dare to forget it. A BRIGHTER FUTURE AND A BETTER LIFE, their slogan claims. The future theyâve built is definitely brighter â itâs so dazzlingly bright that Iâm blinded. Or maybe thatâs just from the rage.
The Church was sacrosanct not because it was holy; it was an ordinary building, we the children played in it, we can hardly claim the refurbishment was an act of iconoclasm. It was precious because of what it meant to us. I wonder sometimes what happened to the bodies in the graveyard. Were they moved, to the bigger graveyard in the north of the city, next to the rich peopleâs suburban mansions? Or were they just paved over, buried under layers of concrete and tarmac, like the underground buildings in the Red Light district? It feels more egregious than the other crimes, even if we had little respect for the graveyard ourselves. People used to have fights out there, in ritualistic bonding activities, and half the gravestones were broken from our own bullets.
I say âpeopleâ like I wasnât one of them, and Johnny didnât once nearly kick my teeth in out there amongst the tombstones. That kind of thing just felt natural in Saintâs Row. It probably doesnât make sense to outsiders. It doesnât make sense now they overthrew the neighbourhood and made it into something hollow, and empty. I couldnât imagine behaving that way in the courtyard of the Memorial Church, our behaviour turned into something unwanted and vile, a blight on their glass paradise.
The change in Stilwater was less natural progression and more a like a sudden neon-clad viral infestation, eating through the bones of the city and making it flourish into hideous impractical new growths. You can stand on the river opposite Saintâs Row, on the pier in Downtown, and it very nearly looks pretty at night. When itâs too dark to make out the buildings themselves, all you can see is the sweeping orange spotlights around the leviathan Phillips Building, the way the millions of glass windows reflect in the river, and it looks nice. Certainly, better than itâs ever looked in the past. In the light of day, the old city looks grimy and unpleasant, the ugly practicality of the old architecture awful in contrast to Ultorâs garish new renovations. Iâd say you can understand why someone would want to remodel the rest of Stilwater, but Iâd be caught dead before I was seen sympathising with Ultor.
Saintâs Row is pretty from the outside, from the faraway side of the river, but itâs worthless within. Thereâs nothing worth reclaiming, and even if we called it ours, it never would be again. Beauty, when it does not hold the promise of happiness, has no right to exist, but we canât tear down the billboards, the skyscrapers, the Phillips Building and find what we used to own beneath the shell. The Saintâs Row we called home is gone. Five years ago, we started in the Row and grew outwards. It was a struggle, but it was a war we were willing to wage. Now we are forever outside Saintâs Row looking in. It is a white void of land that is untouched and untouchable by the likes of us.

Israel Keyes (1978-2012)
Israel Keyes was an American serial killer, rapist, burglar, arsonist and bank robber who admitted to violent crimes spanning from as far back as 1996, with the vicious sexual assault of a teenage girl in Oregon. Keyes committed a series of brutal rapes and murders until he was captured in 2012 â he was being held in custody, awaiting trial for Samantha Koenigâs murder, when he committed suicide in prison. He was born in Richmond, Utah, on January 7, 1978. Keyes was raised in a Mormon family and was homeschooled. The family move to Aladdin Road, north of Colville, Washington, and became friends with the family of Chevie Kehoe, a white supremacist and convicted murderer. The family attended a Christian Identity church before moving to Sunnyvale, California, spending time on the east coast after Israelâs father died. Keyes served in the US Army between 1998 and 2001 at Fort Lewis, Fort Hood and Egypt. According to Keyesâ military records, he entered the Army in Albany, NY on July 9, 1998 and was discharged from Fort Lewis, Washington on July 8, 2001 at the rank of E-4. The same records indicated that Keyes was given the following awards: Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar, Expert Infantryman Badge and Air Assault Badge. Keyes started a construction business in 2007 in Alaska, Keyes Construction, working as a handyman, contractor and construction worker.
The first victims of Israel Keyes were located in Washington state in the late 1990s â Keyes told investigators that he killed 4 people in Washington State, claims which the FBI are still looking into, as well as state police. Keyes lived in several places in Washington state between the late 1990s until around 2008. As a US Army Specialist he was stationed at Fort Lewis between 1998 and 2001, and also lived in the small city of Colville in Eastern Washington and in the Makah Reservation community of Neah Bay on the Olympic Peninsula. Keyes didnât have a felony criminal record in Washington but had been cited in Thurston County (near Olympia) for driving without a valid licence and in an earlier incident pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. Authorities are currently reviewing unsolved murder and missing person cases to determine which cases, if any, are linked to Keyes. He confessed to a murder in New York but authorities havenât been able to determine the age, identity, or sex of the victim, let alone when or where the murder occurred, but still believed the confession was accurate. Keyes did have ties to New York, owning 10 acres of land and a run-down cabin in Constable. He also confessed to committing bank robberies in New York and Texas â the FBI later confirmed that he robbed the Community Bank in Tupper Lake, New York, in April 2009. He threatened people with a handgun, but there were no injuries. Keyes later told authorities he had also burglarised a Texas home and set it on fire. In the same period as the Community Bank robbery Keyes claims to have killed a woman in New Jersey and buried her in the area. Keyes was linked to the murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier in Essex, Vermont, breaking into their home on the night of June 8 and tying them up, sexually assaulting them and strangling Lorraine. The bodies have never been discovered. 2 years earlier, Keyes hid a âmurder kitâ near the Currierâs home, which contained a handgun and various other supplies. Following the murders he moved most of these items to a new hiding place in Parishville, New York, where they stayed until his arrest.
The last known murder Keyes committed was that of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, a barista from Anchorage, Alaska. Keyes kidnapped her from work on February 1, 2012. He stole her debit card and other personal possessions before murdering her on February 2. Police said that Keyes sexually assaulted Koenig before killing her. After her death, Keyes left on a cruise out of New Orleans, leaving her body in a shed. When he returned from the cruise, Keyes revisited the body, taking a photograph of the corpse with a 4-day-old issue of the Anchorage Daily News in an attempt to make it seem that she was still alive so he could demand a ransom. After asking for $30,000 in ransom money, Keyes dismembered Koenigâs body and disposed of it in Matanuska Lake, north of Anchorage. A report by the FBI stated that Keyes burglarised at 20-30 homes across the United States, also robbing several banks between 2001 and 2012 to fund his hobby of murder. Keyes may be linked to as many as 11 deaths in the U.S. as well as even more outside the country. After the murder of Samantha Koenig and the payment of his $30,000 ransom demand, police were able to track withdrawals Keyes made from the account as he moved through the southwestern United States. During this time, controversially, the police refused to release surveillance video of Koenigâs abduction. Keyes was arrested by the Texas Highway Patrol in the parking lot of the Cotton Patch Cafe in Lufkin, Texas, on March 13, 2012, after using Koenigâs debit card which had also been used in New Mexico and Arizona. Keyes was extradited to Alaska where he confessed to the murder â he was represented by Alaska federal defender Rich Curtner. He was indicted in the case and his trial was scheduled to begin in March 2013, a year after his arrest.
Keyes was known to plan his murders ahead of time and took evasive action to avoid detection. Unlike many serial killers he didnât have a particular victim profile, usually killing far from home and never in the same place twice. On his murder sprees, Keyes would keep his mobile phone turned off and paid for items with cash. He had no connections to his victims. In the Currier murders, he flew to Chicago and then rented a car to drive 1000 miles to Vermont, using the murder kit he had hidden then 2 years earlier to perform the killings. Keyes admired serial killer Ted Bundy and had several similarities with him â both were methodical and felt like they possessed their victims, but there are noticeable differences, namely that Bundyâs murders were spread throughout the country because he lived in many different places, not because he was trying to avoid detection, like Keyes. Bundy only targeted attractive young women with long, dark hair parted in the middle, while Keyes had no particular victim type. While he was being held in jail at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on suspicion of murder, Israel Keyes committed suicide on December 2, 2012, via self-inflicted cuts to the wrists and strangulation. He was survived by a school-age daughter. A suicide note discovered underneath his body consisted of an âode to murderâ but didnât share any clues about potential other victims.

How Does Compound Interest Work? (Investments, Savings, and More!) https://ift.tt/35uMnzo
When it comes to investing, time is your friend. Why? Because over time, your investments will tend to grow at compounding rates. That means the money that your money has already earned makes more money.
This is why Albert Einstein famously said, "Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it. He who doesnât, pays it."
Hereâs what you need to know about compounding and how it affects your investments.
Quick Navigation
What Is Compounding?
Compounding Interest vs. Compounding Growth
Compounding Rates of Return on Various Investments
Inflation â When Compounding Works Against You
The Sooner You Start Investing, the Faster Compounding Can Work in Your Favor!
What Is Compounding?
One of the most common pieces of financial advice is to invest $50,000 of your money in the stock market each year, and to not look at your balance for 40 years. On the dawn of your retirement, youâll open up your portfolio with hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars to your name!
How do you have so much money? The answer is compounding which is sometimes called compounding growth or compounding interest.
Compound growth is the concept where the initial investment grows (either through dividends, interest, or capital gains) each year. Then, provided that you donât spend the growth, the next year, the earnings and the initial investment grow.
Even if the rate of return stays the same (say 5% each year), the total value of the investment goes up at a faster and faster clip each year.
Because humans tend to think linearly, it is very difficult (maybe even impossible) for us to truly grasp the concept of compound growth.
In the chart below, you can see the difference between a linear and a compound growth rate. In both examples, the initial portfolio had a value of $50,000. Both had a growth rate of 8%. However, the portfolio where growth compounded had a value over $1 million dollars after 40 years. The portfolio that experienced linear growth was just a hair over $200,000 after 40 years.
Many investments have historically shown returns that match compound growth patterns over a long period of time.
Want to see some really powerful compounding? Try this exercise: How much money do you think you would have if you doubled a penny every day for one month?
The answer is $10.7 million dollars. The higher your rate of return (in this case, daily doubling), the faster compounding starts to take effect.
Of course, finding investments that double daily is impossible, but the example also speaks to the importance of time.
Compounding Interest vs. Compounding Growth
When youâre talking about money growing on its own, youâll almost always hear the word compounding. But you may hear it called compounding interest or compounding growth. Are they different, and does the difference matter?
Technically, compounding interest is where a principal investment and interest earned from the investment compound over time. For example, a certificate of deposit (CD), a bond, or a high-yield savings account earns interest. If you continue to reinvest the interest that you earn into the same investment, youâll earn compounding interest.
Compound interest frequently works against people. For example, the interest on a debt compounds over time. If you arenât making any payments on a loan, the interest that youâre not paying is added to the principal, and you must pay interest on the interest owed. When youâre not making payments on your student loans, the interest is compounding.
Compound growth is where the principal investment plus capital gains (such as rising stock or real estate prices) and dividends, rents, or interest compound over time. Since most investments donât earn interest, the most accurate terminology is compounding growth.
That said, compounding interest is a colloquial phrase in the world of investing. If you talk about compounding interest in real estate, everyone will understand what youâre saying.
Compounding Rates of Return on Various Investments
When it comes to calculating the compound annual rate of return (or the compound growth rate), you can use a very simple formula.
EB is the current (or ending) balance of a portfolio and BB is the initial (or beginning) balance of the portfolio.
The number of years that a portfolio has been invested is n.
Using this formula, we can calculate all kinds of growth rates for investments. The following are examples.
The Stock Market (S&P 500)
Current value (January 2019): 102
Beginning value (January 1969): 2607.39
Number of years: 50
CAGR = 6.7%
Over the past 50 years (as of the start of 2019), the stock market has returned a tremendous 6.7% compounding return. Of course, if you select a different time period than the one I selected, the return could be much better or much worse.
Itâs worth noting that this actually understates the true compounding growth rate of the stock market since it doesnât include dividend reinvestment.
The U.S. Real Estate Market (Single Family Homes)
Some people want to compare their investments in the stock market with the value in their homes. This calculation will show you the growth of median home prices over 40 years.
Current value (Q1 2019): 313,000
Beginning value (Q1 1969): 25,700
Number of years: 50
CAGR = 5.1%
Median home prices have gone up at a rate of 5.1% over the past 40 years.
What if you bought a home in Sunnyvale, California instead of somewhere in Middle America?
Current value (Q1 2019): 450.87
Beginning value (Q1 1976): 19.76
Number of years: 43
CAGR = 7.5%
While average home prices grew slower than the stock market, home prices in Sunnyvale actually outpaced it. I threw this example in to show that it can be tough to say whether you should invest in one investment or another. Knowing the average compound growth rate isnât always helpful.
Inflation â When Compounding Works Against You
Of course, compounding doesnât always work in your favor. When you have debt, the interest on the debt compounds.
If youâve ever checked out a loan amortization schedule, youâll notice that most of your early payments go toward interest, and very little goes toward the principal balance. Thatâs because you pay interest on the entire amount of loan thatâs outstanding. The only way to cut back on interest you pay is to either pay extra towards principal or to lower your interest rate (or do both).
Even if you donât have debt, compounding works against you through inflation.
One good measure of inflation is called the Consumer Price Index. This compares the cost of a âbasket of goods and servicesâ such as houses, cars, utilities, groceries, etc. over time. The growth rate in CPI is the inflation rate. It is the amount that inflation is working against you.
Current value (January 2019): 252.67
Beginning value (January 1969): 35.7
Number of years: 50
CAGR = 3.99%
Over the past 50 years, inflation has eroded wealth by 3.99% per year. I should mention that inflation has tended to be much closer to 0% to 2% over the past few years â the CAGR calculated here may overstate the reality. Nonetheless, it is important to note that your investments need to earn somewhere between 2% and 4% per year just to match inflation.
The Sooner You Start Investing, the Faster Compounding Can Work in Your Favor!
If you havenât started an investment account, itâs time to get started.
Think about opening a Roth IRA (better yet, get the company match for your 401(k)). Invest the money, and keep your hands off of it. 40 years from now (or even less if youâre a super-saver), that sweet, sweet compounding will be spinning off enough money for you to live off of your investments.
