I'm doing another lingerie history throwback post, this time about the short lived diffusion line, L'Agent by Agent Provocateur.
L'Agent launched in 2013, when diffusion lines for luxury labels had become the norm in the fashion industry. These younger sibling brands offered goods at more accessible - though still expensive! -price points that allowed luxury brands to court aspirational shoppers without damaging the perception of exclusivity for their main lines. L'Agent followed this same strategy, with prices that were roughly 50% cheaper than AP.
Although many diffusion lines were eventually phased out, I think there were other reasons for L'Agent's doomed history, including the fact that it was such a latecomer to the diffusion game. Most popular diffusion lines at the time had launched more than a decade earlier and at this point, were considering shuttering operations. D&G closed in 2011, Marc by Marc Jacobs in 2015, Burberry Brit in 2016. While diffusion lines allowed luxury brands to build a larger, younger customer base, they also demanded more administrative and marketing resources and for many brands, they failed to differentiate themselves enough from main lines, dragging down that perceived luxury prestige.
Which brings me to my next point. A number of L'Agent's designs were clearly reworked versions of AP's designs. Obviously they were not exactly the same and the materials were different - but the latter is not something you can really appreciate when you're shopping online. Although AP digitally isolated L'Agent into an entirely different website, which it did not do with Soirée*, I feel its own designs were so distinctive, that didn't matter. At certain angles, I can't even tell the difference between L'Agent's Danita and AP's classic, Nikita.

While L'Agent was meant to be more youthful than AP, its early collections, especially the sets that did not crib from beloved AP designs, lacked a strong, cohesive voice. Despite this, L'Agent expanded rapidly, opening its own stores with what must have been a considerable outlay of capital. Here's an image of L'Agent's fourth store, which opened in Montreal in 2015.

Honestly, this Victoria's Secret-esque retail environment, nothing like the lush, boudoir-vibes of AP boutiques and their shop girls in their pink Westwood uniforms, strikes me as less fun and cheeky and more cheap and tacky - which is a shame because their lingerie was much better than what you could pick up at a VS.

While I didn't feel compelled to purchase a L'Agent set, I did pick up a pair of Idalia knickers for prosperity's sake. You can see the top photo of this post for the whole set. The panty has a number of costlier details such as picot edging, hidden seams, i.e. no gusset "pocket", and a two-toned lace. The stitches on the narrow elastics are actually three-point zigzags so they're tiny. However, the materials are a huge step down from AP. The lace feels stiffer and rougher and while the picot is cute, it irritates my skin a little.

In contrast to L'Agent, diffusion lines that were more successful were those that meaningfully created a "conversation" with the main line while having its own distinct voice. For example, I could always recognize a McQ piece, even if it was more editorial. They often repurposed elements you'd see on the Alexander McQueen runway into more streamlined, streetwear inspired pieces such that you'd never mistake a McQ piece for an Alexander McQueen RTW piece. McQ persisted through the 2010s and it was only in 2022 that the line was "suspended."

In addition to struggling to find its own voice, financial troubles at AP, which would eventually lead to the company's bankruptcy, proved to be the final nail in L'Agent's coffin. By late 2016, AP announced that it would be downsizing both stores and staff at its headquarters by a brutal 30% and L'Agent was definitely in the cross-hairs. L'Agent bit the dust the following year - it held a final sale for the 2017 post-holiday season and by February 2018, it was all over.
Despite this, I feel like L'Agent lives on. Current AP lines like Fia, Laily, Whinette and Yara all have a L'Agent vibe to me. Which is to say, the luxurious details I associated with older AP sets have increased in price at AP while L'Agent-ish sets that have simpler designs and cheaper materials have created a lower tier to AP's lingerie without actually being cheaper than the cheapest AP sets back in the day. In this way, the inflation of AP's prices are better hidden from the consumer. Can you tell from the photos below which model is wearing L'Agent and which is wearing AP's Fia?

In 2021, AP tried its hand again at the diffusion game with its "All Hours" line. This one was much shorter lived and you can read an analysis about its failure on The Lingerie Addict. Only the Lucky line survives in an "Anytime" collection.
Interestingly enough, in 2024, we are starting to see the return of the diffusion line. Society has not emerged from the pandemic unscathed and the cost of living crisis as well as punitive measures against workers have crushed the spending power of aspirational shoppers. Meanwhile, capitalists have only gotten richer. As a result, prices in the luxury sector have rocketed skyward as brands zero in on their rosters of VICs (Very Important Clients) with specialized services and double down on exclusivity. But it seems like younger brands like Aries, that may lack the rolodex and capital of more established houses, are once again, returning to the diffusion line while older lines like Comme des Garcons' Play appear to be selling well.
Personally, I'm not sure if we'll ever see a diffusion line from AP again. Because AP's brand is already youthful, playful and cheeky and no one wants expensive basics from a brand like AP, there is nowhere for an AP diffusion line to go. But the fallout of the decimation of the middle class is still playing out. And we will see if AP has what it takes to respond to this tread of increasing income inequality and financial precarity.
* While brands were launching diffusion lines, some also launched higher-tier "demi-couture" lines like Burberry Prorsum that featured more expensive and experimental materials and fashion forward, editorial designs - AP pursued this tactic as well with its Soirée line which launched earlier than L'Agent in 2009.

Air Force selects JetZero for blended-wing body prototype plane
The company says the airplane will have its first flight in 2027.

The U.S. Air Force has chosen California startup JetZero to build and test a wing-shaped airplane, which may influence the design of the service’s future mobility planes.
The service announced the winner of a Defense Innovation Unit-led competition for a blended-wing body prototype on Tuesday at an Air & Space Forces Association event.
“This is a prototype demonstration project that's intended to accelerate the next generation of what may be the large aircraft fleet that the Air Force needs in the future. It's a streamlined design, different significantly from traditional tube and wing design, and it will improve aerodynamic efficiency and mission capability,” said Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall.
JetZero said in April it was partnering with Northrop Grumman on a blended-wing tanker design, called Z-5, which could position the company to build the Air Force’s future aerial refueler, NGAS, and its next-gen airlifter, NGAL.
However, the JetZero prototype is just a “demonstrator,” and shouldn’t be linked directly to NGAS or NGAL, said Maj. Gen. Albert Miller, Air Mobility Command’s director of strategy, plans, requirements, and programs.
“There's no presumption, right, that this is necessarily the answer for NGAS, but we think that it could be informative in this process,” Miller said. “We are not even to the [analysis of alternatives] stage for NGAS so it would be very premature to say that this is the NGAS solution.”

The Air Force is considering a blended-wing design for future aircraft because it’s much more fuel efficient than traditional airframes. The JetZero offering is estimated to carry twice the fuel of a Boeing KC-46 tanker.
Fuel efficiency is needed in the Indo-Pacific, as “operational energy will be the margin of victory in a near-peer conflict,” said Ravi Chaudhary, assistant Air Force secretary for energy, installations, and environment.
“This is about getting back to basics with what airpower delivers for the joint fight: speed, range, endurance and flexibility, but it's also about efficiency, because in the Indo-Pacific, we expend a little more gas, we need a little more efficiency, the distances a little bit longer,” Chaudhary said.
A blended-wing body aircraft can operate for longer distances and land on shorter runaways, making it more lethal and maneuverable for Air Mobility Command and the joint force, Miller said.
“It is the capability of being able to land someplace on a much shorter runway and pick up a casualty and fly them back to the care that they need. It is the capability of being able to get the same offload of fuel to a critical receiver when and where they need it, maybe from a greater distance because we've seen this in the past where the tanker fleets get pushed back so that the kinetic force can be pushed forward,” Miller said.
JetZero will receive $235 million over the next four years to build and test the prototype—with plans for a first flight in 2027.

Even though it may be expensive for retailers, to be inclusive as many beauty brands have found out when expanding or starting their foundation range, it will pay off in the long run to have an image that’s more in line with reality. The average size of a woman in the UK is the size 14-16 so not being able to cater to those customers is just losing money. There’s also a case study to be made on how hard it is to find plus size second hand garments and how it becomes more of an exclusive space in luxury.
I’m also reminded of Christian Siriano, who won Project Runway in 2007 and how because he caters to a wide amount of women (and non-women) and their bodies his brand is associated with inclusivity. That doesn’t mean it’s seen as “cool” to the in group but it doesn’t have to be. Because he has his audience and clientele.

Back to the thoughts on fashion at large, in the SS24 womenswear season of Fashion Week, 1% of the models were plus size according to The Vogue Business Spring/Summer 2024 size inclusivity report. The conglomerates (LVMH and Kering) are just not representing the average young woman and these leans into quiet luxury and in the cost of living crisis where brands are going back to extreme craftsmanship or their roots, just means more 2000s sleek black pants.

This is also related to the conversation about Sean McGirr becoming the new Creative Director of Alexander McQueen which on Vogue Business was a piece titled Why are so many creative directors white men?. A few quotes from this...
“The call is coming from inside the house, and it’s from the top,” says stylist and Perfect Magazine’s creative director Jeanie Annan-Lewin. “And, the people who are at the top pay very little attention to women and pay absolutely no attention to POCs. And, if you’re a woman and a POC, it’s kind of game over.”

"Fashion documentarian and writer Rian Phin believes the homogenisation of fashion is intentional. “Many of the men at the forefront of fashion aren’t unqualified for their positions — they have valid, progressive and thoughtful visions of the future of fashion. But, the active exclusion of the visions of women and creatives of colour may be in order to maintain a singular vision of fashion.” She adds: “Conglomerates may be trying to streamline customers in this way, which may make it easier to organise people into shoppers, but excludes more broad visions of fashion that reflect diverse visions of society. It may also be in their interests to exclude these voices, so that their power and singular storytelling goes unchallenged and unquestioned by people whose work could critique that kind of power.”
This article titled 'I love my midriff': why flaunting your tummy with a crop top in 2023' also goes into the appeal of seeing these very obvious body shapes in ways that we wouldn't have seen in 2010 or 2005.
"In 2023, by contrast, the theory is stomachs can come in all shapes and sizes. Ed Conway, founder of fitness studio Fit As in Leyton, east London, reports that while men feel pressure to have a six pack, many women actively avoid this look."
In the previous years mentioned, the culture, especially British culture was more fatphobic (*this was also class related) and plus size clothing was unfashionable. Now because youth culture is dominated by the internet (with America leading in the Anglosphere), it's pushed British-culture-body-conservatism back.
*I see social media as a powerful force for pushing back against certain things in fashion and in larger society. A lot of people have influence, the fact that anyone can post their body and not be ashamed is not something that could be done in 2005. They would have had had to have been on television exposing themselves to a more hostile society. Today, it can still be hostile but young people can find communities through posting :^)
My blind spots for this were male plus size models, inclusivity in male fashion and beauty. Maybe that's for another time. One of the male models in that Vogue Business SS24 sizing piece did say...
Plus-size model James Corbin says he wasn’t approached to walk any shows in London this season — where both menswear and womenswear collections were presented. "Not many shows were inclusive enough to have a plus-size male model.”

The VC-10 wasn't really a bad plane, it was just an overengineered behemoth that was meant to serve routes for an empire that didn't exist anymore, hence a focus on rough runway and poorly equipped airport operations, which made the plane heavier and more expensive to operate (and with less passengers and range) than the more streamlined 707, which always took into account flying from and into optimal airports, as Boeing engineers knew the world was modernizing for the jet age.
