I don't know what I'd do if I lived in another municipality cause my home supporters have all been absolute angels throughout the years, meanwhile just a stonesthrow away the municipality next door have so many horror stories of theirs that it's as much a well known of a fact as that the sky is blue.
(I'm glad painkillers worked and that my sleep schedule has me awake during daytime right now, cause now home support could help me tidy up the kitchen, start laundry, vacuum and tidy up my room and get the mail checked. I thought I wouldn't manage but I'm glad I pushed through regardless cause it did wonders for my mood and overall sanity.)

Thankfully, adventurer-type work here is plentiful. All know of somebody in need, and a quick round of chitchat with nearby folk quickly turns up a job otherwise. One thing leading to another, I delivered a pumpkin, thinned a coblyn infestation, and found myself in front of Wystan, a successful self-made upstart from Stonesthrow of all places. He wished to found businesses with fair labor practices and wages for those living in the same poverty he did. Of course, this wretched city instantly crushed those noble dreams.
I did the best I could, but unfortunately that only meant saving him from an attack by the Brass Blades. The local guard! Attacking a lawful citizen! They were under orders of one Lolorito (another Lalafell..?), who I quickly learned is part of a faction whose wealth truly runs Ul'dah. The white-haired Hyur returned, just slightly too late, and quipped about my presence in these situations. But his own sent me into another bout of aether sickness, and I saw… his past? If these visions are more than dreams, then…
Wystan fled from Thanalan, and directed me to seek counsel from Momodi. She commended my actions, and offered me permanent accommodation at her establishment. She is truly a woman of her word, giving as much as she gets, and her passion for her city moves me.
I shall go enjoy my rest on a bed my size.

Do you have any opinions on Nanamo Ul namo?
Yes! That I need to make a character to smooch her! (Half joke)
But on a genuine note, yes.
I love Nanamo. Like I'm putting that out there right here at the start. I love her so much.
In story, I think she's had a really rough time of it. I think her position is that of being wholly trapped between a rock and a hard place and now that she's realised that, she's trying to find a chisel.
Nanamo spends all of the story with her heart in the right place. She wants to do right by the people of Ul'dah, by the Ala Mhigans on her doorstep, by the Domans that arrive with their cap in hand. And she is blocked at each turn by a system she didn't set up and cannot seem to abolish (& the one time she tried, she nearly got murdered!)
On a meta level, I think she suffers from the game Devs seeming desire not to change much about the starting cities, hence her consistently suggesting "How about we improve things somewhat?" Only to be blocked and forced into working alongside Lolorito. Which, while it helps improve things, it also maintains the status quo. (On a game dev level, I get it! If things in Ul'dah changed and improved, they'd need to get rid of the refugee camps in stonesthrow (or at least the people) & possibly even empty out Little Ala Mhigo, depending! Those are quite big world changes, especially to make on code that's been there from 2.0, and could easily cause problems! From a storytelling perspective, it's frustrating to constantly see Nanamo try and get blocked at every turn by random bs!)
I also loved doing the variant dungeon with her! I think it was a good look into her as a person (especially since I know the Tank Quests in EW gave us a look into Kan-E and I'm assuming whatever role quest took place in Limsa gave us a glimpse of Merlwyb, but there was no such problems in Ul'dah and they teamed up with Ala Mhigo in the healer quests!) And added quite a bit of depth to her character, about how she came to power young and has had to learn on the job, while also consistently defending herself from the backstabbing of those she should have been able to trust.
All in all, to end my rambling:
Nanamo is a sweetheart, she deserves a hug, a blanket and a hot chocolate and to let us murder the monatarists in order to make her life significantly easier. (& again, I really need to make a character that gets to smooch her!)

just killed general grievous in my clone wars ffg campaign. jack @demi-demilich as dm, our friend daisy playing jedi knight allista cinnastar and me playing clone commander stonesthrow. kind of in shock that we managed to pull that off.
we only BARELY fucking succeeded. our submarine (underwater encounter on an ocean planet, we were defending a facility processing an ingredient for bacta) was down to 1 remaining hull trauma, and so was grevious’ sub. his had significantly more hull points than ours (35 to our 8) but we somehow managed to whittle him down in a tense chase. it was all fucking dice rolls and managing multiple crits, eventually disabling the sub and blasting it to smithereens.
allista kept rolling dark pips to manifest her force powers, and so spent the entire encounter screaming and falling to the dark side just to keep up with grievous. skin paler, eyes tinted yellow. stonesthrow was too preoccupied with gunning him down to process how bad it was getting for her in the moment. but we goddamn did it, had some trauma bonding and an ill-timed first kiss back on the cruiser afterwards.
went back to coruscant to be greeted by the jedi high council, the senate, palpatine, plus the coruscant and senate guards in full parade form when we landed. presented palps and the council with grevious’ mask, got bad vibes from palps, and both got awarded a medal of valor.
and now jack has to completely rewrite canon because we somehow ended grevious IN THE FIRST YEAR OF THE WAR.
we’ve mostly been running background missions to main tcw plot points and arcs in this campaign, but now it’s completely gone off the fucking rails. I’m so FUCKING excited to see what jack cooks up for us.
#sorry for the long post I’m just so WIRED after this session absksbsnsjssnsj#it was so much longer than usual and so fucking good#mark this down as one of my proudest ttrpg moments#personal#sarah plays dnd#it’s not dnd but that’s my tag for ttrpg shit so ahsksbsksjsnsns

a stone's throw from justice
For FFXIVWrite Day 3, a free day. I spent the free day itself starting my second-last alt concept, to not miss out on the 10th anniversary things, so have a snippet of her msq so far. Linza, early A Realm Reborn, ~1000 words. Canon-typical xenophobia/discrimination, canon-typical violence. A few lines have been taken from the lv 9 main scenario quest “Way Down in the Hole”.
Ice to halt corruption, fire to cleanse, lightning to expel sin: it would be simpler if those could be used on Ul’dah.
Wystan has the right idea.
Linza has had years of practice keeping her face neutral, and people who don’t know Au Ra have mentioned that her scales distract the eye and make her hard to read besides. She looks politely interested while Zuzumeda babbles on about Wystan’s audacity.
She would call it audacious.
She’d left Gelen’s Dint to try to bring change, but it’s taking time, and more than time it’s taking dozens of odd jobs, trying to curry favor with people who maybe haven’t ever spent much time in person with an Au Ra and think she’s a fun novelty. They don’t question her accent: after all, it’s what they’re used to hearing, isn’t it? And they give her work that they might not have, if she looked Ala Mhigan, because give one refugee fair pay and you’ll have to give them all fair pay.
“Thank you,” she says, inclining her head to Zuzumeda. “I’d appreciate the work.”
Zuzumeda waves her off, and she makes her way south. It’s a mild day, this early in the morning. As she walks she tries to remember if she knows Wystan at all, but more likely it’ll be a question of him remembering her.
Still. An Ala Mhigan-owned and -operated business, and moreover that business being a mine of rich ore? That’s the shortcut Linza hasn’t had the luck to find. It’s fitting, maybe, that it’s underneath the ruins of Sil’dih. She hopes the spirits of the Sil’dihns are at peace, but if they’re not, she likes to think that perhaps this is their blessing.
She does recognize Wystan, actually. Huge spectacles and an earnest face; he’s come by Gelen’s Dint a time or two, once to tell them about a school that a friend of his had started in Stonesthrow. Linza and a few of the others were too old for it, by then, but the younglings had been able to spend more time with other children their own age, and it had freed Master Keene and Mistress Stark up from teaching.
Wystan’s face brightens when he sees her. “Good day, uh—I’m sorry. Linda? Liza?”
It’s damn close, for a man who’s spoken to her perhaps three times, and not within the last six months. “Linza,” she says.
He nods. “Did you come to join the venture? I’m sorry, but you’re too late.”
“You’ve got enough people already?” It had better not be her size, or his chivalry. She might be a fulm shorter than him, but her staff isn’t just for walking, or even hitting people with in a pinch.
Wystan grins. “Some Brass Blades looking for extra coin volunteered.”
She doesn’t, particularly, trust the Brass Blades, but Wystan has had more dealings with them than she has, and he’s had those dealings while much more obviously a refugee and not a traveler. “Well. All right.”
“But if you’re here you must be looking for coin,” he says, the grin falling off his face. “I wish—are things all right?”
Linza gestures around. The Coffer and Coffin would probably be considered a dive most other places, but it has four wooden walls and a real floor. It has a door and windows, and a second story, and it’s big enough that even someone as tall as Jofrid could lie down with all his limbs spread out and not even come close to hitting a wall with any of them. “Same as always,” she says.
“Not for long,” Wystan says, lighting up again. “They say with enough money you can change the laws here, so I’m going to make a fortune and do just that.”
“You’ve had the Spinner’s own luck.” Linza doesn’t begrudge him: she’s just pointing it out.
He nods. “It’s the blessing we’ve needed for so long—honest work for our people, and fair pay to go with it, and then no child will ever have to grow up in Stonesthrow again.”
She bows with her hand over her heart. “I won’t keep you from your mine, then.”
“You should—”
A man in a Brass Blade’s mail bursts in, shouting triumphantly about the mine.
“Come with me!” Wystan says. “It’s history in the making.”
The Brass Blade looks over Linza, top to toe. He’s twice her size, probably, and she can see the moment he dismisses her.
Half a bell later, that’s his mistake. The Brass Blades turn on Wystan, because his coin wasn’t enough to get them to betray their lords and masters in the Syndicate. They beat him, and taunt him, and knock him bruised and bleeding into Soot Creek.
Linza had her staff out already, but she’d been using it to walk with, not expecting an ambush, and aether crawls when she’s using it for destruction. Wystan is already sobbing for breath in the shallow, muddy water when the first lightning bolt cracks down out of the cloudless sky.
Syndicate, hells. Wystan’s plan had been a good one. It was gentle, it was restrained. It would have let everything continue as it was, except with Ul’dah a better place for the people who live in it. In the long term, it’s probably even the right plan. Linza still believes it.
In the short term, thunder booms off the walls of the canyon, the echoes bouncing from wall to wall and setting even the air in Linza’s lungs to rattling. There are scorch marks on the ancient stone. Wystan sits up, haltingly and pained.
“Let’s get out of here,” Linza says, switching her grip on her staff and hammering down the rage. Stone beneath her, water beside her—the flow of gentler elements, nourishing ones.
That’s when the black-robed figure shows up again.
Linza draws in a deep breath, water and wind slipping away from her again, and lets the fire bloom.
