Apparently there is new documentary on Netflix which is uncritically presenting wild, anti-academic theories about prehistorical peoples and societies in an attempt to prove the existence of Atlantis and explain how "simple" nomadic people could've possibly built large monuments and develop agriculture (Not aliens this time, now the theory is that there was an ancient industrialized civilization that passed on it's knowledge before going extinct during the last ice age, which there is inexplicably 0 trace of and that "archaeologists refuse to investigate" etc etc) The show even goes so far as to give a platform to an author with Extremely Questionable, Nazi-adjacent ideas about the origins of humanity??? (Idk that they platform these ideas of his or just bring him on to talk about atlantis specifically but uh...)
Anyway, while I don't think a significant number of people would actually fall for this (maybe I'm being optimistic) Here's a neat video debunking the whole series, and I recommend this channel to anyone with even a passive interest in pre-history and anthropology as he covers a lot of really interesting topics backed with proper research and evidence:

(this video is 2 hours long but most of his content is about 20 minutes in length!)

I've recently become SO obsessed with paleoanthropology and early humas it's not even funny
And it's all because of Stefan Milo's channel. How DARE he make such good quality videos with such recent evidence about such an interesting topic. How COULD he make me sympathetic about yhe fact that polynesians reached the americas
Oh what an incredible journey it must've been. To be the first to sail across the pacific and come back, centuries before the europeans
I REALLY want to buy a book on paleoanthropology, does anybody have any recommendations? Looking especially for book that talk about the more human sides and habits of early humans and hominids

Would be fun to have a very strict, very realistic ancient human (neolithic) survival videogame. No, you don't get to build furnaces or a city or an industry at the end like in every goddamn survival game. There's not even an inventory, you got two hands and a skin bag that can carry a couple stones at most (and only because I'm feeling merciful). No HP, you get lacerations, broken bones, hemorrages, disease, and there's practically no medicine (no 'medicinal' herbs either, at best some cleaning and some soothing). You don't build, you just survive. AGAIN, NO FUCKING BUILDINGS. YOU DON'T BUILD SHIT. YOU DON'T HAVE A MAGICAL INVENTORY. TWO HANDS. THAT'S FUCKING IT.
Perhaps the most fun part would be interacting with the rest of your tribe. Try to impress your fellow tribe girl by hunting a goddamn smilodon, do a cave painting for the next initiation ritual, or figure out what those neanderthals are up to.

watching Stefan Milo's video about the Rimrock Draw Rockshelter, Oregon archaeological site dated to 18 THOUSAND YEARS OLD. holy shit. the first professor I had the pleasure of working with and taking her prehistory course my first semester of college was a pretty conservative paleoindian archaeologist working in Russia and Alaska and was really skeptical of any sites dated before 13kya so like that's the number I've had in my head. but the dating of this site is so firmly before 15kya (under a layer of volcanic ash, doesn't get too much better than that) and yea holy shit. the 18kya date is a tad more shaky imo bc that date was taken from a camel tooth found above it, so superpostition but not actually a date from the man-made tool or its layer. but either way super fucking cool

Stefan Simić: Česlav Miloš i Janina
man ray . I posmatrao, kako i sam kaže, njeno lagano…

Milo woke with a start, nearly jumping to his feet at the bidding of the fae, but certainly as his brothers began to move. He stopped in the doorway again, much as he had before the shifter had made quick work of his neck. And before entering he looked back to assure that the detectives were well and truly leaving, along with all of the other party guests. The last thing they needed was for Stefan to wake and bite anyone in a fit of rage... no, that wouldn't do. Once he was certain of the path being clear, he joined the bulk of his siblings, helping to gather their maker off of the floor.
Natalia swam in that pool of inky blackness, pondering the last time she'd experienced this sort of stillness until it hit her. Death. That removal from oneself and the present--a step beyond sleeping, perhaps, but well and truly left in a vacuous void. And the cold. She was slipping away to such a degree where she was completely unaware of her physical body, although it luckily acted unconsciously as bidden by Magnus' efforts.
The warmth returned then, inch by inch as feeling returned to her limbs. Gentle caresses through her hair, the kiss to her skin like ice breaking over a fevered forehead, and the smell of the blood. Her eyes opened then, though she couldn't quite move much else, and she took in the adjustment of surroundings once more. Magnus as her gentle carer, and Isambard's armm against her lips--her fangs embedded in him. But she didn't fight it, not with the look in his eyes. That care, that devotion still tethering the two together. She brought her hand up tentatively to rest on his forearm--her injured wrist audibly shifting and pulsating as the blood and chanting righted its arrangement.
She became wary of taking too much, as well as the fact that her wounds were mended apart from that lingering tingling that she suspected came from Magnus' magic. So Natalia pulled her fangs from Isambard's offered arm, her one hand remaining there as the newly healed one came up to touch Magnus' cheek. "Thank you... truly," she all but whispered.
The blood was still spreading through her, reminding her body of its strength again. She gently touched her neck then, prodding the place where her attacker had torn away the flesh. But even under the blood she still felt there, the skin was as good as new. She smiled at that--the sort of marveled but disbelieving one a kid would have at the sight of presents under the Christmas tree. "Magnifico."
Jay continued to scrub at his face. "I can't...I just..." He wasn't really tracking all that well. And he knew he wasn't. Once the adrenaline had worn off, he was shaking. But he didn't know what he was shaking from. It wasn't fear. He didn't think anyway. But he should have been dead. That vampire should have killed him. And yet...here he was. "You knew him?" He demanded of his partner, suddenly remembering the way the vampire stopped when she'd stepped in front of him. "And that was really stupid!" He snapped. "What were you thinking? You could have gotten hurt too! What would have been the point in that?" They'd done this before. Cursed to ever repeat it. At her touch though, everything seemed to stop swirling. And it wasn't a strange thing to happen. It happened a lot really. He blinked too bright eyes back at the room they'd escaped from. The hurried voices sounding like scratchy whispers to him. He didn't want to leave. Not really. But didn't want to stay equally as much. Finally, he relented. "Yeah. Sure. Whatever."
Thomas, and Archer who had come later than the rest stood by helplessly. Thomas feeling ill and not just from having his neck snapped. Knowing full well this was his fault. All of it. Archer, who hadn't been accustomed to such things just stared in horror. Thomas grabbed him by the elbow, steering him away from the chaos and to help Mitchell and Sofia. Isambard could help Natalia, more than either of them could. And Magnus was there too. They'd have their hands full with Stefan. Especially when he woke.
Magnus caught David's eyes for a meaningful moment of thanks, before he turned back to Natalia who lay lifeless in his arms. He cared for the girl. Cared for most of the supernaturals in Chicago. He considered them to be his charges. To protect, to heal, to keep safe. And well he hadn't done a good job of that tonight. Curse his libido and all its glittery glory. And curse David too for being so damn distracting.
Isambard's immediate response was expected but not unappreciated. He took Isambard's extended arm, and producing a glittering knife in his hand, sliced up his arm with cool precision. The blood began to bubble up from the wound and he brought it to Natalia's parted lips. It took some manhandling to get her fangs to latch on. She'd need to feed to heal the rest of her wounds. He held Isambard there until he felt her fangs descend. "There now, poppet." He soothed. "Drink up, darling."
He gave Isambard a look before brushing his fingers through her hair as she drank. A cool blue light enveloped them. Magnus' power swirling around them. Moving in and out of their beings. It was a subtle exchange. Because Magnus ordered it so. He'd not bring them any discomfort. Anymore than they had already suffered. He pressed cool lips to her forehead, whispering a chant of healing against her skin. It would be up to her now. He'd done everything he could.

TW some violence/injury description but i promise im going somewhere w this lol
the neanderthal we now know as Shanidar 1— or Nandy, as his excavators nicknamed him— was a very strong person. Nandy was struck hard on the side of his face, fracturing his right orbit, probably impairing if not blinding his right eye. he suffered from profound hearing loss, too, as well as a withered right arm which was fractured in several places; and about a thousand more tiny things that would've made Nandy's life difficult in a way we can scarcely imagine. i've even heard him referred to as a contender for one of the most injured people ever discovered, archaeologically.
he healed. he survived his injuries. he lived to be 30-45~ years old; an achievement by the standards of the time which he could not reasonably have accomplished without the compassion of his family, his tribe. they helped him, they loved him, they cared for him. there is even evidence that his withered arm may have been deliberately amputated; meaning that they performed a gruesome, terrible prehistoric surgery on him in order to save his life.
Nandy was not fearless. im confident in asserting that Nandy knew fear more intimately than you or i. but Nandy lived, and loved, and was loved in return; and that's courage.
live, and love, and be loved in return. be courageous. your tribe is with you <3
hey can I ask , what is it like being an neanderthal. I don't mean it in the sense of past storys and all. But what's it like being on an open plain with your group? When the winds are wild and lose? What's it like when the howls grow dark. And they only let out a meek bark at you? What's it like being the strong one? Tuff and all due to your muscles? What's its like when you take the role of the leader , where you a son of the last or had to step up? Please, do tell me your storys fellow neanderthal. As a camera myself I'd like to also capture your moments. /pos
It’s very empowering, in all honesty, but… it’s pressuring at the same time. Having to be fearless, having to have courage to not disappoint those around me anymore. Ive taken this upon myself, and making people happy makes me feel much more connected with my kintype, but. It’s hard.
Sometimes, i want to be vulnerable again. I want to be able to be strong, while being vulnerable at the same time.
