You’re NaomiGScorcher??? Wow!!! Your fics are amazing. You’re one of my favorite Mondler writers. I love your fics so much. I’m going through the Mondler fics on AO3 and FF.net chronologically now and leaving comments on them, it has to be chronologically bc of my OCD so I’m not sure if I left a comment on one of your fics yet, but I’ve read some of them and I love them so much. And they’re sexy, lol! Thank you for writing them! Every time I see you posted something I get excited. I’m also steelwater on AO3 if you see my comments there. Have a great day filled with Mondler!!!
Nice to meet you! And very glad to hear that you enjoy the things I've done. There are a lot, a lot, of great Mondler writers out there. I myself have done the ol' reading everything under the sun. I'm terrible though, I only use ff to read so I've probably missed out on a lot of great AO3 stories. Let me know if you find any great ones.

Chasing Shadows - Part 14
Evangeline has protected Lona ever since their parents passed away. When Lona is kidnapped by a shadow in the dead of night, Evangeline sets off to find her, despite knowing her journey will take her past the Border, where no human has walked in centuries. Finding aid in unlikely places, she and her companions must unravel the truth of Artera’s long-forgotten past and how it connects to Lona’s kidnapping.
Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Part Five | Part Six | Part Seven | Part Eight | Part Nine | Part Ten | Part Eleven | Part Twelve | Part Thirteen | Part Fourteen | Part Fifteen
I do not consent for my work to be copied, reposted or plagiarised. All parts of the work belong to me, the author.
Evangeline woke slowly, pulling the blankets tight around her as there was a slight chill in the air that was unusual for summer. She also noted the slight mustiness the pillow and blanket had, and reminded herself to wash her and Lona’s bedsheets soon.
With a drawn-out yawn, she opened her eyes, blinking a few times to get rid of the bleariness. When she looked around, she found herself perplexed by the position of her bed relative to the window, it was too close and her bed too low to the ground. Tensing, she glanced around and noticed another window on the other side of the room. When her eyes finally adjusted to the darkness, she found the stone walls where there should’ve been wood. And two sleeping figures in the room with her.
Callan and the éan, she finally realised. She wasn’t home, the past two days weren’t just a dream, and Lona…
She breathed in, feeling the rough blanket between her fingers. She was underground, recuperating from an animal attack. She was looking for Lona. Lona was alive. Breath out. Again, in, and out.
She was safe, she was okay.
Now thinking clearly, she took the chance to look around properly. Callan hadn’t moved from his spot where she and the éan had left him, and likely hadn’t woken up yet. On the opposite side of the room slept the éan. She blinked as she did a double take.
The éan was sleeping face down on the ground, legs spread-eagle (spread owl?) and wings tucked to their sides. As if they’d just collapsed face first on the ground. Maybe she was still half asleep, but Evangeline snorted, laying her face in her hands as she stifled the urge to giggle.
Feeling slightly better, she decided to sate her curiosity and pulled back the curtain on the window to peak at the strange world around her. Above her was the cavern ceiling, which had blue and yellow crystals growing out of it. Perplexed, Evangeline only recalled blue crystals on the ceiling when they’d snuck into the city. Observing them for a few minutes, she noticed the blue crystals looked to be dimming, and the yellow ones brightening.
She then recalled that the éan had pulled out the blue crystal after rescuing them from the horned beasts, and how, many hours later, had used a yellow crystal when they worked on Callan’s injuries. Shaking her head at the stereotypic nature of it, she concluded that blue crystals coincided with nighttime, and yellow with day.
She momentarily pondered if there were such crystals as these on the human side of the Border, when a sound caught her attention below. It wasn’t one distinct sound, more of a hum which Evangeline recognised as people preparing for the day.
Though she lived far from the centre of Far Horn, she’d spent her apprenticeship in Steelwater, where Kohl lived and worked. The sound of a busy city awakening was one she couldn’t easily forget, as it woke her many a morning before Kohl could.
Spotting an éan emerging from one of the nearby towers. She didn’t know if éan had the same sharp sight as the owls they resembled and didn’t want to test that theory.
Hearing a shuffle from the other side of the shack, she saw the éan rise from their sleeping position with a yawn. Standing, they folded their blanket and placed it and their pillow against the wall, revealing the yellow crystal that had been tucked away. Grunting as the light momentarily blinded her, she managed to see the éan swivel to look in her direction. Their eyes focused on her slightly, as if they could see her but not quite.
Looking away, they walked over to a large stone chest, the one they’d gotten the cloth and medical supplies from the previous night… day?
They tossed off their grey tunic into a pile with the other soiled cloths and dirty clothes and pulled on another tunic. A brown one this time.
As they continued rifling through the chest, Evangeline cautiously walked up behind them, keeping her distance but wanting to see the contents of the chest. The éan suddenly scooted away from her, causing her to tense. They looked at her, and scooted further, tapping at the lip of the chest audibly. When she didn’t move, they tapped and then chirped, before saying something to her that she couldn’t understand.
Taking a hesitant step forward, and watching them scoot away further, she allowed herself to relax slightly, and moved towards the chest. When she did, the éan moved away from the chest entirely, instead going to the corner that looked to hold foodstuffs and crockery.
Only then did she relax completely, carefully surveying the contents of the chest. On first glance she only saw cloths, clothes and pouches, all made of something akin to linen or cotton, though how they got such things underground eluded her. She hesitantly began rifling through the éan’s things, doing so audibly so they could hear and stop her if they wished.
When they didn’t react, she slowly lifted the folded piles of clothes and placed them on the floor. Eventually she found some slightly finer made clothing, which was soft to the feel and looked quite luxurious.
Placing those clothes at the top of the pile so they wouldn’t get dirty, she gently lifted a fine pair of trousers when she heard the tell-tale shuffle of papers. Perplexed, she dug further and found a few scrolls and manuscripts, squashed beneath the pile of clothing and smelling quite old. Unrolling one scroll revealed words that looked similar to Arteran, and yet made no sense to her.
Some more digging revealed a leather folder. Opening it revealed two separately bound manuscripts. The first with the word ‘Éanac’ in large writing. It also held another word she recognised, ‘Arteran’. Though it had an old spelling of it, spelling, ‘Arterran’, with an extra r.
Flipping through the pages revealed it to be organised like a dictionary, with foreign words next to Arteran ones, albeit using an old way spelling of some of them. Closing the manuscript and picking up the next one revealed the same word, ‘Éanac’, on the front. And another foreign word. ‘Coedeg’.
Evangeline recognised the new word, as part of it was what one of the magical races were called. The Coed.
Seeing this manuscript had the same formatting as the previous, she surmised that it translated the éan’s language, ‘Éanac’ into the language of the coed. And the previous one translating Éanac into her language. Which provided her some insight on how the éan spoke Arteran.
While flipping through the second manuscript, she heard a groan behind her. Placing the manuscript down gently, she turned to face Callan. He had his upper body leaning back on his arms and looked to be stretching as he glanced around. When he stretched his hind legs though, he flinched, staring confusedly at his bandaged thigh.
Evangeline walked over to him, checking over where he’d hit his head. The bump was barely visible now.
“What happened?” Callan asked, groaning as he rubbed his head.
“You collapsed as soon as you entered the shack. The éan and I patched you up, but you hit your head when you fell,” she answered.
“Is that why everything hurts?” he hissed, flopping back down on the pillow.
Evangeline saw a flickering light in her periphery and realised that the éan had lit a fire in the firepit. There was a metal grate set atop the walls of the pit and the éan looked to be boiling some type of vegetable. Taking a metal spoon in their claws, they poked at the vegetables. Seemingly satisfied, they then used the spoon to mash the vegetables in the pot and began stirring the porridge-like mixture.
Glancing back at Callan, she saw him with his eyes squinted closed, as he hissed through each breath. His wounds were certainly painful, Evangeline didn’t blame his reaction.
“Thank you,” she said suddenly, her eyes moving off Callan to stare at the fire, “for not leaving me behind.”
Instead of waiting for him to answer, she stood abruptly and moved to her discarded satchel. Pulling out her waterskin she drank half of what was left before walking back to Callan and handing it off to him to drink. He took it, drinking gratefully, coughing as he hadn’t it back.
The éan moved from the firepit towards the crockery corner, before making their way back with three clay bowls.
“The éan spoke Arteran to me yesterday, while you were unconscious,” Evangeline said. Callan gave her a shocked look as the éan spooned some of the porridge mixture into a bowl. As they moved to pass it to him, he eventually got himself into a seated position to receive it.
“I found some manuscripts in their chest. They looked like translations from their language,” she continued, accepting the bowl the éan passed her. It was warm in her hand, and the smell set off her ravenous stomach.
“Maybe someone taught them Arteran from the manuscript?” Callan said, blowing on his porridge.
“Maybe,” Evangeline sighed.
Callan hummed, before he turned to speak to the éan. Evangeline stared at them both perplexedly as they talked back and forth. Finally, Callan turned to her. “I couldn’t get much, but I understood that someone did teach them Arteran a long time ago. They’ve been unable to keep learning since, but kept the manuscript.”
Evangeline nodded, mind moving elsewhere. The éan seemed intent on helping them, so they could stay down here until the horned beasts lost interest. Once they returned aboveground, they technically part ways. But the attack had spooked her. The woods were filled with dangerous creatures, which she was woefully ignorant and unprepared for. And if what took Lona was the horned beasts, she’d have to go looking for them and their dens to find her. She had no idea where to starts and would need Callan’s insight on where to go.
“How long do you think this will take to heal?” she asked him, catching him off guard as he was tilting the bowl to eat the porridge.
He steadied the bowl to avoid upending it, then stared at his wound humming. “Two, maybe three weeks,” he said sheepishly.
Evangeline frowned. That was a week longer than she would’ve liked, but she needed to surface with Callan. He was the only one who could tell her if the beasts had lost interest. She wouldn’t know until they were right on top of her, and she was no use to Lona dead.
There was nothing to be done then. She’d have to wait for him to heal and hope Lona could hold on for longer. While underground with him, she’d ask for as much information about the forest and everything beyond the Border as she could.
Her eyes suddenly caught on the éan. Their bowl was cupped between their wings, which they used to tilt the bowl to eat. They had surprising amount of control without the use of fingers.
It suddenly occurred to her, that while the éan lived underground, they knew how to navigate the forest. They possibly spent more time in the forest than Callan had.
“Hey,” she said to Callan. He paused from eating again to look at her. “Would it be possible to teach the éan Arteran?”
“What?” he said.
“You said that your language and theirs are similar but only with a few basic words, right? Well, they have a manuscript that is meant to teach Arteran. So, why not teach them? That way we both can understand them.”
“But how are you going to do that? You don’t know Éanac and they’re blind, they can’t see the words.”
“If your languages are similar, then the pronunciation would also be. You can just read the Éanac words on the page and try your best to pronounce them, and I can help them with the Arteran translations,” she said, finally going to eat her porridge.
“There’s a big flaw in that plan,” he said sheepishly. She stopped and sighed. There always was.
“And what is that?” she asked tiredly.
“I… can’t read.”
Paused, staring at him. She suspected from how good he was at Arteran, he was quite well read. So, this was unexpected.
Callan chuckled self-consciously, scratching his head then flinching as he forgot the bump. “Gaothach is an oral language, we don’t write nor read because of it. And I learned Arteran orally too, by listening to humans and speaking it with my granddad.”
She sighed, rubbing her temples frustratedly. Well, there goes that plan.
“But,” he started, “We still might be able to teach them. It would make communicating more convenient if we all had a common language. The common words between Gaothach and Éanac are some basic words. If you speak a word in Arteran, I can try and use those basic words to explain its meaning.”
“Would that work?” she asked, feeling a little too hopefully with how cobbled together the plan felt.
“It wouldn’t hurt to try,” Callan shrugged, before turning to the éan to say something to them. Probably to relay what they’d just spoken about. The éan blinked, before smiling widely. They gave off a series of chirps as they suddenly hopped up and darting around. While it did put Evangeline on edge, she was glad they seemed so eager to learn. It was easier to teach those excited to learn.
But where to start? Perhaps grammar? That might be too complicated, basic words and sentence structure would be better. She struggled to remember just how Lona began learning how to speak. Rubbing the bridge of her nose, she realised that teaching someone who knew another language was going to be different to teaching a baby how to speak at all.
Callan hummed to catch her attention. “Would… you be willing to teach me to read too?” Callan asked slowly.
Caught off guard by the odd request, she considered the idea for a moment. It seemed only fair to give him something in return for the information she would get. And it would make it easier to teach the éan as well.
“I suppose I could,” she answered. His face lit up, and she couldn’t stop the small upturn in her frown when she saw both his and the éan’s joy.
She began eating her porridge, only to find it had gone a bit cold. Sighing she ate it anyway, and found that it was pleasantly spiced, though she didn’t recognise any of them. When she’d finished her porridge, a question occurred to her. “Why did you learn Arteran anyway?”
Callan had already finished his food and passed the bowl back to the éan who was cleaning up and organising around the shack. “It was something my grandad and I did together. He’d been doing it since he was young and when I found out, I wanted to learn too. It was something special he and I did together when I wanted time away from the clan. Plus, I was curious, it’s not every day you learn human speak,” He chuckled, then coughed lightly.
“Why did your grandad learn it?” she asked, also handing her bowl to the éan.
“Well, my grandad always had this crazy idea that one day humans and gaoithe wouldn’t have to fight anymore. He said for that to happen an understanding would have to be reached. And how could that happen if neither race could, well… understand each other.”
Evangeline snorted sarcastically. She expected something like that from Lona, not from someone likely three times her age. “Like that could ever happen.”
Callan chuckled solemnly. “Like I said, just a crazy idea.”
Then his chuckle devolved into a cough. And then he kept coughing. Alarmed, she rose put an arm on his back. It was when he started chocking that she began clapping him on the back.
“No, no, that isn—” he shook his head while trying to say but was interrupted by more coughing. Evangeline backed up, bumping into the éan who must’ve rushed forward to help him. He whispered something to them, causing them to rush off to the crockery.
“What did you say to them? What do you need?” she said.
“St-steam,” he managed to get out between coughs.
With that, Evangeline whipped around, seeing the éan return to the firepit clutched in their claw and a waterskin cradled in their wings. Taking the waterskin from them, she poured its contents into the pit once they’d set it over the grate. It would take a bit to begin steaming, so she rushed to Callan and guided him closer to the firepit while they waited.
The éan used a fire poker to stoke the fire, and soon the water began to steam. Pulling it under Callan’s head, she watched as he inhaled deeply. His coughing eventually subsided though his breathing still sounded hoarse.
“Water, please?” he said, gesturing to the waterskin laying discarded next to her. It still had some water left, so she uncorked it for him before passing it over. He drank slowly, pulling back when he coughed again. Passing it back to her, he returned to steaming.
It was a while before he finally pulled away. None of them had moved, certain that he’d start coughing and choking again and they’d have to rush to help him.
“Thank you,” he said with a rough sigh before saying something to the éan.
Evangeline nodded. “What happened?”
Callan hummed, glancing at her briefly before closing his eyes. “I struggle from a chronic cough. I’ve had it since I was a foal. I’m surprised I didn’t have a coughing fit sooner considering all that has happened the past few days,” he said ruefully.
“Is there anything that can help with it?”
He nodded. “Certain herbs help. Usually, they’re taken as a tea. Honey helps as well.”
“That’s going to be hard to get down here.”
“Mhm,” he replied. The éan approached, asking something and Callan began conversing with them. Seeing them deep in a conversation, Evangeline decided to return to the manuscripts she’d found.
As she paged through them, she saw the éan moving towards her. Scooting out of their way, they grabbed the soiled cloths and clothing from next to it, dumping it into a large drawstring bag. Next, they grabbed their own satchel, stuffing both their and her waterskin inside.
“Hey,” she said, getting up and going to take it back. Their head swivelled in her direction but they just continued towards the doorway.
“Don’t worry, they’re just going to refill it I think,” Callan soothed, making her pause.
“Where are they going?” she asked, moving away from them.
“I think they’re going to get some supplies. And run a few errands from the looks of it,” he finished before being hit with more coughs.
Evangeline bolted forward, but stopped when he waved her away. “It’s fine… I’m fine.”
Unconvinced, she watched him until his coughing subsided, before she finally sat by the chest and picked up the Arteran manuscript. She watched das Callan flopped down, looking moments away from drifting off. He’d taken the pot of water off the fire and placed it on the lip of the firepit. Within reach to put back on the fire if he needed to steam again.
As she flipped through the manuscript, she endeavoured to keep a close eye on him until the éan returned.

S (bc ur a bad oc momther)
the apple truly does not fall far, it seems 😔✌️
sharra borell — from house borell for the conquering tl. mostly just there so i can get some background for other ocs but she’s the eventual wife of daegon targaryen (another oc) and mother to maesys (another oc who is the start of the currentl steelwater line for the hotd tl)
sandra underwood — another tcsmg baddie! she’s an up and coming children’s writer from florida who was traveling across country with her best friend to see and editor when they take a wrong turn in texas and fall into a lil trap laid by johnny and his brothers (leslie and very reluctant, kerry). she ends up finding herself trapped in the mill and had to put her trust i. kerry who helps her escape and the two end up having the slow burn of the century as they both escape to her grandparents strawberry farm
savannah alpert — RIP QUEEN! she’s haunting kyle’s narrative. she’s her older sister, the mother of adorn and girlfriend (lbr WIFE) to cj and everything they do now reflects her in some way, shape or form, she was the best of them and truly the heart and soul of their formed family until back in the QZ.
slater — i literally forgot his LEGAL name was kit, oops 🥴 he’s a tcsmg / dbd oc! in his tcsmg verse he’s a troubled teen (as i’m killed his dad in self defense when he was like fourteen, but dude had it coming!) and was sent to live with his aunt in VA. he ends up being kinda ostracized and always getting into trouble, but, he meets alondra and the two immediately fall into a friendship that quickly develops into something else (nicholas sparks wishes he was us). unfortunately, the two are forced apart when they’re 18 and he ends up in prison she goes across the US. they’re reunited by happenstance when they pick him up hitchhiking (he’s just gotten out of prison) years later and it’s subsequently the night before they find themselves in the hands of the family.
in his dbd verse, his backstory is much different; he grew up with a dad in and out of his life and mother who didn’t gave the emotional capabilities to care for a kid. he eventually got himself straight for a time but after his mom passed he went off the deep end and the entity ended up taking him when he walked into the woods intending to end his own life. in this verse he forms a friendship and eventual relationship with @auricfog ‘s, jen doe.
sosie sanchez — another tcm (2000s edition) oc! her sister went missing (literally another victim of the crazies) some years before she was born and she’s had to deal with being the redo kid most of her life. her father is pretty absent and restrictive while her mother is overbearing and … not really capable of seeing her anyone else except a replacement for her dead sibling. when she’s 17 she ends up running away from home with a biker gang to like … stick it to het parents and it’s all fun and games until it isn’t anymore. she ends up having a fling with an acquaintance she knew from home who was in the group , deacon crawford, and he eventually convinced her to leave the lifestyle behind. she went back home, utterly defeated and what feels like years later is reunited with duke (not on the best of terms) and gets stuck trying to survive a night of terror.

My grandmother is Persian. When she was a kid her dad died and she was sent to an orphanage because her mother couldn't take care of all the children. The orphanage was mostly Ashkenazi and they taught her how to make gefilte fish. We ate it at almost every holiday (she's still alive but not cooking at 97) and I was sure it was a Persian dish and I would tell it to people and they'd look at me like ??? Only after years I discovered that nope. She did also make great Persian food, though.
this is so sweet i dont think i can confidently say that being in an orphanage... is... sweet... but i think it’s really special that she made it every year that means it really meant something to her
