R.I.P. Deep Rivers Society guy.

Fun NTWEWY fact: Just as how the Purehearts and Variabeauties had Sumio and Maito respectively as direct assistants for their team leaders, the Deep Rivers Society also had a right hand man for Fuya but he isn't named.

On W1D5 at the end of the scramble slam, these three specifically show up to face down the Wicked Twisters. We learn later that the top two are the second-in-command guys for the Purehearts and Variabeauties, and although the guy at the bottom never gets properly named or introduced like Sumio or Maito, we can get from context that he probably fills the same role for the DRS.

This is further supported by how in just the day prior when the Wicked Twisters kick DRS's ass and Fuya has a breakdown, it's that guy specifically who shows up to report to Fuya and try to give him some consolation.

Anyways I'm mad this guy never gets a name and that he's not a part of the Social Network as a result LOL. Sumio and Maito are underrated enough as it is but shout out to this unnamed guy with exactly 2 scenes

I went back to the unspoken hero of this game, Sumio, and tried his sidequest with Motoi, choosing the “quote” option. Have to wonder how Motoi felt, getting a taste of his own medicine. And remember, the context is Motoi suggesting something of a co-operative effort with the other teams (two days before he planned to sell his own team out and jump ship, the scumbag) in the group chat. The relevance of that quote to that context must be as lost on Motoi as it is on me. Unlike when I last chose something, Motoi doesn’t respond immediately, implying he’s still scratching his head at it.

It’s also an interesting choice because it’s Rindo at his most regressive. He’ll later go on to say that he used to just parrot An0ther quotes without thinking but that he’s grown to really consider things in a way that he didn’t used to thanks to his experiences. He’s also not long off finding out that his idol and the source of these quotes is a fraud, but here he is imitating him and considering his only issue here to be the lack of An0ther quotes that he can remember. This choice shows Rindo at his weakest point, character development-wise.

I have to wonder if Rindo ever does go on to review An0ther quotes after everything. He’ll have a lot to rethink once the Reaper’s game is done, no doubt.

And of course, outside of everything else, this choice gives us Nagi and Beat being incredibly savage in their own respective ways. “Truly devastating words coming from one such as yourself” - Nagi’s out her to murder everyone!

This choice was killer because I wanted to see every option here and play it out. But if I have to choose one, I need to know what Rindo’s form of imitation takes, so I went for being An0ther-y! I look forward to seeing what other messages lead to. A close second was Beat’s total honesty approach.

Of flipping course he found a way to use the word keikaku. It’s so meme-y at this point that the word alone just makes me giggle. At the very least, Sumio’s very satisfied, which honestly makes me pretty happy.

Also, bold trust from Sumio to just give Rindo the reins and let him send the message without verifying it. I’m guessing that’ll result in different reactions in the other choices.

Maito’s no Sumio, but he’s so flipping extra all the time. He’s even still pushing that playground “Icky Twisters” nickname.

Speak of the devil, RIP Sumio. Met you once and I miss you every day.

I have to wonder why he was pestering Maito so much, right up until the day he was erased, apparently. I’m guessing he was just one of those people who has a lot to say to their contacts. I can get set off by rapid-fire notifications, so that would bug me too.

Still, little dark to think that Maito was blanking Sumio even as he was perhaps desperately texting Maito the last words he would ever say. Poor guy.

I flipping love that the moment Rindo mentions getting a message from Motoi, Nagi and Beat get raging. They haven’t forgotten yesterday’s events and they’re clearly holding a very strong grudge, likely largely on Rindo’s behalf. Such a SQUAD!

Rindo’s even narrowing his eyes at the message. And Fret’s response is a bit more ambiguous, but certainly not outright positive. It’s nice that Fret’s still able to show some interest in him even after everything. I say it a lot but he’s a good dude.

Man, the reactions of the party to these messages are pretty gold. They say it all about their feelings to these messages, from the bitterness at the apology to the bewilderment at Motoi’s hack poetry. Honestly, Motoi didn’t even try with this one!

Again, Motoi’s just being straight with us and not mixing up his languages, which is honestly a good move on his part. It makes the apology feel more genuine, which I hope it is, but I doubt deception will really benefit him at this point anyway. Unless he’s made a deal with the Ruinbringers or something, haha...

Haha...

...He wouldn’t do that right? Who am I kidding he totally would. He better not have!

I’m gonna assume all is honest here just for my own sanity. Honestly, either way, it’s good that he apologised and assuming there are no deceptions here, I kind of respect his intentions to take on the Ruinbringers in a last stand. At the very least, it gives his team more of a fighting chance.

Honestly, that’s a point. Motoi was planning to become a Reaper, begged for the position and let his team fall into last place to push that plan forward. He was totally going to abandon his team while they were losing and watch them get erased the next day from the Reaper’s corner! He says “by myself” right here! I keep feeling less sorry for him right as I’m starting to gain sympathy. What a slimebag.

Hah! Classic comedy.

We get to meet Sumio, Motoi’s second, and help him out with the incredibly simple yet complicated task of texting back Motoi in the group chat. Motoi’s obviously quite an eccentric guy and this situation is quite specific, but it’s one of the most relatable struggles our heroes have encountered. Not unlike Rindo working up the courage to text Swallow and ask about the Reaper’s Game. I love that these everyday social challenges that are so commonly caused by our own innate need to ‘fit in’ or be as polite as possible get some airtime in moments like these, in such a comedic way. You don’t see enough of that.

But also, Motoi has taken a liking to us. That’s interesting. Could just be because Rindo is a fan, or maybe just because we’re a powerful new team on the block. Or maybe he sees something in us. I dunno. Motoi is a bit of a mystery, but I like him. Much like Kanon, I want to trust him, but I’ve been burned before.

So let’s see what message we’re up against.

Pfft! Okay, that’s amazing! Between that and Fret earlier starting to explain how to text to Sumio, I continue to love the comedy in this game.

Sumio, we just met you, but you have climbed the ranks and become one of my favourite minor characters with this conversation alone. I feel for you, dude!
