That comment about Leon touching Luis more intimately is so real UGH
Like I remember having a genuine moment of raising a brow and staring at my screen processing it for a moment when they showed Leon holding his hand so tenderly??? Like??? Huh???? Also the fact that the next scene opens up with him still holding his hand has me in a chokehold. I adore how touchy Leon is in the RE4R, with Ashley and Luis especially.
It wasn't just the touching, either. Luis's entire death sequence was staggeringly intimate.
Tumblr media
This moment was genuinely shocking to me.
I think Leon lighting Luis's cigarette for him was as shocking to me as Leon saying "Who knows?" to Ashley, re: where Ada's going (because that was the moment that I realized that they really, really did actually retcon aeon).
This is the single most intimate moment in the entire series. More intimate than Leon and Ada's OG kiss, more intimate than Steve's death scene in CVX, more intimate than Chris holding Jill in RE5.
And I'll tell you why.
It's because this moment requires a conscious, deliberate sacrifice of Leon's principles.
In this moment, it doesn't matter that Luis is a former Umbrella researcher. It doesn't matter that the lighter is engraved with the Umbrella logo. It doesn't matter that Leon is aiding and participating in Luis smoking -- something that Leon is personally against.
None of that shit matters.
Leon scoops up that lighter, flips open the lid, and lights Luis's cigarette for him because what actually matters to Leon in this moment is opening his heart and reaching out to create a real connection with a dying man.
This is the most humanity that any RE character has ever shown towards another.
It's a moment where neither character speaks; it's so silent that you can hear the paper and the tobacco of the cigarette crackle beneath the flame. And Luis accepts the openness of Leon's heart by literally breathing it in.
RE has never been -- and probably will never be -- more intimate or more human than this moment in this scene. It was something really special.

What do you expect and what would you like for the CV remake?
(If we ever have one 💔)
well, we know we're getting one. it's already leaked.
i just want jubilantly nihilist DSC steve back. i want him to end up being the most relatable character in the series because of it LMAO because it's in him. he has the potential. DSC showed it. i want him to be self-deprecating and have satirical commentary.
i also want alfred to get the salazar treatment -- but better. like, salazar from OG to remake became actually menacing and creepy, but he still retained his meme status. and that's a hard line to toe. the only criticism i have is that they pulled some of his best lines when they really didn't need to. if they can give alfred a true menace factor while also retaining his ridiculous laugh, for example, that's what i want.
alexia's backstory needs to be in the game. most of her backstory was told in wesker's report 2, and that's unacceptable. she has the potential to be just as iconic as wesker, and CVXR needs to give her that. judging from what hirabayashi's team did with krauser, though, i'm not worried. i think alexia will get the spotlight and attention she deserves.
i'm really excited to see what this team will do with the fairytale aspect of CVX -- because that was the first RE game to actually play with that trope. we know that hirabayashi fucking loves fairytales, so this should be a slam dunk. that having been said, though, i don't want claire and steve to get the leon and ashley treatment, just because it's been done already.
what i think would be interesting is like...
so, the guys on the final fantasy teams at square enix have VERY CLEARLY wanted to make a horror game for a long time. there are real horror sequences in 14, 15, 16, and 7R that are just begging to be turned into full games.
i want hirabayashi to make the game that the SE guys have always wanted to make. i want it to be a proper horror fantasy (as opposed to the light horror fantasy of RE4make) and have him play with the ideas of FF while he does it. FF is primarily a series about going against fate and writing your own story. i would love CVXR to be a game that twists that and tries to force claire and steve into specific roles, has them break those roles, but then ultimately has steve still die anyway because there actually was no escaping his fate.
that's what i want.
i don't think i'll get that. but i think that'd be neat.
but i think, based on hirabayashi's track record, i'm going to like whatever he comes up with.

Hello~ hopped over from AO3 to Tumblr after reading your fic (which is wonderful btw) - hope you don't mind! As someone who frequents the barren AO3 tag and then saw your askbox title I had to stop by.
Anyway actual question! I'd love to hear why the Claire/Steve dynamic appeals to you. Whether that answer be about the characters or anything (or if you don't want to answer at all, that's totally fine too!), I'd love to hear your thoughts on it as a fellow burnfield shipper/writer. It'd be like a little author's commentary track for when I reread your fic!
Anyway whoa this was long, sorry. And hope you have a good day~ thanks again
Thank you again btw, your comment on AO3 had me totally elated; I didn't really expect anyone to actually read my fic, and then actually like it 😭
The boring part of why I like Claire and Steve together is because they are both two of my favorite characters. Steve is my #1 favorite RE character, and Claire is in my top 3, I just love them both a lot!
But on their actual relationship, I'm a huge fan of characters that would do anything to protect the other. Claire starts CVX and DSC clearly not expecting much from Steve (and in CVX, I'm sure it doesn't help when he gets caught in that trap in the Palace really early on and she has to rescue him lol), but there is a clear, gradual warming up toward him as the game goes on, even if she's hardened up a little since the events of RE2. She's very gentle with him even when Steve can be a bit difficult, like when he has to shoot his dad and is upset afterward or when he says guns are more reliable than people. Her reaction after his death which i'm still in denial about haha is just gut wrenching, she seems so distraught and it shows how much she'd come to like him.
And from Steve's side, he's obviously lonely, dealing with the tragic circumstances of being imprisoned by no fault of his own, his mother dying, the disappointment of what his father did. He has a hard time trusting people, and that extends even to Claire early on. I just love how you can see his feelings for her start to grow and how he finally has someone to trust.
One of my favorite things about the Cleve/Burnfield ship are the times Steve is quick to try to protect Claire, even though she's obviously the more capable one. He's just a civilian and is clearly coping with the horrifying situation they are in with humor and things like that, but even so, he still does things like rush in front of Claire when they confront Nosferatu. It's just so sweet ❤️
And even if Darkside Chronicles isn't technically canon, it's so fun seeing Claire and Steve together for almost the whole game. They grow to have such a fun, playful rapport with one another. Darkside Chronicles also gave me one of my favorite moments when Steve is ready to pilot that plane out of Rockfort Island and Claire puts her hand over his and they pull that lever together, ahhhhhh it's such a short but soft little gesture
Sorry this got SUPER long!!! I was happy to have the perfect opportunity to gush over Claire and Steve lol, thank you so much again for the ask!!!
I hope you have a wonderful day too!!
(also, you have good taste being a Gundam fan too with the Kamille icon 👍)

I've seen people on twitter talk about characters and trauma but none of them brought up Sheva, Manuela, Ashley, Steve, Ada, ECT. cause they're "not interesting and just poorly written" and would rather talk about the main characters and even Wesker (yuck)
Sorry for the late answer my computer just literally wasn't working lol!!
EEEEEE this is actually perfect because I've always wanted to talk about this but have never been able to articulate it properly so here we go. First tho I always find it funny when people talk about ANY resi character being poorly written and others not poorly written like.... This is Resident Evil... it's all poorly written (half-joking).
It's actually ironic to me that despite resi fans constantly talking about character trauma they bring up the most boring characters with regards to that. It is absolutely vital to Resident Evil that the main characters (Jill, Chris, and Leon, Claire to a certain extent) do not actually respond or react to their traumatic events.
Those three all respond in the same way which is to become jaded military bioweapon killers. Yes there's some exceptions, like Leon's dialogue in darkside chronicles or Chris and Jill "talking" about what happened in RE5 in Death Island, but for the most part? Nothing. This is because (to me, at least,) Capcom can't figure out what to do with them. I mean, it worked in the past because Resident Evil was not really a character-driven story at all, and they just didn't really dive into the characters' reactions to their circumstances much. Most of it is just "man this is just like Raccoon City."
The remakes definitely are though, trying to go for a more realistic and grounded approach, and that means addressing the characters' traumas more. It's too early to tell if that's done well yet to be honest, but so far I personally think the same problem is happening. The characters all react to the zombie apocalypse, yes, but nothing much comes of it. Even though Leon is explicitly Not Okay after RE2R, he's the perfect bioweapon killing machine in RE4R and it just doesn't quite match up with what I think Capcom is going for. But again, it's too early to tell 100%.
On the other hand, the other characters, side characters like Sheva, Manuela, Ashley, Steve, Ada... they're definitely MUCH more interesting and I actually think its because they're side characters or one-off characters. Because of the likelihood we'll never see them again, there's more of a story behind them. Their stories are contained to the (typically) one game they're in and we can build off of that! IMO they have more to work with because Capcom doesn't go into depth with their main characters! It's infuriating that a lot of the side characters are pushed to the side by fans just because they don't appear in as many games! I feel like a lot of these people too just have a limited understanding of them as well, like barely anyone knows about Manuela, a lot of people write off CVX Steve and only pay attention to DSC Steve, and Ashley, Sheva, and Ada tend to be reduced to caricatures of themselves.
I personally think these side characters are just much more engaging than the same old "we keep fighting zombies and stubborn bioterrorists and this is just our life now" main characters!

imagining steve working with the european branch of the bsaa for a while before claire ( or chris since it's dependent if we're going by og cvx or darkside chronicles version of events since chris doesn't even see him in the og game ) somehow finds out

I love REmake
Tumblr media
Context, this is my first playthrough and also the first time I died.
Um, guys.. don't save like three maps ago. Just because you've traveled a lot doesn't mean you'll need to save somewhere else. I've gone through ink ribbons before, and it wasn't that bad. Honestly I don't mind, I just need Google a lot 💔 (I'm sorry for all the souls who couldn't finish games with a quick search) I actually probably used the most brain power in a game then I ever have once in my life.
I was stressing so bad at this part that I barely made it out. But it's okay. I died like two steps later anyway. After I beat REmake, I'll move back to CVX. I had to take a break. Steve stressed me out too much.
ALSO?? I HAD NO IDEA I WAS SUPPOSED TO USE THE LIGHTER TO BURN ZOMBIES UNTIL THEY BECAME CRIMSON HEADS. I WAS STRUGGLING SO BAD. THIS SHORGUN IS MY BABY.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
I’m really glad RE4 got a remake, it’s amazing! But I’m kinda sad that RE: CVX didn’t get one. I mean, I miss Steve like a lot!
Since I’m sad about the lack of Steve Burnside content, I try the AI art thing and I fail so miserably it’s so funny. The only thing I got worth showing are those:
Tumblr media
Here’s Steve as a Jock on a netflix TV series.
Tumblr media
and now here’s Steve at 45 years old.
Here’s the stuff you didn’t need to see today!

Start a war, profit from the war and make sure beforehand that there are plenty of brainwashed college students and disruptors to help push your agenda.
"There are increasing reports suggesting that intelligence agencies, including those of Israel and the United States, had intercepted information about the Hamas attack. Concurrently, the recent stock transactions by certain members of Congress, where they significantly invested in defense stocks just two weeks ago, have sparked questions regarding whether they had advanced knowledge of the unfolding events.
U.S. Congress members have been investing in stocks related to war and defense. Several of them purchased shares of General Dynamics ($GD), a major defense company. Additionally, many Republicans have heavily invested in oil and energy companies, with purchases in ExxonMobil ($XOM), Devon Energy ($DVN), and Chevron ($CVX).
The public is curious about how they had this information when others did not.
Here is the list of U.S. Congress members who currently hold stocks that could be influenced by developments in the Middle East, including Tommy Tuberville and MTG."

You still think Capcom won't commit to any ships then? If so then maybe this was a smart move from them
they've really given me no reason to believe that they'll commit to any ships. it hampers them in terms of storytelling, so why would they bother?
like. not committing to a claire ship allowed them to do the steve storyline in CVX AND also the neil storyline in rev2.
not committing to aeon allowed them to whore out leon and turn RE4make into a fairy tale.
not committing to valenfield allowed them to remove chris from the BSAA and potentially turn jill onto her own path.
like... there's no benefit to doing it. it'd alienate big parts of their audience and hamstring their stories.
