Looking for Hanbok Resources
Hi Tumblr! I'm a clueless white girl who is looking for reputable and accurate clothing resources for hanbok, specifically Joseon-era men's hanbok - from the gat to the shoes. Although I've done some Googling, I'm having trouble finding anything like a clothing encyclopedia that names the different garments and shows their structure.
Tumblr media
A resource that has illustrations like this jeogori drawing (sourced from TheKoreanInMe) but for all the different garments would be really helpful!
I mainly want to broaden my knowledge, as I recently rewatched an old Kdrama I fell in love with in college (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) and realized my base understanding of hanbok was very poor. I'd also like to make a doll of my blorbo (it's Gu Yong-ha!), and I want to be as accurate as I can in the medium of crochet. Like a nerd.
Tumblr media
Like... how is the manggeon fastened and does it overlap in the back? What kind of outer jacket is the gold garment (I know there are different sleeve lengths, from sleeveless to full sleeves) and is the purple garment the jeogori here? When is it acceptable for the undergarments/undershirt to be visible (if ever)? What about different belts? They do spend a lot of time dressing and undressing in this drama, so maybe I should watch it again lol
I know that drama clothing is not always entirely historically accurate, but I hate not knowing things! Any resources would help, but English-language labeling is a huge plus. If you have book or pattern recommendations, I will definitely take them, even if they are not online free.

Watching a Korean TV show, and it's funny to me how the exact word translation doesn't really express the full idea.
너 미처써? means "Are you crazy?" but like, not exactly. Thems fighting words.
Not for the first time I think we need more punctuation marks that actually express feelings like sarcasm, disrespect, etc.

I think I have perhaps watched all of Song Joong Ki's dramas and I have yet to find one where he's not atleast obscurely referenced as good looking or something to that effect. Not one.

Moon Jae Shin from Sungkyunkwan Scandal.
Definitely a painting of a blorbo, and not several studies in disguise.

My favorite thing about historical kdramas is knowing I can safely watch it without getting the sudden whiplash of awkward product placement. Won’t catch the left prime minister sipping on instant coffee.

Would love to hear people’s reason in the notes!
(I’ve put Eunseom and Saya separate but Hyunwoo and Dojun together cos the later two are technically supposed to be the same person? Even though it’s not clear)

Where are all my sungkyunkwan scandal freaks. What do you mean I rewatch that show every year and cry over the characters constantly but have no one to share in my joy and sorrows? How have I spent more than half a decade in love with moon jaeshin and no one cares or knows?

DUDE
character arcs are questions
Back in 2010, a kdrama historical-fusion hit called Sungkyunkwan Scandal asked a very simple question: can an intelligent, ambitious, self-educated woman have a place in a male-dominated Neo-Confucianist society?
While the story is a common trope – a girl dresses as a boy to attend a male-only school – that larger question drives the story. Bit by bit, the stakes get higher, her secret gets harder to keep, and the danger gets greater. The other three in the quartet have similar, echoing questions. Twenty episodes later, the series answered the question.
And the answer was: no.
You cannot love learning, use your brilliant mind, and be female. There isn’t a place for an educated woman in the public sphere of a Neo-Confucian society – except by continuing to pretend you’re a man.
Yuuri on Ice was another with a question-based arc: can a talented athlete overcome his severe anxiety and find the inner strength to finally win gold? Twelve episodes later, Yuuri’s arc gets its conclusion to his driving question.
The answer was: no.
You can give it the old college try, but it won’t be enough. All the blood, sweat, and tears will only get you second place. There will be no triumph, here.
Both of these, if it’s not clear, were supremely dissatisfying.
I’m not saying you can’t answer a character arc with a no. We call that a tragedy, and done right, it can be as cathartic as a yes. In a tragedy, the character’s progression is such that when the end arrives – the final no – it feels inevitable. In a story of triumph, a character rises despite every setback, such that the final yes should also feel inevitable. That’s ‘earning’ the victory (or defeat). That sense of inevitability lies in how the conclusion reached fits the character’s actions.
And that brings me to Voltron: Legendary Defender, and its questions. Of the various characters – and keeping in mind this is not a tragedy, at least on the face of it, so far – five characters have pretty sharp questions.
Pidge’s asks: can a genius hacker cross the universe to find/rescue her missing family. Allura’s asks: can a princess lead a ragtag five-person team to defeat the universe’s greatest tyrant. Pidge has been given her answer. Allura is on the way to getting hers. Keith’s question was something like whether his loyalties were still valid, as a mixed-race orphan; after some waffling, he seems on-track for a yes, as well. Hunk and Lance don’t really have questions.
And then there’s Shiro’s question.
Tumblr media
VLD took 41 episodes to get there, but S7 finally brought this arc to a close, and answered the question.
And the answer was no.

Let's go! Others include Battleship Island, Obs & Gynae (I still didn't manage to learn the name lol), Penny Pinchers, Deep Rooted Tree, Will it snow for Christmas and Triple.
I might be missing some, I'm not sure.
THIS IS A VERY VERY IMPORTANT POLL FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES. WE ARE SPREADING SJK LOVE HERE.

Moon Jae Shin from Sungkyankwan Scandal is dangerously blorbo. He's a layabout who cares about nothing-- except actually he's very honourable and moral and is running around being a political activist in disguise. He keeps getting shot and having to hide it. He kidnaps people to give them first aid, because he is allergic to sincerity.
And also, he is allergic to women, and while I'm in theory annoyed by that trope, this is a very charming presentation of it.

Why am I just watching this and why am I discovering that my type is socially awkward mysterious badass assassins with ponytails, fancy bangs, and all black fits?
Kwak Dong Yeon please be a lead in a period drama with lots of martial arts and sword fighting and romance. And a happy ending.
