A list of some of my favorite theatre-related quotes:
"He's not the finest character that ever lived. But he's a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid." – Arthur Miller
"I know that my works are a credit to this nation and I dare say they will endure longer than the McCarran Act.” –Arthur Miller
"Don't be seduced into thinking that that which does not make a profit is without value.” – Arthur Miller
"Theater has an incredible capacity to move people to social change, to address issues, to inspire social revolution.” – Eve Ensler
"The word theatre comes from the Greeks. It means the seeing place. It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation." – Stella Adler
"I like the ephemeral thing about theatre, every performance is like a ghost - it's there and then it's gone." – Maggie Smith
"That's the magic of art and the magic of theatre: it has the power to transform an audience, an individual, or en masse, to transform them and give them an epiphanal experience that changes their life, opens their hearts and their minds and the way they think.” – Brian Stokes Mitchell
"I think theatre to some extent is always about telling stories, isn't it, and I think what I've learned is that freedom comes when you tell your story; freedom comes when you tell the truth.” – Eve Ensler
"We have the ability to change people's minds and hearts - that's what we want to do with theatre. That's what theatre does... period." – Gavin Creel
"I've always been a believer in the power of art - and music in particular - to inspire change." – Gavin Creel
"Unless the theatre can ennoble you, make you a better person, you should flee from it." Konstantin Stanislavski
"The greatest wisdom is to realize one's lack of it." – Konstantin Stanislavski
"Create your own method. Don't depend slavishly on mine. Make up something that will work for you! But keep breaking traditions, I beg you." – Konstantin Stanislavski
"I don't know what really makes a great musical or not. In the end, you write it, and you write it because you want to write it." – Andrew Lloyd Webber
"You're the luckiest person in the entire world if you know what you really want to do, which I was lucky enough to know when I was very young. And you're the luckiest person in the world if you can then make a living out of it." – Andrew Lloyd Webber
"Obviously, you would give your life for your children, or give them the last biscuit on the plate. But to me, the trick in life is to take that sense of generosity between kin, make it apply to the extended family and to your neighbour, your village and beyond." – Tom Stoppard
"Great theatre is about challenging how we think and encouraging us to fantasize about a world we aspire to." – Willem Dafoe
"I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being." – Thornton Wilder
"Once in awhile, there's stuff that makes me say, That's what theatre's about. It has to be a human event on the stage, and that doesn't happen very often." – Uta Hagen
"The theatre is a spiritual and social X-ray of its time." – Stella Adler
"Theatre was my first love. I can't take the theatre out of me. And I wouldn't want to. To me, it's home." – Jim Parsons
"The way the world is, I think a silly evening in the theatre is a good thing, to take our minds off terror." – Tim Curry
"The theatre is the involuntary reflex of the ideas of the crowd." – Sarah Bernhardt
"Mum wasn't at all religious, but she thought that going to the theatre was as important a ceremonial, communal experience that a person could have." – Hayley Atwell
"In the end I think theatre has only one subject: justice." – Edward Bond
"I feel there's a power in theatre, but it's an indirect power. It's like the relationship of the sleeper to the unconscious. You discover things you can't afford to countenance in waking life. You can forget them, remember them a day later or not have any idea what they are about." – Tony Kushner
"The way you give love is the most profoundly human part of you. When people say it's ugly or a perversion or an abomination, they're attacking the center of your being." – Tony Kushner
"The more you go to a theatre and the more you hear stories you aren't necessarily familiar with, the more open you become." – Lynn Nottage
"I think folks who are resistant to engaging in art become less so once they encounter art that really reflects them." – Lynn Nottage
"And whether or not you're interested in opera or classical music or folk music or the theatre, I think that for a nation's health and well-being it's very important that the arts scene is supported." – Lesley Sharp
"It's communication - that's what theatre is all about." – Chita Rivera
"It's one of the tragic ironies of the theatre that only one man in it can count on steady work - the night watchman." – Tallulah Bankhead
"I've learnt that there's acting for film, acting for theatre, and acting for an audition." – Sarah Snook
"Theatre is expensive to go to. I certainly felt when I was growing up that theatre wasn't for us. Theatre still has that stigma to it. A lot of people feel intimidated and underrepresented in theatre.” – Christopher Eccleston
"Theatre has had a very important role in changing South Africa. There was a time when all other channels of expression were closed that we were able to break the conspiracy of silence, to educate people inside South Africa and the outside world. We became the illegal newspaper." – John Kani
"Films I've really liked are when you've walked out and you're still in that movie for a while. That's virtual reality for me, to go into a theatre, especially with the use of sound - a subconscious thing that's underestimated." – Lynne Ramsay
"It's great to be in a film that's able to have people really want to become socially conscious, to walk out of the theatre and want to do something." – Don Cheadle
"One of my beliefs is that there are certain institutions within a community which stand for the spirit and heart of that community, there's the church, the local football team, the local pub and the theatre." – David Soul
"I think the same way about theatre, you go out there and you are creating a world for a moment that can actually have a real impact on people, present some kind of story that gives you something to think about when you walk away, feeling enriched - if it works out well." — Jeffrey Jones
"What theatre started to look at much earlier than any other form was the internal operations of ordinary people, sometimes using mythic models in order to tell the story." – Pete Townshend
"I don't think it's the job of filmmakers to give anybody answers. I do think, though, that a good film makes you ask questions of yourself as you leave the theatre." – Paul Haggis
"Miller didn't write Death of a Salesman. He released it. It was there inside him, waiting to be turned loose. That's the measure of its merit." – Elia Kazan
"I always go back to theatre. It's probably where I'll draw my last breath." – Peter Gallagher

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐇𝐔𝐑𝐓 Plot: Rafe finds a massive secret that Calliope is hiding from him and the rest of the pogues. What is it? characters; rafe cameron, the pogues, the dutton family warnings: mentions of cancer diagnosis, fluff, swearing, family fighting pairing: rafe cameron x calliope dutton word count : tbd
a/n: please do not steal any of my work as i spend long hours creating what i write :) my gif below <3
Tumblr media
𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐓 know how to tell her family, friends, and boyfriend Rafe. How was she supposed to do this? Calliope had just found out that she had cancer, and she would more than likely not survive it. Less then twenty-four hours ago Calliope Dutton found out that she had stage three leukemia- it was the family flaw. It had skipped all of her siblings, so of course she was going to be the one to end up with the disease. But how the hell was she meant to tell all the people she cared about? Especially, Rafe, he had just lost his own father months beforehand and she did not want to set the male off on a serious violent rampage just like he had many times before.
.
She held the paperwork in her hands as she stood on the porch of the Cameron family home, she knew Rafe would be here. He never really left the house much these days. It had been about two days since the last time she had seen her boyfriend, she felt bad about not being in touch with him but she did need time to process what on earth was happening to her. With a swift knock on the wooden door, she could hear it echo through the empty Cameron home. "Give me a minute!" She heard Rafe's voice from the other side of the door, a nervous breath left her lips as she waited. A smile appeared on Rafe's face as he opened the door- oh how he had missed his girl. "Calliope, my love." He reached out for her, not noticing the paperwork that she had in her hands. Rafe's arms wrapped around her body, and he pulled her as close to his body as he humanly could. "Can't breathe- R-Rafe." She struggled to talk as he continued to hug her. "Shit, sorry." He moved away from her, still keeping a hand on her waist as they stood there in the doorway. "Can we talk?" She looks up at him, her brown eyes trying to let his own blue ones know that something is wrong- without even having to say anything to him. "Yeah, yeah of course." He grabs her hand and leads the two upstairs to his childhood room.
.
The two young adults were sitting on Rafe's bed, Rafe's body was leaning up on the headboard of the bed, while she sat in front of him. She sighed and handed her boyfriend the paperwork that she had in her hands. Rafe gave her a weird look, he hadn't seen her in two days and now she is handing him a bunch of papers- what the hell was happening?
"What's this?" He smiled lightly as he took them from her hand. "Please, just read it." She urged him to read what was in his hands, "But hey, look at me." Tears were now welling up in the corners of her eyes. "No matter what happens, please just know I love you." "Okay?" He answers, he looks down at the words on the page, the bright and beautiful smile slowly dimming down to a blank expression. Calliope placed one of her hands over her mouth to keep the weeping sounds from coming for her lips- how the hell was she not supposed to cry? The love of her life was reading that she only had twelve-eighteen months left to live.
"When did you find out?" It was the only thing he was able to choke out, his words came with sobs as he sat there. "I found out two days ago..." Calliope didn't want to look at Rafe, she felt ashamed for keeping from keeping this news from him for as long as she did. "Holy shit." He choked out. "Holy, shit." He looked right at her, the whites of his eyes were turning red from the tears that were making their way onto his tanned skin. "I am so sorry, so sorry for keeping it from you-" "No." Rafe moved closer to his girlfriend, he cupped her cheeks with his hands. "Don't you dare say sorry for this, this is not your fault. Do you hear me? This is not your fault." Their foreheads rested against each other. "The cancer, the uh leukemia." She wipes the tears from her eyes. "It runs in my family, but none of my siblings got it, of course, it's me who got it. Of fucking course it was me." This was the first time she had properly cried about it. It had only just sunk in- that she was dying that there was nothing that she could do about it.
"Hey, look at me." She listens. "We are going to do whatever we can to make sure that you're looked after, whatever you want I am here, whatever you need I will get for you." His eyes looked genuine. Of course, it was. He just found out his girlfriend was dying. "Marry me." Her words were soft. "What?" Rafe chuckles "Marry. Me." She was sat up straight now, looking at her boyfriend. "I am serious Rafe, you're the only one I have ever wanted, and if there was one person I wanted with me as I slowly drifted into the madness that all of these medications and chemo they're going to put me through- I would want you. No, I need you there with me." There was a big child-like grin on Rafe's face. It was the only he had ever wanted her to say to him- even though he wished it was in different circumstances. "I mean if you really want-" Calliope cuts Rafe off from talking by leaning forward to his face and planting a kiss upon his chapped lips. "Rafe Cameron. You're the only person who I have ever wanted in my life. Why can't you believe that?" He could not believe the words that were coming from her mouth, but he had the perfect idea- to make this moment even more special for the both of them. He moved back from her, leaning to get access to the bedside table, and pulled out a box. It was a small black velvet jewelry box that he had had in his drawer for almost an entire year.
"It was my mums- I want you to have it." The ring was gorgeous. Never in her life had she ever seen something so beautiful. "Rafe... I don't need this." She tried to push the ring away from her, but he insisted but just simply placing the ring on her ring finger. "No, she would have loved you, Callie. Almost as much as I do. You're it for me."
Somehow it was a perfect fit, she adored the ring. "Well, we should get to the court house yeah?" He suggested.
.
𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐖 calliope's time to tell the pogues, she was born a pogue. She grew up having sleepovers at John B's home with JJ and Pope. They were her second family. They never abandoned her when she told them all that she was with Rafe, they all knew how Calliope felt about Rafe- she had been in love with the eldest Cameron for as long as she could remember. Calliope pulled her phone from her pocket a texted John B, making sure that everyone was where she thought they were.
Tumblr media
When she got the confirmation from John B., she got into her car and drove the fifteen-minute journey to the old Maybank property. She had no idea how the six would take the news- the three boys were bound to shut off. The three girls on the other hand would have their own words. Calliope never understood what it meant to share news like this with the people you care for to tell your family that you would be leaving them before you turn twenty-one. The brunette had to stop herself from bawling her eyes out on he drive over- she didn't want to leave, she was terrified of dying.
.
She could hear the laughter of all six of the pogues, it seemed that she got there just after JJ had. Calliope just stood there for a moment, taking in the moment. JJ and Kie had finally coupled up, John B and Sarah were as happy as could ever be and Pope had finally found love with someone who he adored more than anything. She was going to miss it all.
"John B!" Calliope called out as she ran down the extended dock to where the six teenagers were. Smiles and bright eyes all looked at Calliope. Although she was dating- no, engaged to Rafe Cameron they were somewhat accepting of it. Rafe had done bad things but they all knew how much Rafe cared for Calliope- and that he would not hurt her.
"Callie is here!" Kiara called out to her dear friend, the curly brunette girl wrapping both of her arms around Calliope's body- Calliope returned with the same strength, even though it hurt her body to do so. "Where have you been?" Kiara questions, pulling away from her friend.
"Uh, I had to go to Charleston." She answers, fiddling with the new ring on her ring finger. "What for?" John B asks this time. Calliope sighed, placing strands of fallen hair behind her ears. The tears begging to make their own little salty pools in the corner of her eyes. All of the pogues shared looks with one another. They were now scared. "Umm uh so." She clapped her hands together. "I had to go and see a specialist." She announced. "A few weeks before we went to South America I had a few blood tests done, and some scans-" "Was what when Kai took you?" Kiara interrupts. Calliope just nods her head. "I got the results back yesterday. Turns out I have stage three leukemia. I have about eighteen months left to live." Surprisingly JJ was the first to make a move. He moved from where he was next to Kiara and wrapped his arms around Calliope's frame. Calliope and JJ do have a past- they had slept together a few times after Big John went missing, there were some confessions made but nothing serious ever became of them. He just became her best-friend.
"Oh, Calliope." Sarah made her way over to where JJ and Calliope were. Sarah also wrapped her arms around the two teenagers. The rest of the pogues joined in too. "Well then." John B began after everyone had removed themselves from the hug. "We are going to make this the best summer ever. And Calliope." John B looked at his friend, he took her hand. "Whatever you need, we are all here for you okay?" "Okay." She nodded her head, John B's eye caught the sparkle of her left hand in the sun, he had finally seen the ring. "Oh, my god! Calliope!" John B holds up her hand and shows everyone the ring. "What is that?" Cleo asks. "What do you think!?" Sarah exclaimed with excitement. "Calliope and I are gonna be sisters!" The excitement was cut short when Sarah realised that there was reason why that ring was on her finger now- Rafe wanted to marry her before she passed away.
"Don't worry guy's I will be okay, I have you all."
