As I went back and looked at our deep cultural archive, I was reminded of the all black social clubs that manifested themselves in 20th century New York City and in Dallas, Texas.
Following the years after reconstruction, many black people still were turned away from high society social clubs, so they created their own.
“The Idle Wild Social Club” formed in Dallas, Texas in 1918 by a group of socially well placed black men in response to the all white “White Idle Club”. This club often had debutante balls for women as well.
The Harlem Renaissance in Harlem, New York catapulted many black visionaries into stardom and cultivated many talented artists. In 1927 Eunice Shreeves invited her friends to her home to fellowship before leaving for college. “Girl Friends Inc.” was a sanctuary for young black women to gain wisdom and socialize with other like minded black women.
These Socials Clubs often get overlooked in our history, but they serve as one of the most important building blocks in the community, as they provided a space where many felt safe and supported while living life through Jim Crow.

Al "artwork" is already beginning to crowd out images on Pinterest. The most annoying part is that selecting the images to determine whether they are Al-generated seems to register with Pinterest as "liking" them, and it constantly tries to feed you more and more of them. You are forced to actively select them to hide them- and when it asks you why, it doesn't even let you say "because I do not want an Al-generated image".
The above is a comment from the A.I. Is A Grift video.
Pinterest was launched in January 2010.
The visionary project is the product of Ben Silbermann (CEO), Evan Sharp (chief design and creative officer), and Paul Sciarra (entrepreneur).
Pinterest started from the idea of having an internet collection board where people could gather and share visual representations of their goals and plans.
Today, Pinterest has 478 million monthly active users, and its goal is to inspire people to create.
Monitor everything that is being said about your business on all web and social media channels
Learn More about BrandMentions
In addition to being one of the most used social media platforms to date, Pinterest is also used for personal and company marketing. For example, the promoted pin feature is a great strategy to redirect users to business external links.
Pinterest Ownership
Pinterest’s social networking potential and visual search power sky-rocketed CEO Ben Silbermann into the world of billionaire entrepreneurs.
Silbermann has been portrayed by “The Guardian” as the modest genius who lives in San Francisco and works in Silicon Valley and also happens to be a billionaire.
When Facebook announced its plans to acquire Instagram, people have speculated that Mark Zuckerberg would want to buy Pinterest too.
Instead, Facebook Inc. did not offer to buy Pinterest, Microsoft did.
Despite the $51 billion offer, Ben Silbermann still owns Pinterest (50.83M shares) and has declared no intention of selling it any time soon.
No matter the domain or type of business, Pinterest continues to be a strong way of creating brand awareness through photo and video sharing."
The visual discovery tool is one of the best and biggest visual internet collections out there
Why won't Pinterest allow users to reject A.I. if they so choose?

David Webb: A Self Taught Jeweller
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1925, David Webb was a self-taught jewelry designer. His works mostly included dragon bracelets, Maltese cross brooches and animal motifs. David webb Jewelery and his artworks were loved by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor, and his work is still instantly recognisable today. Today David Webb jewelry auction is held on big auction sites.
The suffering picture of David Webb is inherently attached to his rising to notoriety in the midst of the allure of mid-1960's America, obviously, the story began a whole lot sooner than that. David Webb was brought into the world in 1925 in Asheville, North Carolina, and got his beginning as a student in a silversmith's shop having a place with his uncle, prior to moving to New York where he worked fixing gems in Greenwich Village. David Webb jewelry for sale is available online on the auction platforms like Bidsquare.
It was not some time before Webb's regular appeal and ability carried him to the consideration of New York's social first class and, with the support of the well off supporter Antoinette Quilleret, he was at last ready to open his own shop in 1945. His juvenile business immediately met with sufficient achievement that he had the option to purchase out Quilleret right away subsequently, setting up David Webb Inc. in 1948. Webb's self-trained style overflowed with thoughts gathered from years spent poring over old gems from Greece, Mesopotamia, and Central and South America, just as conventional adornments styles from China and India. Obviously, plan drifts nearer to home additionally had their part to play in his turn of events. The direction of American and European adornments over his early stages can be extensively portrayed as a swing away from the theoretical math of Art Deco towards more overflowing, non-literal subjects from the regular world. This development was supported by such industry titans as Cartier, where the persuasive association of innovative chief Jeanne Toussaint and architect Peter Lemarchand brought about all way of creature themes, finishing in Cartier's acclaimed 'Huge Cat' gems of the last part of the 1940s onwards. The impact was certain - in the most natural sounding way for Webb, 'everything was brought into the world from the impact of Toussaint, normally, she propelled we all'. David Webb Auction today is a result of his talent.
Webb's gems were normal profound replacements to both Cartier's metaphorical gems and their previous Indian-impacted 'Tutti Frutti' style of the mid-1920s, yet it was Webb's own visionary twist on these themes that impelled his firm to progress. His plans established a connection with probably the most persuasive adornments gatherers of the period, maybe most conspicuously Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1929-1994). His status as the pre-prominent American gem dealer was cleverly perceived by the First Lady, who charged him to make a progression of paperweights including an assortment of American minerals to be introduced to visiting heads of state. Ruler Hassan of Morocco, for instance, was given a gold figure of an American Eagle inset with an American topaz on a state visit in March 1963.
Another piece, that stayed in the assortment of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and was sold in 1996 especially epitomizes the glow of Webb's relationship with his marvelous benefactor. It's anything but a Cellini-Esque coral paperweight. The buff-hued coral was of nostalgic importance – it had been initially introduced to President Kennedy as a blessing, as it started from Kasolo Island in the Solomon Islands, where he had been wrecked in 1943. Webb was endowed by Jacqueline Kennedy, to improve her late spouse's coral in 1966, utilizing it to frame the fishtail of regularly creative legendary ocean lion, cast in gold, which he settled upon a bigger part of coral among a bed of brilliant precious stones to shape the paperweight.
Webb's creature themed gems were a specific top choice among an abundance of well known customers, for instance, the Duke of Windsor, who purchased a plated frog bangle as an unexpected present for his significant other in March 1964. The piece was without a doubt generally welcomed, as Webb is said to have followed up the buy with a coordinating with pair of ear cuts, which he gave as a blessing straightforwardly to the Duchess herself.
He additionally tracked down a continuing in Hollywood: his delusion bangles, themselves an enthusiastic reexamination of comparative customary Indian gems plans and later forms via Cartier, joined the zoo of Elizabeth Taylor, and some of his other striking plans likewise discovered their direction into the assortments of stars like Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, and Merle Oberon. A definitive underwriting came from the incomparable authority of ground breaking design of the period – the whimsical manager of Harper's Bazaar Diana Vreeland, who prized a significantly striped polish bangle displayed as a zebra, Webb's own embraced image.
This wonderful vocation was grievously stopped – David Webb kicked the bucket of pancreatic disease in 1975, at the time of only 50. Regardless of this overwhelming misfortune, the organization has kept, creating gems amazingly with regards to the soul, creative mind, and quality that characterized Webb's suffering style, still from the workshop over his leader store neglecting the clamor of New York's Madison Avenue.

Allen Onyia and Ouigi Theodore Are Black Icons of Style With a Message
BYSKYY SANDIFER May 17, 2021
https://www.complex.com/style/allen-onyia-ouigi-theodore-icons-of-style
Tumblr media
Last summer’s mass movement against police violence and racist inequality in the United States may have been the start of something. Now, industries across America are beginning to take stands to counter the injustices people of color face in this country every day. Though there is more work to be done, powerful actors are starting to make changes, responding to the citizenry’s demands for equality and representation for all, no matter their skin color or economic status.
Unfortunately, like other industries in America, fashion has a long history of excluding Black creators. But Macy’s is aiming to change that with its Icons of Style collections, dropping five collaborative capsules made in concert with some of the country’s leading Black creative minds. For Icons of Style, the retailer has teamed with Black visionaries to create fashion reflecting the diversity of its customer base.
Earlier this year, we told you about Macy’s first Icons of Style drop, which featured collections from Zerina Akers, Misa Hylton, Aminah Abdul Jillil, Allen Onyia, and Ouigi Theodore. Now, Macy’s is back with its second set of Icons of Style releases, including a hotly-anticipated Allen Onyia for INC capsule and a covetable Ouigi Theodore collection for Sun + Stone.
Ahead of the release of those capsules, Complex spoke with Onyia and Theodore to hear their thoughts on being Black creators in the United States, authentic representation, access to the fashion industry, and how they feel about their innovative partnerships with Macy’s.
Read on, then be sure to watch the videos below where the creators have personal chats with Durand Guion, the Vice President of Macy’s Fashion Office. After that, stay tuned for Onyia and Theodore’s Macy’s collections dropping May 28.

For Allen Onyia, this Macy’s collaboration is a dream come true. With fond childhood memories of the retailer, the founder of UpscaleHype says he’s honored to contribute his designs to a brand working to perpetuate positivity and inclusion in fashion. For his Macy’s INC collection, he took casual, ready-to-wear pieces and turned them into conversation starters. Before that capsule drops later this month, see what Onyia told us about his personal style and what his Macy’s INC collection represents.
Onyia on What His Collection Represents:
My collection pays homage to Macy’s and what they’re most recognized for: the end of year Thanksgiving holiday parade, the tradition, and everything surrounding that. For me, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade gave me a feeling of triumph, unity, and togetherness. This collection was designed at the end of 2020, and that’s where my mind was. I want people to feel that we made it through all the stages of the parade, so it’s a celebration.

Onyia on His Personal Sense of Style:
My friend recently described my style as “attainable high fashion.” This collection reflects that, with the belted trouser and the etching details. It’s attainable not only in the price, but also the styles. My style is effortless, clean, sharp and edgy. And I think it’s reflected in this collection.
Onyia on the Black Representation in Fashion:
No one can communicate better to us than us. No one can understand our plight better than us, so let us tell our story through many channels. And for me, this is just one of those channels.

As the Creative Director of the New York-based Brooklyn Circus clothing brand, Ouigi Theodore’s work is in high demand. Born in Port-au-Prince and raised in both Haiti and The United States, the esteemed designer has developed a sense of duality that informs both his personal life and how he creates his work. Theodore says his Macy’s collab is a tug-of-war between love and hate, where love ultimately wins. The line boasts both classic and contemporary elements, offering customers a mix of past, present, and future in a wearable package. Like Theodore himself, the collection is a nuanced and intentional fusion that pays homage to the timelessness Macy’s represents. With those ideas in mind, Theodore recently took a few moments to chat with Complex about his craft, his inspiration, and Black culture within fashion.
Theodore on Staying True to Inspiration:
The collection is special because it is true to my design approach, which includes lots of hidden references and details. I stayed true to my love of classic items and my approach to making things contemporary and future proof. And it’s dedicated to my mother who was born in 1945 and to soldiers coming home from the war.
Theodore on the Importance of Access:
I love the accessibility factor. I am happy to be working on a project on this scale that will be available to fans and friends all over the country at such an approachable price point and yet still be authentic.

“I can be myself around you” - Bruce Wayne x reader
This was written very fast, in the heat of the moment. It was born from a thought I had, about how no one really knows Bruce. Except Alfred maybe ? Most of the time, he’s either “Bruce Wayne, billionaire philanthropist playboy blahblahblah”, or “Big scary Batman” to people. Who really knows Bruce, the real Bruce ? Well. I kinda wrote about that. Quickly written so don't expect a long detailed really planned out story ^^', hope you’ll like it nonetheless :
My masterlist blog : @ella-ravenwood-archives
_________________________________________________
Today, you made a discovery that filled you with nothing but sadness.
And you couldn’t believe that you noticed it just now !
It has been, what ? Six months now, that you were actually steady with Bruce ? And “out in the open”, as in “everyone in Gotham knew that Bruce Wayne wasn’t single anymore” ? And that he was dating that éyounger-than-him girl that came from the poorest Gotham’s neighborhood” ?
Funny what informations people chose to know about someone huh ?
The scandal journalists that wrote all those awful articles about you being a total gold digger, purposefully ignored the fact that you were actually a best selling author, and didn’t need money.
Granted, you were very new in the writing world, but your first book saga was out since a while now, and there was talk of turning it into a movie ! So why were those dumb “journalists” only focused on the fact that you were originally from a poor neighborhood, and grew up with no money ?
It pissed you off, how people already made assumptions about you, without even knowing your actual background. Everyone seemed to know how and where you grew up, this added to the few public appearances you made so far and that was enough for them to think they knew what kind of person you were.
They either thought you were the worst gold digger of them all and faked being shy and such, or some actually shy poor girl that Bruce saved from a life of misery. No matter how many times he denied both those allegations, or what you could say...That’s what everyone was thinking anyway.
Well, you knew what you were in for when you decided to go “public” about your relationship with Bruce. You knew people were going to talk, and you knew that you were going to have to “play a part” at some point so that people would stop questioning everything you did.
But it was still a frustrating situation. Now you didn’t doubt that the public opinion would slowly shift overtime, but it still bothered you to no end that you’d forever have to somewhat be someone else whenever you’d go in public with him. Once again though, you knew what you were getting yourself into. The fact that you couldn’t just be good old you when under the spotlight came with the territory of dating the famous Bruce Wayne.
Plus, public appearances were, in the end, such a small part of your life. A few charities there and there, a few forced date out with your Bruce in fancy restaurants, or a “candid” walk in the park to satisfy the paparazzi. You were still free to be yourself most of the time.
You and Bruce even discovered not so long ago that he just needed to wear “cheap” casual clothes like a simple hoodie and sweatpants, plus plastic sunglasses and a cap, and no one seemed to recognize him. The only reason people spotted him in the streets, was because he wore fancy things.
But wearing some “every day man” stuffs ? It was like if he was invisible. Sure, both women and men still turned around when he walked past them, as he was still very handsome...but no one seemed to even fathom the idea that Bruce Wayne could wear “normal” clothes.
A fact that should have made you aware of a big problem much sooner, by the way. Nobody recognizing him, just because he didn’t “look” like his public persona ? Yeah that was a total given.
That sad discovery you made today, was exactly about that. About how, and now you could see it clearly, no one actually knew the real Bruce.
************
People only knew two sides of Bruce Wayne.
The first side was “The Playboy” : Rich kid. Collects women. Good businessman (because he’s such a smooth talker). Likes to give a lot to charity. Charming social bug. Visionary. A man who most definitely enjoys being in the spotlight, but that also seems compassionate (though some people called THIS, the only true thing about is public persona, “fake” and a “publicity stunt”). He seemed to greatly care about the charities he gave to, but also about Gotham and its inhabitants ! After all, Wayne Inc was the reason the unemployment rate in Gotham City plummeted down !
In short, people just always assumed Bruce Wayne was a carefree and cheery social guy who could crack jokes at the worst of times to loosen up the atmosphere, and swoon anyone with his words and charm.
And then his second side...Like the day and the night, really.
“Batman”. Big scary Batman : Violent and merciless. Focused and emotionless. With a mission to cleanse Gotham (and by extension the world) of crimes no matter what, though with a “no kill” rule. Which didn’t mean that sometimes he didn’t leave a criminal in a very very bad shape...But this violence in his actions helped forged the Batman legend. The fear of the Bat.
Yes. People only knew Bruce as one or the other of those sides. And both of them were, in some ways, fabricated. There were truth in them, of course. The fact that Bruce is a compassionate man that wants to help Gotham and its people. It was the reason those two personas existed.
There was, however, more truth in one of this side than the other.
The only part of the “Playboy” that was true, was his compassion and need to help his peers (the charities and such). And probably how “visionary” he could be, too. But other than that ? Yikes.
Because Bruce never took pleasure in social gatherings, it was actually exhausting for him to talk so much and act like he was having a blast. He never liked collecting women or acting like he was a total idiot who had a lot of money to waste. “The Playboy” only existed as a good cover up for his Batman activities. Because surely, no one would ever think that a lovable “moron” (he did like to play dumb, and his “genius ides” were usually attributed to his publicity team) like “Bruce Wayne” couldn’t be the bat, right ?
Now Batman...Batman was a big part of Bruce. The one born after his parents’ murder. Bruce was Batman. He was indeed focused and could be emotionless (though his stoicism was often mistaken for him not feeling things and detaching himself from current events, while it was the contrary...Bruce felt everything, and sometimes needed to empty his heart to be able to go on).
But Batman’s existence ? It was born from the deep pain he felt after loosing his parents. This terrible night forever changed him, and hardened him into becoming the night vigilante everyone knew. And yes, yes in real life, out of the spotlight, Bruce could be like the Bat often.
Introverted, focused, angry, violent, highly intelligent, always has a plan, doesn’t speak much, have a low tolerance for bad humor, stoic, constantly serious, lead by his trauma...But was he really just that ? Was the Batman really a representation of who Bruce really was ?
If it was the case, how come he could be so sweet to you ? This side of him you saw when it was just you and him, or when he was interacting with little Dickie...It didn’t fit Batman, nor The Playboy.
The way he looked at you, that softness in his eyes, that stupid smile on his face, or when he read bed time stories to Dick, smiling fondly at the little one and ruffling his hair lovingly...That wasn’t the Caped Crusader. That wasn’t “Public” Bruce Wayne.
Who was it ? Who was the real Bruce Wayne ?
************
Bruce didn’t really have friends, when you started to date him. Which made sense, since after his parents’ death he isolated himself, lost his childhood friends, and as he grew up, became “Famous billionaire philantropist Bruce Wayne”, and “The Batman”. Where could he make real friends ?
Because The Playboy ? Well he only had fake friends. Acquaintances really, that he acted as if they were his best friends but secretly couldn’t stand. As The Playboy, Bruce was constantly surrounded by people, but was actually at his loneliest.
Because “those people” ? No one cared about Bruce’s hobbies, they were all so sure he was just that rich kids who liked to party, why would they need to know more right ? He was “everyone’s” friends, everyone loved him. He was just that really chill and funny guy that people wanted to be around of, but never really cared about who he was beyond that.
And when he was into his “playboy, but also business man” mode ? At Wayne inc ? Well he was that super cool and approachable boss, but still people’s boss, you know ? And the one that gave away everyone’s paycheck, so who cared about who he truly was ?
As Batman he most certainly didn’t have any friends.
Though he was starting to make some, in his search for meta-humans. They were all growing close somewhat quickly but...Because of how he created Batman, he was one of the one that was often left on his own. Clark and Arthur, for example, wouldn’t mind hanging out outside of being superheroes, and talk around a good beer or while watching a football match.
They could see each other be friends in the near future. But the Batman ? He was intimidating and unapproachable and clearly didn’t want to get to know any of them, so why would they make the effort ?
Everyone in what would become the Justice League but was still unnamed at the time thought that Bruce was truly Batman. That he was that dark and stoic man, who never smiled and who apparently didn’t know how to say “thank you” or “I need help”. They weren’t quite the amazing friends they’ll become, those who will understand (in big part thanks to you and your kids, and by observing how Bruce interacted with you all) that Bruce Wayne is much more than just a big scary bat. Nope.
At the time, they were just all convinced they knew what kind of man Bruce was. Who was the Batman. They saw him fight, heard him talk, saw him act...He sounded more like a machine than a human being. And they just thought they had him all figured out.
But Bruce was a much more complicated man than everyone thought. Only people always stopped at his first appearance. Granted, it was in big part because Bruce himself kept everyone at distance. Made them believe he was truly that playboy, or Batman.
No one. No one truly knew who Bruce really was. Alfred once knew, but after Bruce’s parents’ death, the boy changed and though it was clear he cared for Alfred like he would for his own father, Bruce didn’t share much of his own thoughts anymore. Or his worries. Or...himself in general.
He closed himself, locked his heart away. And became the Playboy, or the Batman. And everyone, everyone thought they had him figured out.
But no one really did.
************
This fact, the way people didn’t seem to care to know him more than what they saw, was only made clear the day you asked him a simple question :
“What is your favorite thing to do ?”
He turned to you, taken aback by this sudden question, and you look at him curiously. What ?
To you, it made sense that you were asking that right now. In your head, your mind went a thousands different directions, as you and him were sitting around the kitchen counter, eating breakfast. You were thinking about many things, ended up thinking about what you liked to do, and suddenly realized that...
You never really saw Bruce do something he chose to ? He was either working hard at his company, acting like he was a social bug at galas and other charities, or being a night vigilante. He was a very busy man, and except for when he went on a date with you, he never really did anything for fun ?
But you also realized that all the dates you went on, in the past six months, were mainly activities YOU enjoyed. It didn’t mean he didn’t like them, of course, but it seemed he usually planned your outings out according to your taste ? To what he knew of you ?
You haven’t really noticed before, but there, as you were eating your cereal and your brain was slowly awakening after a very short night, the thought suddenly popped in your mind. And so you asked.
“What is your favorite thing to do ?”
His surprise passed (after all he was starting to get used to your quirk, and it was often that you’d tell him something completely out of context, after it went through a thousand different routes in your head, kind of expecting him to get it...until you realized he didn’t have all the cards in hands to understand), he answers :
“You.”
He smiles mischievously at you and it takes a few seconds for you to understand what he means. This early in the morning, and after such few hours of sleep, you’re not really quite awake yet. But then you finally understand and say, rolling your eyes to try to hide how flustered he just made you :
“I’m serious Bruce, what do you do for fun ?”
“Well my answer was serious too. I do love...being with you. Not particularly, you know, doing what makes your face hot right now, - he gives you a smug smile and you stick your tongue out at him - but I enjoy being with you.”
You ponder his answer for a few seconds and...You’re not satisfied with it. You do love being with him too, doing things with him wether it is to watch a movie, or going bowling or whatever. But you also enjoy doing many things alone, like writing, reading etc etc...you have so many hobbies ! He must too, right ?
Because he can’t possibly actually enjoy being the Batman (spoiler alert : he doesn’t. He does it because he thinks he has to, but he canonically said it didn’t make him happy). So that couldn’t count. And he...He must have a hobby !
“No but like, an activity. On your own ? And I swear if you say something dirty I’ll dump my cereal bowl on your head. I’m being actually serious, Bruce. Really. Don’t dismiss my question this time, please.”
He looks curiously at you for a few seconds, again surprised that you even care about such a thing. He couldn’t even remember the last time someone asked him what he liked to do. Asked him genuinely. But the face you make makes his heart flutter, and makes him want to be honest with you.
To actually think about it, and answer you. Mainly because...It’s strange. The way you look at him. You really want to know. And you’re...You’re the first person in decades, who really wants to know more than what he shows.
It touches him even more so than you’re one of the very few person who knows about his night activities. You’re one of the only few people who knows he’s Batman, who knows more about him than most...And yet you want to know more ?
You always asked him questions, but so far he often deflected them successfully by distracting you or something.
Though clearly, by your last sentence about him dismissing your question, he hasn’t been as smoothed as he thought he was, and realized you just never wanted to push him to tell you things, instead, you wanted him to just want to tell you things. Which is why this time...this time ? In the early morning hours ? As you had big bags under your eyes and a your third cup of coffee in hand ? Staring at him so intently, after asking such a simple yet meaningful question...He feels like he can tell you the truth.
He takes a few moments to ponder, and you observe him. He really seems to think about it now, And then he says :
“I-I don’t know.”
You raise your eyebrows at him, and say, unconvinced and disappointed that once more he’s going to not answer one of your question about him :
“What do you mean you don’t know ? Bruce I’m really asking because I-”
“No no, I know you’re being serious. And I am too. I...I’m just not sure what I like to do, that is all. My life...My life is busy. You know it. I don’t sleep much, I work a lot both days and nights, I train, I go to events I don’t want to go to...Again and again and again. I virtually have no free time. Now, since I met you, I found ways to actually take free times, and relax, but that’s because I really like being with you because...”
Silence. He averts his eyes, and feels this strange feeling he hasn’t felt in so long...Total and utter emotional vulnerability. It has been literal decades, since he felt that way. It’s not a bad feeling, on the contrary.
It’s the first time in a very very long time, that he feels like he want to say what’s really on his mind. That he feels like talking. That he feels like just...like just...
“Because ?”
Like just being himself. Bruce Wayne. The real Bruce Wayne. Not only that fake playboy persona, or the one he became after his parents’ death.
Sure he’s that too.
But not only. And it hits him. Eureka. Of course. Of course you would be the one to make him feel like that. Make him feel like he can be himself, truly himself.
It’s all sudden, and it makes him feel such a wide range of emotion. And it started from a simple, yet meaningful question.
“Bruce ? Because what ?”
He looks at you, and it’s your turn to be taken aback by what you see in his eyes. You know he loves you, he made it clear many times. You know he really, really does love you. But what you see in his eyes right now, almost makes you cry.
Gratitude. It’s goddamn gratitude. And for what ? Just because you asked him what he liked to do. Why was this such a big deal ?
But then you realize why he’s acting that way. Why he seems so moved by all of that. And that’s when you make your sad little discovery...No one truly knows Bruce Wayne.
They only know what he wants them to know, and do not care to know more. They only know the Playboy, and Batman. And they never really want to know more about him. Never really want to dig deeper. And ask simple, yet meaningful questions like : “What is your favorite thing to do ?”
“I-”
He starts, voice choked. And it makes you want to cry even more, that he feels so much about such a simple thing. About someone just wanting to know him. The real him.
“I like being with you because I can be myself, around you. I don’t have to wear a mask. Any mask. I can just...show myself. Truly.”
It looks like he wants to continue, to talk to you more about what he feels right now, but he keeps shaking his head, chuckling nervously and searching for his words. And you decide it’s ok.
It’s ok if he doesn’t quite know yet what he likes to do.
If you have to remind him that he can enjoy things, that he can relax and do things he loves...Then you will. Every day if you have to.
If you have to constantly ask him what he likes, until he finally figures it out. Until he finally remembers what he enjoys to do on his own, then so be it.
You don’t mind. On the contrary. You’re flattered for now he can only say he greatly enjoys your company, and that you make him feel like he can be himself...But you want him to truly be himself around you. To remember what it is to have hobbies. True hobbies. That you actually like doing, and not things you force yourself to do.
You’re flattered that right now, all he can mutter is that he likes hanging out with you, but you’ll never give up on helping him becoming himself again. His true self. Without fear of whatever consequences he thought would happen if he showed his true colors to others.
Especially since his actual “true colors” ? They’re lovely. He’s lovely. The loveliest man you’ve ever met. You chuckle to yourself thinking about that, and how people would think you’re crazy for thinking of Bruce Wayne as “lovely”.
But it’s because none of them know him. Truly know him.
And you ? Well, you still don’t quite truly know him either. But right now, you’re definitely on the right path to.
He’s still looking for a way to answer you, but you think that for today, he’s made already many efforts. In admitting that he can be himself around you, without masks...it’s already a big step. And you don’t want to overwork him, after all, this is all new again for him.
Someone caring enough, and being stubborn enough to not give up, to get to know his true self. So you just smile at him, and reach a hand to his cheek, stroking it tenderly.
“It’s alright. Oh, and I enjoy being with you too. I also love to read. And to write. And to do many other things, but we’ll talk more about it later. It’s ok. You’re good.”
Bruce doesn’t know what to say. It’s so rare, that someone cares that much about him...There’s Alfred and Dick, of course, but it’s not quite the same, for some reasons. Because with them, he puts up boundaries on purpose, so that they don’t get too close. But here you are, just hopping over the walls he settled all around him and casually walking towards him asking things like : “what is your favorite thing to do ?”. And he feels like you’re about to tear down all his walls so he’ll let more people in, too...
You lean towards him, and lay a soft loving kiss on his lips. He answers eagerly, of course, realizing for the first time, after six months of relationship, how much he truly, truly loves you. He thinks he would probably die if you...
“AH EWWW !! GET A ROOM !!”
A small voice coming from the entrance of the kitchen yells. You both turn to it, startled, only to be met with the vision of a very disgusted Dickie, and an amused butler.
************
So yes. Yes “The Playboy” was part of who Bruce was, because it showed his dedication to his work, city etc etc...He was being someone he hated to be just so people wouldn’t suspect he could be the Batman.
Yes, Batman himself was a big part of Bruce’s personality...
But he wasn’t just that. You always kind of knew, but now were sure of it.
From that day on, you made sure to do everything you could to know the real Bruce. To not just get fooled by what he wants people to know about him.
But most importantly, to give him a safe place where he could truly be himself. That guy you learned everything about, over the course of the years, and who was a huge movie nerd, who loved to cuddle and read sappy poetry. Who had odd music taste (for real, how could someone go from “Chopin” to “The Beastie Boys” that quickly ?!), and whose favorite ice cream flavor was melon.
That guy who could actually be extremely silly and childish if given the opportunity to be. That guy who was driven by love, and not sadness and the need for vengeance (maybe he used to be, driven by vengeance...but as he grew as Batman, it became quite clear that was was driving him has always been love. Love for his parents, for you, for his kids, for Alfred, for his city etc etc...).
That guy that...that...That you loved unconditionally. That loved you more than anything else. So much so in fact, that he felt you were the only one around whom he could truly be himself.
Of course, around his children and Alfred, he was also much different than his social public persona (ex-playboy) and than Batman. He was more tender and patient and loving. And with the friends he made along the way ? Clark, Diana, Barry and all of them ? He was also more relaxed and close to who he truly was. But he still held back on some aspect of his personality.
While with you ? You accepted him so fully, with open arms, that he couldn’t help but be himself. Years and years of training to be someone else, to close his heart to people in fear of loosing them...Hiding his true, gentle self because he knew this world wasn’t kind to the gentle souls.
And here you were. Unlocking who Bruce was before his parents’ murder. Making all his pain and worries fly away, and allowing him to be his true self. Not just a ghost of himself, or showing just some sides of himself and not his entire being...No.
You freed him. You reminded him of who he was. Before he became that man full of pain and resentment and who felt too many things without being able to express them. You reminded him of who he was, by asking a simple yet meaningful question.
Over the years, he finally found an answer to this. He actually liked to do a lot of things. And found new activities he enjoyed every now and then, as you encouraged him to explore more and such.
And all of this because... :
“I can be myself around you.”

ANALYSIS of The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun
Denada Permatasari. 9 September 2017.
Tumblr media
Fig 1. William Blake’s The Great Red Dragon and The Woman Clothed with the Sun, circa 1803-5.
Tumblr media
Fig 2. Under the same title and artist, circa 1800.
In this essay I will talk about just two out of four of Blake’s The Red Dragon series. The first painting (Fig. 1) was done in watercolour, chalk, and pen. Its dimension is 43.5 x 34.5 cm and was made circa 1803-5. The second (Fig. 2) was done in watercolour and its size is 15.75 x 12.75” (40 x 32.4 cm), made circa 1800. Currently, they are exhibited at different museums.
Both paintings are a part of a larger series, namely Apocalypse, commissioned by Thomas Butts. He commissioned Blake to illustrate biblical passages (Rosenblum and Janson 60), and the first Great Red Dragon painting (Fig. 1) in this essay are a representation of Revelations 12 verse 1-4 (qtd. in Lister 89):
1And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars;
2And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
3And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth; and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
I immediately note that Blake painted the dragon not as a conventional, fully-reptilian dragon but instead as a half-human, half-something else. Further research tells me that the winged, impressive figure is the devil, Satan (Hoagwood 3). The woman was painted brightly, as she is clothed with the sun, but oddly, she is in an unusual, unnatural horizontal pose. She looks up at him, shocked, as if she is in the middle of praying (shown by her hands above head) and then got interrupted by Satan’s unexpected presence. The devil also dominates the artwork, taking up two-thirds of the space, his outstretched wings going beyond the canvas.
I interpret this as Blake wanting to exert the power, the utter dominance of Satan against the bright woman below him, a show of good versus evil, and evil is winning. But the story obviously doesn’t end there, as I will get into the second painting and then conclude the paintings as a whole after I analyse them separately beforehand.
The second painting (Fig. 2) shows the devil now hovering above her, as a continuation of Revelations 12, verse 13-16 (New International Version):
13When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.
14The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent's reach.
15Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent.
16But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth.
Now, the woman is in the possession of new eagle wings, and has her arms outstretched wide open, as if challenging the devil. The zig-zag lines around the woman are the river spewed from his mouth, but obviously it fails to drown to woman as he intended. The devil is still above the woman, but he no longer dominates the canvas, signifying the changed power dynamic between the two forces.
Knowing now that the paintings are chronological (even though Blake made the second painting earlier), I will say that Blake illustrates that at first glance, evil has the upper hand, but at the end, goodness triumphs. While this meaning is okay, I decided to further my research to include the artist and the time period, and my findings give me a deep insight that I didn’t expect.
First, I learned that Blake is “a private rebel who wished to refect virtually the entire system of art, society and religion … in favor of a grandiose private structure of new myths, new moral truths … of what he saw as the corrupt status quo.” (Rosenblum and Janson 59). His use of watercolour indicates that aspect rebellious aspect of Blake, as oil was the standard of creating art in his time era (mid-18th century Romanticism), as explained that Blake “rejected the formal and descriptive formulae of early nineteenth-century painting.” (Maheux 125) and he “vehemently opposed to oils—they did not please him or comport with his style” (Gilchrist 369).
Second, the social and political context during the time both paintings were produced. Blake witnessed and even taken part in the American and French revolutions that happened around 1800. Blake and most artists of his time considered those events as “a scriptural metaphor of what [was happening in that time] –a period of devastating and high-minded revolutions, of radical change …” (Rosenblum and Janson 60). He painted his version of Revelations as a representation of the fundamental shift in worldview that was happening, and this is further compounded by his religious upbringing.
Last but not least, in response of my initial understanding of placement and how it relates to power dynamics: The devil above, and woman below, is actually a recurring motif in Blake’s works, not necessarily a power show. The seer/visionary subject is placed below, with their visions above them (Hoagwood 1). This denounces my first understanding of the positioning choice of the subjects. Blake transformed a literal passage into a mythical one, “[his] vision destroys matter, leaving nothing but bolts of imaginative energy” (Rosenblum and Janson 60).
To finish, I conclude that The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in the Sun paintings reveals the historical attitude during the revolution era that was tightly interwoven with religious concerns, and also a novel way of depicting religious morality. The paintings make me realise that our perception of reality is deeply coloured by our upbringing and cultural values. Differences in interpretation will happen no matter what, hence this difference should be celebrated as it enriches my (and to an extension everyone’s) understanding of the world.

Fast & Furious business As Canada’s largest race simulation venue, TracksVR Virtual Racing Inc. opened its doors in 2018, in Calgary, Alberta, by Howard Trawick, the visionary founder and his wife (co-partner), out of passion for car racing and virtual reality. His deeply ingrained love of car racing started while growing up in Alberta at an era when there were many more car racing activities and events. He was hooked ever since and naturally progressed through a 25-year career in the car industry. They have got a lot of wizardry going on in the background. They can start all the machines at the same time, and everyone can race on the same track simultaneously. Thus, adding that additional level of immersion for all race drivers. With the VR headsets, everywhere you look, the generated world is there, and especially in racing, that is paramount. With a VR headset, you can turn your head anywhere and you are still fully immersed in the experience. This unique technology enables them to do streaming and eSports. Excellent customer service is a major factor in their competitive advantage quiver, as they not only say it, they actually live it and breath it, day in and day out. The Knucklehead of Silicon Valley
Tumblr media
The Knucklehead of Silicon Valley by G. Craig Vachon
Comedic-spy thriller examines Silicon Valley's unbridled innovation culture. Ralph Gibsen isn’t your typical spy. In fact, he may not be a spy at all. He's lumpy, blundering and abysmal at chatting up the fairer sex. Yet, he is attracting a significant amount of attention from the intelligence community. After all, as a 30-year Silicon Valley mainstay, he can phish your passwords, bust firewalls, and has developed software used by millions to circumvent government censorship. And now, he thinks he has stumbled upon a cabal who is pushing to misuse his own technology for world domination. Ralph helps create an educational Tool that maps a learner’s neurological processes and pinpoints the exact moment a student learns. But the Tool can also manipulate people’s beliefs. At least, that what several influential people think. Soon, Ralph finds himself the target of increasingly complex attacks on his businesses, reputation, freedom, and life. Ralph enlists an eclectic group of ‘frenemies’ to thwart this nefarious plot. McKenna may or may not still work for the CIA. Beautiful Eva may work for the Chinese government, who wants the Tool for themselves. Even Ralph’s lovely wife Jen could be involved... Ralph simply isn’t equipped to figure it out. And the world is closing in. Early reviews of the ARC include: "It's all too rare to find a fun, seat-of-your-pants, literary romp like this. I got wonderfully lost with Ralph in the many cultures as he travels around the planet. And kudos for the author in the entertaining explanation of how investors examine entrepreneurial ventures for investment. As an investor myself, a lot of the anecdotes and stories resonated with me...wonderful reading". Raz Zia [Managing Director of Aldrich Capital / Former MD at Goldman Sachs]. “If a major amusement park ever wanted to build the ultimate spy-adventure ride with mystery, suspense, white-knuckle twists and turns, comedy, and romance, 'The Knucklehead of Silicon Valley' would be the perfect blueprint. Not only did I love the ride, but as with all great adventures, I learned a hell of a lot. I thought I knew what went on in the mythological land of Silicon Valley, but I had no idea how insane it truly is.” Bill Scott Glasser [Former Producer of Fox Television's America's Most Wanted] This thriller takes us through an insider's view of high-tech Silicon Valley culture, authentically capturing its brilliance and ambition, as well as its silliness and hubris. Smart and captivating, it follows the protagonist who is at times ham-fisted and dim, other times deft and clever, through a fascinating journey of intrigue along the cutting edge of tech. Filled with humor, suspense, whimsy, whit and moments of pure heart, this read is fascinating, educational, and a heck of a lot of fun.- Jordy Berson, Head of BitTorrent Inc Knucklehead is like being shot out of an Ethernet cable lined with exotic travel and baroque paintings and landing on a sea of electricity" Peterson Conway [Adventurer, Farmer, PayPal mafia] “This novel’s topic is so important: We stand in the middle of a storm – not just a geopolitical one, but a cyberpolitical one. It feels as if no one trusts anyone any more, and suspicion and confusion reign across our delicate cyberworld. Which way do we turn?” Eugene Kaspersky [Hacker-hunter and CEO of Kaspersky Labs] "A terrific yarn with characters just absurd enough that they might be fictional, but not quite so absurd that the reading is left wondering who they really are or who they were based on - and that maybe she ought to be paying more attention to the promise and perils of technology. A fun and funny fictional look behind the Silicon Valley curtain at a world or misfits, schemers, brilliant visionaries, and accidental heroes." Peter Loge {Associate professor, School of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University, Director, Project on Ethics in Political Communication, Author, Soccer Thinking for Management Success] “A modern day ‘Being There’ – if Peter Sellers' Chauncey were a Silicon Valley tech investor! You will not only be thoroughly entertained but thoroughly educated as to the insanity that is the world of IPOs, internet privacy and the potential of high-tech's misuse.” Brian Frazer [Author, Cartoons With my Dad: How art drew us together] “A wonderfully exciting and comedic tale of Ralph, a venture capitalist and unlikely spy that leads us through an international tale of intrigue while unlocking the secrets of Silicon Valley. Fascinating and an absolute joy to read!” Tim Martin [CEO of Lifeprint]

Tightwads
Matthew 6:19-21
Mrs. Bertha Adams, 71 years old, died alone in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Easter Sunday. The coroner's report read: "Cause of death . . . malnutrition." She had wasted away to fifty pounds.
When the state authorities made their preliminary investigation of Mrs. Adams' home, they found a veritable "pigpen . . . the biggest mess you can imagine." The woman had begged food from neighbors' back doors and gotten what clothing she had from the Salvation Army. From all outward appearances she was a penniless recluse. But such was not the case.
Amid the jumble of her unclean, disheveled belongings, the officials found two keys to safe-deposit boxes at two different local banks. In the first box were over 700 AT&T stock certificates, plus hundreds of other valuable certificates, bonds, and solid financial securities, not to mention a stack of cash amounting to nearly $200,000. The second box contained $600,000. Adding the net worth of both boxes, they found well over a million dollars.
Charles Osgood, reporting the story on CBS radio, announced that the estate would probably go to a distant niece and nephew, neither of whom dreamed their aunt had a thin dime to her name.
Don't you wonder about this woman? Why, oh, why would anybody salt away all that bread in two tiny boxes, month after month, year after year, and refuse to spend even enough for food to stay alive?
Fact is, Bertha Adams wasn't saving her money; she was worshiping it . . . hoarding it . . . gaining a twisted satisfaction out of watching the stacks grow higher as she shuffled along the streets wearing the garb of a beggar.
I'm a firm believer in saving, investing, intelligent spending, and wise money management. But I have trouble finding one word of scriptural support for being a tightwad! Never have I seen one who could dream broad dreams or see vast visions of what God can do in spite of man's limitations.
Give me a handful of "greathearts" . . . generous, openhanded, visionary, spiritually minded givers . . . magnanimous giants with God who get excited about abandoning themselves to Him. The name of the game is not CAUTION—it's still VISION, isn't it? Seems like I read somewhere that those without it perish.
And speaking of that, when they buried Bertha Adams, she didn't take a penny with her.
Some folks serve the almighty dollar far more faithfully than the Almighty God. They get greater delight out of balancing the budget than watching the Lord multiply the loaves and fishes.
