Indrid looks up from his drawing of some mushrooms. The ranger, a man about his age whose little bronze name tag reads “D. Newton”, has the look of someone choosing his words very, very carefully.

“You are this close to me writin you up. And I mean this. Close.” He puts his thumb against his finger.

“I, is this not allowed?” The log he’s sitting on is technically on the trail, just next to it.

“This ain’t the problem. It’s everythin you done since this morning that’s the problem.”

“I-”

“First there was leavin your breakfast trash on the picnic table by the visitor center so chipmunks got into it--it’s real bad for them y’know, makes ‘em too bold--then there was the selfies on off-limits spots, then you had the fu, uh, freakin nerve to be rude to Juno when she asked you to stay in safe areas, you littered left and right, then you left a beer can in the reeds by the plover nestin’ grounds. I don’t even know where to start with that one; you know we don’t allow alcohol in the park. Campgrounds sure, but we don’t want fellas like you gettin drunk and then fallin off a rock. Indrid points in the direction of the beachside campsites, “The Cold Family Reunion can only be begged off so long.” His phone dings, the reminder that it’s his turn to help his aunt with dinner, “speaking of which, I should pack up.” He quickly gathers his supplies, sends the other man a final smile, “thank you for the laugh, Ranger Newton.”

“You’re uh, you’re welcome. And tell your twin to throw his damn trash away.” He smiles as he says this, suggesting a joke, but Indrid resolves to remind Apollo of his manners anyway.

The fog caresses the coastline, hiding the dawn entirely. Indrid pulls his hood up against the chill, the wooden bench and viewing deck damp from the weather. He’s not going back to camp until he’s captured the sight before him; dozens of fishing boats on the dark water, their lights beautiful and soft against the grey world.

Sandy gravel crunches to his right, and then Ranger Newton appears. He keeps glancing at Indrid as he writes something indecipherable on a clipboard.

“I’m the nice one.” Indrid says in response to the quick, searching, looks.

Indrid shrugs, “Not really. I just want to get through this reunion with as little conflict as possible.”

“How’d you end up on this thing? Said you couldn’t get out of it but-”

“I just moved to town a month ago. Turns out this is a place my parents have always wanted to visit. Not enough to see me, mind you, or refrain from criticizing my choice of towns, but enough to host the reunion here so I had no escape. And if I want to eat with the family, I have to spend the night in the camp and not at home. And since money is tight after moving, well..."

The ranger whistles, “Damn, that’s rough. But uh, since you live in town you’ll actually get to see this place in nice weather.”

“I’m looking forward to it.” He shivers, “though I enjoy the cold when I can be in my nice little apartment. In a tent, not so much.”

“If you get a good sleepin bag or good company, gets a lot better.” The ranger smiles, then looks at his notes, “sorry, that ain’t appropriate talk around a visitor.”

Indrid meets his green eyes, “If you have recommendations for either, I’m all ears.”

A gust of wind carries salt spray all the way to the platform, Indrid shivering as it mists his glasses.

“Here” the ranger holds out his hnd, “I gotta go open the visitor center; nice and warm in there.”

“Sure, won’t kill me to check on the tide measures while I’m out here.” He tips his hat and soon Indrid sees him winding down a path to the beach. Eleven minutes later he’s back, telling Indrid about a huge starfish he saw.

On the walk to the visitor center, he learns the “D” on his nametag is for “Duck,” that he’s a transplant from West Virginia, and that they’re actually the same age. When Indrid explains that he’s a tattoo artist who sells his drawings on the side.

“You’ll appreciate this, then” Duck bends down to roll up his pant leg. Indrid appreciates the view and the well executed geometric tree tattoo on his ankle.

“Juno and I got ‘em together. Had to go with the ankle because I already got some on my arms. Can’t show those off right now though.”

“My, my, Ranger Newton, you’ll flash a scandalous ankle at a guest but not take him to the gun show?”

Duck laughs, the sound like the mating call of a strange tropical bird; absurd and enchanting.

“Glad you’re in town to stay, Indrid. Think you’re the kind of fella I’d like to get to know.”

Maybe he’s being childish. It’s not wrong for Apollo to say he’s making their father proud, that he’s successful, that he’s a golden boy of his field.

It’s just obnoxious for him to do this the one time their extended family expressed Indrid’s professional accomplishments. With that smile, the one Indrid knows for a damn fact he had fixed, that tone, that, that….

That voice sounds familiar.

He reverses course, takes the path he passed by that points towards the amphitheater. What he gets is more a firepit with a small stage, but standing at the center and addressing fascinated families is Duck.

Indrid sits on the rickety bench furthest from the stage, lets Ducks explanations of night blooming plants and the creatures that pollinate them drown out the echoes of family dinner. When the program ends and the parents shepherd their children off with instructions for bedtime and brushing teeth Indrid stays, not ready to leave but not intending to attract Duck’s attention.

He gets it anyway.

“Enjoy the talk?” Duck stays two steps down from him, rests a foot up on the bench, “this one is always real popular; when it gets warm, the little animal rehab place south of town brings education animals in. Y’know, bats and owls, stuff like that.”

“I’ll have to come back to see them.” The thought of seeing bats up close excites him, but he’s too tired to sell the emotion.

Duck frowns, “You okay?”

Indrid shakes his head, tells him about the constant comments, the threat of living forever as the family disappointment, a threat he can deal with until he’s around them all. Then he’s right back to being seventeen and afraid of failing them.

“....Apollo’s always been the golden boy, ruthless and goal focused like our father. He always knows just what to say to get under my skin and dig out the scar tissue,” Indrid sighs, “All I wanted tonight was to roast marshmallows and go to bed early.”

The ranger moved from the steps to the bench beside him as he told his story. Now, Duck looks at him, smile more soothing than the thrum of the distant waves, “I got an idea. Guessin’ you don’t gotta tell your family where you’re goin, right?”

“No, most of them will assume I’m off sulking and Apollo will hope I’ve fallen off a cliff.”

“Then leave ‘em to be their shitty selves and come home with me. Uh, not, not-not like that, fuck, like what you’re thinkin, uh. Fuck. What I mean is; I got a fireplace and some marshmallows. You want in?”

Indrid watches the dying fire flicker of the curves of his face, thinks back on the last week. The ranger has been a frequent companion, brings him hot cocoa from the little cafe and tells him where he’ll be for chunks of the day in case Indrid needs a break from his family. Last night, all Indrid could think about was wanting Duck to be in the tent beside him.

“Absolutely.”

On the drive over, Indrid points out his apartment complex and Duck points out the best places to eat and the cheapest laundromats. His house is tiny, looks like it was built when the town was a logging hub and not a tourist destination.

“Make yourself at home, it’ll take me a sec to get the fire goin’--uhuh, Taco, stop tryin’ to open that cabinet.” He hoists a yowling, blonde ball of fur on the couch. The cat directs a suspicious look Indrid’s way and then settles on top of the pile of blankets.

“You a s’more man?” Duck calls from the kitchen.

“No, thank you. I prefer my sugar in a single bite.”

“You eat marshmallows in one bite? I’m always worried I’ll choke.”

“I have an accommodating mouth.” Indrid smirks when Duck audibly drops the bag. He’s not always the best with social cues, but if the way Duck kept brushing their hands together on the center armrest in his car is any indication, the ranger is trying to pick him up.

Once the fire is going Duck sits on the rug, patting the spot to his left. Indrid joins him. Caramelizing sugar and increasingly sleepy laughter soon fills the air. Neither of them keep their knees from touching, and Duck keeps dropping his head to Indrid’s shoulder when he giggles. The whole scene is so heavenly Indrid isn’t paying attention to their marshmellow consumption. He reaches into the empty bag and makes a disappointed noise.

“Damn, we really went through ‘em.” He catches Indrid’s eye with a playful grin, “you still cravin’ sugar?”

Indrid licks his lips, “Yes.”

Duck cups his cheek, guiding him into a sleepy, close-mouthed kiss, brushing their noses together when he pulls back to murmur, “That do the trick?”

“Hmmmmm?” Indrid cocks his head, “no.”

The other man guffaws as Indrid pulls him down on top of him, kissing him happily and wiggling his hips when Duck digs his fingers into his hair. His own hands migrate under Duck’s shirts, finding his body just as warm and wonderful as he hoped.

He nips Duck’s lower lip. The ranger growls and Indrid is no longer tired.

“Care to see just how accommodating my mouth can be?”

Duck rolls them twice so they’re a safe distance from the fire, “Hell yeah.”

“Mmm, yes, I was rather undutiful.” Indrid spots a figure checking campsite permits, who stealthily blows him a kiss, “but at this moment in time, I don’t particularly care.”

Drawing his eyebrows together, Stiles’ gaze darts back and forth between the information laid out in front of him. There has to be something. An indicator. A common denominator. A possible pattern. Something the others don’t share. It can’t be nothing. It can’t be. There’s always something. What made Theo survive? What did he have that others don’t have? It can’t be the heart. Unless it’s his sister’s heart. Would that make a difference? Would that – he grabs Theo’s file and nudges his thumb against the bottom of the page. This looks like someone has written something on the page above it, but then scratched it out. 

With narrow eyes, Stiles shifts the file a little in the dim light of the desk lamp. Is that a question mark at the end? He can’t decipher this bullshit. Come on. What the fuck is that? He raises the file closer to his face. As if that would help. Fuck this. Stiles drops the file again. Pen and paper. Pen and paper. The office was left in a rush. Even Jonathan Raeken’s files have been left behind. That means there has to be pen and paper somewhere around here. 

Desk drawers. 

Stiles grabs the first one and yanks it open. Or rather, he tries to. 

“What the hell?” He pulls at the drawer again, but it doesn’t move. It’s the middle of the fucking night. If this thing is stuck – huffing out a breath, Stiles crouches down. It’s not stuck. He brushes his thumb over a small silver lock. Who the hell locks his desk drawers when they’re not a fucking movie villain? Stiles doubts there is going to be a key anywhere around here. If anything, the key is what Theo’s dad will have taken with him. 

Or hidden really well. 

Hm. 

He straightens again, checking the desk. Maybe – a floorboard creaks and Stiles snaps his head up, staring at the figure standing in the dark hallway. For the flicker of a second, his heart hammers against his chest. For the flicker of a second, he thinks it’s Donovan. Because he knows it has to happen. Because he knows it will happen eventually. Their story isn’t over yet. 

“Stiles,” Theo says with an undertone that doesn’t bode well. Of course, it’s Theo. Staring at Donovan’s file for this long has made him a bit twitchy. “What the hell are you doing up?” With his hair tousled from sleep and wearing nothing but his boxer briefs, Theo turns into a serious distraction. Nobody should be allowed to look that good. 

“I couldn’t sleep.” With a small smile, Stiles raises Donovan's file. “So, I tried to do something useful.” Running a hand through his hair, he drops the file onto the desk again and draws his eyebrows together. “It was a failed attempt, but it was an attempt.” He crosses his arms, studying Theo, trying to place him in this room when he was a kid, when he came in here, maybe asking his dad if he wants to play, maybe helping his dad with his research. But for some reason, he can’t see little Theo in his father’s office. 

Theo steps closer, placing a finger on the paperclip. He doesn’t pull the file away from him, but something shifts in his expression Stiles can’t properly place. “Why do you have my file?” Okay, Stiles knows how that looks. It’s entirely possible Theo thinks that Stiles is snooping around, that he’s trying to figure out as much about Theo as he can without him knowing about it. 

That’s not the case. 

Stiles closes the file and pushes it towards Theo, who doesn’t grab it, just crosses his arms. “You said Donovan might have been a success if I hadn’t killed him. I thought maybe I’d find something you two have in common.”

Theo’s features relax a little. “Any luck?”

“No.” Stiles shakes his head and moves around the desk. “You have your sister’s heart, and Donovan has nothing more than a skin transplant. I thought maybe the others didn’t make it because they weren’t chimera enough, but … I don’t know.” With a sigh, he works his fingers through his hair. 

Theo doesn’t reply immediately. Only slowly, he drags his eyes away from his own file to look at him. “I don’t think there is something,” he says, tapping a finger against his bicep, and Stiles has to fight the urge to touch him. “It’s just like the bite. It either takes, or it doesn’t.” The only difference is that the bite is less of a death sentence than being transformed into a chimera. Well, at least Stiles thinks that’s the case. Jackson, Isaac, Erica, Boyd, Nolan, and so many others have survived, yet everyone the Dread Doctors try to turn dies; everyone except Theo. 

“That’s not at all satisfying.” Neither is having to play the waiting game, but that’s about the extent of what they can do. 

Theo shrugs. “Donovan was most likely stronger than the others.” Yeah. Maybe. They don’t actually know if he would’ve made it without Stiles accidentally killing him. “That’s all there is to it.” This answer isn’t any better than the one before. It really isn’t. 

Groaning quietly, Stiles covers his face with his hands. He feels the crushing hopelessness that can only come late in the middle of the night when insomnia hits you like a freight train. He takes a deep breath. “How are we going to do this?” 

“Exactly like you said.” Theo grabs his hands and gently pries them away from his face, waiting patiently until Stiles meets his eye. “We will train you and Lydia so that we can get to the chimeras before the Dread Doctors, and we will keep doing that until we find a way to kill them once and for all.” 

Stiles nods. It makes sense, and they really don’t have any other choice. It is what they have to do, even if he wishes they had a better plan than that. Something that’s more efficient. “I just – I thought that maybe I could narrow it down, predict a pattern. Something, anything really. But yeah,” he mutters, smiling a little, “you’re right.” 

“Good,” Theo says and pulls him away from the desk, “back to bed.”

“I’m not tired.”

Theo stares at him. “It’s three in the morning.”

“I’m not tired, Theo.” 

“What’s going on?” He draws his eyebrows together, studying Stiles’ face in confusion. “Is this about what Jackson said?” 

“What Jackson … oh.” Stiles doesn’t know if he should be embarrassed or not that Theo actually believes Jackson’s words are haunting him enough that he cannot sleep with Theo half-naked next to him. Well, to be perfectly honest, he’d be much happier if that were the reason for his sleepless nights. “No, that doesn’t have anything to do with that. It just happens sometimes.” He smiles, brushing invisible dust off Theo’s cheek. “You never know what you get with me. Insomnia, nightmares, or the one in a million chance of me sleeping like a normal person. It’s a lottery, really.” 

Theo scowls at him. “That’s not funny.” The way he says it makes abundantly clear that he’s definitely not a fan of Stiles’ humor. Not even a little.

Stiles swallows drily. It sucks. It really does. He’s been dealing with his fucked up sleep-schedule for so long that he’s given up on worrying about it. The last thing he needs is Theo being on edge because of that. Still, he probably should’ve known that Theo isn’t going to be amused by him joking about his insomnia. His father hardly finds it funny. It was fucking stupid of him. Instead of trying to lighten the mood, he probably should’ve told Theo about it beforehand. Especially in their current situation with Donovan and the Dread Doctors roaming the town. 

“Sorry,” Stiles replies, running a hand over his forehead, staring at his feet. “Sorry, I didn’t expect you’d care so much.” The moment the words are out of his mouth, Stiles regrets them. That sounded so wrong. That sounded exactly like he didn’t want it to sound because it’s not what he meant. Not at all. 

“What?” Theo asks, and when he steps away, it feels like a slap to the face. 

“Fuck,” Stiles curses, pressing his hands to his forehead again. Even though he may not be tired enough to sleep, his brain certainly has stopped working properly a while ago. “That’s not – I didn’t mean it like that.” He sits down on the edge of the desk, looking up at Theo almost helplessly. Of course, he’d fuck up by saying something stupid. He sighs, swallows around the lump in his throat, and grabs Theo’s hand, pulling him close. His stomach contorts painfully when Theo remains completely passive. Even his face is unreadable. He completely shut down. This is not how this is supposed to be. “It’s just … yesterday, after the hallucination. I – your face. You were so terrified. It scared the shit out of me.” Stiles grabs his hand tighter, cups Theo’s neck with the other. This passive Theo makes him anxious. He wants him to react; he needs him to react, to say something. Part of him wants to kiss him, end the conversation, distract Theo, but he knows better than to do that. It’s not going to get them anywhere. Eventually, they’ll return to his conversation. Eventually, Stiles’ words will bite him in the ass, so it’s better to get them out of the way now. 

Theo scoffs. “I’m so sorry I scared you.”

“Don’t –” Fucking hell, learn how to talk, Stilinski. Stiles takes a deep breath and squeezes Theo’s hand. “I have never seen you so scared is all.” 

“What did you expect?” Theo retorts, and even though he’s not physically pulling away, he’s still got his walls up and tight around him. “You know what it means when a chimera starts bleeding mercury.” When he shakes his head, Theo’s expression cracks open. He looks awfully vulnerable in the dim lighting of the desk lamp, and it hurts. It hurts so bad to see him like this. “Not a single experiment came back from that.” His grip around Stiles’ hand toes the line of being painful, but he doesn’t care. Not right now. He doesn’t know how he’d react if Theo let go and walked away, and that thought scares him even more. He’s not going slow. He’s in way over his head. Stiles is already more terrified of never seeing Theo again than he is of facing Donovan. “I thought I was losing you.”

Stiles sucks in a breath, and he pulls him close, wrapping his arms around his shoulders. Theo presses against him, arms tight around his waist, fingers digging into his hips. Swallowing again, Stiles kisses his temple. “Come on, Misiu.” Theo relaxes against him, turns his head just enough to give Stiles easier access to his mouth. Smiling, Stiles presses their lips together for a moment. Breathing seems a little easier again, and when he breaks the kiss, he doesn’t pull away. He remains as close as possible, still smiling. “You’re not going to get rid of me that easily. Bad weeds grow –”

“Stop,” Theo interrupts him with a snarl and pulls away from him, stepping out of reach. It’s like a slap to the face. Stiles wishes he would’ve never opened his mouth. How could he fuck up so bad in so little time? “Stop turning this into a fucking joke. I thought you were dying, okay? Dying, Stiles.” He takes a breath, curling his hands into tight fists at his sides. “And then I wake up, and you’re gone. I thought –”

It’s now that Stiles realizes what he should’ve known from the very beginning. Theo doesn’t go slow. Not necessarily because he doesn’t want to. He just can’t. Theo goes from zero to a hundred, disregarding logic and common sense. He’s wired like that. Always has been. When they met in Little League, it wasn’t any different. Theo declared him his friend in a matter of minutes. Stiles remembers it clearly, remembers how Theo defended him against one of the older boys, telling him that they're not allowed to mess with his friend. Then he pronounced him his best friend only a few days later, after school, when Theo’s parents wanted him to come home, but Theo wanted to go skateboarding with his ‘best friend.’ That’s how Theo used to be. Why should it be any different now? 

Seeing Theo this vulnerable, this afraid of potentially losing him, breaks Stiles’ heart. “I’m sorry,” he whispers, and he is so fucking sorry that he’s such a fucking idiot for believing the Dread Doctors changed Theo more than they truly have. As broken as he may be, Theo is still there. And here he is trying to cover up the magnitude of his own feelings with bad jokes. Humor is a defense mechanism Stiles can’t get rid of, and he thought it would be okay. “Fuck, I’m so sorry.” He never expected to hurt Theo so much. “Please, you have to talk to me. I knew something was up when I saw your face, but I didn’t know this. Theo, please.” Stiles reaches out for him again, and, after a moment, Theo steps forward. 

“I can’t lose you,” he says, taking his hand, yet keeping a distance. It sucks. It sucks so much. Holding his hand isn’t enough. It’s not even close to enough. Stiles wants Theo to pull him close. He wants Theo to wrap his hand around his ankle even though he still has no fucking clue why that’s a thing. But it comforts him, and it comforts Theo as well.  

“You won’t.”

Theo grimaces. “Don’t say that.” 

“What do you want me to say?” Stiles asks, drawing his eyebrows together in confusion. What else is there to say? 

Theo’s fingers twitch slightly, and Stiles can’t help but hold on tighter. He’s terrified of Theo walking away from him right now. Nothing good ever happens when someone walks away during an argument. “I want you to be reasonable,” he says after a moment, his voice darkened with something impossible to pinpoint, “the Dread Doctors will want you more than ever after your little display from yesterday. Your dad, Jordan, and Melissa are practically waiting for me to fuck up.”

“They’re a bit overprotect –”

But Theo ignores him and continues talking as if Stiles didn’t say anything. “Your powers can kill you. Brett has this weird connection to you.” 

Stiles snorts. “Unwanted.”

“And Tracy,” Theo says, again pretending as if he hasn’t heard a single word, “isn’t completely wrong about what she said. I’m not like the others.”

“I know,” Stiles whispers, squeezing his hand in what he hopes is reassuring. “You’re not, but –”

For the third time in a row, Theo completely disregards his words. It’s starting to piss him off. “And you always go back to Scott.” 

Now that’s a punch straight to the gut. Stiles lets go of Theo's hand, almost flinching away, and pushes himself off the desk. Anger and hurt clash inside him, claw at his skin. Stiles doesn’t know if he wants to cry or scream. “To sum it all up,” he says, hating the sound of his breath catching in his throat, hating the little tremble to his voice, hating that Theo keeps looking at him as if Stiles has to understand where he’s coming from, “you think I’ll dump you the first chance I get. Wow.” His voice cracks over the word. He clenches his hands into fists, trying to ignore how empty they feel. “Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

Theo reaches out for him, but Stiles steps away without looking at him. It’s just a single step, but it’s killing him. He doesn’t want to keep a distance between them. He hates to move out of reach, but he doesn’t know how to deal with being close to Theo when he doesn’t believe him, when he doesn’t trust him. “The odds aren’t exactly in our favor.” 

Stiles can feel his blunt nails dig into the palm of his hands. “Okay, Effie. We’re not about to fight for our lives in the Hunger Games.” Another tremble. Another joke. Sometimes he wishes he could shut his emotions off just like Theo can. But he can’t. He’s never been good at hiding what he feels, no matter how hard he tries. “Do you wanna tell me something? Why we’re dating, for example.” 

“That’s not what I said.”

“No?” Stiles asks sharply. “You just gave me five fucking reasons for why you doubt me and this relationship in general.” This is fucking bullshit. 

Theo grabs his wrist, and he holds onto it when Stiles tries to pull away again. He hates everything about this. He hates everything about this so much. Theo yanks him close. For fuck’s sake. Grinding his teeth, Stiles tries to shove him off, but Theo basically brushes him off and pushes him up against the desk as if he’s afraid Stiles is about to run off. He’s not going to run off, he never would, but he’s not good with being close to someone while being pissed off. “I gave you five ways I could lose you.” 

That doesn’t help because it’s still Stiles who leaves. He narrows his eyes. “Same difference,” he snaps, placing his hands on Theo's chest. He doesn’t shove him away. He doesn’t pull him close. All in all, Stiles still doesn’t know what to do or how to feel. He’s hurt and disappointed and angry, and he can’t handle this. Not right now. Why is he making this so hard? How does he manage to make him want to slap some sense into him on the one handand tell him that everything is going to be fine on the other hand? Why does Theo have to be this infuriating in every sense of the word? It’s driving him insane. 

“No, it’s not. I don’t doubt you or us, but that doesn’t mean I’m not terrified of losing you.”  Theo cups his neck, thumbs brushing against his jaw.

Stiles lets out a breath, feeling his anger leave him all at once, and all that because of a single touch. The way Theo knows him should be terrifying, yet Stiles can’t help but find it comforting even though this asshole is the very reason he’s completely overwhelmed with everything at the moment. “Theo,” he whispers, and he wants to add something else, but he doesn’t know what. 

“Don’t say I won’t lose you.”

“I’m just supposed to say nothing?” 

Theo licks his lips, moving his hands to the back of Stiles’ head, and presses their foreheads together. It's scarily intimate, so much more intimate than Stiles has ever been with someone. He's not used to this wave of emotions. He's not used to too much and not enough. He's not used to right, and he still doesn't know what to say. So, he doesn’t say anything. Instead, he kisses him, pressing their lips together urgently and desperately, and hopes that Theo understands ‘you’re not going to lose me’ even if he doesn’t believe him.

Stiles inches closer, shudders when Theo grabs his hips, pulls him flat against his body. Fingers press against his skin, and Stiles can’t help but notice how naked Theo really is. There’s so much skin. Warm skin. Soft skin. Stiles bites Theo’s bottom lip, shudders when he hears a quiet groan in return. Again, Theo’s fingers twitch, as if he’s fighting an urge. Stiles curls his fingers into his hair. 

Theo kisses him back with no less intensity than before. Withoutany warning, he hoists Stiles up and throws him over his shoulder. 

“What the fuck?” he asks, slapping Theo’s ass, which, honestly, looks exceptionally great from his point of view. 

“We’re going to bed,” Theo tells him and switches off the desk lamp, patting Stiles’ thighs with his free hand. Rude. Really, really fucking rude. He can’t just crudely interrupt them and decide if they go to bed or not. But since Theo is Theo, resistance is futile. They will have a fun time ahead of them, considering that they’re both as stubborn as a brick wall. Theo can’t just pretend that this conversation is over either. Because it’s not. It’s just postponed because it’s the middle of the night, and Stiles has a hunch that a tired Theo is most definitely even more stubborn than an awake one. 

He squawks indignantly when Theo tosses him onto the bed like a sack of potatoes, but he doesn’t have the chance to even think about complaining. In an instant, Theo’s right on top of him, pressing their lips together greedier than ever before. Stiles closes his eyes, sucking Theo’s bottom lip between his teeth again just to hear that noise again. Theo doesn’t disappoint. His moan makes Stiles feel all kinds of things; most of them fantastic. He can’t even imagine how sinful he’ll sound during sex, but he definitely wants to figure that out. He wants to hear Theo moan his name. That’s something that belongs to him and him alone.

It certainly doesn’t belong to Tracy.

Stiles wants to experience everything with Theo for the first time. His firsts, at least. If they even are his firsts to begin with. Fuck. Where the hell did that thought come from? He doesn’t need that right now. He doesn’t want that right now. What he wants is Theo. What he needs is Theo to just never stop kissing him.

But he does. 

Fucking hell.  

Theo rolls off him, but he can’t ignore that there’s the tiniest bit of relief. However,Stiles doesn’t know if it’s Theo stopping in general, or Theo stopping before Stiles could inevitably pull the emergency brake. Because he would. Stiles can tell that he would’ve done it, and that’s probably saying everything he needs to know right now. 

With a sigh, Stiles rolls onto his stomach and kisses Theo’s shoulder. “I’m sorry.” 

“It’s fine.” Theo curls an arm around him, face hidden in the shadows, impossible to make out. “I promised Parrish to bring you back virginal anyway. Makes it easier if you’re not into it.” His tone is hard to read without seeing his face, and it’s impossible to figure out what led to Theo saying this in the first place by his body language alone. He’s just lying there. It’s hard to tell if he’s even looking at him.

Stiles can’t decide what stings more, the words or the way he said it. He doesn’t even understand why Theo would think that. “Oh, no,” he says because he needs Theo to know that this is far from the truth. Everything is so much more complicated. “I’m into it. I’m very much into it. I’m –”

Snorting out a laugh, Theo covers Stiles’ mouth with his hand. He seems to be genuinely unbothered by this, and Stiles honestly doesn’t know how to feel about that either. Part of him wants Theo to be disappointed. Part of him wants Theo to just kiss him again. But for the most part, he was relieved that Theo just went with and accepted it. Still, things would be a hell of a lot easier if his fucking brain managed to stay in the present instead of working through past issues at the most inopportune moments. 

“I could smell that,” Theo says, shifting close enough that his grin is just barely visible in the dimly moonlit room. “I could also smell a sudden rush of nerves.”

Stiles scowls. Fucking supernatural creatures and their stupid senses. With a huff, Stiles props his chin on his hand. “Hey,” he says, reaching out to cover Theo’s nose, “it’s perfectly normal to be nervous. It’s my first time, after all.” Stiles pinches his nose then pulls his hand away and places it above Theo’s heart. They’re so far down the rabbit hole, Stiles wonders if there’s a way to go slow. He trusts Theo with his life, much more than he probably should, and knowing that Theo knows so much about him, that Stiles can tell him everything without being afraid of being judged makes it easier to say things. “It’s stupid, isn’t it?” 

“That you’re nervous?” 

Drawing little circles on Theo’s chest, Stiles simply nods. 

“No, it’s not. Why do you think it’s stupid?”

Stiles rolls onto his back, tugging at his shirt absentmindedly. “I’m ready to run headfirst into danger, but sex makes me nervous.” He shrugs and scrunches up his face. It didn’t use to be like that. Not at all. He would’ve slept with Heather in her wine cellar. Yes, he was a bit overwhelmed, but he didn’t feel as if his mind was going a hundred miles an hour. That only started after Eichen House. 

Theo rolls onto his side, propping his head on his arm. "Sex can mess you up. Look at Tracy."

"Tracy is in love with you," Stiles reminds him with a roll of his eyes, "or at least, she thinks she is. That's not comparable  –" he trails off and presses his lips together, staring at the small ray of moonlight creeping through the curtains. 

"To?" Theo draws his eyebrows together. 

Stiles pulls his shoulders up, fighting the urge to smooth the lines between Theo’s brows.  “You know I was in Eichen, right?” He licks his lips, not really waiting for Theo to answer. “I don’t remember everything that happened there. However, I do remember that I was in the basement with Malia."

Theo traces his jaw. "And you don't know what happened next."

"No."

"Did you feel any different?"

"I was hopped up on drugs that were supposed to keep me awake, sedated, severely sleep-deprived, and possessed by a 1000-year-old fox spirit," Stiles mutters, pressing the balls of his hands to his eyes. "I don't think I would've noticed if I had felt any different." Talking about it makes him want to crawl under the covers and never return, get high or wasted; he wants to do whatever it takes to make the memories leave. But that's not how the world works. Not his, at least. 

Theo leans over him, propping himself up. His face is mostly covered in shadows, only a stripe of moonlight illuminates his right cheek and eye. “Did you ask her about what happened?” 

Avoiding Theo’s eyes, Stiles shakes his head.

“Why not?” 

Stiles pulls his shoulders up. “I guess I don’t wanna know if my first time happened in the basement of a mental institution.” For a moment, he looks up and studies Theo’s face above him, wondering what he thinks about all of this. He shifts a little and clears his throat. “Although this body technically hasn’t seen any action.” Stiles opts for a grin before hastily adding, “action as in sex. It saw enough action for a lifetime.” 

Theo narrows his eyes. “Can you stop acting like everything is a joke to you.”

“It’s a coping mechanism.” Stiles licks his lips, then bites down on his bottom one. He doesn’t want to fight with Theo. Not about this. Not about anything. He wants to enjoy the rest of the night. Well, he wanted to fall asleep and wake up next to him, but that was already a lot to ask, and of course his brain worked completely against him. Now, it’s getting ridiculous. 

Huffing out a breath, Theo leans down. “It sucks,” he notes, dragging his lips over Stiles’ jaw and down to his pulsepoint. Fucking hell, that alone shouldn’t feel as good as it does. “Is that why you never had sex with Malia?” Theo paints the word against his throat.

Asshole. 

“No,” Stiles says in a low voice, swallowing heavily, “I didn’t feel comfortable with her. Do we – do we have to talk about that now?” With Theo on top of him, his mouth on his throat, his skin warm, he doesn't want to talk about anything.

Theo sucks a bit of skin between his teeth, releasing it almost instantly. Stiles bites his bottom lip, fighting a gasp. Leaving marks really is the last thing any of them should do. Especially on his neck. “Do you feel comfortable with me?” Theo asks before pressing his mouth against the previously abused spot. 

“I trust you,” Stiles whispers and closes his eyes. With his right hand, he tugs on the sheets once then places it on the back of Theo’s neck. 

A chuckle reaches his ears. “That’s not what I asked.” A warm hand slips underneath his t-shirt, pushing it up, and finds its resting place on his stomach. Theo brushes his thumb over Stiles’ skin, lips curled into a grin when he drags them down. “Just because you trust me,” he continues, grabbing Stiles’ hand on his neck, and intertwines their fingers, “doesn’t mean you feel comfortable having sex with me.” 

Stiles squeezes his hand and holds his breath when Theo moves down his body, keeping eye contact with him the whole time. Is this a test? He’s trying to prove a point, isn’t he? Oh god. This is fine. This is great. Stiles will not make a complete ass out of himself for once in his life. “I just don’t want to rush this.” 

Again, Theo chuckles. His hot breath feels better on his skin than it has any right to feel. “Absolutely nothing about us is rushed.” 

“We’re hardly official,” Stiles reminds him, watching breathlessly as Theo pushes his shirt up further. His hand is warm, fingertips brushing over his skin in a way that sets his body on fire. It’s less the touch than the intimacy, the way Theo isn’t taking for granted that he can touch him, but that he explores Stiles’ body and his limits one inch at a time. He licks his lips, swallows drily. “I want us to work,” Stiles whispers, finding himself in the awkward position of having a much harder time to breathe than a few seconds ago. He wants it so bad. He wants it more than anything in the world. It should scare the hell out of him, but it doesn’t. Stiles never expected to be in this situation, to have the kind of love his parents had. His mother always said she loved his father because he made sense. He never understood what she meant by that, but he’s finally beginning to get it. 

“And you think sex is getting in the way of that?” Theo asks, brushing his lips over his stomach. It’s the ghost of a touch, but it still causes goosebumps to spread all over Stiles’ body. If this is already so intense, then how in the hell is he supposed to survive sex? Theo shouldn’t be allowed to be this good at playing his body like a fiddle, and his body is clearly along for the ride. More than just a little, because with every single touch, blood is flowing in the entirely wrong direction.

Stiles sucks in a breath, free hand curling into the short strands of Theo’s hair. He doesn’t tug at it, doesn’t pull or push him away. It just feels like the best place for his hand right now since he doesn’t have any idea what to do with it otherwise. Not when every single one of Theo’s touches goes straight to his dick. “It sounds stupid when you say it out loud,” he says eventually, and his voice is stuck somewhere between a whisper and a moan because Theo chose that exact moment to suck his skin between his teeth and fuck. 

His heart jumps into his throat when Theo parts his lips and drags his mouth down until his chin almost hits the waistband of Stiles’ sweatpants. That’s one of the best and worst places Theo could possibly end up being. He can feel Theo grinning against his stomach, can feel his elbow dangerously close to his dick. That asshole knows exactly what he’s doing. Stiles’ throat goes dry, and he closes his eyes. He shifts a little, highly aware of his dick rubbing against his boxer briefs. Fuck. It’s impossible not to  focus on the warm mouth against his skin, the cool fingers on his chest, the way Theo squeezes Stiles' hand. It’s too much and not enough.

“Guess I’ll have to seduce the stupid out of you,” Theo muses, lips painting every single word against his skin. His voice is quiet, but Stiles can’t help but notice how labored Theo’s breathing has gotten. Fuck. Fuck. He’s so far out of his depth.  

Stiles squirms, fully aware that Theo doesn't miss what's going on, but keeps his mouth and hand on his stomach regardless. It’s not making this any easier. Stiles shifts again, biting down on his bottom lip. He’s not sure what he wants, and Theo’s fucking mouth and his goddamn hand, brushing ever so innocently up and down his side, make everything so much worse. By which he means better. By which he means – fuck, he doesn’t know. 

But he has to make a decision. 

He doesn’t want to make a decision. 

Theo bites down on his hip, and Stiles gasps, cursing under his breath when that sensation paves a path straight to his dick. Chuckling again, Theo kisses the abused spot. 

“I don’t know what’s so funny,” Stiles whispers, tightening his fingers in the short strands.

Theo squeezes his hand again as he moves back up. A grin tugs at the corners of his mouth when he leans down, capturing Stiles' lips in a kiss. His free hand moves to his cheek, soft fingers pressing against his skin. If he had the chance, Stiles would just never stop kissing him. But Theo pulls away far too soon, kissing the corner of his mouth, his nose, his forehead. “You’re hopeless,” he tells him, amusement dancing in his voice. 

“I prefer doomed.” 

Groaning quietly, Theo drops onto the bed next to him. “Go to sleep.” 

Stiles shifts a little, scrunching up his face. “If you think any of that helped me become more tired, you’re sorely mistaken.” 

For a second, Theo doesn’t say anything, and although Stiles doubts he fell asleep within a moment's notice, he cranes his neck a little to make sure. Flashing his eyes, Theo rolls back around. He grabs him and, completely ignoring Stiles’ indignant squawk, wrestles him onto his side as well. “Sleep,” he mutters against his forehead, dragging the blanket over them. The distance between the lower halves of their bodies is more than obvious, and Stiles can’t stop noticing it. 

“Theo?” 

“I will smother you with a pillow,” Theo grunts. 

Stiles laughs quietly, brushing his thumb along the nape of his neck. “Thanks.” 

Theo sighs and kisses his forehead one last time. “Just go to sleep.”

Stiles runs his fingers through his hair, yawning. Although cuddling with Theo didn’t exactly help him fall asleep, he must’ve gotten one or two hours of sleep in. Which is fine, although he’d rather have stayed awake. Sometimes sleeping only a little makes it worse than not sleeping at all. Still, he needs coffee. Lots of coffee. 

Rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand, Stiles dumps the last pancake on the plate and puts them in the oven. Everybody should be up soon unless they’re all lazy asses who wait until the last second to crawl out of bed. Well, he’s not their father. Maybe he has the time to check on Theo’s file again. Something’s written down on the bottom of that page. He wonders if Theo knows. Has he been weird because of that? No. Theo wouldn’t keep anything from him. 

And he shouldn’t do it without talking to Theo first. It might be some personal information. Maybe he even got rid of it himself. 

“Oh, for fuck’s sake.”

Stiles turns around, staring at Tracy standing in the doorway, lips pressed into a thin line. He doesn’t need to be a nogitsune to notice the anger radiating off her. It would be easy to yell at her, but he’s made the conscious decision not to be a fucking asshole to her. He’s trying to somehow fix this enough so they won’t butt heads every single time they see each other. “I made pancakes,” Stiles tells her, gesturing to the oven, “and coffee.” 

“No.” 

“It’s an offer.”

Tracy bares her teeth and clenches her fists. It takes her a second before she manages to get her features back under control. “You don’t have to be so fucking nice to me. We’re not going to be friends.” 

That’s not really his end goal. Not at all. He doesn’t want to be her friend, and he doesn’t expect it either, especially not with her crush on Theo. Stiles wouldn’t have wanted to be friends with Jackson back then, so he can’t blame her. Not even a little bit. “I don’t want to be your friend.” 

She smiles sharply. “Then stop being nice to me.” 

“Just because I don’t want to be your friend, doesn’t mean I can’t treat you with common decency.” Fighting all the time isn’t helping them at all. Sure, Stiles might not stay the night all too much, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be over a lot. They have tons of research and training to do, and Stiles actually enjoys hanging out with the others. 

Tracy scoffs. “Don’t think I’ll return the favor.” 

Stiles isn’t stupid. That girl went above and beyond to impress Theo, disregarding every shred of pride she should have had instead of walking away. She didn't, which is more than telling. Tracy is in over her head. Stiles can’t even blame her. After all, Theo has that effect on people, and he knows exactly how to get what he wants, even though that completely bores him. Theo needs to get what he wants; however, he needs the chase just as much. It’s complicated, and Stiles wonders if part of Theo wanting him has to do with his ability to say no.

Holding her gaze, Stiles crosses his arms. “I don’t expect anything else from you.” 

“Fuck you,” Tracy says, crossing the room, and shoves him against the counter. 

His missing daggers are prominent, but Stiles didn’t need them here – or so he thought. Despite all his worries, he constantly manages to ignore the threat right in front of him. Tracy is dangerous. She killed her father to play along in Theo’s little game, killed him to impress a boy who’s never felt anything for her. Stiles doesn’t want to call her unhinged, but she’s certainly damaged enough to go all out. As much as Stiles wants to wash his hands of it, he’s responsible for this as well. At least to a certain degree, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to let her push him around. 

“I told you there’s breakfast,” Stiles reminds her in a low voice, slapping her hand away. “What the fuck is your problem?” 

“You are my problem.” Well, that answer was to be expected. 

“Tracy,” Josh groans, stepping into the kitchen, and tosses his backpack in a corner, “for fuck’s sake.” 

Baring her teeth, Tracy shoves Stiles against the counter for good measure. The impact hurts. Pain shoots from his lower back in pretty much every single direction, but Stiles tries his hardest to keep his face neutral. She doesn’t need this kind of satisfaction. “This isn’t over,” Tracy snarls, spins around, and leaves the room with her head held high. 

Stiles doesn’t doubt that this will only be over once one of them is gone, but even if he were to leave – which is so not going to happen - nothing will change for her. Theo won’t magically fall in love with her just because Stiles isn’t there any longer. That’s not how this works, and Stiles highly doubts she will be happy with sex forever. 

“Don’t worry about her,” Josh says, waving his hand around dismissively. “She’ll get over it eventually.” 

That’s highly debatable at this point. “I’m not worried.” 

“Cool.” Josh doesn’t even try to sound convinced, but he changes the topic regardless. “So, you said there are pancakes?” 

Stiles gestures in the  general direction of the oven when Theo comes in. He’s dressed, but his hair is still wet. Awake is the last word Stiles would use to describe him. That doesn’t mean he’s not going to shoot him a look of utter disapproval when he sees the plate with pancakes Josh is pulling out of the oven. “How long have you been up?”

Grinning innocently, Stiles scratches the back of his head. “Five, I think.”

Theo kisses him, rolling his eyes while doing so. “What did she do?” he asks, reaching for a mug. 

“Who?” Stiles asks. 

“She,” Josh begins completely unbothered that he’s about to rat his packmateout to Theo, “you mean Tracy, right?” For some reason, he looks up, quirking an eyebrow inquiringly as if there's anybody else Theo could’ve possibly been talking about. Luckily, he’s also looking at Stiles, who shakes his head once, using the chance that Theo’s back is turned to him. Josh licks his lips, almost dropping the pancake in the process. “She saw Stiles and just left.” 

Theo pours coffee into his mug, shaking his head slightly. “I told you that you can’t lie to me, right?” he asks in an exceptionally conversational tone, that’s kind of terrifying coming from Theo. “You know what I heard? I’ve heard your heartbeat pick up over the words ‘and just left’.” Wrapping a hand around his mug, he pushes the coffeepot back into the machine and turns around. “How about we try that again?”

“Drop it, Misiu.” 

“Josh, what did she do?”

It’s very clear on the chimera’s face that he regretted every decision he made that brought him here. Swallowing heavily, Josh places a pancake on his plate. “She shoved Stiles against the counter and got in his face and–”

“Oh my god, shut up.”

Theo stares at Josh over the rim of his cup. “Anything else I should know about?”

“She threatened him.” 

There’s a sharp edge to Theo’s smile, a little twitch of his jaw before he relaxes his features again. All signs that a storm is brewing. “And you did...?” he asks, gesturing nonchalantly for Josh to continue. It’s all for show, but Stiles isn’t sure who he’s kidding. The white-knuckled grip on the mug in his hand is visible from fucking space. 

Josh clasps his plate, shifting his weight almost nervously. “Uhm…”

Stiles slams his hand on the table and points at the door. “Go eat your fucking pancake somewhere else.” It’s not Josh he’s angry at, but Stiles doubts the boy would leave the room if he asked him nicely. Neither Tracy nor Josh need to get in trouble for this. Stiles is old enough to deal with this shit. Sure, Tracy wouldn’t protect him. She’d probably make shit up just so Theo and he get in a fight, but Stiles really doesn’t want this drama. If Josh turns into Theo's snitch, keeping the peace won’t be any easier because then Theo is going to punish Tracy for her behavior, and she’s going to hate Stiles even more, which is very counterproductive. 

Folding his left arm over his chest, Theo turns towards him. “Are you going to tell me you can handle her by yourself?” 

This is ridiculous. She isn’t some supervillain. Stiles is perfectly capable of dealing with her. If Theo thinks he’s impressed by threats and physical violence, he doesn’t know him at all. It’s not that he isn’t worried about what idiotic plans she might come up with, but he isn’t even half as concerned and Theo. “I’m gonna kill her with kindness.” 

Theo snorts. “I’m sure you will.” 

“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” Stiles mutters, stealing his mug of coffee. Although he usually drinks his coffee a bit sweeter and with milk, this is one of those mornings he takes it as black as they come. Not that one black coffee is close to enough. His mood is going to get worse the longer the day drags on. He can already tell. Hopefully, he'll crash early tonight. He needs to be awake for their research and training. The sooner he and Lydia start honing their abilities, the better. 

Theo crosses and uncrosses his arms, glancing at Stiles, and then at the plate of pancakes. “About what I said last night,” he starts after a moment of silence. Again, his gaze darts to Stiles. If Theo hopes he’s going to tell him to drop it, he couldn’t be any more wrong. They have to talk this out, or they are going to go in circles for the rest of their relationship. If Theo keeps being afraid of losing him to everything, they won’t be going anywhere. “I don’t wanna lose you is all.” 

Raising his brows, Stiles simply looks at him. It’s not that he wants to annoy Theo; he genuinely doesn’t know what he expects him to reply. 

“Don’t give me that look.” 

Stiles shrugs. This fucking conversation is going nowhere. Not as long as Theo refuses to listen to him. “You don’t want me to say anything.”

“I don’t want you to tell me I won’t lose you,” Theo shoots back, an edge to his voice that would most definitely excite Tracy, “because that’s nothing you can promise.” He snatches the mug away from Stiles. Hot coffee spills over his fingers, and Theo curses. His knuckles turn white, muscles go rigid, and for a second, it seems as if he’s about to hurl the mug across the kitchen. He doesn’t. Instead, he sets it down on the counter. Hard, but not hard enough for it to break. 

“What do you want me to say then?” 

Eyes narrowed, Theo grabs a towel and wipes his hand clean of the coffee. “I don’t know,” he replies after a while, tossing the towel in the sink. 

Stiles rolls his eyes. “That’s not helpful at all, you know that?” And Theo grimacing at him doesn’t do shit either. This is fucking stupid. He doesn’t want to talk about this even though he knows they have to. They’re both so far gone already, if they cannot work out this problem, things will explode. Not necessarily between them, but between Theo and somebody else. Well, fuck – between Theo and Brett. Because Theo won’t do something stupid around his dad or Parrish, and he can’t exactly do anything against the Dread Doctors. But if his frustration comes to yet another boiling point, Brett is probably going to be his outlet, and Stiles knows exactly how that’s going to end. “I can’t help you feel less afraid –” that Theo curls his lips as if he’s smelling something rotten does not slip Stiles’ attention “– if you don’t believe me, or don’t want me to say anything about it.” 

Corey does a pisspoor job of sneaking past the open kitchen door. Hayden shoves him, urging him to go faster. Wonderful. The whole house is awake for this. Good thing Liam didn’t stay the night. 

Licking his lips, Theo turns to look at him. “Why are you with me?”

Although Stiles knew he’d be faced with that question eventually, he didn’t anticipate it quite this early. With a sigh, he pushes away from the counter and crosses the room. Theo opens his arms when Stiles steps into his personal space and buries his face in the crook of his neck, arms tight around his waist. That, quite clearly, is Theo’s favorite position. Stiles briefly wonders if it has anything to do with his being a werewolf - even if only artificial. 

Stiles wraps his arms around him and leans his head against Theo’s. “Because you feel right.” 

Theo huffs out a breath. “I have no idea what that means.” 

“You don’t have to,” Stiles whispers, closing his eyes. There’s something calming about Theo’s arms around him, their bodies close together, heartbeat next to his. It’s more than that. It quiets his mind, helps him think, and Stiles finally knows what to say, “all you gotta know is that you won’t lose me –”

Theo tenses. “Don’t –”

But Stiles goes on, pulling away to cup his neck. “You won’t lose me as long as I have a say in it, okay?” It’s such an easy response; Stiles Can't believe he didn’t think of it last night. Maybe he can’t predict what other people do. Maybe he can’t predict what the future brings, but right now, this is what he can promise Theo. Because if his instincts are anything to go by, he’s found the one. His mom always told him that he'd know. When he told her about Lydia during her good moments, she asked him if she was his forever person. Stiles never understood what she meant when she said he’d know once he met them. He never got that feeling with Malia. From the very beginning, their relationship had an expiration date, a well hidden one perhaps, but an expiration date nonetheless. 

Stiles doesn’t feel the same with Theo, and that’s equally terrifying as exhilarating. “Okay?” he asks again, leaning in and brushing their noses together. 

Theo sighs. “Yeah,” he whispers, tilting his head a little further to the left to kiss him. “Okay.“

Stiles presses a hand to his chest, sucking in a breath. Every single one of his ribs is hurting like hell, and he’s hit the ground for the umpteenth time. His patience is running out. Actually, fuck that. Grinding his teeth, Stiles gets back on his feet. When Jackson raises a brow, it takes Stiles every bit of composure he has not to break his jaw. “You’re seconds away from getting my lacrosse stick so far up your ass, you’re gonna taste it for weeks to come, Whittemore.” 

Danny jogs over to them. “Now, you’re talking like a lacrosse player.” 

Scoffing, Jackson crosses his arms. “Don’t be such a wuss, Stilinski.” 

“A wuss?” Stiles snaps, barely resisting to stomp his feet. They’ve been at practice for so much longer than the rest of the team, and he’s exhausted, starving and in pain. “Are you trying to break my ribs?” Because for some reason, Jackson never stops aiming for his chest – and a fucking chest plate only does so much against werewolf strength. 

Jackson rolls his eyes. “Do you think Talbot’s gonna treat you any differently?”

“He probably won’t try to break my bones!”

“He will if you’re doing your job correctly.” His job. Jackson’s obsession is seriously getting out of hand. It’s not just that this is a fucking charity game because at this point Stiles is sure that every single game against Devenford Prep will be this kind of a disaster. This will be his last lacrosse game. Not because of Jackson, although he’s the perfect example of everything that’s wrong with the game in the first place, he’s just over it. Lacrosse isn’t worth all this goddamn drama, and it’s not like lacrosse games aren’t a hotspot for terrible shit to go down. “Besides,” Jackson says, lowering his voice although there’s nobody else around, “you’re like us now.” 

Things would be so much easier if that were the truth. “No, I’m not.” Not even in the slightest. He’s so much more breakable than the normal werewolf. Probably because he isn’t a fucking werewolf. There isn’t even a shred of werewolf inside of him. “So, I’d appreciate it if you could stop.”

Jackson tosses his lacrosse stick from his right to his left hand, gesturing dismissively. “I have to prepare you for Talbot somehow.”

Maybe Stiles misjudged the situation. This isn’t about lacrosse at all. This is about Jackson’s personal vendetta. All he wants is to see is Brett failing, and it’s absolutely fucking ridiculous. “If you have to prepare me,” Stiles says, shaking his head, and turns toward the bench, “then you’re clearly up to speed and don’t need me.” Because, honestly, Stiles is regretting the decision to play at the game on Saturday. He really does. All he wants is to lie in bed and get rid of the tension in his muscles. He’s tired and moody and starving. Fuck, he’s so hungry. If he comes home and nobody cooked, Stiles will murder somebody.

“No,” Jackson insists, and he and Danny follow him immediately, “we need you.” 

Stiles draws his eyebrows together, glancing at Jackson over his shoulder. “If it’s about speed, Kira is faster than I am.” Because speed is really the only thing he has to offer against Brett. The guy is stronger, more experienced, and so much more interested in lacrosse.

“This isn’t about speed, and you know that.”

Then what the hell is this about? There's nothing else Stiles can use against Brett. Not during a lacrosse game anyway. "No, I actually didn't know that."

Danny snorts out a laugh. "He's so innocent."

To exactly nobody's surprise, Jackson doesn't consider this funny at all. "We can't beat Devenford fair and square."

"Look at that," Stiles says, quirking a brow, and opens his bottle of water, "stage five. Acceptance." Because if Jackson has one thing right, it's that they're going to be torn apart on Saturday. Werewolves or no werewolves, Devenford is so much better than they are. It’s going to be a miracle if they shoot a single goal.

Jackson hooks a finger around Stiles’ helmet and yanks him closer. “Unless someone is occupying their star player.”

Narrowing his eyes, Stiles swats at his hand, but it’s Danny who pulls his best friend away with a heavy sigh. “Straight back to denial, huh?” he asks, feeling a pang of satisfaction when Danny tries to hide his laugh rather unsuccessfully behind a cough. “It was fun while it lasted.” 

“Use your charm.” Jackson reaches for him again, but Danny yanks him away by the back of his jersey. It doesn’t even seem to bother him. “Talbot clearly thinks you're attractive for whatever reason.” Because insults are going to help in this situation, right? Jackson really has to be exceptionally desperate. “Distract him, flirt with him –”

That’s a fucking joke, isn’t it? Stiles pushes his helmet up, uncapping his water bottle. “Are you kidding me?” 

“Take one for the team.”

If he weren’t so thirsty, Stiles would drench Jackson with his water. “I’m in a relationship.” 

Jackson waves his hand around, throwing his helmet onto his backpack. “If anybody understands that you have to risk something for the win, it’s Theo.” Oh, that’s a fantastic joke. It really is, and Stiles would almost laugh if Theo’s jealousy weren’t as frustrating as it is. Because what Jackson clearly lacked in his relationship with Lydia, Theo has enough of. Actually, Stiles is pretty sure Theo is jealous enough for the two of them because while Tracy is severely pissing him off, Stiles isn’t at all worried about being dumped because of her. 

Rolling his eyes, he takes a sip of his water. “No,” Stiles announces than, “Theo most definitely will not understand.” 

“Yeah,” Danny agrees, pushing his helmet up as well, “he doesn’t look like the sharing type.” 

Jackson waves him off almost aggressively. “I’m not talking about sharing, I’m talking about flirting.” 

Anger settles in the pit of his stomach. “I’m not going to flirt with him either.” This conversation feels like it can only go worse from here, so he should probably end it before they get into a fight. Stiles is a stubborn mess with mild to severe anger management issues – it really depends on the topic and day – while Jackson is a hothead. That’s another reason why they never got along.

“Come on, Stiles.” It’s impossible to say if Jackson calling him by his nickname instead of his last name is progress or a desperate attempt to convince him. 

“Listen,” Stiles says, throwing the water bottle into his back, “I don’t know, and I actually really don’t care what Brett did to piss you off so bad.” Trying to keep his annoyance in check, Stiles pauses briefly, pulling his helmet off completely in the process, and runs his fingers through the mess that is his hair. “I’m not going to help you with your childish vendetta, okay?” 

Not okay. Not okay at all. That much is obvious in the way Jackson’s lips curl into a disapproving line. Before he could say something, however, Danny cuts in. “He kicked him off first line.” 

That takes Stiles by surprise. He blinks and turns to look at Danny. “He what?”

Ignoring Jackson’s glare, Danny continues, “Talbot, he had the chance for a scholarship. All he had to do was get through summer school to become a Freshman a year earlier. He pulled through, took the last remaining spot at first line, and became co-captain.” Although Stiles has been aware that Brett is a year younger than they are, he never considered asking what grade he’s in. He somehow expected him to be a Junior. He still hardly knows anything about the guy. 

Huh. 

Stiles draws his eyebrows together. “So, what?” He shakes his head, scrutinizing a severely disgruntled Jackson again. “You didn’t make first line, so you decided to leave the best team Beacon County has to play with the Cyclones? Seriously?” That’s the dumbest shit he’s heard in the past two years, and he really has heard of a lot of stupid shit. 

“I’m not going to sit on a bench,” Jackson snaps, crossing his arms and jutting his chin in the air. “I deserve to be captain.” The worst thing about this argument is that Jackson does deserve to be captain. Especially when it comes to the Cyclones. They’re a mess of a team, and they need someone who can kick their asses. That still doesn’t explain how Jackson threw away his chance at a winning team. Devenford has been at the top of the leaderboard for years. Another thing is that he sounds so much like Theo, it’s uncanny. The guy couldn’t become alpha of his first choice of pack, so he went out and resurrected one just to be the king of the mountain. 

“I’m flattered.” 

Jackson whips his head around, and Stiles closes his eyes in defeat. Brett couldn’t have chosen a worse time for a surprise visit. 

“I didn’t know you’re thinking so much about me in your spare time, Whittemore.” Smirking almost lazily, Brett walks up to them, hands pushed in the pockets of his sweatpants. At least he’s on brand. Stiles couldn’t deal with seeing him in anything other than that or his school uniform. It’s enough that Brett is here. 

Swallowing around the lump in his throat, Stiles tugs on his jersey, ignoring the pool of dread in his gut. “What happened?” 

Brett’s face softens a little. “Nolan pulled through. He’s a bit twitchy, but he should be fine in a few days.” 

Holy crap. Stiles closes his eyes and lets out a long breath. These are unexpected but surprisingly good news. “Yeah, well,” he mutters, sinking onto the bench, “he was dead.” To be honest, he was hoping that Nolan would make it. He really was. Still, he didn’t expect that it would be such a relief. Then again, it’s finally something good after all the shit that went down in the past few weeks. 

“So I’ve been told.”

Stiles’ head snaps up. “He remembers?”

“Most of it,” Brett tells him with a nod.

Tapping a finger against his lacrosse stick, Jackson scowls. “Fuck, man, that blows.” 

Out of the corner of his eye, Stiles sees Danny nod, but he keeps looking at Brett because Brett studies Stiles way too intently for his liking. He shifts uncomfortably on the bench and grabs his water bottle again, so he doesn’t fidget with his jersey. Stiles clears his throat. “That’s not the only reason you’re here, is it?” he asks, hoping that talking would stop Brett from looking at him like that. 

It does. The werewolf cocks his head, giving him an almost curious expression before he pulls his shoulders into a slow shrug and lets his eyes wander over the lacrosse pitch. “I wanted to check up on you,” he says in a casual tone, turning to look at him again. “You still feel a bit under the weather.” 

Stiles tosses the bottle back and forth between his hands. “I didn’t sle–” he blinks then snaps his head up to stare at Brett “hold on. How much do you feel?”

For some reason, the guy seems to think that’s hilarious. Maybe it’s his overall mood, but Stiles really doesn’t know what’s so funny about this question. “I don’t feel when you and your lover boy are going at it, don’t worry.”

“That’s not what I was insinuating,” Stiles mutters, although that was the main reason he was asking. It’s hard enough to keep everything under wraps being surrounded by werewolves, who don’t love anything more than to stick their noses in other people’s business; he really doesn’t need Brett to do the same from afar. The little privacy Stiles has, he does want to keep. That’s all he’s asking for. 

Brett raises a brow. Yeah, he’s not believing a single word Stiles has just uttered. “All I feel is how powerful you are, and where you’re hanging out at the moment.” Sighing as if this whole situation is somehow extremely draining, Brett sits down next to him, long legs kicked out in front of him, hands still in the pockets of his sweatpants. “You feel like you’re in desperate need of an energy boost.” 

Jackson perks his head up. “Wait, that’s a thing?”

“Don’t get any ideas,” Stiles warns, then turns back to Brett. “I thought now that I’m connected to the leylines, I’m fine.” 

Again, Brett cocks his head a little. “Do you feel fine?” 

Although the question is clearly rhetorical, Stiles feels the need to correct him, “I’m fine. I just didn’t sleep very well.” And his muscles are still a bit stiff, but that’s probably normal. It could have gotten worse again because of the intense training Jackson has dragged him through.

“You’re not a hundred percent.” 

“I’m fine.”

“He's been complaining about his ribs,” Jackson cuts in, crossing his arms over his chest. Although his demeanor seems rather impatient, it seems that he tolerates Brett’s presence as long as he gives him information on how Stiles can become a better lacrosse player. Priorities. They really have to work on his goddamn priorities.

Danny rolls his eyes. “Because you used your strength to knock him off his feet.” 

“Why would you do that?” Brett asks, leaning forward to look past Stiles at Jackson. “You know that every time he has to heal, he uses his own energy, right? All you do is slow him down.”

“Slow him down?” Danny asks.

“Even the nemeton had to recharge,” Brett says, shaking his head. “If not for the accidental sacrifice and you idiots –” he regards Stiles with a brief glance before returning his attention back to Danny “it would’ve needed years to get back to full power. Stiles doesn’t need years, but most likely a few days after the stunt he pulled. Every time you fucking morons bruised his ribs, you’ve essentially yanked the charging cable out of him.” 

Bouncing his leg, Stiles glances from Danny to Jackson and then to Brett. “How long do you think it’ll take until I’m fully back?”

Brett doesn’t answer immediately, instead, he crosses his arms over his thighs and studies the empty lacrosse pitch again. “You know there’s a way to shorten the process.” 

Know isn’t quite the right word here. It didn’t exactly cross Stiles’ mind before Brett mentioned it, but now it’s pretty obvious what he’s talking about. “No,” he says, tightening his grip on the water bottle. Just because he took a bit of his pain to test his reaction, does not mean he’s going to use it as a source. Because he’s not. The ley lines are his power source, he doesn’t need pain. He’s fine. He can wait a day or two. After all, his magic isn’t the only thing he has. He can defend himself just as well with his bo staff and the daggers. 

Brett scoffs. “You have to get used to it eventually if you wanna throw your magic around like that.” 

“It was an accident.”

“Get used to what?” Jackson interjects, stepping close enough that his knee nudges against Stiles’ leg.

Ignoring him, Brett snatches the water bottle from Stiles’ hands and holds it out to him. “Lift it,” he challenges with a grin, rolling the bottle on his flat palm. 

Stiles draws his eyebrows together. “Lift it?” If he’s only slowing down his recharging process, why the fuck should he waste his powers for something stupid like this? He wouldn’t even use it against Tracy last night. Not because it would slow everything down, but because he doesn’t want his own life force for stupid shit. Lifting a water bottle definitely falls under the category ‘stupid shit’. 

“Yeah, use those powers and make it fly, little nemeton boy.” 

His temper really isn’t at its best today. Stiles swallows the anger down, narrowing his eyes. “Do people ever tell you that you’re a dick?” 

“All the time,” Brett says, now outright smirking at him. “Now, what’s it gonna be? Make it fly, or nah?” 

Stiles never realized what a punchable face Brett has, but right now, he really does understand where Liam is coming from. Grinding his teeth, he focuses on the bottle. Little nemeton boy. What an asshole. Stiles curls his hands into tight fists, searching for the familiar sensation that's undoubtedly magic – and comes up with absolutely nothing. That can’t be good. Scratch that. It’s absolutely terrible. How the fuck is he supposed to deal with the Dread Doctors when he can’t use his magic? Yes, sure. He still has his bo staff, but if claws don’t do anything to them, Stiles doubts a fucking stick will help the cause. “I–”

“No need to panic,” Brett says, grabbing Stiles’ thigh, and stops him from bouncing his leg. “That’s normal. Remember, you’re supposed to uphold the balance. You’re not the protector of the supernatural. That’s our job.” With a small nod, he squeezes Stiles’ leg one more time before letting go. “You’ll get access to your magic back, but for now, it’s more important that you keep yourself alive.” 

Stiles licks his lips. “How does my body know how to do this?” 

Brett looks at him for what feels like an eternity before he says, “instinct, I guess.” It doesn’t sound very convincing, but then again, something like Stiles has never really existed before. So everything is guesswork until they get proof or their theories are completely thrown out of the window. 

Clearing his throat, Jackson shifts a little. “How long is it going to take?” he asks, exchanging a quick glance with Danny. “Until he’s back.” 

Brett places the water bottle on the bench and folds his arms over his thighs again. “Days,” he says  in a low voice, "maybe weeks.” For a moment, he pinches his face, lips curled into a tight line. Then he shakes his head. “We don't have that much time." No. They hardly have days. Not with the Dread Doctors and Donovan still out there.

"Then we need a plan b," Danny says, folding his arms tightly over his chest. "It's not like he can just stroll around town and buy a shot of pain."

"There are other options," Brett says without looking at any of them. He doesn't have to. The tense line of his shoulders tells Stiles exactly what he needs to know. If he has to, Brett will go the extra mile for Stiles to get exactly as much pain as he needs to get back on top of his game. Although he does kind of appreciate it, Stiles really doesn't know how to feel about that. 

Danny scoffs. "And whose pain is he going to take, huh?"

“Mine.” 

Stiles whips his head around, watching Theo appear between the bleachers. His chest constricts at the mere thought of taking his pain. “No,” he breathes, shaking his head. This is not going to happen. He won’t take Theo’s pain. “No,” Stiles repeats firmer, getting to his feet as Theo arrives at the bench, “absolutely not. That’s out of the question.” 

Theo squares his shoulders, and his jaw is set in a way that tells Stiles this is about to turn into another argument, no matter what he’ll say or do. “You’re not taking his,” Theo tells him, jutting his chin in Brett’s direction. 

“I wasn’t planning to.” 

Brett huffs. “You took it before.” 

Stiles rounds on him. If there was a way he could staple Brett’s mouth shut, he wouldn’t hesitate a second. This guy knows exactly what to say in order to make everything so much worse. “That was just to see how I’d react. This is different,” Stiles says, curling his hands into fists. “I barely took anything from you.” 

Theo grabs his wrist and pulls him close. His grip is almost a little too tight for it to be a gesture of comfort, and Stiles briefly files the information away as something to be talked about later. Theo hardly believes him when they’re alone; he's not going to agree when Brett is sitting a few feet away from him.

“Okay, let’s say he’s doing it,” Jackson says, raising a hand to stop Stiles from speaking before he’s even fully turned to look glare at him, “how much would he need?”

“If this is about lacrosse –”

“No, this isn’t about lacrosse, Stilinski,” Jackson snaps, glaring at him. “We can’t watch you and the town. If you’re defenseless –”

“I’m not defenseless!”

Jackson sneers. “You think your little daggers are going to do anything? Or that stick of yours?”

There’s only so much he can handle from a single person, and Jackson has been toeing the line to getting smacked for the past couple of hours. That’s it. Stiles is going to show him exactly how defenseless he is. Jackson will learn first hand what Stiles can do with his stick.  He yanks his hand free, but Theo is quick to wrap both arms around his middle and pull him away.

This fucker. “Let me go,” Stiles snaps, twisting in Theo’s grip, elbowing him in the ribs. “Let me go!” Enough is enough. Seriously. Just because he’s come back for help doesn’t mean Jackson thinks he could get away with acting like the biggest jerk on the fucking campus.  

Brett has gotten up as well, stepping between them while Danny is grabbing Jackson’s upper arm. 

“You breaking your hand on his face isn’t going to help anybody,” Brett reminds him, and something about the tone of his voice actually helps Stiles take a deep breath. It reminds him of Satomi, of her calm exterior whenever she explains something to him. That doesn’t mean he’s stopped wanting to break Jackson’s nose. He’s worth more than his magic. Yes, he might not be able to kill the Dread Doctors without it, but he is still unphased when they manipulate the electromagnetic fields around them. The same can’t be said about Jackson. That asshole probably wouldn’t last a fucking second against them. 

Theo tightens his hold on him regardless. “Let him talk. It’s not worth it,” he whispers, pulling him further away from Jackson, completely and utterly unphased by Stiles’ antics. "Ignore him." Ignore him. That’s so much easier said than done. 

"Go home," Brett insists, still facing Stiles as if he's expecting something to happen. That and Theo's quiet words are helping him to take a deep breath and calm down further. "Just think about it, okay?"

"I'm not defenseless without my magic," Stiles says in a low voice.

Brett lowers his hand. "I didn't say that."

Stiles' gaze snaps back to Jackson, who raises his hands in defense. "I was talking about the Dread Doctors.”

"Bullshit."

"After all the shit you survived," Jackson snaps, sounding angry again, and takes a step forward even though Danny is still grabbing his arms. It almost looks as if he doesn’t notice he’s there. "You really think I consider you weak? You of all people? I may be an asshole, but I'm not stupid, Stilinski, okay? I'm not." He almost sounds petulant, and he’s right. No matter how pissed off Stiles might be, he knows that Jackson is more than right. Jackson is anything but stupid. He was the first to figure out Lydia is immune to the bite. He knew something was going on with Scott. If anything, Jackson is observant. He just doesn’t always tell everybody what he sees. 

Huffing out a breath, Stiles relaxes against Theo, who almost immediately loosens his grip on him. For a moment, he allows himself to close his eyes, to take a breath. It will never fail to amaze him how safe he feels in Theo’s arms, how at home just being with him makes him feel. He doesn’t want to lose this feeling. Ever. Not for anything. 

“Come on,” Theo whispers, pressing a kiss to the nape of his neck, “I’ll take you home.”
