Why Virtual internships?
Virtual internships are internships done entirely via email, online chat, or phone. They typically offer a great deal of flexibility and remove the necessity of having to live in a certain geographical location.
Simply speaking, a virtual internship is when an intern works remotely, as in anywhere other than in an office. Virtual internships, are easier to fit into a busy college schedule and offer students an opportunity to gain experience without having to commute to a specific location at a specific time.
Many virtual internships exist in the fields of IT, sales, journalism, marketing, and software development. Jobs in those areas lend themselves to remote work, but you can find opportunities for virtual internships in other types of employment as well. Although the structure of a virtual internship may be different than that of a traditional internship, the application process is usually pretty similar. First, you will probably be asked to send in a resume and cover letter and perhaps some supporting materials, such as writing samples. If the manager likes what they see, you will be interviewed by phone.
Before you accept a virtual internship, there are some questions you should get answers to:
What tasks will you be doing and what will your responsibilities be?
Will training or supervision be offered only at the beginning or over the course of the internship?
How many hours per week are required for the internship?
Is the internship paid?
Can you receive college credit for the internship?
Will you receive an evaluation or recommendation letter at the end of the internship? Will your supervisor be able to act as a work reference after the internship is over?
Could the internship lead to full-time employment at the company?
During the internship use the opportunity to learn from everyone. You have the opportunity to learn from everyone you interact with. Consider ways to talk with others on the team, managers, and others. Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, or even the phone are all great ways to communicate with and learn from your co workers. When you meet with individuals, prepare a few questions for them such as:
What excites you about your work?
What has been most helpful to you in this position?
What are some trends in this field?
How did your educational and career pathway prepare you for your work here?
What kind of challenges do you face in your position?
What are important skills for being successful in this field?
Before your internship ends make sure that you have fulfilled all responsibilities and tie up any loose ends. Prepare a list of your summer accomplishments that you can share with your supervisor. Make sure to say good-bye to everyone you worked with. You may also want to ask your direct supervisor for a recommendation letter or if they would be willing to serve as a reference at a later time.
Finally, don’t forget to update your resume with all of the skills and accomplishments from the summer, and be sure to connect with your colleagues on LinkedIn for future networking

Students from Northern Michigan University are completing awesome internships!
Amir is a marketing major from La Grange, Ill. He plans to graduate in December 2017. This summer, he is interning with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Chicago.
“As a member of the Management Consulting team, I will be put on a real client project with a team of PwC professional workers to help clients translate strategy into execution,” Amir said. “Our team helps businesses improve their performance and grow by solving problems and finding new and better ways of doing things.“
As a student at NMU, Amir said his academic career and educational experiences have been fantastic. He enjoys the small class sizes and the helpful professors.
“The classes that I have taken have provided me with a strong all-around foundation, not only about the materials that we learn in the classroom but outside the classroom,” Amir said. “NMU has taught and challenged me on how to stand out from the crowd and be a bright and well-spoken individual.”
Way to go Amir!

Advice on Internships
”I am a second year Commerce student and I am applying to different Internship Programmes. Do you have any advice on internships so I can make the most of this experience?”
I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to gain internship experience within my time at University. Completing an internship was something that never appealed to me as the idea of working for free and giving up my chance to go travelling in the Summer didn’t entice me. I am often surrounded by people who strive after internships in order to get a foot into the industry they plan on going into post university, therefore my opinion on gaining internship experience has drastically changed since before I started university.
The Internship Programme within Commerce was something I often contemplated. I was horrendous with numbers and after failing Financial Accounting 1 in first year and forfeiting the chance to study abroad, I knew my chance of an internship was highly unlikely. Applications came around and I thought maybe I should just apply and see what happens. I had secured three D grades in semester one of second year along with my pass for my Financial Accounting 1 repeat. My GPA was far from impressive, but I was bloody chuffed. I avoided all internship applications that required me to submit my grades. Most of the internships on offer were for one of the big 4 accounting firms which I immediately avoided as I knew I would not have survived and could potentially have put any company I audited into liquidation… it happens. I think it’s fair to say I am the furthest thing from a model student. After many hefty application processes, I was offered an internship on the sales team with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Ltd. I did not know a thing about sales or renewable energy, all I knew is that I did not want to be out in the big bad world after three years at college so this option suited me perfectly. I was genuinely terrified of the work that would be expected of me and the amount of excel sheets that would be thrown my way. (I got a G grade on my first excel exam in first year of Commerce, so we’ll just let that sit right there) I am extremely grateful to have gained so much experience in the corporate world before I have even left college. I often love to share my advice on getting the most from your internship as I am someone who is not extremely academic which is something a lot of people worry about. There are plenty of different Internship Progammes to choose from and so many benefits of the internship experience people are not aware of. Below I have outlined 5 pieces of advice to help you make the most of your internship experience
ANALYSE THE COMPANY CULTURE
Spend the first few weeks getting to know everyone on the team and getting a feel of the group dynamics and how your team work. It is then essential to adapt your behaviour and how you approach your day to day tasks to how your team works.
ALWAYS ASK FOR HELP IF NEEDED
This is something a lot of people are very scared to do. When you begin your internship you are not expected to be able to know how to do any part of the job, therefore you will have to learn. Asking for help demonstrates confidence and modesty. Your managers and colleagues will be grateful that you want to learn and it also saves a lot of hassle in the long run when your managers do not have to spend time correcting a mistake of yours.
BE ENTHUSIASTIC!!
Being an intern can be quite boring. You will be given the tasks no one in the office ever wants to have to do. However, always offer your assistance with a smile on your face and people will begin to appreciate you. Having a positive attitude to your work once again demonstrates that you are willing to learn and just how diligent you are.
USE YOUR VOICE
If you have an opinion on something and think it will really help positively then don’t’ be afraid to say it. Even though you’re an intern, you’re still as much a part of the team as anyone else and your advice could be extremely useful. This will also boost your confidence and if you can suggest a useful idea to the team then you have nothing to lose.
TAKE INITIATIVE
When given a task to do, trust is being put in you and you are most likely seen as capable enough to carry out the task. If there is a deadline looming and no one seems to be working towards this deadline, offer your assistance. Once again this will demonstrate your enthusiasm.
JUST REMEMBER
Nothing is too ambitious. You will find yourself in the most wonderful situations purely by putting yourself out there. With a bit of determination and self-belief you will get to exactly where you want to be.

On Monday I am writing my last exam and doing my last OSCE for my Middle Clinical Rotations ! This is very clearly a blog post borne out of unabashed procrastination. #sorrynotsorry
Finishing my middle clinical rotations is a big deal though ! It means that have successfully completed another year and a half of my degree !
The next step is : Student Internship !
I have to complete my elective first, one month in adult neurosurgery, but immediately following that I begin my journey towards the ends ! #SI
At my university , the last 18 months of the medical degree are spent as a student intern (SI). We are expected to function at the level of interns. After that we graduate and become contributing members of society ! #yay
We rotate through all the medical disciplines in hospital and don’t have any theory classes (ever again!). Of course we’ll still get formal tutorials , have tests and OSCES after every rotation but our teaching is purely clinically based.
The prospect of being an SI is definitely nerve-wracking ! Student internship officially signals the beginning of the end of my journey towards my MB,ChB degree! I’ve had a tumultuous experience this past year and I am hoping that the changes I made were for the better and have far more desirable outcomes 😀
My last theory class was some time ago during the Ethics module. There is a tradition at my university that is upheld where fifth year students dress up as special characters on the last day class. In ode to Harry Potter , I dressed up as Lord Voldemort’s most loyal lieutenant, Bellatrix Lestrange ! It was a fantastic day and I thoroughly enjoyed myself !

Lily Update!
(Because my commitment to regular blogging has been shockingly abhorrent) !
The last six months of my life have been challenging. So many overlapping and intersecting struggles seemed to present themselves (at the same time #ironically) and I had to take some time to do genuine introspection and critical self-reflection.
I am glad that I did because the alternative would have been a slow and steady descent into depression and worsening of my anxiety.
I am proud of the seemingly harsh but prudent steps that I took in order to take charge of my mental health.
I decided that my mental health mattered more to me. In order to carry on with my life and ensure future success, I had to bear responsibility for my mental well-being. My zeal and enthusiastic promotion of self-love and self-care have now expanded to include self-analysis and self-truth. Honestly , it has been a lot of “self” to deal with.
Being an adult is hard . . . sigh.
I am also 22 years old now ! My future still looks bright and hopefully it stays that way #LilyAllen
I have two beautiful tuxedo cats named Jasmine Fleur & Babette Lafayette . Yes, their names are French. They are very interesting creatures. I think they like me but honestly it is so difficult to tell sometimes.
Anyway . . . My fifth year dance happened some time ago as well 🙂 ! Below are some pictures of myself along with mybest friends. I’m the one in blue #haha ! I had the best night and I would love to do it all over again . Being adequately inebriated was a wonderful part of the experience 🙂 ❤
I hope to blog again and soon ! I cannot, however, promise because life usually just “happens” . . . sigh.
Until next time !
Lots Of Lily Love ❤ ❤ ❤ (LOLL)
