For more than two thousand years palm trees have been extraordinarily popular in both the East and the West. Regardless of continent, religion, or culture, palms tell stories of wealth, peace, and salvation. No other motif conveys this promise of good fortune and happiness as convincingly as the palm tree does. Omnipresent in advertising and social media, it conjures up notions of luxury, the jet set, and eternal sunshine in the secular world, representing a modern Garden of Eden. Nor are visual arts resistant to its visual allure and metaphorical power. Keeping this rich cultural heritage in mind, the companion catalogue to the exhibition Paradise is Now shows the many ways that palm trees are depicted in contemporary art. But what is behind the popularity of this emblem? Which layers of meaning and what kinds of contradictions are revealed in the wake of this artistic exploration? Besides texts by Bret Easton Ellis, Robert Grunenberg, Leif Randt, and Norman Rosenthal, the publication features works by John Baldessari, Marcel Broodthaers, Rodney Graham, Secundino Hernández, David Hockney, Alicja Kwade, Sigmar Polke, Ed Ruscha, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.Exhibition: 26.4.–30.6.2018

[COMM] Shock and Awe On The Surface
Commissions Open I have a Ko-Fi Social Medias Art © CentaurWorks Characters © Chie, Yukiko (Persona 4) © ATLUS Commissioned by thatdude1993 This is a sort of sequel to a previous commission by the same user involving the same characters. The cel-shading always provides a challenge and I feel like I was able to accomplish it pretty well. I'm mostly proud of how I did the waves hitting the beach and how Chie came out, that was difficult posing wise but I just simply love the expression. If you like it, leave a comment! 😄

I was wondering if you had any analyses on yosuke's dances in P4D, especially his partner dances wrt his character/personality... or even just generally what you thought of his moves. I think atlus/p-studio enjoy putting more than meets the eye into the choreography for the dances, but i wondered what the account that does really good yosuke analyses thinks. >:) Cheers
Oh wow you're very kind!! but this is also a very high level ask as I am not at all a dance expert and I'm still working my way through all of the dances, but I will do my best! o7
Long post incoming!
I remember reading an interview which said that Yosuke's dance style is very much inspired by male idols with a hip-hop flair, and I can definitely see it in his dance? iirc there was a pretty strong influence of hip-hop in jpop of that era - I'm thinking about Johnny's entertainment boybands which I think pretty much dominated the jpop male idol scene around 2010 - just look at Arashi's Monster dance routine, which imo is a super quintessential dance of that time. Like Jun's breakdance around 0:45, but also more generally, the sort of precise, rapid-pace footwork and moves that is also very evident in both Backside of the TV and Your Affection. I think it really suits him for a few reasons
Yosuke generally has the highest agility stat and tends to be the fastest char (for me at least? but i've also seen enough fics that reference how quick he moves), so it makes sense that this sort of high-pace dance suits him. Obviously Yosuke has a very good sense of beat listening to music all the time in combat and moving with it, so despite his real world clumsiness, he's well equipped to take on the kind of rigorous idol dance style that's typically very demanding to learn and perfect.
At the same time, it also matches his narrative - Yosuke in canon is very familiar with idol culture, both with Risette and Kanamin Kitchen, so it's not too surprising? But what I thought was kind of interesting was that there aren't really any references to male idol groups in world, and even his bedroom in p4au only shows female idol posters and some mainstream American albums. However, in the interview scene at the end of p4d, he mentions to Yukiko that he's tried to copy moves from stuff he's seen. But his dance style is more similar to boy idol bands - with the hip hop influence especially - as opposed to being similar to female idol bands - which tend to be preppier in dance style (see AKB48 for example). (Or just compare Rise's dance with Yosuke's.) So idk if this is a random oversight on Atlus/P-Studio's part, or if Yosuke is a closet male idol enjoyer (which would be very funny but also on brand for him, especially if he's still in the closet).
The other thing about idol music and group idol dance styles more generally is how much emphasis there is on harmony. If you look at the Arashi video again, there's kind of the expectation that all members are dancing in sync with each other. The thing about that sort of group dance is that you don't really have "leads" and "backup" dances, because no one member is really supposed to stand out or take centre stage since they're all equals. And I think that's a fun thing to think about because, you know, Yosuke Rank 10. But it's also in his partner dances with the others - I feel like Yosuke tends to harmonise with the others and their dance styles the most, maybe he's second to Yu? But Yosuke tends to match his dancing to the style of the other person when he joins them in Fever, like in Naoto's or Chie's (caveat, maybe I'm just Yosuke-biased LMAO). I think there's a lot to say about it because on the one hand, his captain ressentiment attitude means he sees his friends as better but he also wants to catch up to them and be their equals! but also, on the other hand, Yosuke doesn't want to stand out? And him keeping his head down is very much in character for him throughout most of the game, so :')
(but also souyo lens time his partner dances with yu is SO GOOD they mirror one another so well and it makes me so weak)
I think my final point is on how idol dancing is kind of on brand for him as well? Yosuke is kind of a vain person - he likes fashionable clothes! He likes to look cool! (and we love him for it!!) - and I think one thing that kind of marks idol dancing compared to, idk, interpretive dancing as an extreme example, is how idol dances tend to emphasize... looking good? The whole point of idols is to sell them on their aesthetics, after all, and good looks are kind of a minimum criteria to being in an idol group. The dances are choreographed to maximise the dancer's appeal, so it's all smooth moves that present them in the best light.
Those are my extremely long thoughts!! but yeah tldr I think his dance style really suits him on every level I can't imagine anything better for him ngl. Anyone with more expert knowledge feel free to pitch in though

Yukari - Bit of a veteran has been in contests since she was 17 (she’s 28 now) has a solid fan base who have supported her throughout her career
Uses her Aromatisse and Slyveon
Yukiko - Another new one, Yukiko has been in contests for a year now, her fan base is small
uses her froslass and cherrim
Goro - Another famous coordinator, known for his charm and wit. Has an extremely Whig fanbase in Kanto
uses his honchkrow and daschbun
Yusuke - Another newbie, he’s just entered for this years tournament, has a small fan base

Who really created Heaven?
First off, there is a no-fun-allowed answer from ATLUS in the Persona Club book where they directly state that Heaven was born from the repressed thoughts of Nanako, who wanted to see her mother, and how its appearance is how it is because it was molded by the heart of a 6 year old child:
Tumblr media
It continues that the area where you fight Namatame / Kuni no Sagiri has 13 steps, which signifies that something bad is coming (13 steps to the gallows for execution).
But honestly, No Fun Allowed answers aside, the idea that Heaven was actually created by Namatame never really made much sense to me tbqh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For one thing, Nanako goes into the TV before him. This is confirmed by his journal entry, as he wrote in his journal after Putting Her In but before the car crash. Wouldn't this mean the dungeon was formed by the time he jumped into the TV?
Another thing is that while this isn't exactly stated or explained very well, the player knows from simply playing the game that the dungeons are created by the repressed thoughts of people who appear on the Midnight Channel. Remember how the protagonist/Yosuke/Chie didn't create a dungeon when they first entered the TV? If everyone who just fulfills the basic requirement of "enter a TV" made a dungeon, then the 3 of them should have made one too. But it was Mayumi, Saki, Yukiko, etc who made dungeons, and they were all on the Midnight Channel. Namatame was on TV before due to the scandal, but that was back in April. If anything, spawning a dungeon when you enter the TV seems to be a result of the term "living rent free in someones head" taken literally, given that the TV World is Persona 4's collective unconscious. Sorry Namatame, but I think the only person who's head you've been living in rent free is Adachi's. Speaking of him - the exception here is stuff like Adachi, and his dungeon is hand waved in the book as being something he created - rather than from his repressed thoughts - to fuck with the Investigation Team. Adachi was probably getting boosted by Ame no Sagiri anyway. Cheater.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, this dialogue is new to Golden (the concert wasn't in the PS2 game), but the dungeons are shown time and time again to be some kind of representation of what the person is repressing inside. As Namatame talks to you in December, he comes to terms with him having a feeling that the TV was dangerous all along. It's likely also what drove him to jump into the TV after Nanako to begin with, instead of just letting himself be arrested.
I think this new dialogue for Golden kinda seals it (before invoking the No Fun Allowed excerpt) because if what Namatame was repressing inside was the realization that the TV was dangerous, why would his dungeon - or one he went 50/50 on with Nanako - look like Heaven?
That said, the book also notes that the protag/Yosuke/Chie created the pattern on the floor of the TV studio because they MURDER on the brain when they entered the TV, so it seems possible for someone to influence their surroundings in the TV World; perhaps the note from Atlus about the gallows steps can be interpreted to hint at Namatame creating that imagery when he went inside?

Yuki Clan Oc ₊ ⊹ ⤹ More about her under the cut ⤹
Yukiko is a medic-nin and a civilian doctor by choice—she detests shinobi life and only made the status of chunin because it was required of her to practice medicine as a shinobi. Though she learned the Yuki clan’s secret healing techniques she avoids using her Ice release Kekkei Genkai as much as possible. The first of her Clan to be born in Konoha—as her mother/brother traveled from the Land of water while her mother (Azami- meaning thistle flower) was pregnant with her. They lost their father (Mikazuki- meaning crescent moon) to a hunter-nin on the road. She was named for their old surname Yuki [meaning snow], after changing it for their protection. Yukiko is outgoing, kind and friendly but can be childish at times. She will hold a grudge from beyond the grave and is extremely petty, which has only helped her become a genjutsu master. When the situation calls for it she'll sometimes manipulate ice to help with her illusions.
Her summons is a sea otter named Awabi meaning abalone. Awabi is an excellent tracker. Her whiskers can detect vibrations in water and sense for chakra signatures. Awabi can manipulate water and make strong air currents with her tail. As a ninja tool user, she is also skilled with seals.
Yukiko had always planned to marry outside their clan in the hopes to not pass on her Kekkei Genkai, however she ends up falling in love with Keisui [meaning liquid, river] Yuki, a member from a separate branch that also found refuge in Konoha. They meet in a medical tent outside Iwagakure serving in a battle that led up to the first great shinobi war. They shared similar beliefs about their clan and fears over their lineage. Keisui remained a chunin, choosing not to advance as he didn't want to draw attention to him/his family. After they married he took her surname 'Ketsueki'. They have a daughter Umiko, born with the clan's ice release Kekkei Genkai. *Yukiko is Akami’s grandmother too!*
Yukiko does pottery in her spare time, she has a small studio space in her home where she reconstitutes her own clay. She works with stoneware and porcelain, having made most of the dishes and ceramics in her home.
