“Reading is an act of friendly isolation. When we are reading, we make ourselves unapproachable in a tactful way. Perhaps that is exactly what has interested painters for so long in the portrayal of readers: showing people in a state of deepest intimacy not intended for outsiders. If the viewer were to approach the reader in real life, this condition would immediately be threatened. So painting allows us to see what we actually cannot see, or see only at the price of destroying it.” ― from Women Who Read Are Dangerous by Stefan Bollmann.

😊 Bildquelle: Pixabay #Bloggersonntag #starkefrauen #feministisch #feministischebücher #Buch #Bücher #bloggen #Blogger #bloggerlife #Buchblog #Buchbloggerin #missrosesbuecherwelt (hier: Dresden, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpasVqdrX-Q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Vittorio Matteo Corcos (1859-1933) - Sogni (Dreams)
Oil on canvas. Painted in 1896. 62.9 x 53.1 inches, 160 x 135 cm.
Part of the collection of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Rome.
Knowledge makes you interesting, taking and posting selfies doesn’t.
The painting appears on the cover and alongside around 60 other artworks of women reading in the book Women Who Read Are Dangerous. Compiled by Stefan Bollmann and published in the US by Abbeville Press, it’s available in the UK for £15.95. If inclined, try to buy it from an independent bookshop (they need our support). I got mine from Daunt Books in London.

Please Contextually Reference Your Subject Matter. What Art,design, cultural, historic references can you look at to gain insight?
My theme for the FMP is very revolved around women and the female body and how it is portrayed within society by men, and so I think it is going to be important for me to look at and research feminist works (writing and art) to contextualise my work and gain insight into the history of where my ideas are coming from. I think it could be a really useful and interesting starting point to conduct some of my own research and find out the relationships people I know have to the female body, but also how they view it, and things they view to be ‘wrong’ or grotesque’ about these bodies, and breaking down where these ideas came from. I think poetry is a heavy influence for my work, and because my work for the FMP is going to come from a very female point of view, I think it could be interesting to look into the history of women in literature and stories, but also the history of women who write. During the FMP there are some books I am planning to read. I am going to read the book “Women who Write are Dangerous” written by Stefan Bollmann. This book explored the history of how women have not always been considered people who should be writing and were often, and still sometimes, not given the same recognition and representation to male writers, and so this book explores feminist literature and the affect that these books and writings have on society and the world, and how we perceive it. I also think it is important to look at how women are perceived in literature and storybooks throughout history, as I am looking at how the womans body is perceived, I think the history of this goes much further back to the roles which women used to play, and how this has affected the modern day woman. I am going to read the book “Pandora's Jar, Women in the Greek Myths”. I chose this book because it goes back and reflects on old history and some of the first representations of women, but viewing this in a more contemporary light to put modern day perceptions of women and women's bodies into a larger context, giving it an explanation. I think it is important for me to look at these books, as a woman who is going to be writing poetry inspired by my own feminine body and based upon other views on the female body, it is important for me to contextualise how significant it is that I am using my words and writing in this way. During this project I am going to visit the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery By Louise Bourgeois, this exhibition explores the themes of identity and sexuality through explorations of the body. I think this will be a very useful exhibition for me as I am exploring my own identity through this project, and although Louise Bourgeois is doing this in a different way, I think it will be really interesting and influential to see how other artists explore themes like this. I have currently been looking at the artist Marianna Simnett and the sometimes grotesque visuals she uses within her works, and how I could use this to influence my work, and in the FMP I want to start looking at other artists who explore the body in such a grotesque way, and an artist I have been recommended is Doreen Garner, and how she explores the body and how violence meets this. Linking this into history and power. I am going to look into the history of paintings and visit some galleries which have collections to see how women's bodies have changed in ‘fashion’ throughout history. For example when you look at paintings from centuries ago, the more rich and prestigious women were shown to be more plump, to show they could afford food, and this was the beauty standard and what was considered good looking at the time.
