A Saint Sent From Above. Chapter 1.
Bendy grumbled as he stared down at the letter that he held in one hand, a look of irritation on his face; another rejection notice from the bank. He dropped it down onto his desk that was covered in papers and files, his gloved hands covering his eyes and clenching slightly. “Damnit..” He was so close, but now everything was crumbling around him. Lifting his head slightly, he looked towards a framed picture that rested on his desk. Within it was a photograph of his father and himself when he was still a tiny toon. “Ugh…I wish you were here…this would be goin’ much fuckin’ smoother.”
Ever since he had taken over the Studio from his father Joey, it had been touch and go as far as keeping everything together. There had been enough money left over to keep the landlords off their back for a few months, and Bendy had decided that the studio needed to move. It had actually been Don’s idea…Henry’s niece. Her picture was next to the one of his father and he regarded it hopefully as if it could give him strength. “Don’ worry Donny baby…I’mma figure this out..I promise.” He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as if trying to convince himself of his words.
Though toons and humans did live together, they were at odds with one another. Bendy and Joey wanted their studio to become a place where Toons and Humans could work together to create joy in the world. The best way to do that would be to move the studio to a new venue, one on the outskirts of Toon Town. Even though the rent on the building was well within their budgets if they got a modest loan…the problem was getting one. Bendy glared down at the paper once more before he slammed his hand over it and clenched it tight, crumpling it up and throwing it off his desk, his teeth grit in irritation. He stood up and grabbed his blazer from the coat hook and slipped it on, grabbing his hat as well and slipping it over his horns. He needed a drink.
There had been talk around Toon Town about a strange new bar that had come out. The Inkwell. It was built right on the wall that separated the two worlds and was known as the only place in the town that humans and toons would come together for drinks, dancing and….other things if the price was right. He huffed as he made his way towards said outskirts, keeping an eye on his surroundings as this could sometimes be a bit dangerous. Soon enough, neon pink lit up his vision, a beautiful sign above him that spelled out “The Inkwell”. Bendy entered after the bouncer let him through and handed his coat and hat off to one of the young female humans. She giggled at him charmingly when he gave her a wink and a “Thanks Dollface” as he made his way towards the bar. It was a strange place he noted, Toon and human designs and items melded together in some sort of strange harmonious design.
Jake looked up from his glasses and smiled as the demon pressed up to the bar. Bendy gave half a glance to the young human woman who was seated next to him. She was clothed in a sapphire blue dress with a rather scandalous neckline and a slit up one side to show off her leg and the elegant shoes she wore. Her black hair was piled up onto her head, held in place with shining combs as she took a slow drag of the fragrant cigar, sighing the smoke politely overhead while her thumb rubbed along the edge of a rocks glass she cradled in her hand. She returned his sideways glance, brown eyes warm and a bit interested. “What’ll ya have stranger?” Jake asked, pulling Bendy out of his thoughts and he glanced to the wolf then. “Gimme a Blue Angel..make it a good one.” He muttered. “After th’ fuckin’ day I’ve had I need it..” He groused, undoing his tie slightly as he settled in. Jake nodded and smiled happily. “Sure thing! One Blue Angel comin’ up~” The young wolf pulled two bottles from an icebox, pulling up a large brandy snifter as he did so. He poured equal parts bright cerulean ink and vodka into a toon make mixer and gave it a vigorous shaking before he poured it out and slid it over.
“Thanks pal..” The devil muttered before he grabbed the glass and knocked it back –immediately- regretting his life choice. The drink was delicious but it was very very strong…the ink in it unlike anything he’d ever had and he choked slightly, thumping a fist at his chest to get it down so he could breathe. A gentle hand pat his back to help and he glanced over with a wince…it was the human woman. “Easy there fella…the inks here are the best in the biz, no dilute here…so they pack a bit of bite.” She glanced to the tender with a smile. “Get him a regular darling…he’ll need it.” Jake nodded and quickly poured a shot of pigment free ink, which to toons was the equivalent of just water, sliding it over to her. “Here sweetheart…drink up. It’ll help it go down.” She said. Bendy didn’t hesitate, swiping the glass and taking cautious sips…sure enough it calmed his lungs and he smothered another cough, shaking his head with a comical noise. The young woman giggled softly and gave him a sympathetic look as she ashed her cigar. “Well your day had to be bad darlin’ if you had to take it that fast…what’s on your mind hm?” She asked softly, giving a tilt of her head. Normally…Bendy would keep it to himself..but the warm ink booze in his stomach had him loosening his sleeves as well as his lips. “Tch…M’in charge of Joey Drew studios..have been since my pop died. M’tryin’ ta move the place t’wards the outskirts..that way…we ken help Toons get jobs..where they won’t be exploited ya know? What better studio for a Toon ta work at than one run by one eh?” He said with a grin, rather pleased with himself as he slipped a thumb under his suspenders. “Ohh~ That sounds like a lovely idea..” She remarked.
Bendy nodded emphatically “Heh..yeah it was all Bella’s idea..” He said a somewhat charmed grin on his face. “Oooh~ I see….But?” She asked, giving a tilt of her head as she pulled another puff from her cigar, watching as Bendy frowned in frustration. “I’m having a feeling things aren’t going to plan?” “Not at all. Th’ fuckin’ banks keep turnin’ me down even though we got good numbers..we got th’ credit…s’cuz I’m a goddamn Toon!” He snarled, tapping the bar for another shot, thumbing at the toon bottle of bourbon nearby. As Jake poured him the shot, he settled the heels of his palms against his forehead with a growl. “I can’t…make this work…I dunno how…” He admitted, his voice low, defeated, and angry about it. When the shot was slid to him, he sipped at it a moment, glowering at the bar top.
“Hmm…well…you could ask me~” And this was Bendy choking on his second shot. “H-huh?” He sputtered, looking to her with an incredulous look that made her laugh merrily. “I said…you could just ask me darling.” She snubbed out her cigar and smiled at him. “I am Madam Rosa…and this is my establishment..” Rosa gestured about her and gave him a gentle look. “And I…want to help you out.” Bendy eyed her suspiciously then, a small frown on his face as he took another slow sip of his glass. “What’s the catch?” He questioned warily and Rosa merely giggled. “There’s not catch dear…trust me..I had to fight for this establishment..I had to claw and bite and squirm my way to the top from nothing to get here so…I know how it is to have the world against you.” She explained. Bendy paused, finally getting a good look at her and then he understood. She was Native…which to humans was almost less than the animals they took care of. Rosa smiled slightly. “And since you’re the head of the Drew Studios…I presume you’re the Big Boss I keep hearing about in whispers hm?” She teased, smirking slightly at him. Bendy chuckled and smirked right back, leaning a bit closer to her. “That’s me toots…Big Boss Bendy they call me..” He all but crowed in pride. Rosa giggled and tilted her head sweetly. “Well aren’t you a charmer…your girl is very lucky to have you~”
“But…did ya mean that? Like…how th’ hell would ya help anyway?” Bendy asked, scooting the now empty glass away from himself across the bartop. Rosa hummed lightly, as if she’d been asked the easiest question in the world. “Simple…I’ll go to the bank and buy the lease for the building you want…any one you want…then…you simply pay them through me and the shmucks will be none the wiser.” She said with a wink. Bendy blinked and stared at her before he broke out in a laugh and a mischievous grin spread over his face. “Ha! Stickin’ it to th’ establishment…I like it!” He all but cackled. Rosa smiled back and winked. “So do we have a deal honey?” She asked, holding out a dainty hand. Bendy laughed and took her hand, giving it a firm shake..and was rather surprised when he got one back. “We gotta deal Rosa darlin’..” She gave a small delighted laugh and pulled back from the handshake with a smile. “Wonderful! Come by tomorrow darling…I’ll have my lawyer draw up all the paperwork and we can have it signed and notarized…and by month’s end…you’ll have your new studio~” She chirped happily. Bendy was grinning so hard it hurt…who would have thunk that for once…going to get a drink would actually SOLVE his problems for him?
Wait until his SugarBell heard about this!
