My friend Brittany and her beau William helped me set up my home theater upstairs with the new TV. It's not quite as involved as my downstairs setup, but it has my nice front speakers and my huge subwoofer, which are the most important components. No surround sound or Atmos ceiling speakers.
I'm still dialing it in, but having home theater sound is so nice. With a good center channel I can hear dialogue so crisp and clear that I rarely need subtitles. And the subwoofer just adds so much heft to everything. Gunshots are visceral. Music sounds like you are there. And if you don't mind the learning curve, there are systems you can put together for under $1000 that would still blow you away. That may sound like a lot to some, but home theater components can last for decades. There are folks rocking out to 40 year old components that still sound worlds better than those cheap soundbars you can get at Costco. (There are actually some great soundbars. But they cost a bit more and they must have a center channel and a subwoofer.)
One thing I am fighting are the streaming apps. I really wish companies would prioritize app development to create a consistent experience across all platforms. And maybe seek out top UX designers to work out the usability kinks. Paramount's app is a design clusterfuck.
Right now I have to use the Hulu app on my TV because the Nvidia Shield Hulu app doesn't do HDR. I have to use the Paramount Plus app on the Shield because the TV app doesn't do HDR. I have to use Plex on the Shield because the TV will not passthrough DTS audio.
So instead of being able to use one remote for one device I have to use 3 remotes to control everything and switch back and forth.
Put the picture is beautiful and the sound is immersive. Can't complain about that.

The song is the call and the land is calling The land is calling the vanished through the song The land haunts us And we haunt them The shadow, the echo, the ghosts of what remain
The loss of our land haunts us. Having been severed from the land we are haunted by it. A forbidden land like a forbidden love. Until we became fire and fire us explore various forms of hauntings, love stories bound to loss, land and self, forms of imprisonment and the call to get free, with sound and song being at the heart of this exploration. In it all is a search for a reconnection to a severed broken land, community, history, one that haunts, imprisons and moves us all at once. The project is a mixed media installation with multiple channel sound and video. It formally explores the idea of hauntings in its aural and visual content and the way in which this material appears and disappears into a given space. Sometimes appearing as poetry from a dissonant voice, a broken melody or intense flashes of text and video, or an imprint from a forbidden land, a forbidden love.
This work is part of the wider May amnesia never kiss us on the mouth project

Fuck it, because I want to, I'm gonna rank my IEMS and give them a short review lets go
KZ x Crinacle CRN - ~£30 - These were my first "Neutral" sounding IEMs. I felt like a Real Music Liker when I used these, however they had no bass and a very weird treble response. I later found out that most units sold of these were completely broken, with some only utilising the Dynamic driver, and other having glue in the inner routing channels. I don't know if mine was affected by this, but there's is a whole story behind KZ and Crinacle (popular youtube audio reviewer) so I don't buy KZ anymore. This is the first of a few Crinacle collaboration IEMs.
Moondrop Chu - <£20 - These were the first IEMS I brought from a more reputable brand, and they honestly blew me away for the price. This is what started my IEM hobby. For the price I cannot fault them for sound or build quality. Metal shell, solid sound signature, however not having a removeable cable did make them a little tricky to keep in my ears. Unfortunately my ears seem to be cryptonite to any budget Moondrop IEM, and the audio filters quickly clogged. I did replace them, but it happened again soon after.
Moondrop Aria - £80 - Because my Chus blocked up (i didn't know about the filters at the time), I upgraded myself to their Big Brother. This IEM was the original market shake-up, you could not get sound quality and tuning anything like this for the money they were asking. I still have them, however like the Chus, the filters got blocked very easily. I replaced them fairly regularly for a while, but I could only get them straight from china, and the hassle of that quickly wore me down. I've stopped using them now because I have better IEMS, but they do hold a place in my heart for being such a mind blowing IEM when I first got them.
Dunu Titan S - £80 - I bought these for no other reason than other reviewers saying "They compete with the Aria" and they look really cool. That's it, no other reasons. The reviewers were right, they have a slightly different midrange and my pair felt a little more bassy than the Aria. They do not, however, like to stay put in my ears no matter which tips I use with them. So they don't sit in my regular rotation. I got them in sandblasted black and red.
7hz Salnotes x Crinacle Dioko - ~£100 - I'll be honest on this one, I regret buying these. They have no bass, they don't stay in my ears, and they look... unique? Weird. They look weird. They were the first IEMs I bought that came with a nice hard case and a lot of accessories. I do not use these at all and have tried several times to try to sell them, but my thoughts seem to be pretty common. These use a planar driver which is the only thing that sets them apart from everything else on this list, which is largely Single Dynamic Driver IEMs.
7hz Salnotes ZERO - <£20 - These came out in a wave of sub £/$20 IEM offerings from the chinese hi-fi scene, and these were a standout competitor in sound quality and tuning. I still use these sometimes, but only when I use the bass boost on my headphone amp. The neutral tuning is great, but they really do sing when the bass is boosted. It later came out that these are actually a Crinacle collaboration as well, however due to him working on these at the same time as the next IEM on this list, he decided it would be a silent collaboration instead. Solid recommendation for anyone who wants to get into IEMs or wants a solid pair of earbuds!
Truthear x Crinacle Zero - £40 - Due to NDAs from both companies, Crinacle couldn't sway either Truthear or 7hz to change the name, Crin chose to put his name on these as he wanted to help this incredibly new company break new ground. These IEMs were fairly unique when they released, they have 2 dynamic drivers, with one set to be a subwoofer and the other to handle everything else. The quality of the bass in these IEMS is like nothing else I own and this is what solidified me in the hobby, as I finally knew what was possible. I barely use them however, as the nozzle on these (the part that goes in your ear) is HUGE. I can't find a way to wear these comfortably, which is a huge shame in my eyes as this is the tuning that I have the most fun with. This isn't the last time you hear about Thruthear though.
Sennheiser IE200 - £120 - These were something of an impulse buy while at a hi-fi show. I got them for £100. These are without a doubt the best sounding IEMs that I own and I always come back to them. I don't know how sennheiser managed to squeeze this level of audio quality from a single dynamic driver, but the experience and heritage of the brand really comes through with these. One thing that I don't like is the cable. It feels cheap, it tangles easily, and makes these look much cheaper than they actually are. The ear hooks having wire in them is a huge help though, and it helps them stay in place. These would be my desert island IEMs.
Moondrop Chu 2 - <£20 - it's the Chu but better! WIth detachable cables this time. The sound signature is better than the original Chu, but again, the filters are very prone to clogging for me. At £20 they were more of a throwaway impulse purchase than anything else. Will be gifting these to a friend at some point if I can be bothered to replace the filters any time soon.
Truthear NOVA - £150 - They're back! This is what I refer to as the Zeros big brother. The design on the outside of the shell is similar, but everything has been updated on the inside. One dynamic driver and 4 balanced armature drivers (basically hearing aid speakers) with the DD set up once again as a subwoofer. These feel like premium IEMs and they're my newest purchase, so I think I'm still in somewhat of a honeymoon period with them, but they're really solid. The nozzle is much narrower then the Zero (which is something I researched thoroughly before buying) and they fit very nicely in my ears despite being a much larger shell than anything else I have. I do wish there was more bass on them, and while many people call them a "baby Variations" (a Moondrop IEM that is only big money wishlist at £520), they don't hold up in the same way, and I am still looking for a more bass heavy IEM.
Tin Hifi T2 - Free - I found these in a bin at the hackspace with a broken connector. Fixed it and bought new cable. They're terrible.
Thank you for reading if you did, i'm always happy to talk recommendations and stuff if you want them so feel free to do that if you want to!
why did i do this

i'm a little bit obsessed with the idea of residual magic. i think constantine has something of a charge to him after casting / doing a ritual, slightly tangible to people around him and maybe even visible to those with special sight, and the nature of it depends on the nature of the casting / ritual.
something transformative (transmutation, golem creation) makes his skin feel tacky like he's made of drying clay; something destructive (fire, binding, banishment) leaves static snapping off him like metal meeting an electrical socket, or like the worst sock-feet-on-carpet incident ever. he reeks like sulfur when he's summoning and copper pennies when he's surfing synchronicity, and fresh mint when he's manipulating luck and probability. after possession, his hands feel slick and slimy when he rubs his fingers together, though whether that's in his head or something other people can feel is up in the air.
since he uses a lot of preventative magic (wards, shields, his tattoos are all protective or intended to dissipate intense energy) and that relies a lot more on weathering an impact instead of channeling something inside of him to the outside, i think his most common residual effect is headaches. audible ones, because magic weirdness; where if you're within two feet of him you can hear the beat of his heart through his temples like you've got a hand against his chest. he chews excedrin to settle them, usually, or at least turn down the volume, but if you're psychic or clairsentient you can see the pulse around his head like a subwoofer buzzing.
#( headcanons. ) I'M JUST LIKE THE BASTARDS I'VE HATED ALL ME LIFE.#new hellblazer got my brain buzzing like a ball of bees#i just looooove the idea of magic as something that acts through you#and like an electrical current it can do some funny things to your body#idk how much sense this makes i might expand on this later when my brain is working#sched.

Reviving this tumblr page 10 years down the line, to post some updates on my upcoming Omnidirectional speaker project
In brief: I want to design and build a set of speakers that play high-fidelity, omnidirectional sound, for the primary purpose of running UK/Jah Shaka style dub and reggae sessions.
I'm currently most set on Awassa Sound System, but really like the relevance and cheekiness of Omniscience Sound/Hifi. I think Awassa has a better ring to it, and an air of mystique, even.
Here's a breakdown of the plan so far:
As for order of operations: Step 1:
Make a cheap and cheerful prototype of the MBL drivers. I just want to cut my teeth on the hardest part, to start building familiarity with the materials, principles, and manufacturing processes that will be involved in the build of the larger, final version.
If my friend who's into CAD and CNCing is willing, have him whip up some test lenses.
Use recycled drivers from old, cheap speakers as much as I can to keep initial exploratory costs down.
Find an active cossover unit that I can use to test different crossover frequencies with the different driver designs
Step 1 will be considered finished when I either have a working, not-awful-sounding radialstrahler, or have decided to abandon that aspect and am comfortable focusing on other methods for making omnidirectional sound.
Step 2:
Work on the other parts of the tower, namely the horn-loaded lens tweeter, the mid-bass lens, and the lower cabinet (lots of flexibility for internal design with the cabinet).
The cabinet (and maybe the horn lenses) will require learning to use a speaker simulation software
The bass scoops can come later, as there's not a lot of point building small/low-power scoops
As soon as I have a sense of what the appropriate crossover frequencies will be, order a custom dub preamp such as the RasFX Mini Pre
Get a set of relatively affordable power amps to drive the whole thing. 4 channels for a single tower to start with
Step 2 will be considered complete when I can gift (for cost of materials) a MK1 pair of these speakers to a friend of mine who's into sound system too - and of course build a set for myself!
Step 3:
Assuming everything goes smoothly in Step 2, work on scaling everything up. Size, power levels, etc. The rough goal is to be able to power a party with around 100-200 people. Maybe more, eventually
Try to figure out a way to be able to retain the functionality of a dub preamp for playing reggae, but also run the system in stereo for when I want to play
Build a set of scoop style subwoofers. The more, the bigger, the better!
Step 3, and thus the main body of the project will be considered complete when I have a fully functional, high-power sound system able to at least impress, though maybe not directly 'compete with', the current generation of younger sound systems like Indica Dubs, Ital Power, Creation Rebel, King Majesty, Sinai, and other such outfits.
-------------------
Step 4:
If everything up until this point has gone very well, and I feel confident with the various technologies, try to develop the designs to a point where it can stand as a single 'totem pole' style tower that can play to a decently-sized crowd of people.
I picture taking something like that to e.g. Boomtown Festival, and decorating it in all sorts of wacky space-age or mystical art. I think the fung shui of a single, central sound source would be really unique in a festival setting.
The big barrier is that omnis, when places inside, rely on walls and surfaces to create the feeling of 'omnipresence'. Outside, I'm not sure that'd work at all, let alone
Step 4 being complete would inherently require my sound to be powerful enough, high-enough-fidelity, and well-known enough to be included when people talk about "well-established" sound systems. The totem pole thing is a bit of a gimmick, let's be honest.
------------------
Imaginary step 5: If my work on this project can inspire more people to think outside the proverbial speakerbox when it comes to building reggae sound systems, I'd be a happy camper!

'Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers made a splash at the Telluride Film Festival in the summertime. It became an immediate critical hit for audiences and was quickly purchased for distribution by Searchlight Pictures. The film is itself a remake of a Japanese film The Discarnates which is itself an adaptation of the 1987 Japanese novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada. This tale of love found and dealing with grief may have been a critical smash, but does it hold up for us mere mortal film fans? Find out below and be sure to give it a watch on Hulu or make a digital purchase wherever you buy digital films!
Film 4/5
Adam (Andrew Scott) is a TV screenwriter living in an apartment highrise in London. He is visibly lonely, clearly struggling not just with his writing but something else. What is that you say? Adam lost his parents when he was very young. While he is now somewhere in his 40’s, Adam is still trying his hardest to find ways to cope and move on. When a fire alarm goes off in the building, Adam sets his eyes on a handsome young neighbor, Harry (Paul Mescal), who asks him if they can spend some time together. Adam says no, and then interestingly, Adam begins to “visit” his parents. They see him as his adult self, but his parents seem to be frozen in time, apparently not far from their age when they died around 1987.
After seeing his parents in a dream or hallucination, Adam happens upon Harry again and this time, they strike up a conversation that leads to sex and the connection is secure and comforting. Harry has his own secret, which we don’t learn until the end of the film, and I won’t give away here. In their time together, Adam frequently sees his parents at his old home, and is warmed by the memories and their conversations as they get to know the adult Adam. They accept his as a gay man, learn about his new love and help Adam build his own coping mechanisms as he goes through his days.
All of Us Strangers is an interesting character study. The film plays out in ways of vision. Adam, still un-recovered from the grief he has experienced since his parents died. He survived the rest of the 80’s, had a career in the 90’s and 2000’s and then now in modern times, he is alone, missing pieces of a complete life. Harry comes to him disheveled and mysterious. He looks lost even if he’s where he’s supposed to be, and even seeing Adam in his own lost state, together the pair are very much in sync together. As their relationship evolves, Adam has to figure out how to let his parents move on from their limbo state, and he has to also learn to live with that loss so he can keep on living.
Video 5/5
The 4K digital presentation of All of Us Strangers is an excellent one. I watched the film via AppleTV and immediately was taken with how gorgeous the color grading is on the film. Filmed on 35mm with a 4K DI, the film looks tack sharp and is framed beautifully in 2.39:1. Andrew Haigh is a thoughtful filmmaker, and he has treated this film with love throughout. The colors are beautiful, the detail is immaculate, and the skin tones are natural, right down to the ruddiness of characters who are touching one another with intensity. There are no instances of noise in the digital transfer.
Audio 4/5
Audio is offered in English 5.1, and French with available English, French and Spanish subtitles.
Dynamically speaking, it’s a streaming mix, so even if it’s supposedly lossless, there will be moments where the sound degrades naturally. There isn’t a great deal of surround activity, with those rear channels mostly grabbing ambience and music. Dialogue sounds excellent as that’s the main draw of the audio mix, and the subwoofer comes to life when music comes into the fold.
Extras 2/5
Extras for All of Us Strangers are short, totaling 12 minutes in length. Roots of the Story is a quick piece on the creation of the film’s roots, from novel to screen and how the changes made for this version are personal to the director. Building Adam’s World takes the first piece a step further and we learn that scenes with Adam’s family are filmed in Haigh’s childhood home. These two featurettes are interesting, but far too short.
Summary 4/5
Overall, the film is a varying movement on emotion. Loss and grief play a huge part in the story and love and acceptance do too. The story is sometimes muddied by the dreams or hallucinations of Adam, and we feel for him as he continues to grieve 36 or 37 years later. Loss doesn’t have a timeline and Adam’s story proves that. All of Us Strangers is a sad film. There are fleeting moments of happiness, but knowing Adam is speaking to the spirits of his parents is sad and the reveal at the end could be gutting to viewers. But even in sadness, you can find beauty, and Andrew Haigh has done that in this film.'

The last thing my mom bought me was a fancy A/V receiver. She got some inheritance after her mom passed and wanted to do something nice for me since I took care of her and dad pretty much all by myself.
She died shortly after it arrived and I didn't even take it out of the box for over a year. I didn't hook it up until after my dad died. I don't know why I took so long. I guess for a long time it just didn't feel all that important anymore.
It has a lot of features and a lot of power and it seems really good... on paper.
The plan was to install 4 ceiling speakers and add two more floor speakers to get a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos experience in my basement bedroom. I would be able to have sound come from literally every direction. (Well, not from below.)
That is still a plan, but I have had to postpone all of that due to budget cuts. The fancy receiver has been relegated to a measly 3.1 experience since I moved upstairs. I'm considering converting the upstairs living room into my home theater instead of my bedroom. I'd have a little more space and higher ceilings for the Atmos speakers, but I'd lose the concrete floor of the basement. So I'd have to figure out how to temper the vibrations of the subwoofer into our creaky floor.
ANYWAY.
The problem is... the actual day-to-day operation of this fancy receiver has been super quirky and frustrating.
The thing people may not realize about high end electronics is that they always have their issues. You'd think they'd be bug-free for that price, but it is usually quite the opposite. You have to figure out what all the bugs are and then research all of the workarounds in forums and eventually you'll learn a workflow to make the device function for your needs.
Part of the reason is that the higher the price, the more features they cram in, the more that can go wrong. But a lot of it is just poor software development. They focus almost all of their attention on getting the hardware right.
It's a maddening troubleshooting process and sometimes makes you want to buy that Sonos crap or maybe even... Bose. *shiver*
But this receiver has been *extra* buggy. I was a little disappointed by this. And I felt guilty for hating this wonderful gift my mom gave me. I have this Yamaha receiver that was a third of the price and it functions wonderfully.
Or maybe I just think that because I've already figured out all the quirks and workarounds.
No, I'm pretty sure the Yamaha has been a fairly smooth experience.
I kinda love my old Yamaha.
And I also love that they make pianos and motorcycles and drums and marching band equipment and sporting goods and boats.
Yamaha was all...
It's just that Yamaha doesn't have the Dirac calibration system included like the Onkyo and everyone on the forums said that was a big deal. So I abandoned the trusty Yamaha brand for Onkyo and it's 130 watts and 11 channels of processing and HDMI 2.1 future proofing.
The other day I noticed something extra weird with the Onkyo. My Nvidia Shield (another amazing yet frustrating device) was outputting a 5.1 signal. But my receiver thought it was stereo.
Another bug.
So I headed to the forums and found the solution. I had to turn off "Dolby processing" in a deep submenu of a submenu in my Shield settings. My receiver already does Dolby processing so I guess I was doing double Dolby processing and that is like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters.
Weirdly, this fixed like half of my issues. I don't know how in the world I was supposed to know this one setting buried deep in the menus was causing all this havoc. But it has made me go from wanting to yeet this thing out the window and get a Bose clock radio... to mostly enjoying the experience of having a fancy receiver.
It still handles HDMI switching as if it is having a stroke, but I have found if you turn everything off and power on the Shield FIRST and then all the other components, I can prevent most of the stroke symptoms.
Though sometimes it takes 3 tries.
Onkyo: SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT??? WHAT'S THAT??
In any case, THANKS MOM!
I'm sure I will love your gift when I have 12 speakers blaring at me from every direction.

whats the thing with all the switches on top of your crt?
its a graphic equalizer !! the bit in the middle lights up with colored waveforms when its receiving input . each switch is to raise or lower a specific frequency (30hz, 60hz, so on) and theres two rows of the same switches so you can adjust the eq differently between left and right channels .
i dont use it for heavy eq-ing but it works well as a switch between my 50 cd changer and aux input, usually from my computer ... the whole thing runs tape out to my main 10 channel mixer, where its sent to my main L and R monitors and subwoofer . that mixer is great cuz when i'm practicing guitar or synth stuff i can just plug it all right into the setup i already have instead of switching between them on an amp or something .
i love asks like this thank u :)

The topic of 7.1 virtual surround sound has sparked lively discussions among gaming gear enthusiasts. The main question revolves around whether the 7.1 emulation feature is truly essential for a gaming headset. In reality, answering this question is not difficult, but many individuals haven't had the opportunity to experience it extensively, leading to a lack of clear understanding.
Understanding Headsets with 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound
Before delving into what 7.1 emulation entails, it's important to comprehend the concept of a 7.1 audio system.
7.1 surround sound refers to an audio setup comprising one center speaker, six surround speakers placed around the listener, and one subwoofer for enhanced bass, totaling eight speakers and eight discrete channels. This system is designed to provide a more immersive audio experience, with sound coming from various directions, offering a sense of realism and depth.
So, what exactly is 7.1 emulation in gaming headsets?
In essence, most gaming headsets feature only two drivers in each ear cup (except for a few exceptional models). This means the headset has only two speakers and two independent audio channels, making it incapable of reproducing sound from multiple directions like a true 7.1 speaker system. To create the illusion of sound coming from different directions, software intervention is necessary.
These software solutions mix the left and right audio channels to generate effects that deceive our brains into perceiving sound from multiple directions. Virtual surround sound software can create effects such as sound coming from the front, left-right, front-left-front-right, rear-left-rear-right, and more, surpassing the limitations of conventional stereo headphones.
Headsets with 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound Capabilities?
Certain headphone models are officially supported by manufacturers with built-in 7.1 emulations through their proprietary software. While the audio quality heavily relies on the headset itself, the quality of the 7.1 emulation system is dependent on the accompanying software's capabilities.
The Benefits of 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound Emulation for Gamers
For gamers, the 7.1 virtual surround sound emulation feature on headphones offers two main benefits:
Enhanced Audio Directional Perception: By simulating a virtual soundstage, this feature allows gamers to perceive the virtual direction of in-game audio sources more accurately. This enables a better understanding of the battlefield, leading to improved gameplay performance
