Been a while since this captain has sent an update, huh? Between doing base management to get materials for my ship, and making sure the base I have is suitable to live in even after I leave, don't have a lot exciting to report. So how about another story of my training days?
The training mission was simple, more of a glorified field trip really, travel to a few colonies here and there, see what they were growing and how, specifically how they were growing things thier plants shouldn't have the support for, and sometimes eveb with out green houses. Simple stuff really.
While we are leaving one colony and getting ready to head towards the next one, we get a message form them, they are predicting a drought and wanted to know if we could bring them a shipment of water, the captain agrees and we make a detour to a uninhabited fresh water planet, a quick make shift pumping station and a couple hours later our cargo hold is full and we are ready to leave again. During FTL travel we hear something go "thunk" in the cargo hold, captain makes an emergency stop and some of the crew to check it out. One of the barrels of water is busted open. And thus a lot of freaking out on the ship.
Now for some spoilers, this is where I learned not to send students alone to check things. The barrel was not a water barrel, it was a healing water barrel that we have to mix our own to treat minor cuts, burn, etc. It was also busted into, not out of. Like the students thought.
While the captain and the trained protectorates on board were trying to get everything under control with everyone on the bridge, someone peaks over at the ship logs and notices doors are being opened else where on the ship, and everyone is on the bridge at this point so they shouldn't be.
I was one of the few who had any sort of weapons on them, so me and a few of the proper crew go to see what's going. Last door opened was to a hydroponic chamber, one growing pussplums and boneaboos, so we head there.
Once we were in the hall leading to the chamber we hear the sound of metal being torn apart, from the hydroponics chamber, and notice it looks like something has pried the door open, before it opened it self. Once inside some of the plants are destroyed and a vent cover is broken, and what looks like blood (aka boneaboo juice) is all over the floor. At this point everyone is rightfully on edge.
Thankfully hydroponics due need specific air controls so it's vent system isn't part of the rest of the ship, and after tracking it through which doors its opening we finally corner the mysterious creature causing a bunch of chaos and noise.
It's a floran stow away got snuck in with the lander when we went to go water. Apprently they got separated from thier hunting party, and thought they got left by mistake, and then noticed us landing, and mistook us for minikong, which thier hreenfingered warned them about, thus the hiding. And when they broke open the barrel of height water, they assumed it was something dangerous, and decided they lived in the vents now.
Luckily for them, while they offer almost nonthing, the boneaboos and pussplums they snatched aren't the worse thing for a floran to eat, and we had other carnivores on ship.
We brought them with us and eventually got in touch with thier tribe and returned them safely.
If you are ever stranded, please don't just stow away on a random ship, some ships don't keep all of thier bays safe for living things during FTL to cut costs, so you don't know where is safe. And, unless they are having thier own issues, a protectorate ship will help you

We're making a Starbound/Terraria inspired space sandbox game!
We're making a 2D sandbox game similar to Starbound! Or uh, terraria in space.
#nodev contains shitposting
#planetarium contains dev progress
Specifics under the cut
Who are you?
Aspen - Project Lead, Programmer, Pixel artist, Sound Designer.
Hey! I'm Aspen, I've been programming and making games for many many years in basically every engine there is... But never felt the drive to finish one, until now! I consider myself very experienced in the engine we're using (Gamemaker Studio 2.5) and have confidence we'll be able to make this game a reality. I also run the Tumblr account, so assume it's me behind the wheel as a default. Thank you for checking the game out!
Alec - Concept artist, Character Designer
H a l l o I'm Alec, I like writing and drawing and painting and designing shiiiiiiiit. I adore world building and have frequent bursts of creative possession in which I conceive and birth the greatest ideas and concepts in a mere moment. Otherwise, I can be a total dumbass and completely useless. I'm good at colours 👌 I have been a 85% a home-brew DM for about 2 years now and that is the greatest proof of my ADHD-given God powers of creativity. Slay.
What a cool guy!
Design pillars
Immersion. Above all else, I would like roleplay (casual or serious) to be natural and well supported. I would like players to find engaging with the world, and it's characters to be very personal.
Innovation. Tropes such as "You spawn in a green forest and can walk left or right" will be actively avoided. Biomes will have generation that presents more unique movement opportunities. Such as geysers in rock pools launching players high up, or giant twisting vines that hold up chunks of land to hop between.
More quality less quantity. Planets will be significantly more content-dense than Starbound, and perhaps controversially travel between them will be more difficult/expensive as well. This would encourage players to take advantage of all the resources presented on each planet, instead of hopping from one to the next. This would also encourage us throughout development to give each planet as much love as possible. Each planet should feel like a 'miniature terraria world'. Though actually achieving that is easier said than done.
Meaningful content. Procedurally generating creatures from 100 different pre-set monster parts could technically produce limitless alien creatures for players to encounter. But in both No Man's Sky and Starbound. I find this novelty to wear off quick, these creatures are not manually, meaningfully crafted and beyond an unusual appearance and some shallow gameplay changes... They do not create much of a memorable experience for the player. In my opinion, anyway. I would rather hand-craft every creature and make them all significantly unique and interesting. That's not to say procedurally generated creatures won't ever have a place in the game, but they certainly wont be as prevalent as others games.
Okay well... What's finished?
Fundamental lighting shaders akin to Starbound.
Some world generation brushes and basic commands.
A text mark-up language (heavily optimised), and game chat.
Extensive custom debugging tools
Hard and soft-loading of chunks to save on as much memory and CPU usage as possible.
Complete unloading, and compression of chunks on top of the previously mentioned system. As well as a live-saving system.
Setting, Story baseline, and conceptualization of the first 3 playable species. Each species will have a different starting planet, and immediately different playthrough.
Designs and cultures of several additional unplayable races.
Character proportion tests, sprites and sketches.
First-pass on collision functions.
Weighted Tile variance and tile connections.
CONCERNS
Multiplayer. While I have made an online multiplayer game before and it's definitely doable for this game, it would require some practice in a one-off test game to be fully confident. It would also take a LOT of time.
Modding. As far as I know gamemaker games are notoriously difficult for players to modify. Something like Unity is far easier even without mod support. Gamemaker on the other hand is difficult even if I want to design systems in favor of modders. This is kind of a problem for later, I have faith there'll be something we can do to make it work... But a cursory look says it won't be easy. I would be extremely disappointed if there was nothing we could do.

@roleplay-abiogenesis2 || Moved
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but Seven seems like the sort of guy who is quite a storyteller. He seems rather capable of weaving a tale with just enough info revealed to inspire intrigue, because he wants you intrigued." Chamyle leans back against the wall behind her, speaking through an earpiece while reading through the paperwork for her own non-RFA work that she had. She still had a duty as The Archivist, after all... "Keyword being intrigue, here. You've almost seemed to be obsessing over it since he started bringing her up."
Background noise is paid attention to as she speaks; clearly he was out and about at the moment.
Then there's the self-centered flirting again, something that elicits a slight chuff from the young woman. She was no stranger to it, though nowadays she saw the wordplay as more a game, since feeling didn't come too easily for her anymore. Thankfully for her it was a game two could easily play that.
"Hm-hm~ Me? Jealous? Not at all." Her own voice comes out smooth and clear as ice. "After all, who doesn't love a good mystery? It's just a surprise that the one right in front of you doesn't hold the allure needed to keep your focus~ You wondered for but a day before the next mystery arrived and stole you away. Locked you in its jaws. It's almost a shame really; I was looking forward to seeing if a curious guy like you had what it took to uncover more~" Oh, she's playing. She is absolutely playing.
#roleplay-abiogenesis2#Paranormal Problem-Solver || Chamyle#Starbound Tales || Truth Lies and Parties#She really heard Zen start with the flirting and went “aight bet.”

Happy Chapter 2 Episode 11 Anniversary! 1 year ago today, DRDT fans’ brain chemistry was changed forever…
In celebration, I’ve drawn 3 versions of David I’ve played in some longterm roleplays.
explanations for their designs:
Lifeline - dead and in purgatory. the purgatory appears as a clinic, so I put him in a hospital gown. tried to make his skin look discolored like a zombie’s, and also (while you can’t see it in this particular style) his eyes are really hollow and dead. probably does the uneven frog blink at you.
Death is Inevitable - YTTD longterm series. survived the first RP. in the sequel RP, he came back as the protagonist of the side story where he had to find and rescue the hostages in the current game. older and more disheveled. greying hairs from stress and tanner skin, eyebags from lack of sleep due to nightmares. :( firearm certified, though!
Starbound - the main villain for the first half of the RP. gets redeemed and is overthrown by another more terrifying villain. he thinks he’s doing a good thing and is super vocal about it, hence his more confident pose. decided he absolutely needed to make a big deal about it. very zesty..
here’s to another year of sogging.

A collection of images I made while playing a DND campaign with my friends and partners, titled "Starbound".
Set in our shared nostalgia of the 90's, a horror tinged JRPG-inspired amalgam of our shared traumas, exposed to the searing light of our modern sensibilities.
I was invited to this campaign as a late addition, after one of the players had requested to borrow Croix for their backstory. Eventually they lured me in to secretly guest as my own fursona, a troubled magic addict running from the metaphysical dragon that drove him to self imposed exile. Convinced of his ruinous nature, he vows to protect the one and only person he cares about, his younger brother Frankie, by leaving when Frankie needed him most.
Croix Romano, like functionally any other character I've ever roleplayed, may as well be Coach McGuirk from Home Movies. A definitional loser, relentlessly self-sabotaging in the way where you expect that he will always be a fuck-up. Broken as he is though, he is exactly where he should be, serving the people he cares about most at any expense.
I could write for hours about Starbound.
Sugar is a rock, Madoska tells our fortunes, Magirock explosions and Jules' pet dragon, the hotel stay and the road trip, stomping around like Godzilla and the haunted Toys R Us run. A battle against a cosmic goose, the state faire, running from the cops, I could write a whole comic about Starbound and all the things we did.
But that was our journey and our story, and so it sleeps in our hearts forevermore.

Mod talk Category: Quality of life
I know my way around the starbound workshop better than most so I figured I'd share the love and talk about the mods I have installed, the category for this particular post being quality of life, as that's probably the most universally liked one. Quality of life means anything that adds ease of access to certain features, new mechanics, or simply more variety
Are these mod recs? Not necessarily. Read carefully, make an informed decisions, and back up your save file beforehand if you do want to try some of them out. Happy modding!
Disclaimer: The lore compliance subcategory contains only my best guess, there's always a chance I missed something
"Extended block crafting" by HaxoFelyne Summary: Adds crafting recipes for 32 uncraftable blocks because fuck uncraftable blocks Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: Brains are the only really broken block in the game and this mod doesn not add them, so balanced Lore compliance: N/A
"Why is this not printable?!" by Cthonyxa Summary: Makes more items printable Usefulness: 8/10 Cheating?: Things like art and major artifact clues remain unprintable which makes sense Lore compliance: yes
"Hop On Shops" by Argle Bargle Summary: Adds platform collision to various outpost objects Usefulness: 2/10, good for immersion Cheating?: No Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"More idle poses" by Argle Bargle Summary: Unlocks more combinations of arm, leg, and head positions at the character creation screen. Also applies to npc's. Usefulness: 8/10, starbound HEAVILY relies on its roleplay elements so this is super useful, I honestly have no idea why it's not in the base game Cheating?: No Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"Show item names!" by Silver Sokolova Summary: Shows the in-file name in the lower left corner of the description window Usefulness: 4/10, it can sometimes provide insight the game itself does not like the species tag, usually helps you deduce what mod the item is from, and can make building in admin mode easier. I just think it's neat Cheating?: It could be under some circumstances, like if an item is meant to be mysterious and the name gives it away for example. Lore compliance: N/A
"Shadow/Fenerox Crewmember Dialogue" by Achromatic Summary: Replaces the above species default dialogue with something more suited to their vanilla speech patterns Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: No Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"Learn Blueprints on Scan" by (cat emoji) Summary: The outpost now sells a matter manipulator addon that allows you to learn the recipe of every craftable item you scan Usefulness: 9/10 Cheating?: It absolutely is, but it's arguably justified since blueprints are rare and some can't even be found through legit means like certain items in the lunar set for example Lore compliance: Seems like something S.A.I.L might be able to
"Wooden furniture reskin" by Bubblywandering (me) Summary: Makes the wooden furniture set slightly more visually interesting in my humble opinion. Twas originally made for personal use but some people wanted it for their game so I uploaded it Usefulness: Non-applicable, it's just a matter of taste Lore compliance: No?
"Tweaked Asra Nox Vanilla Sprite" by The Blasphemer Summary: Replaces Asra's portrait and character sprite with a slightly altered version Usefulness: I love most of the portraits in the game but Asra's portrait always gave me a weird vibe so this is a welcome alternative. Her character sprite is given visible sclera which is not in line with starbound's art style though so mixed feelings are mixed Lore compliance: Sure why not
"More Metal Wood" by LazerRay Summary: Makes those metal trees in snow biomes drop metal coated wood Usefulness: 7/10 Cheating?: Makes metal coated wood both farmable and available early on, this has no practical application thought, so no Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"Extra Zoom Levels" by Patchumz Summary: Allows you to zoom out a couple extra times Usefulness: 10/10 if and only if you regularly screenshot your builds Cheating?: Yes, it allows unnatural levels of insight into what lies ahead of you. If you have self control you'll be fine Lore compliance: No?
"Varied Bounties" by Kais Summary: Allows max level bounties to spawn at stars other than fiery Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: Criminal stats scale with bounty level so not really Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"Weapon stats" by Tripod Summary: Displays the stats of weapons (vanilla or modded,) including DPS Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: Nope Lore compliance: N/A
"Hat Mask Fixes" Summary: Fixes some hats so they don't block facial features such as beaks and beards Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: No lol Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"Race Traits" by Oмεяυıп Summary: Gives the different species custom stats, for example florans have increased hunger and hylotl take longer to drown, can be turned on or off, most modded species are supported and you can toggle it on and off whenever Usefulness: 6/10, adds variety Cheating?: A few thorns and poison resistances here and there but otherwise pretty balanced Lore compliance: I'd say so
"Non-playable NPC Race Quests and Crew" Summary: Makes the nonplayable races give quests and become crew members naturally, with custom dialogue to match Usefulness: 10/10 why is this not in the base game?? Cheating?: No Lore compliance: Yes
"More Tenant Species" by NimbleJim Summary: Allows additional species options for tenants and corresponding dialogue Usefulness: 8/10, additional customization options are always useful Cheating?: No Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla, species =/= interests lol
"Unisex [Novakid/Human] Hair" by (cat emoji) Summary: Just what it sounds like, all hairstyles are available for either body type. Note: There is an apex version as well but it's broken Usefulness: 10/10, it makes no sense for futuristic humans or living stars to give a shit about gendered hairstyles Cheating?: No Lore compliance: Arguably more-so than vanilla
"Diverse Weather" by gay moth aunt Summary: Adds new weather patterns and allows more types of weather per planet Usefulness: 5/10 adds some nice variety Cheating?: This increases the game's difficulty overall so no Lore compliance: The gravity fluctuation weather is a little out there but other than that, yes
"Novakid Codices" by jss2a98aj Summary: Are you salty that the only codex that references the novakid is just some hylotl missionary being racist (read: a missionary?) Then this is the mod for you! Adds a variety of novakid codices that can be found in novakid villages Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: No Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"I'd Like To Sit Here" by vampycat237 Summary: Adds an invisible 1x1 chair type object that you can place anywhere with platform collision Usefulness: 4/10, niche immersion usage Cheating?: No Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla, I guess
"Rogues Out Camping (and also the Miniknog)" by Refolde Summary: Adds bandit-style encounters of all vanilla species Usefulness: 2/10, variety Cheating: Makes the game slightly harder so no Lore compliance: Arguably more-so than vanilla
"Crew Size Unbound" by SerpentsBlight Summary: Allows vanilla ships to skirt regulations and have more than 12 crewmembers max Usefulness: 6/10 Cheating?: Absolutely Lore compliance: Yes (you monster)
"Corbent's Interactive Crew" by, you guessed it, Corbent Summary: Allows you to direct your crew (to a degree,) ups a few of their stats, allows them to swim, adds some dialogue, and some npc's will randomly ask to date you rather than you hiring them Usefulness: 10/10 Cheating?: Makes crew members somewhat better, but not too much better imo Lore compliance: Makes crewmembers say random dialogue lines instead of one, making them feel less individual :/
"NPCSpawner+" by Depression Hurts, Eat More KFC Summary: Allows you to create an npc of any species, color scheme, type, personality, and clothing Usefulness: 9/10, good for porting crewmates over to new player characters, skirting gendered hair style restrictions, giving certain npc's impossible color schemes, and putting an oc in the game without having to play as them Cheating?: Let's you get free crew members so yes, something something self control Lore compliance: Definitely not
"Job Offers" by this is a profile name Summary: Adds craftable tools that allow you to recruit any friendly or neutral npc for the indicated job, including merchants and other ordinarily non-recruitable npc's Usefulness: 9/10, we've all had that one merchant we really wanted to recruit but couldn't amirite Cheating?: Totally bypasses the need to do quests to recruit crewmembers for all the benefits thereof. You'll need good self control to avoid abusing this mod's power Lore compliance: Eh
"Ever[Frogg/Lana/Penguin]" by Star-X Summary: Makes the indicated outpost shops sell all their stock at all times no matter what Usefulness: 4/10, you could just be patient/find the relevant blueprints but eh Cheating?: Oh yes Lore compliance: No
"CityScaper - Building Made Easy!" Summary: Let's you build a colony prefab style, for a price Usefulness: Depends on who you are Cheating?: It's expensive as shit to use so I'd say no Lore compliance: N/A
"Item Frame" by Peassly Wellbott Summary: Adds an item frame bench where you can craft two types of item frames, one which shows the icon and one which shows items at full size. Works on both vanilla and modded items. Note: Some items will not display correctly Usefulness: 10/10, WHY is this not in the base game?? Cheating?: No Lore compliance: N/A
"Aging Alien Alcohols" by Lilegite Summary: Allows you to craft a fermentable version of drinks and a few other items which will eventually turn into alcoholic beverages Usefulness: 5/10, some utility but it's mostly just for fun/roleplay purposes Cheating?: Adds some non-perishable hunger-restoring items via set-it-and-forget-it means so it does have an effect on game balance, but only slightly Lore compliance: More-so than vanilla
"Sapling merger!" by Silver Sokolova Summary: Lets you create unnatural trunktype and leaftype combinations, what has science done! Usefulness: 4/10, it's just for aesthetics Cheating?: Barely even counts lol Lore compliance: It's just grafting right?…Right?
"Craftable Seeds NEW" by RevvEmUp Summary: Allows you to craft seeds out of crops, also adds some saplings (including a red apple one) and makes the three dye-making flowers, mushrooms, and thorn bushes farmable Usefulness: 9/10 Cheating?: God yes Lore compliance: It seems reasonable
"The Game Hunter" by Wellbott Summary: Allows you to turn entities into decorative objects, this includes npc's (you monster) Usefulness: 5/10, purely cosmetic but really cool Cheating?: No lol Lore compliance: You can do so many messed up things in starbound, what's one more?
"Weapon assembly" by alberto-rota Summary: Adds the weapon assembly station which lets you break down (most) randomly generated weapons into parts and mix and match them into new ones, also adds the weapon painting station which allows you to dye the parts individually Cheating?: In the sense that it makes your randomly generated weapons less random, but otherwise no Lore compliance: Yeah
"More Planet Info" by Erisss Summary: Shows the dungeons and biomes present on the surface of the planet, the underground remains a mystery Usefulness: 8/10, a time saver Cheating?: In the sense that it somewhat reduces the randomness factor Lore compliance: Seems like something S.A.I.L would be able to do
"Detailed Ship Encounters" Summary: Functions like More Planet Info but for ships Usefulness: 8/10 Cheating?: Reduces randomness Lore compliance: More or less
"Betabound!" by Silver Sokolova Summary: Adds outpost npc quests, re-implements scrapped bosses and their corresponding codices (but no other codices thank god,) adds a new tech slot and many new techs, lets you switch out your matter manipulator for any other digging tool, makes food stack, reskins a couple food items, adds many weapons, adds new tools and makes digging tools repairable, adds furniture crafted from high tier ores, adds new ores, adds more fuel options, adds more cooking recipes and alters the buffs of many food items, adds upgrade kits for weapons, makes it possible to copy books and even write your own, makes some weapons dyeable, lets you copy and craft blueprints, and adds some monsters. Be aware that it does alter random weapon generation and changes a few vanilla sprites though Usefulness: 8/10, makes your character more customizable Cheating?: Drastically alters the balance of the game in the player's favor Lore compliance: The boss codices reference explicitly non-canon characters and events, other than that it's perfectly fine

So, seems this sectors anti-priate measures are lacking, and means getting a mech for space flight to handle them might be something I need to look into as the only protectorate captain here. Also means a lot of supplies the shipwright needs have had a "delayed" shipment, yay.
Though me getting lunch has given me a starting point for another report: While I was ordering the meal the person behind the counter knew I, as a saturian, am an obligate herbivore, and warned me that the dish I was ordering contained eggs. This is fine, despite being classified by most people as "meat" herbivores can safely consume eggs if properly prepared. The dish did not contain eggs, it contained eggshoot, which could be an issue for obligate carnivores.
Eggshoots, as thier name Implies are egg shaped plants most commonly found in tundra regions of planets, though these resistant plants can be grown on most planets, and can often be seen grown in Avian settlments.
Thier similarities with eggs do not stop with thier shape, mature fruit of this plant jave a soft white flesh, not dissimilar to a soft boiled egg, with a pocket of thick yellow nectar with in which the seeds float with in, giving animals of thier homeworlds both a meal and some liquid refreshment at once.
Thanks to thier low growth requirements and rather qucim growth cycles, they can often be found in markets as an animal egg substitute, and act wonderfully as such. If beat with a small bit of water, the flesh of an eggshoot quickly becomes a thin gel that works as a replacement for egg whites, and the necter can be used in place of an egg yoke as is, with the added benefit of being safe to eat raw, making them a near perfect substitute for eggs in vegan dishes. If you can safely eat plant matter that is.
Despite how well they mimic animal eggs, eggshoots are still plants, and can cause issues with carnivore stomachs if too much is used. While it's not life threatening if a carnivore eats eggshoot products (save for rare allergies) they should be avoided, unless some moderate or worse discomfort is worth it for your favorite icecream flavor.
Thankfully the manger of the food vender, who got a simular version of this, was smart and knew it'd be a bad idea to argue with a protectorate botanist and at least put up a warning sign.

🌃 @roleplay-abiogenesis2 || Continued 🖤
It was strange, talking to someone she barely knew over the phone. The Archivist was incredibly isolated and so Chamyle Raydeo was too. Having contact with anyone, let alone a method of contact anyone could access. At least Jumin wasn't calling about anything serious; she could only assume he just wanted more information on her.
"Indeed; though people tend do tend be focused more on their stresses. They'll forget to take in world around them." As she speaks, she finally stops pacing, stopping at the window. She can't help falling quiet for a moment when asked about Silversoft. "He's my own feline companion, correct; I adopted him about seven years ago. I'll have to show you all a picture sometime, once I'm able to acquire a more recent one than the ones I have on-hand."
Another small pause. "He's at home, right now- with a caretaker and my daughter- so I can't quite obtain one on my own."

usually when I pick up starbound again every few years I play as Ed. the beginning is always a bit of a slog, usually takes me kinda forever to get past the first mission, get my shit together and get moving. I like to explore the entire surface of worlds before I move to the next one. This is how it's always gone every couple of years.
This time I'm playing as TB and within the first hour I had a base, a small farm, and I'd cleared the first mission and unlocked all of the tech mods. And I arguably have more restrictions in a roleplay sense than I do with Ed.
Also hunting spears are SO op early game, their damage is insane per spear and you can make a billion of them with a couple minutes on your starter planet. Damn. I only just learned this last night.

Starbound players, I don’t have polls but I feel like asking: What is your go-to species (mods included) when playing, and why?
It was hard to decide between avali and neki, but for me I think avali win
They’re so cute, and there’s so much there for them. There’s so much lore, so many expansion mods (some more lore accurate than others). I love roleplaying an avali who has lost their pack to the Ruin and responds by desperately trying to piece together a new pack (which will never be the same of course) while seeking revenge.
