Luzamity and I can swear to you that they made It ten times better than Caitvi.

Amity went from a rival/enemy to a friend with a Crush on Luz to be Luz girlfriend and important person to her Friends.

Caitvi had a Piltover woman getting out a prisioner for conviniece, they talked and got to Know each other better, same Piltover woman Who tried to kill her mother murderer and not minding killing a child in the process. Then she beat Up the Girl she freed and LEFT HER TO ROOT, she didn't look back until Fate but them together again.

And Cait didn't even apologize to Vi, sure she helped to keep Vander safe but in the end It didn't Matter. Taking if Jinx is alive or not (I belive she is but everyone has their Takes) Cait WAS SMILING IN FRONT OF VI, AKA Jinx sister!.

They had barely delevlopment and yet they dare to compare them?!

Oh sure now that we mentioned Steven Universe Let's Talk about It, shall we?

I think they don't need a while text to explain.

These gems were doing their roles until Fate made them accidentaly fuse, they escaped punishment and Saw the wonders of fusión and earth, joined the rebelion to save the beauty they Saw, Saw how their Friends turned into Monsters and stayed strong, stayed determined. They fell apart and go back together. They married, they git amnesia in a movie and still managed to fall in love again.

That's peak. Something Caitvi failed to do.

that particular flavour of caitvi stans screeching at critics of S2 about how, "you just wanted a simplistic happy ending! you can't handle the NUANCE! you have no MEDIA LITERACY!" while simultaneously insisting that we should all unquestioningly accept and praise arcane for giving us caitvi, which they hold up as the sine qua non of wlw representation, because their primary basis for comparison is... legend of korra. is she-ra. is owl house. is steven universe.

none of this is shade on those shows. all of these are okay-to-good-to-great shows, that did genuinely brave things with regard to representation and which often handled mature subject matters in age-appropriate ways. you know what they also are?

children's cartoons. they are cartoons for children.

sorry, when shows like black sails and andor exist, which have prominent wlw characters/ships, and which embed those ships in actually well-written, complex, adult narratives about freedom, oppression, rebellion, and self-determination, arcane doing a, "diversity win! your cops are lesbians!" is not enough for me to give it brownie points.

Sometimes I think about how and why some people had such a *bad* reaction to the end of Steven Universe, specifically in regards to the Diamonds living.

Even though they no longer are causing harm to others and are able to actually undo some of their previous harm by living, some folks reacted as though this ending was somehow morally suspect. Morally bankrupt, even.

And I think it might be because so many of us were raised on a very specific kind of kids media trope:

They all fall to their deaths.

Disney loves chucking their bad guys off cliffs. And it makes sense- in a moral framework where villains *must* be punished (regardless of whether their death will actually prevent further harm or not), but killing of any kind is morally bad for the hero, the narrative must find a way to kill the villain without the protagonists doing a murder.

It's a moral assumption that a person can *deserve* to die, that it is cosmically just for them to die, that them dying is evidence that the story itself is morally good and correct. Scar *deserves* to die, but it would be bad for Simba to kill him. So....cliff. (edit: yes, cliff then hyenas. But cliff first. Lol.)

Steven Universe, whatever else it's faults, took a step back and said "but if killing people is bad, then people dying is bad", and instead of dropping White Diamond off a cliff, asked "what would actual *restorative*, not punitive, justice look like? What would actual reparations mean here? If the goal is to heal, not just to punish, how do we handle those who have done harm?" And then did that.

Which I think is interesting, and that there was pushback against it is interesting.

It also reminds me of the folks who get very weird about Aang not killing Ozai at the end of Avatar. And like, Ozai still gets chucked in prison, so it doesn't even push back on our cultural ideas of punitive justice *that much.* and still, I've seen people get real mad that the child monk who is the last survivor of a genocide that wiped out his entire pacifist culture didn't do a murder.
