Drop everything, new John & Paul photo from 1974 just dropped!
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, May Pang and Harry Nilsson in LA, 29th March 1974. Photo taken by Mal Evans.
For Mal, the sunny afternoon of March 29 would bring pure magic in contrast with the previous evening’s lackluster proceedings. The McCartney clan showed up [at the Santa Monica beach house] out of the blue, this time with daughters Heather, Mary, and Stella in tow, and Mal was thrilled at the prospect of seeing John and Paul together again—twice in the span of two days, no less. And he was by no means disappointed, observing the two old friends reclining on the patio together and, later, walking along the beach, with May, Linda, and the McCartney brood trailing along behind them. “Nice to see him and John together,” Mal scribbled in his diary later that month.
At one point that afternoon, Evans reached for his camera and snapped a photo of the two old friends lounging at the beach house — flanked by their partners, Linda and May Pang, and Harry Nilsson. May would also take some Polaroids of the meeting at some point this day, but there's a very real possibility that Evans' picture is the last photo ever taken of the 20th Century's greatest songwriting duo. (It will be included in the upcoming collection of Evans' diaries and archives, slated for publication in 2024.)

Broadway Divas: Obscure Sondheim
To highlight how vast and varied Sondheim's roles and shows are, these five Divas have a singular Sondheim credit to their repertoire that are a little more obscure than most. So obscure that my dream of finding pictures to dazzle you all with was quickly shattered.
Bebe Neuwirth as Cinderella's Stepsister, Florinda, in a reading of Into the Woods for a 1994 movie that never came to fruition. This reading took place at director Penny Marshall's house and had a truly breathtaking cast: Robin Williams (The Baker), Goldie Hawn (The Baker's Wife), Steve Martin (The Wolf), Danny DeVito (The Giant), Carrie Fisher (Lucinda), and fucking CHER as The Witch. Bebe Neuwirth and Carrie Fisher as catty sisters tormenting Cinderella and getting their eyes pecked out. And then Cher trying to feed them to Danny DeVito. We were robbed of a masterpiece.
Judith Light as Joanne in a Reprise! presentation of Company at UCLA's Freud Playhouse. Though not known for her singing abilities, Judith was nevertheless part of an all-star cast for this two-week run in 2004. The only review I could find was...not favorable. It's been twenty years, and I, for one, think Judith Light deserves her chance at redemption.
Linda Emond as Mary in Merrily We Roll Along, 1988. The Seattle-based ACT company produced Sondheim's biggest flop musical through the month of May in 1988. Linda, then in her late twenties, played the female lead in a rare musical role for her. And I do have a picture thanks to ACT's fantastic archival system.
Pictured: Linda Emond (Mary) center, surrounded by Joseph Dellger (Franklin Shepherd) and Joseph McNally (Charley). And no, I cannot tell which man is which...
4. Susan Blackwell as The Giant in a 2019 one-night-only staged concert of Into the Woods. If you thought the recent Broadway revival was bare-bones, it had nothing on this staged concert at the Town Hall in NYC. There is one singular photo that includes Susan, and without knowing she was meant to be there, you'd never be able to identify her.
Pictured (L to R):
5. Paula Leggett Chase as Stella Deems in Follies, a one-night-only special event in Tangier, Morocco featuring a transcontinental cast of Divas. Since 2013 (excluding pandemic years), Rob Ashford has staged fundraising productions of shows such as A Little Night Music, The Crucible, and Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Confusingly, though Paula sang Stella Deems' song "Who's That Woman," she was credited in the program as Emily Whitman (presumably they just combined the roles for this production and gave them to the dancer in the cast?)
Pictured (L to R): The late Haydn Gwynn (Phyllis Rogers Stone, my beloved), Marisa Berenson (Solange LaFitte), Harolyn Blackwell (Heidi Schiller), Jenna Russel (Sally Durant Plummer), Paula Leggett Chase (Emily Whitman), Harriet Harris (Hattie Walker).

Starmania 1979
The French singer, author and composer Michel Berger one day heard about a surprising news item . Patricia Campbell Hearst, the daughter of a billionaire, kidnapped by terrorists ended up joining their movement out of love for one of her kidnappers !
This true story will fascinate him, to the point of starting an album inspired by this story :
This will be the “Angelina Dumas” project .
Ultimately the album never saw the light of day and only one song that remained of Berger's work remained that he recorded as a duet with his wife France Gall :
youtube
Frustrated by what he considers to be a failure, Michel will not let go of what he thinks (rightly) is a good artistic vein
thanks to his wife who will make him meet the Canadian singer Diane Dufresne, Michel will work with his lyricist Luc Plamondon with whom he created the most famous rock opera in France :
The story takes place in an undated future (despite a now outdated reference to the year 2000 and the 80s) Humans now live in underground galleries redeveloped into a huge city called Monopolis. The only mirage of happiness for ordinary citizens is the number 1 television show "Starmania" where everyone can become a star for one night .
We simultaneously follow the lives and actions of several characters :
Johnny Rockfort : A young anarchist leader of the terrorist group " les étoiles noires " ( the black stars )
Sadia : A transvestite student co-creator of " les étoiles noires "
Marie Jeanne : The depressed waitress who works at the " Underground café "
Ziggy : A mythomaniac and ambitious homosexual record store owner
Cristal : The host of Starmania
Stella Spotlight : A sex symbol on the decline
Zéro Janvier : An extremist politician running for became president
Gourou Marabout : An extremist politician also competing in the presidential election
Roger-Roger : the TV presenter
Brilliantly the duo Berger / Plamondon went out of their way to organize the broadcast of a special television program in 1978 in order to present the songs to as many people as possible :
youtube
The show was performed for a short month for 33 performances at the Palais des Congrès , but it is considered one of the greatest French musicals
DISTRIBUTION :
Daniel Balavoine : Johnny Rockfort
France Gall : Cristal
Fabienne Thibeault : Marie-Jeanne
Étienne Chicot : Zéro Janvier
Diane Dufresne : Stella Spotlight
Grégory Ken : Ziggy
Nanette Workman : Sadia
Roddy Julienne : le Gourou
René Joly : Roger-Roger
Due to his short presence on stage, the show did not have the right to a complete recording (it is today considered a highly sought after lost media) but fortunately the audio of the show has available in its entirety !
To get an idea of the visual identity of the show I had to dig into the TV archives :
youtube
youtube
youtube
The repetitions :
youtube
Full live audio of the show :
Single :
Monopolis / Quand on arrive en ville / Le blues du business man / La complainte de la serveuse automate / Ziggy / Le monde est stone
But the most memorable song is " SOS d'un terrien en détresse "
A song renowned for its difficulty and which launched the career of Daniel Balavoine then, years later, that of Star Academy 2004 winner Grégory Lemarchal :
youtube
ANECDOTES :
The original album contains two songs missing from the final show :
Petite Musique terrienne Part 2
L'air de l'extraterrestre
This extraterrestrial is a deleted character who only appeared physically in two production ( Francis Martin in 1980 and Marc Gabriel in 1986 , in this last version we discovered that Roger-Roger was in reality an alien ) the song, or rather its theme, will be recycled in several subsequent versions .
The show also contains several unreleased and missing songs from the album that will never be reused !!
La serveuse et les clients
Jingle de Stella
Sex shops , cinéma porno
Les parents de Cristal
Le tango de l'amour et de la mort
...
Claude Dubois (the original voice of Zéro Janvier) is the only one of the singers present on the album who did not reprise the role on stage, unfortunately it was because of his drug addiction, he took his revenge in 1989 when he replaced Richard Groulx on stage ( thanks to miss-starmania for the archive picture and additional information )
...
Michel Berger abandons his role of Grand Gourou to Roddy Julienne without any explanation ?!
...
In this version, in addition to randomly attacking wealthy people in the street, scratching their cars and raping girls in parking lots, les étoiles noires of 79 are a bit more extreme than in the other versions … Roger Roger specifies that the terrorists deliberately disconnected the oxygen ventilation of an entire neighborhood, killing all the residents ! This free murder will be deleted from other versions
...
The name Johnnie Rockfort (a complicated pun to translate which can mean "strong rock'n'roll " or just the cheese of the same name ? ) is perhaps not a coincidence , the producer of the show Roland Hubert, not being convinced by Balavoine, completely unknown at the time, he fought (in vain) with Berger so that the role was offered to the rocker Johnny Halliday
...
According to the memories of France Gall, during one of the performances a disgruntled spectator had fun whistling throughout the show exhausting Daniel Balavoine who patiently waited for the curtain call to jump into the audience to beat him up while he was still wearing his bulky costume ( the one below )
...
France Gall speaks with emotion about the show :
youtube
For more Starmania or to discover other French musicals I invite you to follow the path of my main masterlist to learn more about French musicals and their stories :

Alfea overview
The Alfea College for Fairies is a girls' boarding school in Magix for Fairies and the oldest (established 9000 years bef the start of the story) and most prestigious educational institution for fairies.
The education in Alfea lasts 3 years, one for each Fairy Form in the journey of an aspiring full-fledged fairy.
The Alfea students are mostly in training ages 16-18 (unless they have been held back a grade like Stella, so in her case, 17). Fairies here learn how to control their power, fight evil, learn new spells as well as learn how to be their realms' queens and guardian fairies. In this way, alphea is a little like a boarding school for the elites.
(i might draw a whole map for alfea in the future)
In the Past
The Alfea Champions were an ancient trio of legendary fairies who were believed to be the most powerful fairies in all of Alphea History. Their feats have been known to be passed down through generations, immortalised in statues that stand in the Alphea Archives, and had been recorded in Legendarium. Ress of the Flame, Chevonne of the Water and Farcelia of the Wind. According to Daphne, they are the strongest fairies in Alphea history. However, if other fairies are bonded with pixies, they could overpower the Champions of Alfea as they refused the bondings of the pixies as they were very prideful.
When Mavilla was headmistress of Alfea, owning and exhibiting the strengths of one's Fairy Animal was considered a vital part of a fairy education. Everything taught was a reflection of the contents of the Tome of Nature. Eventually, Mavilla realised that was wrong and the curriculum prohibited the animals from living freely.
Alfea also used to have a crest which was a curved golden "A" on a purple and blue flower with a golden outline at the top of the school gates, just above Alfea's gate. The "A" of the crest is also seen on what used to be the school's uniform, consisting of a burgundy long-sleeved and knee-length dress and mary janes. The neck part of the dress has white lace and a dark burgundy loop.
At another point in time, Eldora was the keeper of the Alfea Greenhouse and taught floral magic.
School years
First Year
Freshmen fairies learn how to master their own source of power, as well as their first fairy form, and learn many basic spells they can use in their daily life as well as spells cast spontaneously and on instinct. metamorphosis, Potionology and training exercises are part of the curriculum. Fairies also learn how to explore diverse environments in the Simulation Room.
Second Year
In their cognitive analysis class, fairies learn technical incantations, and spells requiring accurate pronunciation. Other classes include magic invocation, magic self-defense, and applied convergence. They also have the goal of earning Charmix, a power-up that will temporarily boost their magic.
Third Year
Additional classes include History of Magic, and Cosmomagic. After spring break, fairies are tasked with their final exam, and earning Enchantix is more like an extra credit thing, the Final Fairy Form in a fairy's formal educational journey to become a full-fledged fairy. Those who achieve Enchantix will participate in training exercises to hone their abilities.
Graduation
After earning Enchantix, the basic fairy education is completed and they will graduate with honours and receive the titles of Guardian Fairies of their respective homeworlds on the Day of the Gift. Without Enchantix, the girls still graduate, but they don't become guardian fairies. In this case, they return to their home world and can decide if they want to work towards being a guardian fairy by being an apprentice to one until they earn their Enchantix, or they can do something else.
Winx After Graduation
the Winx, taught for a short period of time, before choosing to take their masters here in various subjects in addition to being substitute teachers from time to time.
Architecture, rooms, security
outside
The Alfea Natural Park, which is a refuge for Fairy Animals, is found in the forest. (opens in season 7) It is unknown if these parts of the forest belong to the school or not, but they are also used by the scool for classes and tests.
There is a bus stop where students, guests, and staff members can take buses from and to Magix City and to other places in Magix.
The non-forested area around the castle is used by the students to spend their time or for classes which can be used for tests, exams, and training.
Protective barriers meant to keep non-magical creatures, non-fairies, and bad weather out are seen many times in the series. Their power source is magic.
The School Gates are the only access to the school compound. They consist of a large pink archway with two wing-like doors that move to open or close the gates. By the time the Winx had joined Alfea, the crest had been removed and replaced with an orb of the same colour as the school walls
Its campus is a large castle with pink walls and blue roofs built around a courtyard.
Ground Floor
The Classrooms are found on the ground floor around the central courtyard, including, Potions Laboratory. The School Kitchen, where Chef Sfoglia works, Students may also be assigned to do the cooking as chores or as punishment. The Entrance Hall is a large room found opposite the School Gates, and it is accessed by a set of stairs. The Entrance hall opens into corridors through which the classrooms can be accessed and it has a stairway from which the upper parts of the school can be accessed. The School Hall is a large room found on the ground floor. It has a large dome of glass as its outer wall and there are long tables where the students have their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It has a special tier for staff members. Parties and balls are often held there and during such occasions, the tables are removed to make a place for the festivities. It is found below the Headmistress' Office and behind the Entrance Hall. The School Hospital is where students are treated in case of health problems and injuries. It is composed of an office and a resting room with many beds. It is managed by Nurse Ofelia and her assistant.
other rooms include: The School Museum, The Greenhouse. The Music Cafe, Alfea Gym and dance studio, the library (It has its own magical research system, the Research Lectern. Miss Barbatea is the Libraria), and the Hall of Enchantments a secret part of Alfea that only the staff of Alfea can access. It contains: the hall of infamy, where the portraits of all the enemies of the Magic Dimension can be found, the entire history of the magical universe and the heart of alphea.
There is also an Aviary in Alfea that can be accessed by magical means since it is larger than the school building. It is similar to a giant open-air garden where giant flowers and giant birds, such as the Giant Eagles, can be found. Although only magic can open the aviary, the people inside it cannot use magic spells.
There are two towers in Alfea, both have viewing areas.
The West Tower is where the Magic Archive of Alfea is found. Precious and rare books about many things can be found there and the school's Codex used to be kept there. A Pixie, named Concorda, is the keeper of the Secret Archives. (contains many books and scrolls written by ancient and powerful sorcerers)
The east tower contains the hall of memories. the hall of memories (Fairies can use their powers to relive the past and reveal Time's secrets), formerly known as the Hall of Fairy Animals
Second Floor
The student Dormitories (enchanted to be bigger on the inside). The Staff Quarters. There are balconies adjoined to the student dormitories and the staff quarters.
The Headmistress's Office is where the Headmistress of Alfea does the formal work of the school and where she attends official visitors. the teacher's offices are here too.
The Simulation Room is where virtual simulations take place. It can also be used to teleport people to other locations. Professor Palladium is the one who is in charge of the Simulation Chamber.
The School Amphitheater is where the students sometimes attend the school assembly and where general meetings are often held, especially in crisis times. Students may also take part in activities such as dance practice and rehearsing there. There is a table with chairs around it where staff members sit. Exams may also be held there.
Others
The Central Courtyard is a large open space at the centre of the school, which is built around the school. It contains:
Benches where students can sit and spend their free time.
A Well, with underground tunnels that connects Alfea to the other magical schools and which were used in ancient times if the schools were attacked. it is also revealed that the well now contains various rooms and obstacles to go through in order to obtain the Star of Teamwork.
A Public Square where functions such as the beginning of the year and graduation ceremonies are done. It also serves as a landing space for Red Fountain ships.

Victorian keepsake: Skiff family hair album, ca. 1845
youtube
In this video, Manuscripts and Archives Librarian Catherine Grandgeorge combs through a family hair book from the Newberry's Midwest Manuscript collections. View the Skiff family hair album at Newberry Digital Collections
About Victorian hairwork
"As strange as it might seem today, Victorians often used human hair from friends and family to create wreaths and jewelry, commonly referred to as ‘hairwork.’ Victorian hair albums are a rarer phenomenon than other types of hairwork and are also a culturally different phenomenon. Hair wreaths and hair jewelry were often created as an act of mourning and generally the hair was removed from the deceased prior to burial. The jewelry served as a way to keep your loved one near you as you went on with your daily life, and was also a socially acceptable fashion accessory during the official mourning period. Hair wreaths were another mourning artifact and were fashioned in the shape of a horseshoe with the open end upwards to signify ascent into heaven.”
Stella Skiff Jannotta scrapbooks, 1801-1996
"Hair albums, on the other hand, were often assembled using locks of hair from living friends and family and more closely relate to the concept of an album amicorum or friendship album. Friends exchanged locks of hair as a token of affection or sometimes remembrance if a friend was moving far away and it was unlikely that they would ever see each other again. The locks of hair were styled according to the abilities of the album creator, ranging from simple bunches tied together with string or ribbon to elaborate braided and looped creations. Asking one’s friends for a lock of hair seems almost unimaginable now, but in a time before the invention of photography, a piece of hair was the only tangible way to remember someone."
-- "Hair Today and (Not) Gone Tomorrow: The Conservation of a 19th-Century Hair Album," by Mary H. French
About Stella Skiff Jannotta
An American suffragist, eugenicist, genealogist, writer, and member of the founding family of Jewel Tea Company, Stella Skiff was born on October 29, 1867, in Newton, Iowa. After establishing a successful dry goods business in Newton, the Skiff family moved to Chicago in 1889. Stella studied music at the Chicago Conservatory with Italian maestro Alfredo Antonio Jannotta, an Italian composer, conductor, and voice instructor, and was considered a promising lyric soprano. Stella and Alfredo were married in 1893 and took residence at the Plaza Hotel in downtown Chicago before settling in Oak Park.
In the early 1900s Stella became active in the women's suffrage movement and in rationalist religious organizations. She joined the Chicago Political Equality League (CPEL), the precursor to the Chicago League of Women Voters, and wrote several essays on eugenics and the related issues of birth control, overpopulation, prostitution, sex education, and spouse-choosing. Stella also spent a considerable amount of time researching her family history. Stella died in 1954. More information: Stella Skiff Jannotta scrapbooks collection guide

Musa Moodboard
Goth/Emo tm
She is very closed off towards the start of the rewrite and it takes her a while to open up and trust the girls, especially since she shows her love towards actions more than words
She fell for Riven very slowly and was actually low-key terrified of that since she is so used to being hurt by the people she’s closest to
Whilst the entire group is very Ride or Die, Musa is the most likely to throw hands in a split second if anyone insults anyone in the squad
She has a lot of nightmares, especially after s3, Tecna, Stella, Riven and Helia are the only ones that can calm her down when they get bad
Tecna is her best friend, Riven is her soulmate and Helia is her platonic soulmate
No Time to Die by Billie Eilish, Like a God by Lia Marie Johnson and Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day are her songs

Starmania 1986
This version of Starmania was not first performed in a theater or a dedicated concert hall , but at the Lanaudière Festival in Canada ( Before finally moving in 1987 to the Maisonneuve Theater in Montreal for practical and budgetary reasons )
DISTRIBUTION :
Norman Groulx : Johnny Rockfort
Anne Bisson : Cristal
Marie Carmen : Marie-Jeanne
Richard Groulx : Zéro Janvier
Marie Denise Pelletier : Stella Spotlight
Jean Leloup : Ziggy
Maude Grenier : Sadia
Marc Gabriel : Roger-Roger
The show was not well received by the public
The orchestration of the songs strangely speeds up, a stage completely empty of scenery and costumes considered ugly and too minimalist; This version is considered one of the worst of all attempts to adapt Starmania .
There is no recording of the show but there is an album :
And the usual archive videos :

This version is only a cover of that of 1980 with the only new addition the adding the song "Un enfant de la pollution"

Linda McCartney: a life through the lens
As a collection of Linda Eastman's best photographs - as chosen by her family - goes on display in a London gallery, her daughter Mary McCartney tells Roya Nikkhah that her mother's motto was always "Keep it simple"
By Roya Nikkhah and Royanikkhah
04 June 2011 • 9:00pm
Mary McCartney, who has curated an exhibition of her mother's photographic work: Photographs by Linda McCartney
In May 1968, Linda Eastman became the first female photographer to feature on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine with a portrait of Eric Clapton. Less than a year later, she married one of the most famous men in the world to become Linda McCartney, and was thereafter known primarily as a Beatle’s wife.
“No one knew I was a photographer,” Linda once said. “When I married Paul, to [the fans] I was an American divorcee.”
McCartney died of breast cancer in 1998 aged 56, but her family are determined to ensure that her accomplishments as a photographer live on. For the last year, McCartney and his daughters Mary, a photographer, and Stella, a fashion designer, have sifted through Linda’s archive of more than 200,000 images, to collate Linda McCartney: A Life In Photographs, a book of some of her best work, accompanied by limited-edition prints.
The retrospective encapsulates her work as a leading music photographer, with iconic images of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, the Rolling Stones and, of course, The Beatles. But while it covers studio sessions with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, it is also an intimate family album, with touching and many previously unseen pictures of the McCartneys raising their young children – Heather, Mary, Stella and James – at their farm in Scotland, on holiday in the Caribbean and at home in London.
Mary, who talks openly of her mother’s huge influence on her own career, is wandering around the cavernous white space of the Phillips de Pury gallery in London, where a selection of the prints are being hung, among them Linda’s famous photograph of a baby Mary peeking out from inside her father’s sheepskin jacket, which later illustrated the cover of his first solo album, McCartney, in 1970. “It looks so cosy, doesn’t it?” says Mary. “That’s how they’d go riding together – zip me in there and go for a little horse ride.”
Mary speaks movingly of her regret that her mother’s work wasn’t more widely recognised, so often overshadowed by the McCartney name. “She didn’t self-promote or do lots of interviews, she never blew her own trumpet, and so she was often pigeonholed as a celebrity who dabbled in photography, which isn’t how it was at all.
“People didn’t realise that it was through her photography career that Mum and Dad met and that she was a photographer way before she had a family with Dad. But she wasn’t that bothered about what other people thought about her, it’s more probably us, her kids, who got irritated.”
Linda’s break came in 1967, when she was the only photographer allowed on to a boat on the Hudson River in New York where the Rolling Stones were performing. The candid photographs of the band at work and at play paved the way for commissions from Rolling Stone and other leading glossy magazines.
“People know quite a lot of her Sixties work, but Stella, Dad and I were interested in showing a broader spectrum, as well as those iconic images,” says Mary. When she got married, she stopped being a jobbing photographer doing all the bands in New York. When she moved to London, she carried on with a very similar style and eye, but her subject changed. She was still photographing the people around her, which were her family and friends.”
A previously unseen photograph of Twiggy shows the young model relaxing off-duty during a visit to Linda in London shortly after Mary was born in 1969. Another shows her young brother, larking around with McCartney in a bubble bath in 1983. “This one really shows her style,” says Mary. “Mum’s motto was always 'keep it simple’ which I stick to. She would never pose us all.
“With Dad and James in the bubble bath, she would just walk by and have thought visually that was quite strong and have taken the picture. She’d always have the camera on her so these are all like pictures she’d take as she was wandering through life.”
Mary moves towards a black-and-white picture taken at their farm in Scotland in 1982, showing Paul standing on a fence in his dressing gown, while Stella crouches on the ground and a young James, in his pyjamas, leaps off the family Land Rover. “This one is genius, but she won’t have set it up – it will have just been everybody there. That fence was really wobbly and we used to have a competition to see who could walk the longest along it before you fell off. It wasn’t very stable. I never, ever got all the way along.”
Mary remembers watching her mother at work; her subjects would barely register they were being captured on film. “She would have the camera with her but wouldn’t hold it up in your face for a long time, so she wouldn’t be clicking all around you – she’d chat with you, take a snap, put the camera down, so you didn’t have time to start posing and feeling self-conscious. She never intimidated people.”
Linda herself spoke of always trying to penetrate beneath the “veneer” of celebrity subjects like Jim Morrison, lead singer with The Doors, and her friend Jimi Hendrix. “People could confide in her, because she wasn’t a gossip,” says Mary. “Hendrix in particular became a bit disenchanted [with photographers] because they always wanted him to 'perform’ – be all rock and roll – but she was friends with him because she loved his playing, so he didn’t need to be like that with her.”
I wonder if Linda ever regretted relinquishing her successful career in New York after marrying Paul? “Talking to Mum, she had become a bit disenchanted with the music industry by that time,” says Mary. “She found that as the years went on, there were more lawyers and PRs around the record companies, who were more and obstructive.
“She was also being asked to get much more sensationalist pictures, which she wasn’t interested in doing. She told me people would try and get her to go to Andy Warhol’s Factory and take pictures of people shooting up, which wasn’t her style. It was enough to make her feel uncomfortable. She needed to be enjoying it to stay stimulated, so I think she’d got to a point where she’d done her bit.”
One of Mary’s favourite works in the gallery is Whisky and Milk, Scotland 1978, a black-and-white shot of an empty whisky bottle and a milk bottle side by side on the kitchen table. “I love that and it’s one of Stella’s favourites, too. It shows her quirky side and her sense of humour. She always thought that was quite entertaining, you know, the contrast of both bottles equally enjoyed by different age groups.
“This is one of my favourites too,” she says, moving over to Paul’s Feet, where McCartney grips a glass with his feet, toe-nails varnished in rainbow colours. “It kind of says a lot about Mum and Dad.”
Mary published From Where I Stand last year, a retrospective book accompanying an exhibition of her own work. While editing the book and show, she noted the similarity between some of her pictures and her mother’s. “I looked at some shots and thought, 'that was a picture Mum could have taken,’ but the difference between us is that she wouldn’t care about missing a shot, whereas if I see something and I haven’t got a camera, I can get quite stressed.
“She was very chilled, she’d say: 'It’s a soul camera moment’. Now, if I get annoyed that I’ve missed a shot, I try and think, 'Don’t worry, it’s on the soul camera’. I say it and don’t really mean it, whereas Mum could really let it go. She had everything captured in her soul camera.”
* Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs is at Phillips de Pury (Howick Place, London SW1, www.phillipsdepury.com) from June 7 to June 16. The book is published by TASCHEN and available for £44.99 at www.taschen.com
