There are many pieces of media that cracked my egg, but I have to admit that one of them was “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” But not in the way that I think even I realized at the time.

I was still exploring gender and gender nonconformity, and the song I keep returning to is “The Origin of Love.” At the time, I thought it was a love song, and it is.

But I keep looking at the figure at the end of the song’s animation: a face, two eyes, no mouth, split down the center.

Perhaps the popular reading is that it represents two separate individuals, and I was left wondering where my other half was, and whether they were a boy or a girl or neither. But now I’m realizing that maybe I was always just one great, rolling keg of a person, that I was always a man and a woman, a child of the moon, rolled up in one and this entire time I was just looking for myself.

My problem with the song was that I don’t ascribe to the idea that one needs another person in order to be complete, but now, I’m realizing that this entire realization was Hedwig’s journey to complete herself, as well. Wow, I’m a dummy.

While it is flawed, in other ways it really is such a beautiful queer movie with many reads, and idk, I was just thinking about that a bit.

Hedwig and th Angry Inch haben wir jetzt vor 9 Jahren ("Ich hatte Vorbehalte" sagt der Tobi, und danach: "Ungerechtfertigte") und dem ganzen Broadway-Neil-Patrick-Harris-und-Michael-C.-Hall-und-schließlich-sogar-noch-John-Cameron-Mitchell-Trubel sowie einer wohlgemeinten, aber Riverdaletypisch zu geschleckten Riverdale-Musical-Folge hier zuletzt angeschaut, wo sich auch eine schöne Zusammenfassung findet. Damals habe ich mir noch richtig Mühe gegeben. Man sollte das eigentlich öfter machen, es ist ein kleines, feines, und beherzt versponnenes Filmchen. Ich berufe mich fürderhin auf "Ungerechtfertigte".
