Currently writing up something for this week's flash fiction friday prompt and it got me thinking about stuff to do with the backstory of the current campaign. Kinda-maybe spoilers under the cut.

While Merri and Yoruk had four kids in the end, the first three were all pretty close together all things considered. Gavid was born just 5 years after the Destiny's New Servants campaign ended. Then Ewan came along about 80 years later and Moira another 120 years after that.

While Merri and Yoruk probably did plan to have at least one or two more children after Moira, it just didn't seem to be happening. So they suck it up and get on with life. Merri eventually becomes Archlector, Yoruk becomes Commander of the Moradhir Guard and they end up with a bunch of grandkids and great-grandkids. Everything is basically perfect.

Then about 450 years post DNS, Merri suddenly finds herself ending up with child number 4. Meredith and Yoruk do not complain about this. They're actually pretty ecstatic about it, since they thought they were well past done by this point. Unfortunately, the demands of their jobs mean that finding the time to raise a dwarflet is pretty damn hard. So little Llachlan is mostly raised by relatives and doesn't get to see his parents very much, though they both try their damndest to spend as much time as possible with him. It does, however, become increasingly difficult once the Cult of the Black Lady starts showing back up on their radar again.

As Llachlan gets older, it becomes very obvious that he's a bit different to most dwarflets his age: he doesn't like much physical contact, he prefers his own company and he is extremely prone to emotional outbursts over the strangest things. Yoruk, thankfully is able to recognise the similarities to one of his own relatives and is able to adapt so that his youngest son can have his needs met (yeah, the kid's autistic they just don't call it that yet).

One thing that does not help matters, however, is the fact that little Llachlan is the spitting image of his grandmother. The bad one. And as much as both Yoruk and Meredith try to look past it, they're both still only mortal with all the failings that come with that.

So Llachlan grows up in a family that does love him dearly, but he is very aware of his own differences and the fact that his parents, despite their best efforts, seem particularly loathe to discuss some topics around him.

Then there is the fact that, through no real fault of her own, Meredith has left all her children one hell of a legacy to try and live up to. Not that she wants them to. The idea of them ever having to go through even a fraction of what she did horrifies her, and she's told all of her children and grandchildren as much. However, that doesn't really stop any of them from feeling the weight of it anyway. Llachlan feels it extremely keenly as he cannot seem to find it in himself to connect to any of the gods that are worshipped in Fangthane. The rest of his family all seem to feel some sort of connection to either Moradin or Throff even if they don't feel Called by Them, but Llachlan doesn't feel anything at all, which just makes him feel even more alienated. After all, how can a son of the Archlector not feel even the slightest bit of connection to the gods she works for?

Those facts, in themselves, would be bad enough on their own. Llachlan already felt completely alienated from his family and neglected by his parents. Then one day, not long after his 30th birthday, he accidentally sets a tablecloth alight during an argument with his mother. In front of more or less the entire family, which included Queen Garni and Prince Garin and their respective families.

As I've noted before; dwarven sorcerors are rare, and they are not well-liked by the people of Fangthane. This is mostly because sorcerors are usually the result of one ancestor or another deciding that getting with a dragon is a good idea, and dwarves (generally) don't like dragons very much.

However, in Llachlan's case, it's not so much the fact that there might've been a dragon involved somewhere in his heritage that's the problem (though that certainly does not help matters, and leads Yoruk to question what the hells is up with his birth family). In this instance, the use of such magic is yet another reminder of past trauma, so the reaction to such a display by Meredith and Yoruk is, understandably, not all that positive. Even though Meredith and Yoruk try their best to tell and show their son that they still love him and simply want the best for him, the damage has been done and Ionah is more than happy to take advantage of the rift that's been created.

The last time Meredith and Llachlan speak to each other before the events of the current campaign, is when Llachlan informs his mother that he's joined the Cult she's spent most of her career trying to put down and Meredith basically all but Disowns him. Of course, it's something she immediately regrets, but she can't take the words back at that point. Llachlan walks out the door, fully believing that his family despise him and would be better off without him.

Even a decade later, when about half his family turn up to try and prevent his sacrifice at the hands of the Cult that he's fallen into, he can't bring himself to believe that they're there for his sake. In Llachlan's mind, the only reason his parents even showed up was because the Cult was so close to freeing their patron from her prison. He died at their hands and never saw the utter devastation that occurred just a few moments later.

Is it any wonder then, that when Meredith's spirit appears before him in the Hall of Heroes 430 years later, that he isn't all that happy to see her? That he doesn't want to accept any of her apologies or grant her any forgiveness? Not that Meredith asks for it; she knows she screwed up. As long as Llachlan is free from Ionah's influence and can move forward to lead a happier life, then she's content to have him hate her for the rest of it.

Hello! I just found you blog and I have to say i absolutly love it! Do u still take requests? If so could i get the First OFA user with a s/o who can cancel out any type of quirk by using her right hand? If ur comfortable writing it could u make s/o pregnant and First had to leave her bc he had to fight his brother. Fast forward and Midoriya meets a girl, the girl being Firsts daughter (she has a long life quirk) and the girl talks about her mother and her father (who she never met) but she's not mad at him for leaving them and tells him how much her mother still loved First so much till her death. Make it angsty with fluffy ending pls. Thanks! Have a nice day/night!

[insert the first user’s first name] is about to walk out the door when a familiar voice stops him.

“Are you absolutely sure about this?” Asks his wife of nine years, [f/n].

“I am and it isn’t like I have much of a choice.” He tells her.

“Let me help you, with my quirk you’d have a fighting chance!” [f/n] argues.

[f/n]’s quirk allows her to block quirk genes by the touch of her right hand. A very usual but limited quirk. And he isn’t about to place her on the battle field. He can’t do that to her. Anyone but her.

“NO! Please, just stop [f/n] ... I love you too much to lose you.”

“I feel the same. [insert the first user’s first name], please let me help you, we can do this together.” [f/n] continues.

He knows all to well that she isn’t going to stop. Not until he gives in and let’s her help. It was attitude like this that made him fall in love with her.

A sigh escapes his lips as he walks over to her. Cupping her face in his hands, he leans in for a kiss. [f/n] latches onto him refusing to let him go. He holds to her slowly breaking the kiss. He gazes into her watery [e/c] eyes.

She asks, “If I can make one selfish request... Just stay. Just a little longer. Please.” She begs brokenly.

[insert the first user’s first name] can feel his heart breaking as he nods holding her tighter. “Of course my love.”

120 years later, set during Izuku’s new work-study with Endeavor

If there is one thing that Izuku understood about the former users is that they all undoubtedly had regrets. All of them had given up so much to protect the people they cared about and create a bright future without All for One. Izuku often feels guilty for living in the future that the seven before him had strived to create. In this mind they should be the ones living in this society. Not him. If there is a way he can bring them back to live in this era, he’d do it. Even if that means he has to or will die to do it.

Kiddo don’t you fucking dare.

Izuku jumps at a deep voice which sounds a little like Banjo Daigoro, the Fifth User of One for All. Embarrassedly Izuku rubs the back of his head. He should have known the vestiges can feel his thoughts. He mutters a soft apology but gives no explanation knowing that they already know his reasoning for such thoughts.

Walking down the sidewalk, Izuku walks with Katsuki on patrol.

“Can you actually talk with them?” Katsuki asks having heard Izuku mutter.

“Kind of. It’s only Mr. Banjo right now.” Izuku says.

“Must suck having a bunch of voices in your heard.” Katsuki says walking head of Izuku.

“Not really.” Izuku says then softly mummers, “I already know what that is like.”

Oh, good god I wanna hug this child.

The voice that speaks is a woman’s voice, so Izuku figures that is Shimura Nana. All Might’s master, Shigaraki Tomura’s grandmother, and the seventh One for All user.

A small smile appears on his face, as he is flattered that Nana wants to give him a hug.

Continuing their patrol, Izuku notices a young woman with [h/l], [h/c] hair, and [s/c] colored skin. The sight of his girl makes Izuku stop walking as he stares. Staring there is this sensation in his heart. He quickly figures out that this sensation is the result of one of the vestiges, but he can’t figure out which one.

[f/n]...?

So, it’s the first user causing this sensation in his heart. Izuku knows his voice the best because the dream he had before the fight between his class and class one B.

Isn’t that the name of your wife?

It is.

Didn’t she have a quirk canceler?

She did.

Then who is...?

Guys this could be her decedent.

Dont say that! You’re going to make him feel bad!

No, no! It’s okay, if that is her decedent then I’m glad she moved on.

Well why dont we go see for yourselves? Come on kiddo, go make her your friend.

Izuku wordlessly follows the woman to a park. She walks over to a bench and sits down. Izuku stops himself from walking over trying to figure out how to open a conversation with the woman. As he thinks, twiddling his thumbs, he doesn’t notice the woman is staring at him.

“Are you okay little hero?” The woman asks suddenly standing before him.

“Y-Yeah! I...I uh...yo-you looked lonely s-so I thought I’d come s-sit with you for a while.”

The woman giggles, “That’s so sweet of you. My name is Shigaraki [d/n]. What’s your name little hero?”

Shigaraki [d/n]?

Coincidence this lady has your last name?

Doubt it.

“Deku! My hero name is Deku it is nice to meet you Miss Shigaraki. S-Say you wouldn’t happen to know someone by the name of Shigaraki [insert the first user’s first name], would you?”

W-Wha-Why is he asking that!?

Clearly he hears us.

Yeah, but to ask that right off the bat is a little weird.

No, I think it’s a valid question when you know someone with the same last name.

“[insert the first user’s first name]? So that was his name.” [d/n] smiles.

“You know him?”

“Not personally, but my mother talked about him a lot. So see, [insert the first user’s first name] is my father’s name. Or at least that’s what mom always said.”

FATHER!?

Man is this one hell of a Wednesday!

[f/n]... S-Sh-She was... she...

Shiggy snap out of it!

“Whoa, really?!”

“Do you know him?” [d/n] asks.

“Kind of sorta.” Izuku admits. “If you dont mind me asking, what kind of stories did your mom tell you about him? All I know about him is that he was a man filled of justice and always did the right thing.”

“That’s what mom always said too. Why dont we sit and talk?” [d/n] suggests.

“Lead the why Miss Shigaraki!”

“Please, call me [d/n].”

“What kind of quirk do you have?”

“It’s a long life quirk. Which is really strange since my mother could cancel out quirks with her right hand and my dad had a quirk called One for All.” [d/n] explains.

“Wow!”

As [d/n] and Izuku sit on the park bench, [insert the first user’s first name] is still recovering from the shock of learning he has a daughter. It brings him to tears knowing that he left her when she was pregnant. He was such a horrible husband and [f/n] deserved so much better. Looking at this daughter through Izuku’s eyes he can easily see [f/n]. Hearing how [f/n] never dated or thought about remarrying hurts but at the same time he is glad that despite he was gone she remained faithful to him.

“So, are the rings you wear around your neck?”

“Hers? Yep! Before my dad left, he gave her his ring as a keepsake. Then when...she passed she gave me hers and his.” [d/n] answers with a smile.

[insert the first user’s first name] is breaking down in the vestige world hearing all of this.

“Deku are you okay?”

“Y-Yeah it’s just one of those days when you start crying for no reason.” Izuku lies.

“Had a few of those days myself.” [d/n] smiles. “Say, do you think my dad would have liked me?”

Izuku smiles brightly and says, “Yep! If he were here right now I know he would give you a big hug and tell you how much he loves you and how sorry he is for leaving.”

“Never said I was mad at him for leaving.” [d/n] chuckles. “I know that he had a had every intention of coming home. Deku,”

“Yeah?”

“If you ever fight All for One, knock his teeth out. His smile is creepy as hell.”

HAHA! She ain’t wrong.

Does she know that’s her uncle she’s talking about?

He has no right claiming to be her uncle.

“Yes ma’am!”

Welcome To The World, LittleBean: A Life Update

Dear Future Husband,

My sister had the baby! And it made me depressed.

I kind of receded from the world for a couple of weeks and stopped talking to people I enjoy talking to, and stopped doing things I enjoy doing, and kind of stayed in my room unless it was absolutely necessary to leave.

Why, might you ask, would I have done such a thing as a response to such a happy event?

Well, for some of the reasons I've written about previously. The emotional weight of the sadness that comes along with seeing a younger sibling live through something you yourself desire but feel you'll never have, is probably the biggest.

But another reason I've been really down is because of my mother.

Dear old MotherLivelyHeart has problems.

I think I've mentioned this previously, but if/when I marry, I will most definitely be marrying INTO a family and as "out" of my own as I possibly can.

MotherLivelyHeart suffers from anxiety and depression. Shocker, I know.

In fact, my inner voice is comprised mainly of her criticism and negativity. Shocker, I know.

Dear old MotherLivelyHeart has never really wanted to be a mother, as far as I can tell. Shocker? ...I dunno.

When I was growing up, my mother used to always say "I only had children for the grandkids" and everyone would laugh. But HAHA! it wasn't a joke. I figured out pretty early on that she was kind of serious with that statement.

But nothing in my life confirmed that until she was on the phone with her machutanim on the day LittleBean was born and repeated that sentiment to them.

So, all my life, she's struggled with being the parent she never wanted to be in order for us to have offspring that she could love and adore and spoil and then send home to their parents without having to parent herself.

THIS is the "home" I came from.

THIS is the parenting I received.

It's absolutely no wonder I'm so screwed up.

My mother has been overbearing my entire life. And a lot of it comes from her own insecurities and anxieties and lack of the world living up to her expectations. Which is kind of understandable.

The problem comes when those expectations come at the cost of other peoples' comfort and safety.

LilSis had a c-section. The baby wasn't exactly breached, but was flipped at a weird angle and stuck. The baby was also a meconium baby, so while it was already over a week past the due date, LilSis thought she still had time. But as it turned out there wasn't any time because when she went for what she thought was a routine check up, they induced her and after two days of labor and nothing happening, they did the c-section.

Now, LilSis made it clear earlier this year that she didn't want anyone at the hospital with her aside from her doula and husband. No visitors, family included. The rest of us seemed to accept this, but MotherLivelyHeart just kind of smirked and went, "yeah, ok, we'll see about that."

And I get that LilSis is her baby.

I get that it's not easy to see your child suffer.

I get that she's been waiting her whole life to be a grandmother.

I get that she's had expectations about what it would be like to meet her grandchildren, especially her first grandchild.

I. GET. IT.

But when LilSis facetimed and showed us the baby and B"H the baby looked fine but LilSis was clearly too pale and weak and dizzy and needed to get off the phone, but again repeated that she didn't want anyone coming to the hospital, dear old MotherLivelyHeart's response was that she wanted to "surprise" them at the hospital.

"I don't need to ask permission."

"I'm not a 'visitor', I'm her MOTHER."

"I don't need permission to see my own daughter."

"I know what she needs, I'll just drop it off, give her a hug and leave."

"I don't need to see her, I just want to see the baby."

UHM, NOOOOOOOOO.

Your daughter is almost 30.

She's been married for over half a decade.

She has a right to her space and her boundaries for her little nuclear family and YOU ARE CROSSING THEM by even THINKING that would be acceptable.

And the next day, my mother called LilSis and asked her about something she wanted to bring with her. LilSis made it clear that she didn't want anyone to come. When my mother didn't seem to get this, my brother in law texted her a kind "now isn't a good time" message and my mother felt "ganged up on".

She went into a tailspin.

"They don't like me."

"What did I ever do to them that they hate me so much?"

"I've been dissed and dismissed."

"They've cut me out of their lives."

And sooooooo many other thoughts along those lines.

There isn't even enough space here to describe all the insane things she did as a response to this "rejection" she was experiencing.

She was 100000000000% projecting her own thoughts, expectations, and experiences with her own c-section onto LilSis and the whole situation was absurd.

Then LittleBean ended up back in the hospital because of some complications and LilSis and her husband still wanted space.

Now, what MotherLivelyHeart doesn't know, because I will never tell her, is that I saw LittleBean before she did.

Because I'm actually supportive and respectful of boundaries, when they got home LilSis and her husband allowed me to come by and drop stuff off, and run some errands for them (while they were still keeping overbearing MotherLivelyHeart at arms length). So I met LittleBean like 3 or 4 times. And the babes is absolutely precious. <3

LilSis and her husband finally let MotherLivelyHeart over this past week to meet LittleBean and help out and it's like a switch was flipped. Suddenly everything for MotherLivelyHeart is sunshine and rainbows and I legit can't handle the mood swings.

But I digress....

One night last week I drove around and cried and screamed for an hour.

It absolutely sucks when you have no one to talk to.

Which brings me to the next part of my life update:

I finally spoke to a therapist.

So, I thought I was ghosted by the therapist I wanted to speak to. It took a few days, but he finally responded there was an issue with his online scheduler and he needed me to reschedule.

Fine, whatever.

I rescheduled for two weeks from that date (which had already been rescheduled from two weeks prior). So, now it's been a month and a half.

Fine, whatever.

Well, my meeting with him ended up being earlier this week. As it turns out, this therapist I wanted to speak to isn't taking on new clients at the moment, so he was acting more as triage for his practice and had a 15 minute zoom call with me before picking a therapist from his practice he thought I'd connect with.

So the next night I had an hour and a half zoom call with her and she's absolutely lovely and has experience working with children and adults who have experienced similar situations to the one I'm in.

For $120 I had my thought processes and experiences validated.

But that's pretty much it.

She told me I sound pretty level headed and understand what's healthy and what's not healthy in my life and in my past (which is one of the problems with being an overthinker, overanalyzer, and having done extensive research to try and figure out WTF is wrong with me), and she told me there are some exercises to try and reduce stress because it's clear that I'm overstressed and have been since I was a child, and even possibly since birth.

But these are all things I knew already. These are all things I've validated for myself. Yes, it's nice to hear a specialist say the same things, but for $120!?

I literally had to use unemployment money to pay for that. Unemployment that I'm going to have to end pretty soon.

How on EARTH am I supposed to be able to afford continued therapy when it costs so bloody much!?

It's absolutely awful that the people who need therapy the most are the ones who can't afford it.

And I found an organization that claims to help anyone who asks without needing an explanation, so I messaged them a brief "my life is a mess and I need to talk to a therapist. I found someone I think I can connect with, but it costs $120." and they sent me $10.

They said they help anyone who asks without an explanation.

I gave a valid explanation with a specific amount requested.

And they sent me $10.

It just so often feels like I'm banging my head against a wall.

Like I'm a joke to Hashem.

This random organization was like a beacon in the dark. A sign from Hashem that if I reach out for help, I can receive it.

He put this organization into my path and awareness just at the time that I needed it.

All so that He could mock me.

OF COURSE the therapy practice I chose doesn't take insurance.

Not that it would help, because my OBAMAdoesntCARE has been PENDING SINCE OCTOBER.

So OF COURSE I have to pay out of pocket.

And OF COURSE it costs so damn much.

And OF COURSE when I reach out for help I get laughed at.

What did they think I was supposed to do with the $10?

That's literally 1/12 of what I needed.

Even the Torah has us give more than that in maaser.

I legitimately don't understand.

Where do I have to go and what do I have to do to get a sugar daddy to pay for this so I can get my goddamn life in order!?

I'm literally drowning out here and God is throwing me half-deflated pool floaties.

On the bright side, I keep making amazing non-Jewish internet friends.

Do you know how much that sucks?

That I'm literally getting more support from non-Jewish internet friends that live halfway across the world than I am from my own community?

And it sucks even more to know that Hashem put those people into my path too!!

He literally keeps giving me things that He knows will make me feel worse because they make me feel better but also disconnected from the Jewish community, and not giving me things that would make me feel better and closer to Him and the Jewish community.

What am I supposed to do with that knowledge!?

I've often wondered if maybe I just wasn't meant to be Jewish. Like maybe there was some mistake and my mother isn't really Jewish and therefore I'm not Jewish and this is Hashem's way of telling me that I just need to separate myself from the Jewish world and go seek a secular life because that's truly who I'm supposed to be.

Except that my parents were married by a really chashuv community rav who did his research and would not have married my parents if there'd been even one safek as to her Jewishness.

And so, I'm stuck.

I'm stuck feeling constantly disconnected from the community that's supposed to be my rock and support. By the God who's supposed to be merciful and kind.

It's exhausting.

Are you out there? Do you feel the same? Are you a BT or ger or someone else who has lived both lives and can explain to me why yiddishkeit is better?

I have too much Jewish guilt to walk away from any of this, but I have too much mental stress to keep striving to be a part of it.

It's utterly exhausting to be stuck in the middle.

I hope you're doing better than I am.

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid prt 17 - prt1

Keeping up with the tradition, they all wound up back at Lance’s house. Keith and Pidge were bonding with Blue, his cat a ho when it came to pats... on her terms of course. Keith seemed mystified over what to do when a cat sat in your lap. Blue was a traitor, bunting up into Keith’s chin because she was a traitorous whore with no taste. In the kitchen with Hunk, Lance nursed a mug of warm wine mixed with blood, as Hunk baked. He couldn’t stop himself. He needed to unwind and Lance was happy to provide his kitchen for that

“Did you really break your phone, man?”

Lance looked over the rim of his mug

“Yep. Dropped it on my bedroom floor. It shattered on the spot”

“You said we’d talk... I’m feeling kind of left out man”

“I didn’t mean to make you feel left out”

“Ever since Keith came along, you’ve been acting weird. I know sometimes Pidge can be full on, but I thought we were tight”

“We are tight”

“Then what haven’t you been telling me? I’ve told you things I wouldn’t think of telling Pidge”

Lance felt as if Keith had gotten his wish and staked him through the heart

“It’s not like that...”

“Then what is it like?”

The vampire didn’t have a whole lot of options. He could confess he was a vampire and give Hunk a heart attack. He could keep lying, which was clearly hurting Hunk. He could claim Keith was threatening him, but then Pidge and Hunk would want to take things into their own hands... Fuck... He didn’t want to hurt Hunk. Lying really did hurt. His friends were so special to him that he hated having to distance himself... semi lies were as bad as the real thing

“Okay... okay... the truth is I’m not really over being sick. I’m still feeling sick most of the time and I’m not used to having company all the time. I didn’t want to tell you because you worry about me so damn much. I’ll recover, good as new, but I’m supposed to have spent this last week resting up as much as possible. I can’t help myself, I love hanging out with you and Pidge, so when you invite me I can’t say no. I pushed myself a little too hard to fast, but I promise I’m working on getting better”

Hunk’s eyes immediately welled with tears

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because all I need is to catch on some sleep. You and Pidge are my best friends. I want to make as many memories with you as I can. I also had a call that wasn’t great, so that’s been on my mind too”

“A call?”

“A work call. The woman was strung out of her mind, I had to call in a welfare check on her. It’s been exhausting, but nothing a few good nights sleep won’t cure”

“Man... I wish you’d told me. We could have gone back home...”

“It’s okay”

“It’s not okay. If you’re sick, you need to be resting. I’ll tell Pidge while you get ready for bed”

“Dude, I’m okay”

“Please, stop being stubborn! Pidge and I both know you’ve never been really well. You’re always so pale. But you never tell us anything. We’re your friends, we want you to rely on us”

He’d been told that by Hunk before, playing it off as a low immune had bought him about a years worth of silence on the matter

“I do. I love you guys like family. That’s why... that’s why it’s so hard. We’ll watch what Pidge filmed, then head to bed”

“Absolutely not. I’ll have dad come pick us up. Keith can crash at mine for the night”

“You don’t need to do that”

“I don’t need to, but I want to. Let me help”

Passing Keith off was a terrible idea. Keith didn’t mix well with others. If he snapped anything was likely to come out... but what Lance wouldn’t give for a night without having to worry about waking Keith

“His brother Shiro should be swinging around tomorrow to pick him up. It’ll be fine, it’s only one more night. Plus, if we don’t watch the film now we won’t be able to watch it all together as a group”

Sure, most of Keith’s face was hidden behind the mask but Lance could tell all his expressions from the way his muscles moved. His brain told him that at any rate. His imagination must have been filling in the blanks automatically based on what he knew of Keith’s personality

“You need rest”

“I’ll be resting on my chair. Nothing strenuous happening, other than being in trouble with Pidge for talking. We’ll watch the video, pick out what to keep and what to edit, then I’ll go straight up to bed”

Hunk sighed, picking up the closest tea towel off the kitchen bench as he did

“You better. I’ll still have dad pick us up. And you need to answer your phone”

“I only have my work phone and the home phone”

“Exactly. Two other ways of calling”

“I can’t promise I’ll hear them, but if I see you’ve called, I’ll call back. Deal?”

Holding his hand out, Hunk took it, his handshake firm

“Deal. Don’t go around worrying me like that, man. I’m still recovering from tonight. Did you see that grey stuff?”

“It was the light off the camera. From having the viewfinder open and in night mode. That’s my bet. That combined with dust. Anyway, anything haunting that place would have made themselves scarce thanks to Pidge. I wouldn’t want to be a ghost and on the wrong side of her”

“I thought she was literally going to blow steam from her ears. She was so cranky”

“Especially when Keith tripped. I thought she was going to go turn him into a ghost on the spot”

Lance snorted as he smiled. Keith would be the dopiest ghost. He’d probably actually turn into one, but go around thinking he was human

“So did I. Our little gremlin is viscous. How long do the cookies need?”

“10 minutes. Go on ahead, I’ll be in soon”

“Alright, buddy. Don’t forget to use the dishwasher instead of doing the dishes by hand. Tonight was hard on you too. You deserve to kick back and relax”

“Yep, will do”

Pidge had Lance’s laptop on her lap when Lance headed into the living room

“Pidge! You’re not supposed to be on there!”

Pidge jumped at being sprung in the act

“I was ordering you a new phone. What kind of idiot doesn’t use a lifeproof case?”

“Me when they’re not very lifeproof. You know there’s sensitive files on there”

“Relax. All I did was open the browser. I don’t want to know about your cases”

“That’s beside the point. How you feel if you were one of them. And, it’s not like I can’t buy a new phone from the post office”

“You can, but I’m picking out a good one”

“Nope. No. I just need a cheap one where I can message you guys, take photos of Blue, and watch cat videos”

“Pffft. No. Trust me, you need to embrace the future, no more living in the past. Now, what colour do you want?”

“I don’t care about colour”

“You’re hopeless! Here’s one for $1500”

“Absolutely no way. I can’t justify spending that much on a phone. No. I’m fine with a $120 cheapie”

“You’re not fine and those things are an insult to technology. Help me out Keith”

Keith’s expression said he was in for trouble. Keith would do anything to mess with his life further, including taking revenge by making Lance pay out an unreasonable amount of money. Give it enough time and everything flashy would become standard for much cheaper

“I don’t know if he’s allowed something, or if he’d just wind up breaking it”

“Damn! Nice one. Okay, I’m ordering your phone now...”

“Pidge!”

“... and it’s done. You can thank me later with a shitload of photos of Blue. She’s such a diva. You should make her her own socials”

Lance didn’t love socials. He didn’t love the fakeness. He wished people could see and love the things in them that they might hate because society had made them feel like shit. He only had socials because of Pidge and his Mami. Most of what he posted was of Blue and her perfect little toe beans... with the occasional, less than lady like, tongue blep as she glared at him. He wasn’t putting pressure on Blue to be perfect for an audience

“Seriously?”

“Yep. A new case is coming too. This one should be Lance proof. Do we need to think about putting child safety devices in place?”

“I don’t know, Pidgeon. Do I need to think about digging a shallow grave when I see the price?”

“Maybe... is it for me, or for you?”

“I don’t know yet”

“Then I don’t know either. Hurry up and sit down already, you can have your precious laptop back. I don’t see why you need the desktop set up and a laptop. Both are practically antiques”

“You did both builds last year”

Pidge moaned

“Exactly, antiques. A painful reminder of my youth”

“Keith, do me a favour and punch Pidge in the arm for me. She’s being an idiot”

Keith ignored him, scratching the base of Blue’s back where it met her tail, Blue purring. Everybody in the room sucked. If it worked and did what it was meant to, Lance was fine with it not being the latest and greatest

“Ha! He knows better than to hit me”

“Yeah, because he’s as scared of you as the rest of us”

Pitch ditched a cushion in his direction, that missed him completely

“Rude”

“Merp”

Keith simply snorted at the both of them, Blue was taking up too much of the hunter’s attention. Still, he was going to be the bigger man, no wet food for Blue until she came back and loved him again.

The next week of Lance’s life passed slowly. Very fucking slowly in parts. His thirst wasn’t getting better, Keith wanted to fight every day, he didn’t have the energy to keep up with his work, feeling like he was letting all his clients down. Something in his gut was trying to tell him something, and Lance wasn’t sure what it was. He hadn’t heard from Shiro. Keith’s answer to that problem was that Shiro would come back when it was safe. But “safe for who?” was a totally different question. Lance had found that gradually he was getting used to Keith’s presence. He didn’t like it. He didn’t like this kind of uneasy peace. Keith grudgingly ate Lance’s cooking. The idiot had burned toast... in the toaster. It didn’t take a degree to be able to put two pieces in and pull down the lever, but somehow he’d done it. He’d set off the fire alarms, waking Lance, who immediately went into panic mode. Smacking his arm on the wall, he’d burst the blood blister building beneath his skin, smearing blood on the wall, as he swore. Rushing into the kitchen, the toaster was on fire, Lance ripping the cord out the all and dumping the lot in the sink.

Swapping the washing from the machine to the dryer, Lance closed his eyes and counted to 10 before opening them again. He could hear Keith shuffling around in the kitchen. He could hear his phone vibrating on the bench. The way his coffee machine slowly came to life told him he had all of 5 minutes before Keith would be all up in his face demanding that they fight. He could be in the middle of vacuuming and Keith would still pop up and demand to fight. He seemed to be working out a style for himself and organising his thoughts as he did. He still hadn’t decided on Keith, but he had to give him some credit. He kept trying and he kept getting back up... He was still to get an actual blow in that Lance hadn’t allowed. Maybe he was sick from Keith continually beating him up? And maybe he was kind of enjoying things more than he let himself believe. Or maybe his defences were lower than normal thanks to still being sick.

“Lance! Message!”

So Keith was his answering service now? Where was that in the terms and agreements of having his house hijacked?

“I know! I heard! Some dick didn’t bring all his washing out!”

“That’d be you!”

Like fuck it was. His lapses didn’t count when it was his house and he was going through stuff. Watching Keith try to wash and live in two sets of clothes was painful, so now he had three sets, plus underwear and socks of his own. He had a whole damn drawer in the spare bedroom, the Hunter basically moved in

“Fuck off!”

So much for his calming breath.

Snatching his phone up, Lance’s chest went tight, his stomach dropped and his knees nearly went with it

“What’s wrong?”

Opening the message recorded, Lance held it to his ear as his hands shook

“Hi, Lance, it’s Sally here. Your grandmother’s taken a bit of a fall. She was awake when we found her, but we’ve transferred her to Platt General hospital. I’m sorry to drop this on you. If you want to give them a call, they might have more information for you...”

Lance’s phone slipped from his hand, Keith catching it before he could break another one

“Lance?”

“I’ve got to go”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. It doesn’t concern you... fuck...”

He was getting teary. His Mami wasn’t as strong as she’d once been

“Hey...”

Brushing Keith off, Lance started scrambling to get ready, his head already dreaming up worst case scenarios. Had his Mami fallen or had it been something more? Had something happened? Was she not telling him something?

Racing out the front door, he made straight for his car. The key didn’t seem to want to go into the ignition, Lance screaming at it in frustration

“Move over, I’ll drive”

Lance nearly told Keith to fuck himself. He didn’t know why he’d followed him out. Sliding across the bench seat, Keith climbed into the drivers seat

“What’s happened?”

“It’s... I need to get to Platt general”

“You’ll have to give me directions. What’s going on? Who’s in hospital?”

Whatever smart reply Keith had for that died on the man’s tongue. Giving a nod, Keith got the key into the ignition, the old bronco starting with a rumble.

The drive to Platt was horrible. It passed in a blur as Lance prayed to whoever was out there that it wouldn’t be something major. Barking directions at Keith, Keith copped all his bad mood and worry, the hunter barely parked before Lance was rushing to get out the car. He hadn’t even bothered to clip in his damn seatbelt for the drive

Lance should have known Keith knew all about his family. Keeping his hand on Lance’s good arm, to keep him from running off, Keith talked to the woman at the front information desk, finding his Mami’s room with more patience than Lance had. He’d been here before with his Mami, so he should have remembered the way up to the floor, Keith nearly getting them lost because Lance couldn’t stop the flood of tears rolling down his face over the fact his Mami wasn’t dead. Finding the right ward, the nurse at the desk looked up at them like she was perplexed by their presence, telling them that only family was allowed to see his Mami. With choked words Lance explained that he was her grandson and emergency contact, which was apparently Luis on the hospital side of things. It wasn’t supposed to be him. Lance lived the closest, and he was the one who always made time for his Mami. When the woman looked to Keith, Lance explained that he was Mami’s other grandson, Keith not at all comfortable with the sudden promotion to family. Signing in, the nurse led them to his Mami’s room. She’d fractured her hip in the fall, and done a bang up job on her face, Lance nearly face planting as his emotions grew further out of control.

Propped up on pillows, Lance let out a fresh sob at his Mami’s face. Keith telling the nurse he’d call if they needed anything. His Mami looked so frail, far too frail, her complexion washed out, but when she saw him, she was raising her arms towards him

“Oh, Mijo...”

Walking over to his Mami, Lance wrapped his arms around her the best he could

“I’m okay. It’s just the silly head of mine. I got a little muffled”

“I was so scared”

“I know, you’ve always had a sweet heart. But you know it takes more than a fall to stop me”

Lance snorted a laugh, well aware he was snotting on his Mami’s shoulder

“I was still scared. Sally called to let me know”

“She’s got a big mouth, that one. They say I’m off to surgery soon, time for the good drugs”

“Mami!”

His mother chuckled, her strength wasn’t what it was, so Lance reluctantly drew out of her embrace to sit beside her

“Now, enough of that face. It’s a fractured hip, I’ve still got plenty of life in this old bird”

He felt as scared as when his Papi passed

“I think I can...”

“Thank you. It’s nice to see Lance is making friends. He’s so insistent that he’s fine alone. I hope you’re a good friend to him”

Keith took the the opening to flee, Lance didn’t blame him. They weren’t friends... he didn’t know what they were

“Mijo, I’m okay. Where did you meet Keith “who knows”?”

“Does it matter?”

“It does when my baby boy is making friends... or is there something you’re not telling you Mami”

Lance groaned

• The Abbe de Coulmier politely demands requests that you move your quarters beside his. Chapter 4 - The Phantom Beyond the Door

9:00 PM.

It was getting to be the time when a normal kid would have to return home or else face the wrath of their parents, but for Kyoko and me, the night was just getting started.

We made our way to the station and hopped onto a train. This time, we weren’t heading for the ocean—our route would take us towards the mountains.

Of the six cases we were responsible for, the closest location was the Takeda Haunted Mansion. The cost was 161 million yen, higher than that of the very first Duel Noir I had been summoned for, which had a cost of 120 million yen.

I coerced a hallmate into lending me her laptop and looked up the location. Similar to previous Duel Noir sites, the Takeda Haunted Mansion was rumored among occult fanatics to be haunted by spirits.

The Takeda clan, consisting of descendants of warlord Shingen Takeda, had been a family of influential landholders who held tremendous power in the region from two hundred years ago up until World War II. With their might, they mercilessly suppressed uprisings and squashed revolts, leading to them being feared as the Takeda Headhunters for a time.

However, their domain was ravaged during the war, and with their honor fading, the surviving descendants settled into a quiet agrarian lifestyle. Time continued to pass, and the rapid depopulation of the village and the passing of the family patriarch resulted in the decrepit Japanese-style household being left abandoned in the darkness. And thus, the once-glorious mansion lost its prestige, becoming nothing more than one of the many haunted locations across the country. According to the online rumors, souls of fallen warriors wander the grounds, and any sentient beings who dare to venture inside are chased around by cackling, floating severed heads.

Everything about the Takeda Haunted Mansion made it seem like an apt location for a Duel Noir.

After spending an hour on the express train, Kyoko and I disembarked at a gloomy unmanned station.

“Geez, it’s cold...”

A piercing chill assaulted me the moment I stepped out onto the platform. My breath painted the air white around my face. The frigid air of the mountain basin was rapidly sucking the warmth from my body.

With our heads buried in our scarves, Kyoko and I huddled close together and passed through the ticket gate.

We took one step out from the station building and immediately found ourselves enveloped by an endless blackness. Stretching out straight before us was a narrow path, dimly lit by isolated streetlamps that invited us forward into the world of darkness. Only in the faint light could we make out the sight of falling snow.

“Maybe we should’ve come at a different time. I don’t think there’s much we can do here...” I sighed, beginning to regret our decision.

The night scenery was suffocating. Why must our destination be a haunted mansion of all places?

Kyoko remained glued to my side.

“Don’t worry, we won’t run into any ghosts,” I reassured her.

“I’m only staying close because I’m cold,” she replied curtly. However, her restless eyes told a different story.

The taxi we reserved in advance appeared out of thin air and drove up to us. A somber expression lingered on the driver’s face. He didn’t even bother to glance at us. The two of us hesitated to get in for a moment, but as we had no other way to reach our destination, we entered the vehicle.

“Where to?” the driver asked with a low, rough voice.

“Do you know where the Takeda Mansion is?” I asked in response.

The driver let out a slightly surprised grunt of affirmation and stepped on the gas pedal. His reaction intrigued me, but I intentionally didn’t pursue the matter.

Kyoko silently gazed out the window, appearing to be lost in thought. Not a ray of light shone outside. Like a submarine, the taxi dove deeper and deeper into the night.

After about half an hour, the sloping road we were on led us to a dead end surrounded by a bamboo thicket. Towering just beyond it was the jet black silhouette of a mansion, which stood out even in the endless void of darkness.

Two cars were parked between the menacingly swaying bamboo shoots—a Mercedes-Benz and a small red car.

“Kyoko, do you think—”

As its name suggested, the Takeda Haunted Mansion was supposed to be an abandoned haunted house. Its residents had long gone. With that in mind, the relatively new cars parked before the building meant that someone was visiting the mansion.

An unnerving feeling washed over me.

An inch or two of snow had accumulated on both cars. Judging by the day’s snowfall, they had been parked there for no less than a few hours. The tire marks had already been covered and rendered untraceable by the snow.

“Ladies... we’ve arrived,” the taxi driver said with a low voice.

I paid the fare and opened the door, when the driver continued.

“Excuse me for asking... but is something happening here tonight?”

“I’m not sure... Do you have some sort of idea?”

“I drove a young man here around noon... Even in this chilly weather, he had on a Hawaiian shirt, so I found him rather... peculiar...”

The driver’s voice transformed into a mumble towards the end, so I couldn’t quite catch what he said.

At any rate, multiple people seemed to be gathered at the mansion today. Since we knew there would be a Duel Noir here, whoever they were had to be involved. I grew more and more worried.

“Kyoko, let’s hurry.”

The two of us got out of the vehicle and rushed towards the mansion.

In the bamboo thicket stood an old gate that had been left wide open. We slipped through and ran down the stepping stone path towards the mansion entrance.

Finally, the mansion with its tiled roof came into view. A dim light shined through the frosted glass at the door. This wasn’t any haunted mansion—someone was inside.

I looked around for a doorbell, but couldn’t find anything of the sort. I then placed my hand against the door, and it opened with ease. It was unlocked.

“What should we do?” I asked Kyoko.

“We’ve come too far to worry about trespassing.”

I nodded. “Excuse me! Is anyone inside?” I yelled down the hallway.

No response.

Multiple pairs of shoes were lined up in the spacious entryway. Leather loafers, stilettos, straw zori, sandals, and sneakers. At least five people were inside. I was a little surprised by the wide variety of shoes.

“Let’s head in.”

We took off our shoes and started down the hallway. An eclectic collection of ink wash and oil paintings lined the walls. Despite being rumored as a haunted place, the mansion’s interior was stunning and in pristine condition. That was something that all buildings used for Duel Noirs seemed to share—the Committee most likely carried out renovations to ensure all the locations were perfect for their games.

As we wandered down the hall in search of any signs of life, we suddenly heard a voice echo out from further in the mansion.

“Hey, please open the door!”

It was a man’s voice.

Was someone trapped?

Racing towards the source of the voice, we turned down corridor after corridor before stumbling across a spacious living room. Since the sliding doors facing the hallway were all open, we were able to peek inside. A number of books and plastic bottles were stacked on the glass table, implying that someone had been there until recently. The sight reminded me of a scene upon a ghost ship from a horror movie I once saw. A shiver ran down my spine.

We continued until we reached the end of the hallway, where I felt a cold breeze blowing through a slightly ajar door.

This was it.

“Please open up!”

The voice was coming from the other side.

I grabbed the doorknob and opened the door.

“What’s wrong?”

A short hallway extended out, with windows along the right wall. Drain pipes crossed the unfinished concrete floor beneath my feet, and cold air rose up from below.

At the end of the hallway stood a group of men and women, who were gathered around another door.

“Huh? Who’re you guys?!”

A burly man in a Hawaiian shirt pointed a finger at us. He matched the description of the person mentioned by the taxi driver. His messy hair was styled into a pompadour, and he had on a flashy gold necklace and bracelet. He looked like your run-of-the-mill thug, but so much so that it seemed like he was making an intentional fashion statement.

“The hell is goin’ on... This ain’t good...”

He seemed to be at a loss.

“Were you all invited as guests here too?”

The question was posed to us by a woman in a kimono. She had on glasses and sported a bob-cut. Her body was small like a child, but the wise beauty radiating from her face seemed to suggest she was in her late-20s. She looked like a grown-up doll.

“Y-Yeah, that’s right. Sorry for arriving late.” I replied. “Why are all of you gathered around here? Is someone trapped inside?”

“Trapped inside? More like locked himself inside. Look, there’s an old geezer on the other side, but like, he won’t respond no matter how much we call out. Kyahaha.”

A woman with light brown hair in a garish, sparkling sweater answered my question. Her face was caked in makeup. That, along with her miniskirt and intentionally revealed cleavage, made her seem like someone you’d run into at a nightclub.

“The two of you are number six and seven to wander into this mansion today.”

The last to speak was a man over six feet tall with a model-like figure, wearing an expensive suit and sunglasses. He had a bit of an accent, and he looked to be of mixed race. The voice I heard earlier from the hallway belonged to him. He must have been calling out to the person behind the locked door.

“Enough, we gotta grill that guy on the other side. He knows somethin’ ‘bout all this. But the door ain’t even locked, so why can’t we get in? This is bullshit.”

The man was shaking the door. There didn’t seem to be any keyhole, but the door wouldn’t open. Strangely enough, the door seemed to give way slightly when being pulled, but there was some resistance from the inside.

To summarize the situation—

These people had been called to this mansion, and a man had holed up on the other side of the door.

“Did the man inside do something bad?” I asked.

The spectacled woman responded. “No, that isn’t it. We think he might have all of the answers we’re looking for, about why we were called here.”

That answer cleared up some of my confusion.

Most likely, they had come to this mansion after receiving an invitation from the criminal behind this Duel Noir. However, with the sender failing to appear, they were in the dark about why they were called here and what to do next. That was when one man locked himself behind the door, and wouldn’t come out. And so, the others began wondering if that man knew more than he had let on...

At least, that was my theory of things.

“Why won’t this door open? Feels like someone’s pullin’ back on the other side. Hey, open up already!”

“Yui,” Kyoko whispered into my ear. “The challenge card listed rubber bands as an item. Maybe, just maybe...”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

At that moment, a strange noise came from inside the room.

All of us in the hallway quickly fell silent, so as to not drown out the sound.

An object crashing into something else.

A man’s muffled voice.

Something heavy collapsing onto the ground, followed by a faint vibration.

And then silence.

“H-Hey, somethin’ happen in there?” the man in the Hawaiian shirt asked, while vigorously and repeatedly jiggling the door.

“Don’t shake the door like that. Try giving it one strong pull,” Kyoko suggested.

“S-Sure, worth a try.”

The man slicked back his pompadour, grabbed ahold of the doorknob, and channeled all of his strength into the pull.

For a brief moment, a gap formed in the door, large enough to see through to the other side.

“Did you see inside just now?”

“Nah, it’s all dark. Couldn’t see a thing.”

“No, I noticed something just on the other side of the door. Please try pulling the door once again,” the man in the sunglasses requested.

The man in the Hawaiian shirt complied, and tugged the door once again—

“Hmm... I see, it appears that the other side of the door has been sealed with string or some sort of band. Does anyone have scissors or a box cutter with them? If we cut through, we may be able to open the door.”

“Oh, if any old cutter will do...” I took off my backpack and took out a stationery knife from my pencil case.

“This will do. Mr. Yaki, the door, please.”

“Fine, lemme show you a real man's strength!” After rolling up his sleeves and flexing his muscles, he once again grabbed the doorknob. “Get ready! Time to rock ‘n’ roll!”

He pulled the door with all his strength.

“Perfect, keep it like that.”

Following the other man’s instructions, the man in the Hawaiian shirt held the door firmly open.

The man in the sunglasses slipped the knife into the gap and began cutting.

“Got it!”

The next moment, the man in the Hawaiian shirt tumbled backwards onto the floor, flung back by the sudden lack of resistance.

But nobody paid him any mind.

The man in the sunglasses flicked the light switch on, and everyone’s eyes gravitated towards the abnormal sight on the other side of the door.

I let out a gulp.

The pitiful thing my eyes fixated upon, collapsed on the floor in the center of the room—

Was a corpse.

An elderly man in monk's clothing was lying face down.

One glance was enough to figure out he was dead.

After all, a katana had been lodged deep in his back.
