I saw this in one of your posts “Like. let's traumatise the made-up kids, it's good for the real kids to read as long as you talk about it the right ways. (I'm being blithe and simplistic here but if you want a ramble on what I mean just ask)” and I was intrigued. Maybe you’ve already done a post about this so I apologise if so but this is me asking for that ramble

Oh damn I had to dig for that post, but yeah! So a couple background info things:

One, I was the kind of autistic kid who has the empathy where you cry when others cry or get angry when others are angry, but who also can't understand why people are reacting in ways I wouldnt react/what the emotions im mirroring are. I learned most of what I know about the vast complexities of humanity through stories, because that was my window into mindsets that are not my own, and it's especially good for the people around me that I was such a voracious reader because it gave me a huge variety of "people" to view the internal worlds of, whereas if I read a more limited selection I'd probably have a lot less compassion just because I had fewer models to learn from. So I feel very strongly about the ability of story to teach us how people work, because I experienced it firsthand in a very conscious way. (More on this later)

The other thing is I write a lot of original work, most of which is aimed at the kind of middle grade/young adult age range. Nothing published yet, but I've been thinking about what it means to tell a story to children vs teens vs adults for over half my life now, especially since starting to work as a dance teacher and spending my adult life mostly around kids of various ages. So again, strong feelings about how adults have to teach kids not just what to do but why it matters - kids aren't learning facts alone in school or life, they are learning how to be people. Everything is a lesson, especially when you're particularly young

So the post was talking in that paragraph about how so many books for kids portray the necessity of the child hero, when adults reading will usually go "what the FUCK that kid is TWELVE they're a baby". And that's a good impulse! It's important for adults to want to keep kids from having to take on too much responsibility too early!

But I think when adults have that handwringing moment they forget that kids in real life have absurd and awful responsibilities and experiences every day whether we like it or not. So often I see people talk about that kind of child chosen one story as being some kind of awful bc it teaches kids not to rely on adults and frankly, many of us learned that from real life! I did, even with the wonderful parents that I had, because my school experiences were that fucking awful. We have to tell stories about kids facing down awful, traumatic experiences, both fantastical and realistic, and we have to tell stories about the nasty bits that come after, the grief and trauma and feeling scraped raw and the bad coping mechanisms as well as the good ones and the days you slide back into the person you were when you thought you were past it - because real kids need to know they're not alone and they're not weak or bad or any of a number of things that feeling isolated in your trauma can lead you to believe, especially as a child when everything is so much bigger because its happening for the first time

The story I have lived with the longest, trying to write it for twelve/thirteen year olds since I was twelve myself, is one about a kid with the same trauma I had of being undiagnosed but visibly autistic in ways that her peers hated and a kid with an abusive parent being forced to do really awful things to try and earn that parent's approval. It's also a fantasy story wish fulfillment type thing for baby me with ghosts and junior high theatre classes and magic! And even just letting that story and characters grow and change with me has helped me to heal from a lot of things that really fucked me over in my childhood and adolescence. Not perfectly! I'm in therapy for a goddamn reason! But it gave me hope to tell a story about these people who faced down violence they never should have had to and not only lived, but came out the other end slowly learning to thrive and leave that violence in the past. Kids who've faced trauma, whether like mine or like that character of mine with the abusive parent or like any number of other horrible things that can happen to kids, they deserve to see that they can have power and agency, that they can face awful things and win, and that they can heal and be happy. Not every book for kids does this the ways I personally like but that's why I feel so strongly about children's media having that "kids have to save the day" trope no matter how pearl-clutchy adults get about it, and that's why i dont shy away from putting kids in my stories in dangerous positions. It's not about the characters, bc they're symbols. It's about what I can give as a storyteller to the kids reading, or even the kids inside the adults reading. We all have a little kid in our heads who needs to know it's going to be ok, I think.

I love the college of winterhold. everyone there is casually deranged and there's like an alarming number of students and staff who threaten you immediately when they meet you. it's always one of the first questlines I do. which makes it even funnier when you get made the arch-mage of the college. Which Deadly Sin would you associate with each of them? It doesn't need to be considering the basic interpretation of sin, of course.

hmmm. This is... actually surprisingly difficult to answer! None of them really match up perfectly, so its pretty vague associations sometimes. Using our versions of the Sins for this:

Jean: envy, probably. Considering how much they compare themselves to others! Gotta be better than everyone else or they're failing.

Maria: pride or envy would probably work here too, but... greed. Less in the physical material sense (though she does tend to rely on material objects for the sake of her image) and more in the metaphorical; she needs people's attention, their positive opinions, she fears being left alone or being hated.

Kaylen: gluttony - again, like Maria, it's more in the metaphorical sense; the constant need for Experiences. He resonates less with any of the sins than the others ngl - greed would also work here honestly. But he constantly has to be doing something, not necessarily for personal gain but just for the sake of not being bored.

Danny: wrath~ he's not especially violent naturally, but he does respond pretty aggressively to perceived slights - especially if they're against someone he cares about.

Sel: Pride. Considering their level of violence you'd think wrath, but with their focus on how others perceive them and needing to be "perfect"... yeahh. A lot of their actions, at least originally, were more for the sake of appearances than anything else. (Also, like. They are pretty arrogant lol)

Basil: originally said wrath, but... lust, I think. The desire to be seen as who he is in and of himself instead of as part of his family or what he represents.

Liv: sloth - whilst she isn't especially nihilistic, if put in a difficult situation she would rather not act at all and just let it happen so that she herself doesn't cause any harm.

After he got crowned, Danny started to clean up in the Ghost Zone. One thing he found was an empty lair. An elegant room full of books with a fireplace and comfy armchairs. A ghost was tied to this place, but he never saw them. But he still could feel that the lair was tied to someone, what meant that the ghost didn't end to exist.

It took some time, but Danny was able to follow the bond from the lair to the ghost. He found himself back in the mortal realm and his first thought was that the ghost got somehow stuck here.

So the plan was to find him and bring him back to the zone. Except as soon as Danny made the plan, he should have known that nothing ever goes according to plan for him.

The bond lead him to a young man with black hair that had a white stripe in it. And the man was very much alive, but also didn't seem to be possessed. But he also absolutely felt like the lair.

Invisible Danny followed the guy around and he found out quite a few things.

His name was Jason Peter Todd.

He lives in Gotham.

He is the vigilante/crime lord Red Hood.

He came back from the dead as a revenant.

He got dipped into some corrupted ectoplasm.

He had sever anger issues because of that.

So... Danny made another plan. Jazz had told him about emotional support dogs, because she liked to work with them. And Danny was pretty sure that it shouldn't be to hard to train a ghost dog to do all of this.

It was a nightmare to train Cujo, but after almost six month he was positive that it would work. He took Cujo with him to Gotham and waited till he had a moment where he got Red Hood alone.

The first thing that happened after he made himself visible but not tangible, was that Hood shot him. Like, rude. But because of that he was here.

So...

I've been doing some thinking about a couple of things.

This blog has grown considerably, even from its start and I appreciate each and every one of you so much. Your support never ceases to amaze me and I owe all of you a lot for giving me something to focus on this year instead of spiraling into insanity.

But

Things have gotten a tad bit overwhelming recently between trying to run the blog and trying to write. I find myself either having to ignore the blog to get writing done, or sacrifice writing time and energy to spend time on the blog and keep up with all the replies/reblogs/asks etc. Definitely not complaining, you all never cease to amaze me.

But, I am just one person and my brain only has so much power right now. So, I'm planning to take some (more) time off each week right now while I focus on writing and planning since we're getting into some serious plot stuff soon. So I'm planning to be on the blog three days a week for a while: Saturday, Sunday, and Thursday. That gives me some time to get some writing done as well as some time to rest my brain.

Saturday and Sunday of course to post the chapter and respond to replies and reblogs so I don't get super behind. Monday I'll have some asks queued up as well as maybe a few reblogs. I'll still use the queue Tuesday and Wednesday for reblogs/asks with spoilers as usual. Thursday I'll be on the blog answering asks from Monday - Wednesday as well as things I get that day. I'll queue up a few things for Friday since that day gives me a little break between to prepare for the weekend and posting the chapter.

I'll probably add more days as time goes on. You can still send in asks on the days I'm gone, but just know I won't see them or respond to them until later in the week. I already get behind by a couple days on asks anyway so that's not much of a change.

Don't feel bad for sending them either, I love getting all these asks, I just tend to get behind on days I spend more time writing.

The second order of business

has to do with my taglist. Most of you probably haven't noticed (which I don't blame you lol) but my taglist has gotten very big. Very, very big. It's just over 230 people right now, and I'm sure there will be others asking to join. It's quite time consuming to do all of these tags for every chapter (especially since we can't tag in blocks anymore) so I've been doing some thinking into how I can make it easier for me, and for you.

I know there's at least one blog I've heard of, though I'm sure there's more, that have made side blogs that they have people follow and turn on notifications for and just make a post on that blog when they post a chapter or fic, etc. I've been considering doing that since the taglist is a lot of work and time.

I've also seen blogs that have side blogs that just post chapters/fics and nothing else. I know quite a few of you only follow for the fic, so if anyone is interested, I could put together a side blog like that as well that you can follow and get notifications from instead of having to follow this blog and having to go through the probably 100 posts that I make a day 😂 (at least it feels that way for me)

Having a separate blog for the taglist too would allow me to schedule posts so I can have them come out a bit earlier than I get up for those of you across the world who stay up to read and have to wait for me to post in the morning when I get up (or later like today because I slept in). Of course Ao3 will get posted later because I can't schedule posts there, but at least for Tumblr I can have things post earlier.

So let me know what you think about the taglist side blog and the possible just chapters/fics side blog. Feel free to send in asks (anonymously or not) with your opinion. I might not answer them all (not tonight because my brain is fried and honestly i'm not sure if this is even comprehensible English) but I will at least use them to make the decision (or make a post with all of them and answer it as just one).

Do u think u could make an opera version of mayor? I've seen a few artists make diff opera wukong/Mac designs but I think a opera mayor design would look very cool :D

Not gonna lie, I was nervous to do this, but, I don't regret trying out this challenge.

RAMBLES + (literally only two) REFERANCES BELOW THE CUT:

The costume is based on the classic armor outfit in Chinese Peking Opera. Since, we all know that the Mayor doesn't actually have that many identifiable characteristics or, much of a role in the LMK show other than being LBD's foot soldier or, thrall. So, I had to reflect that in what's probably an incredibly basic interpretation for what their design could be (because if you actually see the insane level amount of detail in peking opera outfits, you'll understand that this drawing is heavily simplified and lacks detail).

The mask, is, also simple. I tried to look at numerous references and get my head around the insane amount of possibilities of patterns and designs and what they mean, as well as what the colours symbolize, but all that's important is that blue symbolizes stoicism, black for integrity, and white symbolizes evil (but of course these meanings for colours have leeway in between depending on what source you look at. There is no definitive answer).

The mask is also important because it creates the most visual distinction from Mayor being a Jing instead of a Sheng (male protagonist). And, even though it's a basic mask, I did create it to imply an almost 'skull' shape to it. But it's discrete and, you have to be looking for it to be there (which I suppose fits because, Mayor being LBD's thrall wasn't revealed straight away)

Now okay look, I'm- I'm not an expert on peking opera at all, I had to do a bit or research to do this in order to actually understand what I am doing when it comes to designing an outfit for Mayor. You might see a hint of his Chief costume in the chest plate I decided to keep, and all those skull motifs to show that he is a thrall of Lady Bone Demon. But in short, he is a warrior, a soldier, a chief of war, and he fights and works for Lady Bone Demon. He is to be a character with heavy, dramatic armor, and a mask to not only symbolize his role in whatever theatre show he lands himself in, but also for the shrouded identity he has and, well, not exactly being the most in-depth or open character in the show :))).

Anyways, here's a beta design back when I legitimately had no idea what I was doing and had done like zero research apart from looking at references I lied and, thinking Mayor would have a 'lighter (less heavy) and less decorative outfit (clearly I changed my mind later on):

I am, glad I did not follow through with this design. This is, not a peking opera outfit. Not a conventional one at least, that would reflect who the Mayor is (because this mf is conventional as hell, fitting in with modern times with his suit and all).

Design is welcome for critique (again, I am not an expert on peking opera (it's such a vast, complex, and wonderful artform that the more I found out the more I was intimidated by) and possibly subjected to be redesigned later on should I look back on this months-years later and cringe horrifically.

I've seen the last '"g-d made you perfect" that I can handle, and it's led me to a realization about how I think of g-d.

I don't think we were made perfect. We were made human. And, if I'm honest, the only perfection in my mind is g-d, and that sense of perfection is what differentiates humans from g-d. If humans were as perfectly-made as g-d, I for one wouldn't see the point in following, believing, trusting, caring for, or loving g-d.

I guess for me, I see the ways in which humans alter the Way We Were Created that I really don't think it's right to speculate as to if there's a limit to altering our abilities or bodies. For instance, as a trans person, I've definitely been inundated with this idea that because g-d made my body "perfect" that I shouldn't alter it ever, but isn't that a dangerous precedent? Is it really so, that our bodies are magically made perfect, as g-d that to even tamper with the idea of change would be the same as cursing g-d? I really don't think that's compelling.

I love thinking about just how much g-d is placed into people, but I don't think it warrants restricting the ability to learn, create, grow, or change. Thank g-d that He created the ability to change!

what do you think about zora design? about past and current designs? how would you change it? actually!!! what are the zora (and other races) like in your sword of fate au???

got distracted by the second question. look at my little guys:

these are some of the current (working) designs!! from left to right it's sheikah, zora, hylian, goron, and gerudo! these aren't necessarily the average builds/designs for each race but they're the most important character from each race lol. sword of fate takes place really early-on in the timeline, so the culture and separation of races is still kind of loose especially among the humanoid races. the current generation of zora is basically the first generation to call themselves zora and attempt to establish a government or hold any authority alongside the other races of hyrule, and because they're kind of a young race i imagine they're less fishy and more invertebrate-like in this stage, hence my jellyfish princess! (her dad is a giant squid lol.) the sheikah are descendants of the original surface humans, whereas the hylians and gerudo are two seperate sects that both originally came from skyloft. the hylians built a few villages which each have their own distinct vibe while the gerudo took a more nomadic approach and roam the desert in small independently governed groups. The gorons are the most well-established race at this point, having been on the surface a lot longer than basically everyone else, and so they have a much stronger culture and shared identity than a lot of the other races that are still kind of getting their footing.
