Milestone Monday
On this date, September 9, in 1543, Mary Stuart, at nine months old, was crowned "Queen of Scots" in the central Scottish town of Stirling, and would remain queen until her forced abdication in 1567. A tragic figure, Mary would ultimately be executed in 1587 as a threat to the reign of her regal cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Mary's courage at her execution helped establish her popular image as the heroic victim in a dramatic tragedy.
To commemorate the occasion of Mary's infant coronation, we present plates from John Skelton’s 1893 work Mary Stuart, Skelton’s third work on Mary, Queen of Scots, all advocating for a sympathetic view of Mary as a heroic victim. Mary Stuart was printed and published in an edition of 200 copies for Europe (with an additional 100 “with a duplicate series of plates … for America”) by Boussod, Valadon & Co. in Asnières-sur-Sein, a township in Île-de-France just north-west of Paris.

(  sophie skelton , 30 , she/her , cis woman , stuart 4  ) - have you seen  kenna stuart ? we’ve heard through the grapevine that they’re  fierce  but also  unruly. when you think of them , you think of  the wilderness living within her bones ; absentmindedly twirling a dagger in her hand ; loving and hating with an equal ferocity ; and her hair dancing like flames in the wind.
Tumblr media
basic information.
full name: kenna stuart. name meaning: fire born. age: thirty. date of birth: march 29th. astrological sign: aries. gender & pronouns: cis woman , she / her. orientation: biromantic , bisexual. spoken languages: english , gaelic , latin , spanish , bits and pieces of other languages. title: princess of scotland. martial status: unwed , unbetrothed.
personality.
positive: fierce ,  courageous ,  forthright , steadfast ,  devoted. negative: obstinate ,  unruly , demanding , prideful , impulsive. moral alignment: chaotic good. temperament: chloric. mbti: estp  -  the  entrepreneur.
history.
a middle child could easily be forgotten but from the moment kenna entered the world she demanded attention. her loud cries echoed through the palace near constantly. it was said that if she was ignored for even a moment that'd she burst into tears. the moment she learned to walk she refused to sit still, constantly following after either of her parents. only around them would kenna sit, even if it meant listening to them speak with their advisors for hours. if her parents were busy, she'd wander off on her own. the older she got, the worse it became. suffice to say there were more than a few incidents during her life where princess kenna was declared missing only to be found a few hours later somewhere on the palace grounds or wandering back home after exploring on her own.
some of her restlessness quieted when a sword was placed in her hand. her father had summoned the best commander in the scottish army to train his daughter, someone who would become the most important non-familial mentor in kenna's life. it was hardly a surprise that she took to sword fighting with ease, becoming a skilled and deadly fighter, rivaling the greatest swords of scotland despite being younger than them.
kenna left to serve in the military once she was old enough. she wanted to further her skills and defend the land she held so dear. being away from her family was difficult at first, but the purpose the army gave her quickly overshadowed that. her dedication, however, didn't silence her nature. kenna wasn't afraid to object to or simply not follow orders from her superior officers or jump to the defense of anyone she felt was being treated unjustly. her title kept her from being kicked out of the army but it did prevent any promotions, despite having the skill to be a high ranking officer.
she eventually stepped away from the military but rather than return home she embarked on a few years of travel. up until then, scotland was all she'd known and she wanted to see more of the world. kenna rotated between traveling as a princess and masking her identity, pretending to be a scottish noble or even a commoner. she loved how it let her see different versions of the world while remaining under the radar. plus she was able to meet more people. all information she garnered was dutifully sent back to scotland and on occasion she served as an ambassador while visiting other royal courts.
eventually kenna was summoned back to scotland. her homecoming was largely celebrated across scotland. kenna eagerly recounted her adventures abroad for all who'd listen, though some tales she kept to herself, but never again did she feel the pull to leave scotland again. the highlands were her home, and she never wanted to leave again.
when they were summoned to france, kenna had little desire to go. she knew the importance of securing alliances for scotland, and while she wasn't opposed to marrying, she worried that any marriage for herself would force her to leave scotland for good. she'd seen the world enough. all she desired was a quiet life, likely serving as her elder sister's protector, serving on her council, or defending their borders. however, as more secrets from within the stuart household emerge the more kenna began questioning what her eventual role would be.
headcanons.
an expert swordswoman. she's rarely seen without at least her sword or daggers, often both.
she doesn't mind dressing up, even enjoys it for certain events, but she's far more comfortable in casual clothes be it a dress or a shirt and pants. back home
kenna isn't someone who can stay inside or in one place for long. it's why she first felt the pull to travel the world. while that desire is gone, her restlessness remains. she needs to be outside, getting lost in the woods and exploring. it has made being in france difficult for her.
she has a very strong sense of justice and won't hesitate to speak up when she feels like someone is acting unjust. has led to her jumping to other's defense with little question. she doesn't have much tact when doing so, which has caused a fair share of fights.
so, so impulsive and reckless. some say she doesn't know what danger is. she's a big believer in acting first and thinking later along with asking for forgiveness over permission. much to the chagrin of many.
a true ride or die friend !! once she gives someone her trust and friendship, they have it unless they give her a reason to revoke it. kenna would do anything for her friends, no questions asked. that being said, if she is betrayed she doesn't forget or forgive. she will not put herself in the position to be hurt again by the same person.
there is no one more important to kenna than her family and nothing more important to her than scotland. she would also do anything for them without question and will jump to their defense without hesitation. she definitely views herself as their protector despite knowing they're all capable of defending themselves.
wanted connections.
people she met traveling ›› kenna traveled, mainly across europe but could've gone elsewhere too, for a few years. tons of possible dynamics and lots of potential for drama! it's also possible that some didn't know she was a princess and thought she was a noble/commoner since kenna did hide her identity occasionally. now that they're in france the truth would be revealed.
enemies ›› with her personality, it isn't difficult for kenna to get under people's skin and for people to get under hers.
suitor(s) ›› despite not being next in line for the throne, kenna is considered a valuable marriage candidate for those looking to ally with scotland.

With the aid of his girlfriend, Phyllis Potter, and best friend, Loomis, Grimm enters a Manhattan bank dressed as a clown, creates a hostage situation and executes a flawless robbery. The only thing left for the trio to do is make their getaway out of the city and to the airport. It sounds simple enough, but it seems that fate deserts them immediately after the bank heist. One mishap after another conspires to keep these robbers from reaching freedom. Credits: TheMovieDb. Bill Murray, Gena Davis and Randy Quaid were a great trio. Edit for new review: Still one of my personal favorite comedies, seen this one numerous times and still have a good time with this trio and the oddball things that happen to them on their journey to the airport. Murray, Davis and Quaid are great together as well as Jason Robards as the frustrated police chief. **4.25/5**

Mary, Queen of Scots, Monday
On this day, the second of May, in 1568, Mary Stuart, aided by her jailor’s family, escaped after nearly a year of imprisonment in Lochleven Castle.
To commemorate this occasion, we present plates from John Skelton’s 1893 work Mary Stuart, Skelton’s third work on Mary, Queen of Scots, all advocating for a sympathetic view of Mary as a heroic victim. Mary Stuart was printed and published in an edition of 200 copies for Europe (with an additional 100 “with a duplicate series of plates ... for America”) by Boussod, Valadon & Co. in Asnières-sur-Sein, a township in Île-de-France just north-west of Paris.
The publishing company, formerly Goupil & Cie., is best known for its association with Galerie Goupil and the auction and exhibition of contemporary art. With branches in New York, London, Berlin, Vienna, and Brussels, Goupil was a dominant force in the 19th century art market. The business was initially established in 1827 by Jean-Baptiste Michel Adolphe Goupil as a print publishing firm. Goupil retired from the business in 1884, leaving his partner Léon Boussod and Boussod’s son-in-law René Valadon in charge of the business. In 1886, Boussod established the photographic studio and printing press at Asnières where Mary Stuart would eventually be printed.
Mary’s life was beset with scandal and tragedy. After her betrothal to Henry VIII’s son Edward fell apart, she was sent to France at the age of five to eventually wed the Dauphin, Francis II, two years her junior. They married once the Dauphin came of age, but Francis died of an infection and Mary found herself widowed at 18. Mary returned to Scotland and was eventually married to her cousin, Henry Stuart, Earl of Darnley, generally described as a rageful, alcoholic, syphilitic womanizer.
Darnley was killed under suspicious circumstances in January of 1567. Mary herself was suspected, as was James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell. Bothwell was eventually tried and acquitted in April, but the marriage of Bothwell and Mary only weeks after the trial caused quite a controversy. The Scottish nobility turned on Mary and Bothwell, leading to her imprisonment and the abdication of the throne. Mary fled to England, hoping to find an ally in her cousin Queen Elizabeth. Instead, she was held prisoner (albeit rather lavishly) for the new two decades. She was executed in 1587 after being found guilty of treason.
