Hanging with Stephen Gallagher

Stephen Gallagher has written novels (LOVE Kingdom of Bones, Chimera, Rain) and television scripts (for Doctor Who — for Rosemary & Thyme, Eleventh Hour, BBC series Murder Rooms, etc.) I’ve known Steve for ages, and in addition to being a brilliant writer, he’s an extremely generous person with a keen wit and wonderful sense of humor. He also makes a good guide round Leeds, where we spent today. Tried to stop at the Book Barge (going to pick up a book by @neil-gaiman to pose with) but it was closed. Sorry Neil! Also went to the art gallery … and discovered we have similar taste in pens.

Today in the MCU, this morning, Peter almost killed the Green Goblin and his variant saved him from doing so. Norman was cured, the world almost broke down due to the multiverse. Then Peter had to make the hardest decision; For the whole world to forget who Spider-Man is.

I remember that in the cafeteria, they start attacking Peter, and Stephen arrives through a portal. Everything they did to Peter might have been recorded, and Ned and Flash become hated by everyone.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Watching No Way Home with my family (it's their first time)

part 1

Context time! So... for the past week, we've been watching a Spider-Man movie each night. We are finally at No Way Home and because my family has never seen any Marvel movies (aside from Spider-Man) I thought I'd share what they say that I find funny.

PS. They don't really know about my Doctor Strange obsession (except my brother who is evil)

(Matt Murdock appears)

Me- He's blind

Brother- yeah I can tell by the cane

Mom- is he like a super hero?

Me- yeah, he's Daredevil. He lost his sight but he has like a radar sense

Dad- don't all blind people have that?

Me- no? Not really.

(Wong shows up)

Brother- "oh it's Doctor- (Wong turns around) who is this?"

Me- "he's the Sorcerer Supreme"

Mom- "the what?"

Me- *sighs* "he's in charge of the magic in the universe"

(Dr strange comes in)

Brother - "Doctor strange?! Is that Dr strange like your doctor strange? Like your crush? OoOo" 

Me- *blushing and sweating intensely *

Dad- "isn't that the same actor that you liked in Star Trek?"

Mom- "Aww you have a crush?"

Brother- "he's the British guy with the silly name!"

Me- *shrinks under the blanket and wants to die

Mom- "Why does he (Dr strange) want to kill everybody?" 

Me- *Goes into long speech about how he is misunderstood and used to be a doctor but now knows he can't save everyone 

Mom- *resumes movie* (part about multiverse sacrifice) "I mean, Strange does have a point" 

Me- *excited about getting a strange-is-misunderstood recruit*

Mom- Does his cape have a mind of its own?

Me- it's a cloak and yes

Mom- aww it's like a dog

Mom- (about mirror dimension) "I'm dizzy!! I'm going to have to close my eyes" 

Me- "his movie is even worse XD" 

Dad- this would be cool in 3d

Mom- doc ock aged well *blushes* (my dad agreed XD)

Mom- (about Stephen) "he's funny!!"

Me- yeah :)

Dad- I'm glad Peter got more mature 

Me- I mean, he was traumatized 

Dad- trauma will do that XD

Maeve Fly | C.J. Leede: American Psycho, if Patrick Bateman worked at a Disney-adjacent place. I also had the pleasure of reading American Rapture as an ARC and holy shit it's good.

The Long Walk | Stephen King: 100 boys compete in a walking competition and the winner gets anything they want. But that's too easy, if you walk too slow or take too long a break, you buy your ticket.

Hypnagogia | Michael F. Simpson: This one doesn't have a traditional plot but is a nasty exploration of the self, identity, and the body.

The Reformatory | Tananarive Due: Horror based in fact on the 'schools' where Black boys were sent during Jim Crowe times. Ghosts abound, but even death doesn't let you escape.

The Indian Lake Trilogy | Stephen Graham Jones: An absolute love letter to slasher movies of the 80s/90s. Jade is an amazing final girl.

The Ruins | Scott Smith: Don't bother with the movie, it doesn't capture how vile and fun the slasher turns out.
