How do you know if you’re antisemitic?

How to be a good ally for Jewish people. I responded to a wonderful ask from @faggotry-enjoyer about how to be a better ally and to discuss Israel/Palestine with people who are inclined to distrust Jews due to unexamined antisemitism.

Important post about the dangers faced by Jews as an extreme minority. There are good examples in the reblogs and replies and tags—both of great ways for non-Jews to provide support as well as if antisemites denying their own antisemitism. Therese even one example of ways Jews can and do disagree with each other while remaining respectful without delving into antisemitism OR Islamophobia OR denying the rights and dignity of Palestinians. Jews can do this and so can non-Jews. But that can’t happen if people hate us too much to listen to anything we have to say.

The emotional toll of antisemitism on Jewish people.

Example of the death threats we get that are designed to make us look like bad guys.

If Jews can learn about the Holocaust in detail before we even reach the age of ten, you can and should too.

Don’t trust people who rely on bad sources. People do make genuine mistakes. Here’s an example of bad faith link sharing. Especially when Reblogging things. Even I don’t have time to always check every source in a post. Also, it’s possible that a link seemed legitimate when it was originally posted but the source is either no longer trustworthy or the OP got better at assessing sources. If an error in their original sourcing is pointed out, they should correct it publicly. If they are sharing a link as an OP they should always take time to be as responsible as possible.

The Skull (1965) 💀

Director: Freddie Francis (Amicus Productions) Genres: Thriller, Horror, Occult 💀 Notes: Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Patrick Wymark, Great Sets and costumes, occult, supernatural, demonology, possession, haunted object, absolutely loved it!

Review: This is easily going into my top 1960's horror films. It has everything you could want from a horror film from this age. From the creaking gate in the cemetery opening sequence to the wonderfully detailed study of Dr. Christopher Maitland it's a film that's vintage visual candy. Even the practical FX, sets and lighting used for the hauntings of the Skull made this film feel like a fun time. The story is paced well and with acting from the legendary Peter Cushing as the lead and Christopher Lee in a supporting roll as a fellow collector this is a film I'd recommend as a great way to start your delve into 60s horror or at least added to the top of your to-watch list. Overall I give The Skull (1965): Must Watch 🖤🖤🖤

Prologue

Fire wakes you, rising in your veins. The world around you is a blur of silhouettes and lights that make your eyes ache. Chatter fills the room, dull and distant as if you're listening to voices through a wall. Something brushes your leg, and the pain that accompanies it is sharp and searing. Then you cry out and the room goes still.

A hand reaches out and you grasp it like an anchor. Whoever it is speaks to you, their words light and understanding even if you can't understand what's being said. There's a stiffness that restricts your arm, a tapping against your skin, and then the world dissolves into dreams and memories.

You return to the present in fractured pieces.

The smell of bleach hits you first, nostalgic and overwhelming. For a moment you think you fell during a clean-up job; blood-slicked floors are hardly a rare occurrence, especially where those newly made are concerned. When you move to sit up, however, a searing pain burns in your upper thighs.

A woman appears at your side, a flurry of dark curls rushing toward you. The room has the imposing sterility of a hospital, but she isn’t dressed like any nurse you’ve ever seen; her tight black shorts, and tuxedo jacket seem more suited for entertainment than healthcare. It’s possible, though unlikely, that Desiree sent someone from the casino to check on you.

No. There’s something wrong with that idea, but your brain is to jumbled from whatever you’ve been given to sort out the reason.

“Easy there,” the stranger says with a tone of authority as she forces you to lower your back onto what is unmistakably a hospital bed.

“Hospital…?” is the closest you get to forming a real sentence.

She shakes her head.

“’No hospital.’ You were very clear when my girls found you.”

Tears sting in your eyes as the memory of that night slowly resurface. You woke up in the back of your father’s car, jeans soaked with blood. He’d drugged you, for your good as much as his, and when you tried to get out of the car you couldn’t remember how to make your legs move. The last thing you remembered before waking up here was two women with tall heels and even taller wigs arguing about what to do with you.

In your daze you’d managed to force out two words before succumbing to exhaustion.

“Do you know where we found you?”

“Yes.”

A single tear rolls down your cheek. She takes your hand and gives it a reassuring squeeze; you notice you aren’t wearing any sort of medical bracelet.

“You’re safe now.”

It was a well-meaning sentiment, but she couldn’t be further from the truth. You’ll never be safe again.

Something about her is familiar, and your brain is finally functioning enough to start to put some of the pieces together. Her face is blurred in places, not a symptom of your sedation but because your mind is struggling with what it sees and what you know. You can see through it if you focus hard enough.

Her knees, normal human knees, look as if they’ve been forced into the position. There’s something wrong about it that forces a shiver through your body. While her curls are naturally voluminous, there’s an exaggeration to their height in an attempt at covering filed-down nubs of horn. Most telling of all are her pupils, which seem to resent being confined to such circular symmetry.

“You’re TGP?”

She releases your hand, any warmth in her demeanor quickly dissipating.

“No, not for some time. And I’ll thank you not to speak of They Themselves again during your stay here.”

In an instant everything becomes clear. The Good People, often shortened to TGP, were associates of the Corbeau family. She might not know who you are or what you’ve done, but she knows better than most what you’re running from. No doubt she sensed your magic the moment she saw you.

You hope that you haven’t sabotaged a potential alliance by bringing up what is clearly a difficult topic for her.

“Where the fuck am I, anyways?”

A grin spreads across her face, and she tells you that after her performers found you bleeding out into the street they took you to a local drag bar called The Broken Crown. However, the bar was only part of the building’s thriving entertainment industry.

“You’re in our treatment center,” she explains with a playful smirk, “where we cure our most depraved customers of their perversions.”

You can’t help but laugh at the thought of a medical kink playroom being used for actual emergency medical treatment. The amusement quickly dies when you realize the implication.

“Does that mean everyone…?”

It’s a struggle to get the words out; you haven’t had time to process the cause of your life-threatening infection yet. She gives you a look of equal parts pity and sympathy.

“No one else was in the room when I sewed you up.”

The tears return, but you wipe them away with the heel of your hand. There will be time to mourn later. Right now you have to focus on your immediate survival.

“I owe you more than my life, then.”

She looks at you in silent consideration. The fearful part of you worries that she’s weighing offering you up for whatever reward Nettie would give for your life. Instead, she surprises you.

“I can get you papers if you need them. A new name and everything. You can leave whatever’s chasing you in the past.”

“And in return?”

Let's Start With Context.

Before we get into actual reviews and opinions, let's start with why this blog exists, who I am, and why I decided to see almost every movies that comes out this year.

Why does this blog exist?

This blog exists to help excise opinions from my mind. I'll be honest, I don't expect anyone read these reviews much less actually care about my opinions. But screaming into the void is a fun past time.

Who am I?

My name is Roan, I work as a server in a local theater chain. It's like a theater where you can order food at your seat. (Yeah yeah, the blog title says usher but let's be real What Your Server Thinks doesn't let you know I work at a theater as well.) The rest of this section is just gonna be me describing myself in order to establish my perspective so if you don't care move on to the next section.

I am white. I am nonbinary, born male. I am pansexual. I was born into and maintain living as a middle class American. And I've never been anywhere outside of America. I live in the Midwest. I am a member of Generation Z according to the first university that popped up on Google. I am a self-described punk. I am politically liberal. (Like intensely so, don't get me started.) I hate Capitalism but also can't live anywhere else in the world. I support the troops but hate the military industrial complex. I am an atheist, but work hard to not make that my entire personality. I like rock and punk music. I have a good relationship with both my parents. I was not popular in school. My dad introduced me to most my hobbies. My favorite types of movies are superhero, monster, and sci-fi movies. My favorite movie is Shazam! from 2018. I am a self-described nerd. I read comics and play tabletop games. I am an amateur game designer. Uhhhh.... I'm scared of dogs...

Why did I decide to see every* movie that comes out in 2024?

Basically because I can. As a benefit for my job, I am allowed to see one movie a week. But my managers do not care if people break the "once a week" rule, so as an anarchist corporate drone I feel it is my duty to exploit this lack of caring. Also my social life outside of work kinda imploded in 2023, so I don't really have anything better to do.

Finally, let's disabuse some notions.

For starters, I am not a professional film critic. I have not studied film beyond watching YouTube videos. I do not know the first thing about making film and don't really have an interest in learning. I mostly look at films from the perspective of the layman, because I am a layman. Additionally, I swear a lot. I make some inappropriate jokes. I make nihilistic jokes. I occasionally make jokes about committing suicide. I do not intend offend and work to avoid such, but I also do not take steps to remove my politics from my reviews, and use my beliefs and opinions to inform them. If this will be a problem for you, do not engage with my reviews. You will not enjoy them and I do not care if you get upset. As a final note, I do not plan to have any consistent upload schedule. I will post my reviews when I write them. As I cannot see movies for free the weekend they open, I will not be able to get any reviews out before the majority of people see the movie, so don't come looking for purchase advice unless you are okay with seeing movies weeks after they come out.

One last note: Spoiler policy!

Like pretty much everything else, I am not going to stress too much about spoilers. I don't like spoiling movies if I feel like the experience is worth while, so I wouldn't spoil a plot twist in a good movie. But other times I need to make a point and I will not hesitate to spoil. Basically if I am going to recommend the movie, I'm less likely to spoil the movie.
