Everything I Read in 2016
For the third year in a row, I logged every novel, short story collection, poetry compilation, graphic novel, and collected edition of monthly comics I read, excluding individual monthly comics (on which I continued to fall catastrophically behind) and anything I read (and reread, and reread again) for my day job. My only big change? A lot of these books were read on my iPad Mini. And a good number were for my gay book club (you can guess which ones).
If you don’t yet keep track of your reading, you should start in 2017. It’s your best bet for hitting a reading goal, and for folks like me who read a ton, it’s a nice way to recall books that otherwise departed your memory.
For the tl;dr crowd, here are my Top 13 for the year, in the order in which I read them:
On Writing, Stephen King
Binti, Nnedi Okorafor
The Girls, Emma Cline
I Am a Hero Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, Kengo Hanazawa
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Benjamin Alire Saenz
The Hero: Book Two, David Rubín
Night Sky With Exit Wounds, Ocean Vuong
Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders (I read an ARC)
A Choir of Ill Children, Tom Piccirilli
Habitat, Simon Roy
Prez Vol. 1, Mark Russell, Ben Caldwell, Domo Stanton
Bones of the Coast, edited by Shannon Campbell, Jeff Ellis, Kathleen Jacques
(New X-Men Omnibus was a re-read, or it would be up here.)
The rest is below the jump!
I don’t really feel like dumping on anything this year. I definitely got burnt out on comic anthologies, and I hated A Little Life, but the good outweighs the bad. Below is the full list, divided by month, followed by a few statistics and an evaluation of my 2016 reading goals as established last January.
[A note on comics: I feel guilty that I’ve left off colorists and inkers, as they contribute so much to a book, but I defaulted to cover credits while logging my reading and don’t have most of these books on-hand to fix it now.]
January
The Amazing World of Gumball: Fairy Tale Trouble, Megan Brennan, Katy Farina, Jeremy Lawson
Adventure Time: Masked Mayhem, Kate Leth, Bridget Underwood, Drew Green, Vaughn Pinpin, Meredith McClaren
Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder: The Mysteries of Unland, Kim Newman, Maura McHugh, Tyler Crook

98 Graphic novels/collected editions of comics (up from 84 in 2015 and a measly 42 in 2014)
3 Books of poetry (triple the 2015 and 2014 counts!)
About 35 Books written or edited by female authors (up from 20 in 2015 and 16 in 2014; note that I’m only counting writers and editors, not artists, and I’m counting books, not unique authors)
Roughly 19 books by (known-to-be) non-white authors (down from 30 last year but up from 9 in 2014...but both this year and last were inflated by multiple entries from manga creators)
...and at least 16 books written or edited by queer and trans authors.
So...any suggestions for 2017?

Creating a Spring Board
[insert image here]
The spring board presentation is a video recorded presentation designed to help us explain and construct our premise for the FMP to the examiner. A spring board is a large sheet of board in which we decorate with images relating to our ideas - such as inspiration, drawings and designs we have created for the project as well as materials and anything which we can link into the concept of our FMP. This board of influence acts much like a mood board - it is a collection of ideas, concepts and imagery which inspire us so that we can ‘spring’ ideas from it. The boards purpose is to help us explain the direction of our project while filming, which was the main task of the presentation.
Gathering Imagery:
One of the main focuses of the spring board is to present imagery which inspire and influence us in some way. This could be primary photographs or drawings as well as secondary images such as the work of artists or other people we find interesting. To create a cohesive and organized presentation we were advised to split our springboards into 4 key groups. Deciding my 4 groups was fairly easy as i had already been looking at some separate themes - which very much linked into one another but were individual at the same time. Keeping a cohesive main theme is important through out the project, the theme i have chosen is Horror, which leads into many sub groups. My 4 groups were as follows:
Each of my groups were supported by artists imagery and other forms of research within the spring board, and while being different and unique in their own right, they all fit into the singular theme of horror and different ways in which horror can be interpreted and presented. I will now explain each of my groups and show the imagery and research which i provided within my spring board groups.
Sculpture:
Perhaps the most dominant section within my spring board is my sculpture imagery and influence research. This is perhaps the largest section because of the large amount of sources and influential artists i have been following for a while. I have tried to choose sculpture pieces which are each unique and separate in their own ways but are all joined under the similar theme of horror. Within the broad range of sculptures i have mainly focused upon the human form and human face, as well as sculptures/designs which are centered or based upon the human body. All of these pieces take the human form, distort and transform it into something new, unrecognizable yet familiar. It is this deformation of something so familiar which makes these designs so disturbing and grotesque. All of these sculptures take something normal and common, something we see or use everyday and transform them, making theme creepy and scary. For example, the artist Jason Kishell takes normal objects such as mugs and vegetables and then gives them life, distorting them by adding creepy human mouths. This combination of seemingly un - matchable features combines creates creepy, unsettling imagery which disturbs the viewer.
It is this reaction which i would like to cause through my designs, and, if coupled with an interactive element such as within Kim Ye’s work, i believe i can create a truly unsettling, creepy user experience.
Illustration
The main inspiration behind my horror theme has been the work of Junji Ito - his disturbingly detailed illustrations as well as the horrifying short narratives he creates are a great inspiration. Through Junji Ito’s work i have been lead to other influential and brilliant artists such as Mario Suehiro and Usamau Firiya, artist which Junji Itos cited as influences to him. I have heavily referenced these artists within my spring board, and featured some of my favorite illustrations they have created. I have predominantly been looking at Japanese horror artists, as they seems to have such an interesting and unique approach to the genre, especially body horror and the transformation of the human body is particular; themes in which i am focusing on heavily. All of the artists i have sourced also create comic book narratives and graphic novels - they use their illustrations to tell narrative, which links greatly to my other theme of user interaction. The reader becomes interested and gripped by the events, the characters and the plot of the stories and the horror aspect helps add a lot more tension. The reader should become almost mesmerized with the narrative and the illustrations, creating a story telling experience.
Films
Another of the four groups i have included within my spring board are classic horror films, films which feature some form of body horror or grotesque visuals, such as a creature, Like in the film The Thing, which has been on of my biggest influences. Other influential films i have included are the classic Alien movie, which i have referenced earlier within my project, From beyond, one of my favourite cult classic horror films as well as a few other influential films featuring the use of practical effects to create disturbing and disgusting creatures, transformations and imagery.
The use of physical tactile effects is my main influence within these films - the practical visuals create a much more believably terrifying atmosphere within the films and help to develop a more convincing and therefor scarier viewing experience. Not only this but i am greatly impressed and influenced by the brilliant craftsman ship and use of effect and materials used to create these un-natural, un-earthly creations. It is very interesting to discover that the majority of the time these disgusting visual effects were created by re-purposing everyday items such as Bubble gum and Oysters.
Absurd Humour
My Absurd Humour theme is the one which stands out the most, and it could be said connects the least to my theme of horror and viewer interaction/viewer experiences. However, i have created connections within theme and i feel like this section plays an important role. Within Absurd Humour i have been exploring the idea of how horror themes can be expressed or presented differently. In a lot of my sources in this section, such as the work of Gary Baseman, the horror aspect isn’t instantly apparent. In fact, Baseman's illustrations seem childish and naive, until you look closely and discover the darker and more sinister undertones in the imagery. This idea of almost hiding the horror and going against the viewers expectations greatly links to my theme of audience interaction and the idea of an audiences experience with the art. Instead of throwing the horror at you, like most of my other sources, my influences in the absurd humour section are more subtle and secretive when portraying horror. This is an idea i will be explaining and developing within the future.
I feel like including another way to approach horror themes was important and it helps give my spring board, and my project as a whole, a lot more depth and variety. It also provides me with a lot more options and directions i could potentially take my project. Another reason i wanted to include this theme is because i find all of these artist very influential and i am a huge fan of their work, especially the illustrations of Joan Cornella and Gary Baseman, and i’ve been waiting for the chance to begin creating work inspired by theirs.
Presenting my ideas
[insert image of moodboard]
The layout of the spring board is very important in communicating your ideas in an organized and understandable manner. Creating a good layout which presents a range of imagery while not being cluttered can be difficult, and i have tried my best to do this.
For our spring boards we were advised to gather imagery for 4 key subjects which inspire us, so the obvious action was split the imagery into 4 sections within the spring board, which i did and then titled to make it clear. because the 4 subjects i chose were each in different mediums and all visually unique, while still remaining under the overall umbrella theme of horror, it is easy to tell them apart. However, to exaggerate each section further i made sure to leave a small area of blank space around theme, separating them from each other.
I was slightly worried that i may forget the names of the key artists i have included while filming my presentation, so to help myself out and also to show the viewer what artists had inspired me i included a list of the medias creators under each section. Here are the list i created showcasing the artists who i included within my spring board:
I have made the artists at the top of my lists italic. These are the artists which i planned to mention and talk about the most, i put them in italic to help me to remember to talk about them, as i feel they are perhaps the most important for explaining my ideas and influence. The italic text also communicates this fact to the viewer.
I also included colour keys for each topic as i thought it would be interesting to see how colour has been used in the different mediums and how the colours can be compared. Surprisingly, despite my project being focused upon horror and being heavily focused on disturbing, morbid themes the colour schemes for each topic were generally very bright and vivid. The colour schemes were all very similar, sporting bright colours mostly associated with joy, happiness and light hearted themes - instantly contrasting against the imagery and ideas of the pictures.
Presentation Review:
Now that i have filmed my Springboard Presentation i can look back on it and review the strengths and weaknesses of my performance.
One key weakness which i often struggle with is the ability to communicate my ideas clearly and quickly - i often ramble on and take time to get to the actual point of what i am discussing. However, in this presentation i feel like i have improved on this; Before presenting i knew exactly what i wanted and i think this shows - i have tried to be straight to the point as well as clearly spoken and knowledgeable, to show that i know what i am talking about and how passionate i am about my themes and research. Aside from a few areas i feel like i have been able to keep the presentation short and to the point.
