"Before 'The Day of the Jackal,' Eddie Redmayne Was a Haunted Soldier in This Dark WWI Miniseries".
By Muhammad Ali Bandial, for Collider, January 17, 2025. 📸 by BBC
(Excerpts)
"Birdsong is undoubtedly a vehicle for Redmayne to show his range and skills, and he delivers on both accounts. Just as he showed us in The Day of the Jackal, Redmayne mesmerizes with his portrayals of two very different characters within the same person. A good actor can play many shades depending on the character. It's the truly great ones that can embody several different shades within a single character. Redmayne switches from cold and aloof to warm and expressive within the same scene on the battlefield".
"As the taciturn and stoic soldier, Wraysford (Redmayne) is hard to read as he keeps his emotions in check. While he appears cold and distant from the outside, the real Stephen, the one who's still grieving over his lost love, does come to the surface from time to time, especially during moments of danger, such as when he's holding on to a fallen soldier, asking him to think of his sweetheart as he bleeds to death. We get the feeling that, deep down, he's still the same sensitive, loving person. It's Redmayne's eyes that betray the hurt lurking just behind the facade. Perhaps he's been hurt by making himself vulnerable before, a mistake that he tries to avoid by keeping the men at a distance and avoiding emotions. On the surface, the two versions of Stephen are basically different characters, but how Redmayne brings about the steely resolve in the younger version and the softer side in the war-weary older version is praiseworthy".
"As a grand romance set against a sweeping backdrop of catastrophe, Birdsong is a must-watch as he perfectly slips into the skin of Stephen Wraysford. Though he doesn't show us the full measure of his shape-shifting Jackal personality, there's enough in this performance to resonate with viewers, especially those looking to see more of his range through these complex, detailed characters. While we eagerly await his next turn in The Day of the Jackal, Birdsong serves as a stunning reminder of his ability to captivate and move us, no matter the role.
Birdsong is available to rent on Amazon Prime in the U.S.".

Saturday evening (12.5 hours total stitching) to Sunday evening (15.5 total stitching).
Isabelle and Stephen are starting to look like real people!
Only the sky left to go - which is only seven shades of blue and approx 1,100 stitches. Practically nothing!

Oh how Stephen wraysford pitied other men for what they considered beauty as they had never seen Isabelle, oh how he pitied other women for how they would never be able to reach the level of Isabelle's aesthetic

Ben Barnes with his ‘Birdsong’ outfit  (London, 2010).
Recalling the first time he met author Sebastian Faulks:
"He looked at me a bit confused, and said it's nice to finally meet. I asked him what he meant and he said 'You look exactly how I imagined Stephen when I wrote it 15 years ago'. He was obviously a bit weirded out by it."

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Birdsong (BBC 2012) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Michael Weir/Stephen Wraysford Characters: Michael Weir, Stephen Wraysford Additional Tags: World War One, Anal Sex, Drinking, the frontlines, Pining Summary:
The next few moments flew by quicker than Weir would’ve liked. He wanted to undress Stephen slowly, kiss every freckle on his pale skin. He wanted to lay Stephen down on a soft bed and cherish him, show him how much he cared. But, they were in a war - - in a dugout which wall’s trembled with the enemy fire nearly nonstop.
They would have to steal this moment in time and make the best of it.

A/N: Requested by @jackdawsonsgrl and @dasha-tardis (who just wanted anything Stephen related lol ❤️) I hope you both like. A simple read of Stephen giving reader the eyes while she undresses. Nice. Also, I lied. Apparently I had time now to update lol

MOOD MUSIC: There’s a ghost by Fleurie
***
Humming flowed through the halls of your shared home, gaining Stephen’s attention and whisking him away to find its source. He was aware of it already, but the beauty was in the journey there. To find that reward at the end of the song, and see you sitting and going through your nightly routine he had come to treasure. Call it strange, but he adored knowing there was another presence with him, at ease and secure in itself. It was a part of him he had been missing for so long and finding it again after returning home...it was a kindness he would never take for granted.
“Y/N...” Stephen whispered, knowing his voice had gone unnoticed through the pleasant hums of your personal lullaby. It only caused him to smile, that faint joy in watching you sat upon the bed, fingers bundling your dress up and revealing your legs beneath. They were covered to mid thigh, a soft cotton stocking upon each that shielded him from your bare skin. He certainly wasn’t opposed to a more natural version of your frame, but he did find the stockings a rather agreeable choice as well.
You breathed a weak sigh, eyes closing momentarily while you worked on the tops of your stockings. Overtime you could feel the pressure of them on you, so it was a wonderful relief the moment you began to hook your fingers under the tops and slip them down, careful not to snag them. To you, it was a regular habit. The end of day signaling that there was no need to remain in such a polished appearance. However, unbeknownst to you, there were others who read more into the simple action.
Stephen moved towards the doorway, leaning against the frame and smiling warmly at the view. He could say any man would adore being privy to such matters in regards to their wives, but for him it was more than a chance to admire the result of your undress. To him, the entire process was a breathtaking show. Down to the very detail of you rhythmically slipping the stocking down, finger curved underneath the fabric and palm brushing across your thigh. The movement earned his gaze, his breathing becoming torturously labored. He was already acquainted with the feel of your skin beneath his fingertips, but the gesture only caused him to want to know it more. To explore further as if he hadn’t already mapped every inch of you in his mind. But, that could wait, he decided. Observing you pull it off and neatly lay it to one side of the bed was a little more entertaining to him at the moment. At least, he had believed that to be true.
It seemed tonight had other plans in mind for you both, because he once again found his thoughts trailing to intimate territories. Each one sweeter than the last while he graced his eyes with you working on the next one. Your fingers deftly went under the fabric again, your humming coming to a stop as you concentrated on slipping the stocking down. Stephen took his chance then, pushing off the doorframe and letting you know his presence.
“Let me.” He offered, kneeling in front of your surprised, yet lively, gaze.
“And just how long have you been standing there?” You rested your hands to the bed, leaning back slightly as you extended your leg for Stephen to work on. Immediately, he gripped the top of it, never breaking your stare during the process. His fingertips were warm to the touch, far warmer than yours that’s for sure. You almost wished you had requested he do this earlier.
“Long enough.” He bent forward, kissing just above your knee and enjoying the soft giggle you released. He took his time rolling the stocking down, each inch of skin he revealed being pampered by another embrace of his lips.
***
Because, giving you both a full smut would be spoiling you. ❤️
