Just figured I'd write this to document my feelings over the past few days and how I bounced back from a really stupid emotioinal hole I dug myself into.

It began when I was browsing r/TopCharacterTropes on the stupid fucking site that I hate, because I'm just interested in how different character arcs are written, and I found a thread about "characters who were never going to win." It was there that someone mentioned the main villain of Borderlands 1, Commandant Steele, who dies the moment she opens the vault because it contained a giant monster that no one knew about beforehand.

So I am a sucker for characters who are doomed by the narrative but I felt kinda stupid for feeling sympathy for a villain that I knew literally nothing about. Reading more about her only made me feel worse, though. From what I'd read, not only did she get pseudo-fridged before anything could be known about her, she also got reanimated into some cyborg-zombie-slave thing that you fight in a DLC. Much of her dialogue in the DLC is a mix of hating that she's alive and occasionally being overridden by the silly Claptrap personality, which paints a pretty fucked up picture if you look too deep into it. And of course, it's played for laughs because Borderlands really likes dark comedy. It made me feel really sad for the character and made me want to yell at Randy Pitchford or something despite never playing or caring about the Borderlands series at all.

After being all depressed for like a day and writing a fanfiction I read a little more Borderlands lore and found out that Steele is likely a lot happier dead since not only did her last moments fuckin suck, the Borderlands series canonized an afterlife (although it happens in Borderlands 3 which I heard sucks but still), and that made me feel a lot better about the character and her fate.

Then I figured, "Wow, I had such a journey over the past day or two being sad about this character. What if I did that thing I do where I create a character in my sci-fi setting I'm working on who has a backstory that's incredibly similar to Steele's and is basically just a rip-off and/or homage to the original character? I did it with my setting's main antagonist and one of the catboys and some of the American characters" and this entire post is just to tell you I'm working on a new OC. That's the main point I wanted to get to. New Steele-based blorbo dropping sometime soon in my sci-fi setting.

Going into the quote page and remembering Angel tells you she's an artificial intelligence for most of the story. Probably because Jack told her to. And thinking Damn she has been getting dehumanized for years even when people do listen to her because they just assume they're talking to a machine, in a universe that already devalues robots despite their sentience. Aigh. Augh.a ugh

ITS SO...esp with the way roland talks about her when theyre planning out how to get to the bunker, its so depersonalizing. and i understand why he would be that way because he’s spent the last five years thinking shes a machine, and now a machine with malicious intent, but :(

literally every single named ai in the series shows human levels of sentience and emotional capability but they are clearly seen as having less autonomy. claptrap ofc is the most obvious answer but it also extends to felicity and balex ect. but by being forced to take the role of an ai angel also experiences that same treatment even from people she has known since she was a child. and its just. AUGH. a million deaths upon me.

here's a "joke OC" I made for April Fool's, the joke got lost in translation though.

A Lilith lookalike made from Steele (BL1), Lilith (BL2+3) and Lor (BL3). Since both Steele and Lor were at some point in development early iterations of Lilith, I wanted to play around with that idea

as you can tell, it's only funny if you know the context, so it didn't really fit with the theme... I do like how she ended up looking though, might make her into a proper OC someday

So i’ll just go ahead and drop a few borderlands body temperature headcanons so if youre interested they’re right under the cut ⬇️

- Some siren powers influence the body heat of its user. Trance users tend to have a body temperature way above average, though they still aren’t hotter than Walk users, who are walking furnaces. Lock users and Leech users, on the other hand, both have very low body temperatures.

- This is pushes even further for born sirens (I could go on for whole paragraphs about my headcanon that folks who were born sirens should be special but that’ll be for another post) and sirens who enhance their abilities with eridium frequently. Therefore, Lilith is scorching hot while Maya is freezing cold, and don’t even get me started on the Calypsos. (hyperboles)

- Shift doesn’t have much of an effect on it’s user’s body temperature, however, due to the years of constant exposure to eridium, Angel also has very cold body temperature.

- I don’t really know much about Steele, but seeing her whole « cold » motif, one could assume what my opinion is on that.

- Krieg is the ignition point on the triangle of ignition (hyperbole). Very high body temperature due to the experiments and the constant setting himself on fire thing. (Hot x cold Psyren real)

- Folks from Pandora tend to have body temperature above human average. Also, Salvador has high body temp, even in Pandoran standards.

- Gaige’s is above average (Hot x cold Gaigel also real)

- Axton’s is also hotter than average, although it’s closer to average than Gaige.

- If there is something human/alien under that suit, Zer0’s body temp is significantly below average.

This was supposed to be for Mermay, but I got sick towards the end whoops. Anyways Mermay with the Borderlands Sirens but as actual sirens. And yes I’m adding Rhys, I love the Au where he’s secretly a siren like come on.

AU time: Sirens are their own race of mermaids that many people fear due to their powerful nature. They “guard” Eridian found at the bottom of the ocean, so many people try to befriend them in hopes of getting to the previous mineral. My lil thought for this is how Angel came to be. Handsome Jack may have seduced her mother or something along the lines idk

To the fish parts: I started off picking fish that best resembles the Sirens aesthetic but later changed it to which sea creature better matches with their abilities and it was a lot of fun.

Steele - barracuda; I couldn’t find info on her abilities so I just did one that matches her personality and name.

Lilith - fire hawkfish; matches her alias and her color scheme.

Tannis - spotted torpedo; this is where I begin picking fish that matches their abilities. Because she has angel’s tech powers, I picked the spotted torpedo that can shock its prey.

Maya - sea Angel; picked this one due to its cool mucus net it spits out when catching prey and it was the closest thing I could find for her phaselock. Fly high maya

Ava - sea butterfly; same way of hunting as the sea Angel and she has the same abilities so ya.

Angel - glass knifefish; another electric fish but it had a soft color pallet that I thought would match Angel more

Amara - peacock mantis shrimp; these dudes punch with the power of the sun and are known to break fingers and tanks. It was a no brainer picking this guy for Amara and for a flashy little guy I thought he fit Amara’s big personality.

Tyreen - lamprey; she absorbs the life force out of people and this dude is known for sucking the blood out of its prey. It’s right there

Troy - angler fish; the male sticks onto the female and leech off of them I thought it fit perfectly

Rhys - electric eel; I feel like he would have a tech ability similar to Angel so electric eel

I wish I could’ve done more research I think I would find better fishes for them but oh well anyways my borderlands obsession is coming back and I don’t know why enjoy
