Tombs Rich in Artifacts Discovered in Cyprus

An archaeological expedition from Sweden's University of Gothenburg has uncovered tombs rich in artifacts and antiquities in Cyprus that makes the discovery among the richest ever found in the Mediterranean region.

Peter Fischer, the leader of the expedition and a professor of archaeology at the University of Gothenburg, said “considering the richness of the grave goods, it is a reasonable assumption that these were royal tombs, even though we do not know much about the form of government practiced in the city at the time."

Fischer believes that the artifacts, found just outside the Bronze Age trading city of Hala Sultan Tekke, indicate the tombs' occupants ruled the city, which was a center for copper trade between 1500–1300 BCE. The tombs, located outside the 50-hectare city, consist of underground chambers of varying sizes, accessed via a narrow passage from the surface.

Cyprus' Department of Antiquities, in an update posted to their website, noted: "The city’s wealth seems to have been based on the production of copper and trade with near and distant cultures. Judging by the rich burial gifts, the tombs belonged to families of the city’s ruling class who took part in the export of copper and intercultural trade."

Unearthed artifacts include imports from Egypt, Baltic region

The Swedish Söderberg expedition has been carrying out excavations in Hala Sultan Tekke near the city of Larnaca on the south coast of Cyprus since 2010. Though the expedition has previously found chamber tombs with valuable grave goods, the latest discovery is unprecedented given the superb quality and quantity of artifacts.

“We found more than 500 complete artifacts distributed among two tombs. Many of the artifacts consist of precious metals, gems, ivory and high-quality ceramics," Fischer said.

About half of the artifacts unearthed during the expedition are believed to have been imported from different civilizations. For example, gold and ivory came from Egypt while precious stones, such as blue lapis lazuli, dark red carnelian and blue-green turquoise, were imported from Afghanistan, India and Sinai respectively. Amber objects from the Baltic region were also found among the artifacts.

The Department of Antiquities said that three chamber tombs, preliminarily dated to the 14th century BC, were exposed. While one of them had been looted, most likely in the 19th century AD, the other two were "undisturbed", apart from the collapse of their chambers.

Items recovered from those include locally produced pottery and ornaments and numerous items of jewelry such as diadems, which are ornamental headbands. Embossed images of bulls, gazelles, lions and flowers adorn the diadems. Bronze weapons, some inlaid with ivory, were also recovered as well as a gold-framed seal made of the hard mineral hematite with inscriptions of gods and rulers.

"Several items of ivory and faience are imports from Egypt during the famous 18th Dynasty, the time of the well-known pharaohs Thutmose III, Amenophis IV (Akhenaten) and his wife Nefertiti," said the department.

The excavation team used magnetometers, a type of instrument that can produce images showing objects and structures up to two meters beneath the surface, to carry out their expedition, according to the university.

Besides artifacts, the research team also unearthed several well-preserved skeletons in the tombs including one of a woman surrounded by dozens of ceramic vessels, jewelry and a round bronze mirror. A one-year-old child with a ceramic toy also lay beside her.

When he breathes the air on the western coast of the Sea of Fallen Stars for the first time, he almost weeps. So far from Thay, the skies are clearer, brighter blue. There is so much sky beyond the rocky cliffs and cruel stone walls and bleak darkness.

By now, his master’s grand manor must be nothing but smoldering embers and unnatural corpses finally given rest. When the master died, so did every last undead servant that staffed the wretched place, collapsed over whatever task they tended when the magic animating them fizzled out. He left behind a mausoleum, fled under cover of night, with as many valuables as he could conceivably carry to pay his way to Aglarond.

It was not an easy journey. His master had him trained in all manner of art and conversation, fine literature and the other myriad entertainments befitting the highest class of concubine, but none of those arts included the means to survive on his own. He could only guess which of the things he grabbed in his blind panic were actually of worth. The intricacies of economics are not terribly important to the work of a disgustingly wealthy man’s personal whore, and so he never learned them. He didn’t have much trouble, at least, when he was handing over fist-sized jewels for something more discreet to wear than the skimpy finery his master preferred for him. The merchant was left gawking at the pile of fine silk and gold ornaments he left behind. His new clothing is roughspun, dull, and poorly fitted, but he does not stand out beneath the drab grey hood, which is exactly what he wanted.

There are no doubt enough riches left behind in the smoking ruin of that cage to fill a dragon’s hoard and then some, and he takes a grim satisfaction in knowing that most of them likely burned to nothing the same as the body of the man who kept him prisoner.

By the time he made it to Aglarond, his bag was significantly lighter. It was a long trek, and he traded cut jewels and mithril chains, candlesticks and gilded mirrors for food, transport, and reasonably safe sleeping accommodations. It was uncertain going for one who had never set foot beyond the walls of a grand manor house populated by milky-eyed corpses drenched in perfumed oils to hide the smell of decay and puppeteered by the will of a madman. He left behind a life of miserable luxury, and the reality of freedom is cold nights and blistered feet and hunger pangs, but he knows that a gilded cage is still a cage, and he would sleep on cold stone floors and bleed through his ill-fitting boots for a hundred years more before he would return to the life he left behind.

When he reaches the end of his stock of stolen riches, he drops the last of his coins into the greedy palm of a sunburnt youth who tells him the comings and goings of the ships in Aglarond’s harbor, and points him towards a privateering vessel bound for Westgate in the morning.

He buys his way aboard the ship with a bottle of wine and the only skill he was taught that has any use beyond the high-echelon backbiting and peacocking of the archmages of Thay.

He hasn't told the captain his name, but then again, the captain has not asked. He's called him all manner of pet names, crude "compliments" babbled in the throes of pleasure, but never so much as bothered to ask his proper name–the one drawn in delicate script over the surface of the bottle sitting in his quarters, the one sealed with a painted succubus kiss.

A few weeks confined to the captain’s quarters tending to the man’s carnal desires is a paltry nothing compared to a century of miserable servitude, and it passes with a sort of hollow dullness. He spends much of the time lying on his back, staring numbly through a porthole at the endless sea and sky, the animal grunting and curses and tedious filth fading away under the sound of the crashing waves, the calls of the gulls wheeling by, and the siren song of a new life beyond the horizon.

"You could stay, pretty devil," the captain purrs over his shoulder. He draws his cloak more tightly around him, shuddering at the man's slimy tone, heavy with innuendo. "The ship's never had such luck on such a long voyage. I lost no men, we weathered no storms. You've been a blessing from the gods, my lovely."

He feels the captain crowding closer behind him, but he keeps his gaze resolutely on the docks, close enough now that the crew on the deck below are calling back and forth to one another, the vessel shudders and bobs beneath his bare feet as the anchors are dropped, as the sails are hauled in.

His lip curls as he feels the captain's breath against his cheek, hot and moist and making the golden trinkets in his ear sway and tinkle against one another. It smells of bitter liquor and salted fish. In his mind's eye, the man over his shoulder is dark-haired, elven, only just showing the signs of his seventh century in the creases on his dour face and grey at his temples, not a stocky human man marked by scars and weathered by years at sea.

His eyes do not leave the dock, closer now, the ship smoothly gliding to a stop. Just a bit closer, and the crew will lower the gangplank, and he will finally be free.

He thinks of his wings, left mounted over the grand fireplace in his master's study, a testament to his first and last flight, his first and last attempt to escape while his master still breathed. He wishes more than ever he could fly now, when freedom, true freedom, is so close he can taste it on the balmy saltwater breeze.

His wings are likely one of the few things that will have survived the fire that consumed what was his grand and gilded prison for nearly a hundred years.

"I never got your name," the captain croons in his ear like a lover. "I would have it painted on the hull of my ship, so she could always bear your gift. I would have a likeness of you carved as the figurehead, and have you warm my bed and bring my crew luck for the years to come."

Pretty words, prettier than the things the captain called him while he was beneath him, like they shared something romantic, rather than the truth of it–a transaction. It was simply the price he paid for a way to leave the ashes of his old life, could it even be called a life, behind.

The ship jolts and shudders to a final stop, he sways with the motion, and the captain sways too, but uses the momentum to slide a hand beneath the cambion's loose-fitting clothes to grope possessively at his chest.

It's instinct. His body reacts without thinking, fire blazing under his skin and bursting outwards. The captain cries out, stumbles away, and the flames dripping from the devil's skin follow like slavering hounds. He turns to face the flailing, screaming human and he can feel sparks dripping from his eyes, licking from between his bared teeth.

"You may call this ship a tomb when she sits at the bottom of the sea," he snarls as the wood begins to hiss and smoke and crack beneath his feet. "And you will never touch me again."

He does not wait to see the captain's fate. He traverses the ship's deck and crosses the gangplank, leaving a burning trail in his wake. It doesn’t take long for the crew to notice the rapidly spreading flames, and while a few of them try in vain to put them out or at least to slow the spread, others simply jump ship and swim to safety.

 He holds his head high as he turns his eyes to the sea, to the horizon where, far beyond the ship slowly being engulfed in hellish flame, sits a crumbling pile of ash and blackened stone, a funeral pyre for the man who held him prisoner, and for the girl he used to be.

my shadows of almia headcanon of the day: the chroma ruins are actually catacombs. with all the tunnels being, yknow, underground, and the existing manmade structures being 1) in place block off the primary entrance (i think, my memory is admittedly a little fuzzy) and 2) that one dais where the shadow crystal is supposed to be - the ruins were the traditional burial grounds of almia’s royal family (or just in general), the shadow crystal grew where the ancient king was entombed, and his remaining child in almia broke tradition by choosing to be interred in the hia vale/almia castle.

the older two siblings, who had been previously banished to the volcanic isle of boyle and the haruba coast, were similarly entombed away from the traditional resting grounds of their people, in the lands they spent the last parts of their lives in. all three’s resting places were found to possess 3 mysterious gems, similarly to the great crystal growing in the king’s tomb. (following the discovery of a dark stone formation growing out the king’s tomb, the catacombs were sealed from further use.)

the pokemon guarding the tears of princes were companions of the deceased princes, residing over their masters’ final resting place - the two legendaries are the same, but the lucario line (which doesn’t live as long) has passed down this duty through the generations. it is shrouded in mystery exactly when darkrai comes into play - was it a caretaker of the catacomb prior to the king’s entombment and crystalification? or was it attracted to the dark energy the crystal exuded? did it stay because it personally preferred the energy it radiated, or knew what power it possessed and was trying to act as guardian? questions abound. (read: i am still deciding my own fanlore.)

the spiritomb showed up after the catacombs stopped being maintained, though - it’s natural for them to form in places where many souls have gathered in a space that hasn’t been upkept spiritually. darkai was either indifferent/tolerant of it to some degree or was actively glad it was there, helping protect the tunnel system from outsiders. (if no special keystone is provided, time and exposure from gathered spirits will cause stones to become pseudo-keystones)

uhh the cresselia that was the pokemon companion of the yellow gem/prince is far more aware “the shadow’s” presence back on the mainland (as befitting their dual association - maybe the prince befriended it in relation to darkrai’s existence?) and is a far more difficult capture than heatran and lucario - she wants to ensure the last remaining vestige of her prince is in the hands of someone capable, or not at all. she’s mildly peeved at kellyn that he immediately trades it for keith.

yellow gem/the sun-touched prince = eldest sibling; red gem/the crimson prince = middle sibling; blue gem/the frost-wreathed prince = youngest sibling. the sun touched prince = a title given to the heir prince for his preference for yellow toned/gold accessories, it became to be used ironically when he was exiled to the haruba desert, where such extravagance was less practical, and sandstorms frequently blocked out the sun. the crimson prince = a title given for his preference for red-toned clothing and his violent (bloodthirsty) tendencies, it became ironic when he was exiled to a land of lava. the frost-wreathed prince = a title given for his preference of the cold mountains of hia, and how such cold never seemed to affect him like others. also while they’re all frequently called princes their gender identities are historically ambiguous. at least one of them is trans.

all three of them have fates mirroring what they wanted of a legacy: the sun touched prince is never reunited with his homeland, instead becoming a part of a different culture (and that in itself is something to unpack - historical colonialism and all that) and being primarily remembered not as a ruler but as something else (relating to hippowdon temple somehow); the crimson prince is never the great conqueror he hoped to be, is almost entirely unremembered, boyle isle being home only to a relatively small settlement that no longer sees industrial use (mines scraped hollow), has a small but thriving agricultural culture (got that fertile volcanic soil babey), and is an inexpensive holiday destination at best; the frost wreathed prince never wanted to be first heir to the throne, preferring to avoid politics and live simply but is remembered almost entirely as the last commonly noted ruler of almia.

A Stroke of Luck: A rare 2,500-year-old marble disc, designed to protect ancient ships and ward off the evil eye, was discovered by a lifeguard diving at sea and handed over to the Israel Antiquities Authority. >> 🧿

A marble disc, dating to the 5th–4th centuries BCE, was found during a dive by lifeguard David Shalom at the Yavne-Yam archaeological site near Palmachim Beach. Yaakov Sharvit, Director of the Marine Archaeology Unit at the Israel Antiquities Authority, explains: “From drawings on pottery, mosaics, and ancient coins, as well as from historical sources from the 5th century BCE, we learn that this design was common on ships’ bows and served to protect against the evil eye and envy, aided navigation, and acted as a pair of eyes looking ahead and warning of danger. This decoration is still common today on modern ships in Portugal, Malta, Greece, and the far east.”

The large white marble disc, 20 cm diameter, is flat on one side and curved on the other, and it has a central cavity with traces of paint appearing as two circles around the center. It is identified as an eye motif, in Greek “ophtalmoi,” and such discs adorned the bows of ancient warships and merchant vessels. Lead or bronze nails attached the center of the disc to the ship’s hull.

Although this artifact was once common and one would expect to find many similar artifacts, it is, in fact, rare. So far, only four similar ancient items have been discovered in the Mediterranean: two from the wreck of an ancient merchant ship found at the Tektaş Burnu site off the western coast of Turkey, between the islands of Samos and Kios, dating to 440–425 BCE, and two on the Mediterranean coast of Israel—one from the Carmel Beach and the other, just discovered, on the Yavneh-Yam coast.

“Yavne-Yam was settled for the first time in the Middle Bronze Age,” Sharvit says, “and was settled down to the Middle Ages. Near the ancient mound, there is a natural sheltered anchorage protected by a rock promontory.”

In water surveys conducted by the Marine Archaeology Unit of the Israel Antiquities Authority since the 1980s, finds from shipwrecked ships testifying to extensive commercial activity at the site were discovered. These include anchors of various sizes and weights with one to three holes, fishing equipment, lead weights, and stone anchors. Items used on ships were also found, including a lead cooking oven, grinding stones, stone bowls, fishing tools (bronze fishhooks, lead fishing nets, and lead depth measurement weights), as well as storage jars, amphorae, bowls, and cooking pots dating back to the Late Bronze Age, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods!

Sharvit explains: “Many of the pottery vessels were manufactured in the Levant or the eastern Mediterranean, but some were imported from distant Mediterranean countries.” The site revealed many Bronze Age finds, including dozens of gold items (earrings, beads, jewelry fragments, ingots, and jewelry industry waste), as well as a Syrian hematite seal. The finds were scattered in the area where 20 stone anchors, bronze arrowheads, tridents, and two figurines of the god Baal were discovered in the past. The archaeological finds indicate that the anchorage was in continuous use from the Late Bronze Age down to the medieval period.
