I think like, roughly seven to eight Knot left Rose during the book. I believe it was Anni, Phil, Doug, Steamhead Steve, Baba, Swret Terri Pickford, and then the twins Pea and Pod. Rose threatened to empty their bank accounts and such, but she never got the chance to. More so, they were the only Knot in “America.” The Knot itself has been around for 3,000 + years, so they’re probably some left in Europe. Do you think they could return in any way?

I don't think the ones who left would return, not that there's anything to return to with Rose gone. With their money still intact, they'd probably be able to stay around. Although, they'd probably die off quickly like Grampa Flick did since they were running out of steam and I doubt they could function well without Rose's leadership. They could try to survive on their own but the chances aren't high.

2022–11–29 I begin reading a biography of Count Rumford, that eminent patron of the sciences and useful arts. This came to me in the form of a little pamphlet reprinted from The Contemporary Review, volume XLIV, which appears to date it to 1883, over the name of J Tyndall. This appears to denote John Tyndall FRS, who was at the time Professor of Physics in the Royal Institution, founded by Rumford. Tyndall was very much interested (as Rumford had been) in the subjects of light and heat, and made a lecture tour of America in 1872, which corresponds to a reference at the beginning of the article.

arrogance can be a pretty damn good look, but not for a girl who’s barely in her teens. it sits oddly on her, all limbs and growing bones and hormones all over the place. she’s like a half-inflated balloon convinced it won’t pop! once it reaches higher altitudes. but they always do.  that’s adolescence for you ––– all of us go a little crazy during that time. Crow can remember some of his own less-than-prudent escapades, his own conviction of sheer immortality ( he hadn’t understood the real feeling of it until he’d met Rose, but he lets go of that slippery slope and focuses ahead.

“  you  will. ”  he  meant  it  in  both  fashions.  she  would  sleep,  eventually.  even  for  a  girl  of  her  talents  she  couldn’t  stave  it  off.  and  that  she  simply  would  dream  of  it  again,  and  again  and  again  ad  nauseum.  there  were  no  easy  words  for  this,  for  him  to  let  her  down.  “  i’m  sorry.  it’ll  come  and  go,  popping  in  and  out.  but  what  you’ve  been  through  would  give  anyone  terrors. ”  he  wishes  he  could  take  it  away,  box  up  those  nightmares  and  throw  away  the  key,  create  a  new  shelf  for  it  in  his  head.    

“  you  can  tell  yourself,  in  the  dream  --  that  it’s  not  real.  get  familiar  with  how  it  starts,  how  it  feels.  you  can  prepare  yourself  better.  but  none  of  this  is  foolproof. ”  his  face  hung  long ,  eyes  soft  and  full  of  sympathy.  he  can  only  help  so  much,  understanding  that  there  were  somethings  that  were  your  battles  alone.

ROSE THE HAT HEADCANONS

Rose wasn’t always as powerful as she is now. As a rube, she definitely had shine unlike any other. While some can be telepathic, some influencers/pushers, Rose had the unique ability to steal other Rubes’ shine and make it her own. It’s why her maker took an interest in her and offered to turn her rather than consume her as she was on the cusp of childhood and adulthood. It could have gone either way, and if she didn’t join him, he would devour her.

Normally, steam taken strengthens the Knot and that applies to Rose as well when they consume children in the way that they do, but when Rose encounters adults with the Shine, she’ll first offer the option to turn them, based off my previous headcanon.

When she takes a power from someone, it does drain them, but doesn’t kill them. Before Rose learned how to wipe a person’s memory (a talent she stole from someone), her maker would kill the adult. Once she learned that little trick, it makes it easier to leave them alive. What’s a worse punishment for a Rube than letting them lead a mundane life? They’d feel an immense loss for the rest of their mortal lives not knowing what they’re missing. Power taken is always sealed with a kiss.

Some examples of powers Rose has managed to steal so far: Tracking steamheads Ability to enter another person’s Mind Space Influencer/Pusher (not as strong as Snakebite Andi’s) Truth Serum/Lie Detector Telepathy Astral Projection Minor Intuition

This list grows over the years, which is why she is the most powerful member of the True Knot and no one dares defy her. This also really solidifies how powerful Abra is if she can take on Rose the way she does. It’s only when Dan and Abra tag team that takes her down.

Writetober 2021 - 19 'Loop'

Although Rose had intended to keep it to herself, she did tell Crow about the hugely powerful steamheads she'd detected in Derry, Maine. She knew it was Derry, Maine - because even that brief connection had put her right in the heads of several figures. She wasn't there long enough to tell how many, or why they were standing in a circle, their power looping around them like a circuit. However, she was there long enough to decide they weren't worth it. "And why's that?" Crow asked, stroking Rose's bare back as they lay together. "We're not exactly running low on steam and...there was something else there with them. Something...it was hurt, about to sleep, but it's influence was all over that town like a sickness. Bad shit. Not worth bothering the True about, no need to fight for food when so much of it is around." This had quenched Crow's thirst, but Rose thought about it longer into the night. It wasn't another of the True. It wasn't anything like them even though it fed on humans in a similar way. She felt It's influence in each of those rube kids. Like a fungal growth in their psyche. Who knew what that kind of poison would do to their steam.
