Eurovision 2004: The Interval Act and Other Performances
Two shows, two intervals! It's the first bit of new programming needed for this year's Eurovision. You can do the same postcards in both contests. The scoring sorts itself out, but what are you doing to do about the musical bits? You need something different for each show.
Starting with the semi-final and one of the weirdest interval acts there's ever been - and also one of the hardest to see today in context. A six-minute long comedy film featuring ABBA as puppets made by the Jim Henson workshop. It features the band auditioning in 1974 for a record company executive played by Rik Mayall.
Having this in the middle of what is a thoroughly Turkish show featuring traditional drumming is a bit odd to say the least. 2004 was the 30th anniversary of ABBAs win and since their fractious split in the 1980s, their popularity and pull was only increasing. The demand for appearances, reformations and shows was getting louder all the time - so how to achieve this when they were no wanting to appear publicly? Why not puppets?
The entire short was called ABBA - Our Last Video Ever, a title that carried with it the air of something celebratory, momentous, and definitively final. Something that had been wanted for more than a decade and was here. The reality didn't meet those expectations, it being more of a comedy sketch and with very little actually in the way of the members of ABBA.
If you bought or saw the full semi-final after the night it was show, the ABBA short wasn't there - you had to buy it separately, and for a while was exceedingly hard to find.
The Grand Final stuck more to tradition with lines of dancers, instrumentalists and drummers. All aspects of Turkish musical culture were covered in a presentation by the group Fire of Anatolia, a huge dance ensemble. The scale and tradition of it did harken back to Riverdance in terms of ambition, although the result didn't have the same impact.
The one other musical number was Sertab Erener opening the show with a reprise of her winning song Everyway that I Can as well as another of her songs Leave. The first song had the same choreography as her win, but with male dancers and Sertab herself was fully dressed in gold. For the second half of the show, a group of Sufi sama dancers spinning and whirling around her.
There was a mid-run break in the grand final - but this served as an attempt to go around watch parties being held in Europe, although the link-up mostly failed leaving the hosts to fill while adverts aired on TV.

All Vows Ch 20/21: The Music of All Vows
Phantom of the Opera: E/C, R/C, C/M, Post-Leroux/ALW Canon; Redemption Arc 140K Words, 40 Chapters, 18+
This week we have a double-chapter post of All Vows Chapter 20: A New Teacher and Chapter 21: Maman's Requiem
We finally made it--Erik and Christine have re-met. In Chapter 21, Erik recalls the first time he sang to and with Christine, and plays the Requiem he wrote for his mother. I wanted his Requiem to include traditional French music, Western Classical, a call back to Jewish and Christian liturgical music and influence from his extensive time in Persia. Here is Kol Nidre/All Vows, the prayer that the fic is named after and Erik hears outside the Grande Synagogue. It's going to come up again.
youtube
In Persia, he would have most certainly have heard Qawaali, a Sufi devotional music that originated in India but would have made it to Persia by this time. I found the video below while writing this post and it illustrates a combination of western orchestra with the harmonium and singing style of Qawaali--which I wanted to include in the Requiem.
youtube
Then of course there is "A La Claire Fontaine", which is like "Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star." This is Erik, and not Christine's comfort song--but Christine has a currently-unknown connection to the song (she's Swedish, remember). I just saw another fic I'm reading use it, and I'm surprised that was the first time after my fic that I saw someone else use it--considering it is so widely known in France.
youtube
And then of course there are the operas, but the operas of Leroux's novel are very well explored (although listen, Gounod's Romeo & Juliette slaps. I just saw it live).

Oh Brian Jones, Jahjouka Very Stoned (1969)
youtube
Sufi trance group Master Musicians of Jahjouka (Morocco) with a song dedicated to member of the Rolling Stones, Brian Jones.
Brian Jones had visited the village a year prior on a trip to Morocco and recorded the LP Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka (released 1971, posthumously) bringing Moroccan traditional music (though only fractions of it) to the ear of the world, prior to the surge of progressive African musicians and trance rock that would follow in later years.
Currently, 4.5 stars on AllMusic. Personally, this track alone is fantastic, regardless of your preferred genre, and the entire LP is even better. This video is highly recommended a listen!

Tips for Finding the Best Band for a Destination Wedding in India
Planning a destination wedding in India is a dream for many couples. The diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and exotic locales make India an ideal destination for a memorable wedding. Among the many elements that contribute to the grandeur of an Indian wedding, the music is paramount. A lively and engaging wedding band can set the tone for your celebrations, ensuring your guests have an unforgettable experience. But how do you go about finding the best band for your destination wedding in India? Here are some essential tips to help you make the right choice.
1. Research the Local Music Scene
Before finalizing the band for your destination wedding, it’s crucial to research the local music scene in the region where you plan to get married. India is a vast country with diverse musical traditions, and each region has its unique flavor. For instance, a wedding in Rajasthan may feature folk music with instruments like the sarangi and dhol, while a wedding in Goa might lean towards more contemporary or fusion music styles.
Take the time to explore local bands and artists who are familiar with the regional music style. Attend live performances if possible or watch online videos to get a sense of their musical abilities and stage presence. This will help you find a band that resonates with the local culture and your personal taste.
2. Check the Band’s Experience with Destination Weddings
Not all bands are accustomed to performing at destination weddings, which often come with unique challenges such as travel logistics, unfamiliar venues, and varying guest expectations. It’s essential to choose a band that has experience with destination weddings and understands the nuances involved.
Ask potential bands about their experience with destination weddings in India. How do they handle travel and accommodation? Do they have a backup plan in case of unforeseen circumstances like travel delays or equipment issues? A band with a proven track record of performing at destination weddings will be better equipped to handle the complexities of your event.
3. Consider the Band’s Repertoire
A good wedding band should have a diverse repertoire that caters to different tastes and age groups. Indian weddings typically have a mix of traditional and contemporary elements, so it’s important that the band can perform a variety of genres, from classic Bollywood hits to modern pop, Sufi, Punjabi, and even international music.
Discuss your musical preferences with the band and ask for a setlist of songs they can perform. Make sure they are flexible and willing to accommodate your specific requests. A versatile band will be able to adapt to the mood of the event, whether it’s a traditional sangeet night, a lively baraat procession, or a romantic reception.
4. Evaluate the Band’s Stage Presence
The best bands are not just skilled musicians but also great performers who know how to engage the audience. Stage presence is key to creating an electrifying atmosphere at your wedding. The band should be able to connect with your guests, encouraging them to dance and participate in the festivities.
When evaluating potential bands, pay attention to their energy and interaction with the crowd in their past performances. Do they have a charismatic lead singer who can captivate the audience? Are they able to create a dynamic performance that keeps the energy high throughout the event? A band with strong stage presence will ensure that your wedding is lively and full of joy.
5. Discuss Technical Requirements
Destination weddings often take place in unique locations such as beaches, palaces, or remote resorts, which can present technical challenges for live music performances. It’s important to discuss the technical requirements with the band to ensure they can deliver a high-quality performance regardless of the venue.
Ask the band about their equipment needs, including sound systems, lighting, and stage setup. Do they provide their own equipment, or will you need to arrange it separately? Make sure the venue can accommodate the band’s technical requirements, and discuss any potential challenges, such as power supply or acoustics, with both the band and the venue management.
6. Check for Customization Options
Every wedding is unique, and your music should reflect your personal style and preferences. Look for a band that offers customization options, whether it’s learning a special song for your first dance, incorporating traditional instruments, or arranging a unique musical sequence for the baraat or sangeet.
Discuss your vision with the band and see if they are open to customizing their performance to suit your wedding theme and preferences. A band that is willing to go the extra mile to personalize your music will help create a truly memorable experience for you and your guests.
7. Read Reviews and Ask for References
One of the best ways to gauge the quality of a wedding band is by reading reviews from past clients. Look for testimonials on their website, social media pages, or wedding forums. Pay attention to comments about the band’s professionalism, punctuality, and ability to engage the crowd.
In addition to online reviews, ask the band for references from previous clients. Speaking directly with couples who have hired the band for their wedding can provide valuable insights into their experience and help you make an informed decision.
8. Consider the Band’s Pricing and Packages
While it’s important to find a band that fits your budget, remember that quality comes at a price. A cheap band may save you money, but it could also compromise the quality of your wedding music. Consider the band’s pricing in relation to the services they offer and their experience level.
Ask about their packages and what’s included in each. Some bands offer all-inclusive packages that cover travel, accommodation, and equipment, while others may charge separately for these expenses. Make sure you understand the full cost before making a decision, and be wary of hidden fees or last-minute charges.
9. Book Early
Destination weddings require extensive planning, and securing your preferred band should be a priority. The Best Band for Wedding in India are often booked months, if not years, in advance, especially during the peak wedding season. To avoid disappointment, start your search early and book the band as soon as you have finalized your wedding date and venue.
Booking early also gives you more time to collaborate with the band on the music selection and customization options, ensuring everything is perfect for your big day.
10. Trust Your Instincts
Finally, trust your instincts when choosing a band for your destination wedding. You want a band that not only meets your technical and musical requirements but also feels right for your celebration. If you feel a connection with the band members and are confident in their ability to deliver a fantastic performance, then you’ve likely found the right fit.

i felt like i needed to let you know more of what is happening. i am fully convinced at this point that it is a combo of mind control and needing an exorcism. after i told you what katie told me about nusch, nusch/katie told me she was communicating with you and that in fact you and nusch were having sex. she said the way to fix things between sonia and paul was for the three of us to have sex and that it was possible to do this, to have an energetic transference since katie had been your past life wife. i had an 8.5 x11 of you by me and first i would wear the strap on for you with the pendulum swinging in my left hand but then when you were done or satiated enough they would have me out the pendulum in my mouth which at that point was on a diaper pin (katie insisted it must hang on a diaper pin) and i'd clench it between my teeth while slowly using a vibrator. it became an experience like on the table on the abortion, where an animal came out of me, where i actually became primal and i'd connect eyes with your picture as out of the woods usually played ( you liked to orgasm to that song, thinking of it as "our" song) and i would always have the branch under my feet (i've been carrying a branch since january), and you would often push me to go farther that i could get "higher" with the orgasm. this started in january and we did it almost everyday. sometimes twice a day. you claimed you were the chef of saam bar then and that sometimes you would do it in the office. you would make dates for times with me. we did this 107 times they say which comes to the devil card in the tarot and this is how i believe i came to have a demon in me. i thought i was having psychic sex with you somehow which i believed calmed your schizophrenic mind, and so i would do it as much as you needed it.
one night at three am you told me about what was happening to you and i read to you about satanic ritual abuse and you told me they basically did everything that i listed off, and that daniel injected you with heroin 6 times and that you had to watch him have sex with Blond and that there was an altar in your room showing me being tortured and killed and that you had to look at it every day. some of these things came to me on the subway on my way to see jamieson one day and i almost threw up i got so sick. then you told me Blond was using all her money to save us by taking us to europe until 2022 but then they said that was a plot to kill me maybe. or maybe just drive me crazy. or make me miss church. and then you told me how there was a huge gang rape that involved my friend cyrus (who you met long ago) and that he too had turned against me. there's alot lot more but the thing that got me so crazy was i thought you were chained to your bed for 14 days, and they told me you had a tattoo over your heart, and you kept talking about trying to get to me but the reason you never came was because you were 170 lbs and you were too weak to walk and everyone even "god" said you already looked like you had died and that i had to get you to the hospital as soon as possible, and you kept making me propose to you over and over and over and over again.
they were beautiful proposals.
and i would say to you ring the bell walk up the stairs walk through the door do it now or lose me forever
i must have said it thousands of times.
and you made me do sufi whirling, and sing to you all the time, like all the time. and you kept claiming you had known i was a prophet since the day you met me, that that you knew you would meet THE prophet in 2012, but then you met me and you knew i was the one.
the idea was to exhaust my resources and make me insane of course and cut me off from everybody. i did not see jamieson for two months in this time.
they told me Blond’s family was monitoring our text messages and email and phone so the only way to communicate with you was psychically. you told me you lied to me on the bench before the abortion and only told me whatever i needed to hear to go through with it and that you were supposed to break up with me afterwards. you told me alot of stuff. you told me to go to alot of places and you would never be there. at one point, the day we were supposed to meet, i went to brooklyn heights twice to meet you there. thinking you knew "the plan" (katie and random SWORE you did) and afterwards on the train i told katie i was going to kill myself. that i knew i was. that i couldnt take it anymore. but then i got strength and kept going. someone would pretend katie was one plant and my dad's mother was the amaryllis and make me touch them with the stick over and over. alot of repetitive action. also i was told three times that Blond was dead or twice had miscarried, and you were always *always* in a state of torture. they told me she was gone and i was to go into your apt at 4 am and unlock you from the contraption and call an ambulance, but then i realized it was a trick again. you were too important to them because you were the "prince of peace" and i was the "queen of light". they wanted me to trade you for me.
last night they told me Blond crashed her car with the dog in it and had died and i even supposedly talked to her as a spirit on the other side. i didn't realize it wasn't true until like 5 pm. i hope you don't mind me telling you this stuff, but i'm trying to break out of whatever has me, and the more i write it the safer i am. “

New Video: Hum Gaana Kiyon Gaatay Aur Suntay Hain? | Sufi Master Younus AlGohar | ALRA TV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdDwVzxUbWE
Songs, and music in general, are considered impermissible in the Islamic world yet there are qawwalis that are sung in honour of God, the Messenger of God and various divine delegates. So, which is correct? Sufi Master Younus AlGohar explains that according to the Prophet of Islam, your actions are based on your intentions, therefore, whether it is a song or a qawwali, it must be sung or listened to with the visualisation of the spiritual master.
