Books read in July 2024
-Epithet Erased: Prison of Plastic by Brendan Blaber started July 1, 2024 and finished July 3, 2024 - 5/5 stars. I liked this book a lot. This was a story between two sisters and how the death of their mother affected them both. Mollyās sister has such an interesting epithet and it clashes against Mollyās. The characters we are introduced to are so interesting and I love that Giovanni came back. He truly had Mollyās interests at heart. He was incredibly supportive of both sisters which was sweet. The ending was rather cute. Molly was finally with people who truly cared about her. I hope we get more from the Epithet Erased universe. Brendan Blaber writes his characters very well. When I was reading this book I was reminded of a video he put out (JelloApocalypse is the youtube name) called āSo, Youāre Stuck in a Time Loop!ā Due to the fact that nearly each time Molly met her sister in her dream world she would force Molly and her friends out and they would have to go back to the beginning to find their friends. It was such good shit.Ā
-Star Trek: Deep Space Nine- The Dog of War by Mike Chen started and finished July 3, 2024- 4/5 stars. When I ordered this book I really should have realized it was a graphic novel. Graphic novels are very fast reads. It was pretty good. The illustrations were quite astounding. There were quite a lot of them with the characters and other dogs. It was cute. The story was solid.Ā I got it because I wanted to read more of Mike Chen's stuff. His work is great.
-Thicker than Water by Mike Carey started July 3, 2024 and finished July 8, 2024 - 5/5 stars. Man I love the Felix Castor series. Didnāt care for the beginning too much but I guess the succubus character has to be reintroduced somehow. Other than that this book was quite amazing. Fixās brother had a role in this book which means we got some family drama and shit. Itās interesting to me how āF Castorā was painted in blood on a car window and the police think its the main character who is involved. I mean the person who painted it could have been saying āFuck Castorā right? Anyway there was a background story detailing something that happened in Felixās childhood and I know immediately that Anita Yeats was the one married to the guy who got ripped to shreds and wrote āF Castorā on the car window. I like how Felix is good with children. I liked this book a lot. I need to buy the next book in the series at some point.Ā
-Royal Street by Suzanne Johnson started July 8, 2024 and finished July 11, 2024- 3/5 stars. I try to read urban fantasy written by women and the main characters are women. They never hit the same as ones written by men and are about men. The setting of this book was quite interesting. New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit. It broke or at least damaged the border between the real world and the supernatural world. The main characterās mentor goes missing and she is on the hunt for him. It was interesting to find out that the mentor was actually her dad this entire time. This is the third or fourth urban fantasy book I have read in which the mentor is killed but the fact that itās her dad is kind of heartbreaking. Donāt think a mentor/dad would assign their protege/daughter a mission to flirt with a magic dead pirate to trap him and bring him back to the other world.Ā Perhaps that will harden her in the next book. She is a wizard and gets assigned essentially a wizard cop as a partner. He is strangely protective over her. Itās a little obsessive for my tastes. He also can shapeshift into a golden retriever which he uses to essentially sleep in her house. Itās weird. His cousin appears as well. Itās a weird love triangle until he is taken by the magical creatures for some reason? I donāt know. I think I should read the second book.Ā
-A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White started July 12, 2024 and finished July 16, 2024- 4/5 stars. Iām glad I kept reading past the first chapter. I was going to be pretty bored if the race car driving was going to be present in the book a lot. This book was quite interesting. Science fiction universe with space travel and all that and yet people could do magic. Not everyone has the same magic and one of the main characters canāt do magic at all. The other main character can essentially read machines with her magic. Itās fascinating. Thereās also a sapphic relationship in this book which is interesting. I like how the spaceship crew essentially kidnaps the magicless character and the other character is essentially brought along for the ride. She kind of has to as she is framed for murder. They are on the hunt for a missing ship so itās a treasure hunt. Good book overall. The library doesnāt have the sequel so oh well.Ā
-The City of Lost Fortunes by Bryan Camp started July 16, 2024 and finished July 20, 2023- 4/5 stars. This book also takes place in New Orleans post Katrina. Itās constantly being referenced as āThe Stormā which is weird and repetitive. The main character is the son of a god but itās never revealed who it is. All sorts of gods are talked about in this book. It seems like every god from every culture exists in this book which is kind of cool but it also makes the book feel unfocused at times. The main character can find things and has powers of his own which he loses for a bit when he is essentially forced into a card game with various gods and beings who are powerful. This book has various parts which is good. In some ways this book didnāt feel like the first book of a trilogy but rather the last book as so much shit happened in it. The book became infinitely more interesting when the main character died and was resurrected in a womanās body. She is then referred to as she. Itās quite interesting. It was essentially a murder mystery until this happened. I think the other two books are at the library so I should check them out at some point.Ā
-The Stars Beyond edited by Charlotte Wells Llewelyn started July 20, 2024 and finished July 23, 2024- 3/5 stars. Anthology book with 6 stories about contact. I read that as first contact. I liked the first two stories a lot. The last story was pretty good too. There isnāt much to say. I like the Twilight Imperium universe. Itās quite interesting how a board game series was written into a book series.Ā
-Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky started July 23, 2024 and finished July 27, 2024- 5/5 stars. This book has some great world and character building. I donāt usually go for 600 page books but this was given to me to read and so I didnāt feel guilty for taking quite some time to read it. The chapters about the sentient spiders were quite interesting to read. I feel bad for the human main character, being woken up from sleep every so often to some utter bullshit. For the longest time this was a 4/5 stars for me but the ending really sold me. I like that instead of complete genocide of the human race and or the spiders, the spiders essentially infected the humans with a chemical and they all work together now. Canāt wait to read more of that in the sequel.Ā
-Emily Wildeās Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett started July 28, 2024 and finished July 31, 2024. - 4/5 stars. I needed something different after reading a longer science fiction book. I heard this book was good and I do want to read more about the fae. I like how research focused the main character is. Sheās awesome. She doesnāt really read people all that well which is entertaining to read. Bit relatable. Itās quite interesting how her Cambridge coworker, Wendell Bambleby is a member of the fae and seems to care for her a lot. Based on his attitude towards everything you wouldnāt think so. There is moment in which he is saving her from fae and he chops off their heads, thinks its satisfying to do so and then rewinds time to do it again. It reminds me of something. I think something similar happened in a Stephen Blackmoore book? Iām still unsure but itās such an intriguing moment. Didnāt think Bambleby would be capable of doing something so gruesome and powerful. Overall good book. I think I shall check out the sequel at some point.Ā

Character Spotlight: Rom
By Ames
Among your A Star to Steer Her By hosts, Rom might be the most polarizing character from all of Star Trek. Some of us (and you all know when Iām talking about Chris) worship the ground this grand nagus walks on. And some of us (oh hello, Iām Ames) would rather throw him out an air lock. His rather offensive depiction as someone who seems to have low intelligence ends up contradicted by his otherworldly engineering skills. His actually very funny scenes get offset by how his whole character becomes a goofy punchline. His Ferengi values are deplorable and yet his character journey and love of his family are commendable. And that voiceā¦
All that to say: this blogpost is going to be our biggest roller coaster ride yet.
So get ready to dig into a bowl of tube grubs and keep your tooth sharpener handy as we dig into the moments we adore about Quarkās lesser brother and the moments we detest about him. Read on below and listen to this weekās podcast episode (jump to 1:01:34) for all the Ferengi gossip. And donāt forget to call your moogie.
Best moments
You saved your brotherās life Letās start off with the good stuff. In āNecessary Evilā when Trazko is pillow smothering Quark, Rom screams and screams for help, foiling the assassination plot and saving his brotherās life. And you know what, itās actually a pretty funny button when Rom screams again when he realizes that, with Quark still alive, he wonāt be inheriting the bar any time soon.
I would be proud to have a son in Starfleet Even I, a bonafide Rom hater, can admit that his relationship with his son is one of the best things about his character. We see him stand up to Quark (a rarity!) and support Nogās desire to join Starfleet in āHeart of Stoneā and weāve got to give the guy credit for wanting Nog to pursue his dreams of becoming better than his father, low bar as that may seem.
The Ferengi not-so-Benevolent Association When the Nagusās personality has gotten rewritten in āProphet Motive,ā he somehow ends up making Rom the senior administrator of his new Ferengi Benevolent Association. And youāve got to give Rom credit for seeing a chance to scheme that even Quark didnāt notice, as he embezzles money from the foundation before Zek turns back to normal. Heās got the lobes!
Moogieās got the lobes for business In addition to the lovely father-son relationship with Nog, Romās relationship with his moogie is also extremely sweet. He eventually supports her profit-making scheme in āFamily Businessā even though itās illegal for females to make money, tricks Quark into coming to terms with Ishka, and by the end of the episode is in on the plan to hide some of her profits from Brunt, FCA!
My sonās happiness is more important to me than anything, even latinum Itās worth mentioning how supportive Rom is of Nog again because in āFacetsā he foils Quarkās nefarious plan to sabotage his Starfleet Academy exam, even threatening to burn the bar to the ground because he places his sonās personal journey so highly. He also goes to Garak to have Nogās cadet uniform made personally, which is just about the cutest moment in the show.
Our union, united, will never be divided Rom proves to be a champion of the laborer in āBar Associationā when he starts up a union for Quarkās bar to fight for better pay and working conditions. Again, itās another practice thatās illegal under Ferengi law, but that doesnāt stop Rom (even when it gets Quark attacked), who rallies his band of waiters and Dabo girls together with confidence weāve never seen before.
Number one dads! We donāt get a lot of scenes between Sisko and Rom, the two best dads of the station (sorry Miles, but neither of these proud papas left their child to die in the woods). When Jake and Nog are quarreling over their odd-couple habits in āThe Ascentā, the two fathers concoct a scheme to get them to talk out their problems and be friends again by pretending there are no other quarters available.
Do I have a reason to stay? Maybe itās because Lewis Zimmerman comes across as such a cretin, but it feels like a victory when Rom asks Leeta out at the end of āDr. Bashir, I Presume?ā and she decides to stay at the station instead of leaving to become Dr. Zās sex object. Even though everyone already knew sheād say yes, it takes him the whole episode to muster the courage, but letās take the win.
Self-replication. Thatās the only answer. Romās contradictory character traits are nothing if not fascinating. Sure, he couldnāt find a cup of water if you dropped him in a lake, but he still comes up with the ingenious idea to have the cloaked minefield also be self-replicating to take on the Dominion in āCall to Arms.ā Moments of sheer brilliance like this make Rom a character of simultaneous simplicity and complexity.
I walk through minefields Romās profound bravery is on display during season six when he works with the resistance to undermine the Dominion occupation. And it all caps off with āSacrifice of Angels.ā Rom may not have had time to prevent Damar from taking down the minefield, but he still sabotages their weapons array, giving the prophets the time they needed to save the day.
Weāre not commandos, weāre negotiators What could have simply been a farcical play on The Seven Samurai or The Magnificent Seven gets a fresh take when Rom has a rare epiphany in āThe Magnificent Ferengiā. The Ferengi donāt have the chops for fighting (except for Leck, whom we love), and Rom points out that they should treat the release of Moogie as a business deal, something more in their wheelhouse.
A kinder, gentler Nagus Romās entirely hyperbolized character arc concludes with him becoming Grand Nagus in āThe Dogs of War.ā Sure, itās definitely entirely out of nepotism because his mother had put him there, and sheās also definitely going to be the one ostensibly in charge because she can pull his strings, but what a journey! And heās so magnanimous about it that he even gives the bar back to Quark!
ā
Worst moments
Not next to that human boy. I donāt want you to have anything to do with him. Onto the bad stuff! In āA Man Alone,ā Rom doesnāt even have the caricatured voice yet, but does start the series with all the typical toxic Ferengi values. It takes a battle for him to agree to let Nog attend Keikoās classroom, and even when he does, his anti-hooman racism shows when he wonāt let Nog sit with Jake, just as Sisko didnāt want his son hanging out with that Ferengi trash either.
Now go to your room. And no studying. A few episodes later, Rom pulls Nog from Keikoās school in āThe Nagusā after getting criticized by Zek for allowing his son to learn from a hooman female. Itās one of Romās biggest faults (and Quarkās too): his preoccupation with displaying as a typical, profitable Ferengi even among people for whom their value system is hot garbage. Rom at least eventually overcomes it.
Romās. Nice name for a bar, donāt you think? Another case to make that point: Rom becomes the lackey of Zekās son Krax and helps in the attempt to kill off Quark in āThe Nagus.ā Itās not until later that we see more brotherly love, one-sided though it may seem. But this early in the show, Rom is much more of a typical Ferengi, obsessed with amassing power, fame, and fortune above all else.
Ferengi, Romans, Countrymen: Lend me your ears We here at the podcast really rooted for Pel in āRules of Acquisition,ā a female who really has the lobes to break free of the governmentās oppression of her gender. So when Rom outs her to Quark as a female (after a scene way too comically goofy of him literally looking through Pelās socks to find incriminating evidence), we canāt help but start siding against him, the dirty rat.
You know, come to think of it, my earās bothering me too Like I did with the Quark post, I will call out all the uncomfortable uses of oo-mox whenever the show sinks to such a level. We see Rom trying to trick Faith Garland into giving him oo-mox in āLittle Green Menā ā while his son is actively getting it! ā and I just find it so gross. For how much oo-mox is played up to be a sexual act in this show, this is sexual assault, plain and simple.
Too. Much. Oo-mox. And to make things grosser, we get even more oo-mox references a couple episodes later in āBar Associationā when we learn that Rom has given himself an ear infection from too much oo-mox. And itās self-inflicted. So basically what weāve learned from this scene is that Rom masturbates so much that he gives himself an infection, a detail I wish I never had to learn.
Even. More. Oo-mox. Iāve got one more oo-mox mention to get out of my system because Iām just so angry every time it comes up. Literally right after Rom has admitted to rubbing his ears raw to Leeta in āBar Associationā and she shows some sympathy for him, his response is to request oo-mox from her! Theyāre not even dating at this point! Itās disgusting. I hate it. Minus a hundred points.
The better to hear you with Speaking of Leeta, itās exactly a season after this that Rom finally asks her out in āDr. Bashir, I Presume?ā (as we mentioned above!). But! This is a) after we learn that his first wife Prinadora swindled him on their wedding extension contract like a chump, and b) after we watch him literally tuning his ear to eavesdrop on Leeta and Zimmermanās conversation. And somehow he still never gets the hint sheās into him. Like a chump!
If you liked it then you shoulda put a Bajoran earring on it Iām just gonna lump what a shitty partner Rom is to Leeta into one screed. In āFerengi Love Songs,ā he tries to make her sign a Waiver of Property and Profit just because Jadzia and Miles were teasing him about not being very Ferengi like. This after he started wearing a Bajoran-style earring, which strikes me as on the questionable side of cultural appropriation.
Later in āCall to Arms,ā we see Rom trying to suggest Leetaās wedding dress literally be a couple handkerchiefs and a loincloth (gross) and then once theyāre married, he decides sheās leaving the station before the Dominion rolls in, without her getting a single say in her own life (more gross!). Why are all the men in this show so shit at relationships!?!?
You said the reward was twenty Shockingly, Romās incompetence hasnāt come up as much as I expected, but his ability to ruin things through miscommunication and shenanigans is on special display in āThe Magnificent Ferengi.ā He blurts out that Quark is cheating the other Ferengi out of reward money, riles up the rest of the team, and thus gets Keevan killed because he canāt keep big mouth shut.
Foul ball! Iām not alone in hating on the campy mess that is āTake Me out to the Holosuiteā but Rom is so disruptively, dangerously bad at playing baseball that it warrants being on this list. How he makes it as far as he does in the tryouts only speaks to how terrible Sisko is at coaching. The guy breaks Quarkās damn head. Thatās how bad he is. It goes past being funny to just being idiotic.
Thatās why the lady is a scamp We have space for one more bad āRom is a nincompoopā joke that doesnāt land. In āThe Siege of AR-558,ā weāre tortured with Romās deliberately atrocious cover of āThe Lady Is A Trampā just because Ira Behr really needed to shoehorn Vic Fontaine into as many of the final episodes as possible, and it shows because itās just another lowbrow, asinine, bottom-feeding gag. Check that off the list.
ā
Well, that may have gone off the rails but whenever I have to sit through oo-mox jokes, I get testy. And sadly I already know thereās going to be more of that next week with our final Ferengi spotlight on Nog! So make sure youāre following along to catch that, join us as we continue our watchthrough of Enterprise over on SoundCloud or wherever you podcast, engage in negotiations with us on Facebook and Twitter, and stop making oo-mox jokes!

IDW Publishing is celebrating Star Trek: Deep Space Nineās 30th Anniversary with a new five-issue comic book series. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Dog of War hails from writer Mike Chen and artist Angel Hernandez. The comic will be aĀ ālost episodeā set during the show.
An āextremely rare purebred corgi from Earth makes its way aboard Deep Space 9 when Quark cuts a deal to procure it for a potential buyer. After all, a Ferengi without profit is no Ferengi at all! But the corgi named Latinum comes with unexpected cargo that shakes Captain Benjamin Sisko to the core: a Borg component discovered by a crew sent to uncover Cardassian technology after the stationās reoccupation.ā (IDW Publishing)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Dog of War #1 (of 5) goes on sale in April 2023. The issue will feature Cover A by Angel Hernandez, a wraparound Cover B by Chris Fenogolio, which will also feature the cast of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Cover C by Andy Price, which will connect with covers from all five issues to create a diorama of DS9 characters with canine lookalikes. Special Retailer Incentive editions include a black- and-white variant of Hernandezā cover and two Deep Space 9 schematics variants with and without trade dress.

Make It So Friday
This graphic novel/comic shouldnāt work. The publicity calls it a ālost episodeā and it definitely feels like that. But, then, a good portion of it is about a Corgi. Yes, a dog, a Corgi dog. A purebred dog. Sure, the other part of the story is about a Borg-ish device and the person or people who want to possess it. But, the twist with the Corgi made it definitely a 90s sort of āepisodeā. Ooh, and, Jadzia Dax was in this story as well. Itās always fun going back to the times during DS9 beforeā¦ letās go withā¦ before Ezri (no shade to Ezri, just, I definitely liked Jadzia better). Apparently it was written to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Deep Space Nine (oof, that makes me feel old), and, it does the show proud in every single way.

Books I bought recently
Broken Souls by Stephen Blackmoore- If I wanted a physical copy of this book I had to buy on Amazon. I try not to do that. Anyway, I'm a few pages in.
Epithet Erased: Prison of Plastic by Brendan Blaber- I don't buy internet creators/influencers merch but I will buy their books. I like Brendan Blaber's work and so I am sure I will like this.
Star Trek- Deep Space Nine: Dogs of War by Mike Chen- When I bought this I didn't realize it was a graphic novel. It makes sense that it is and I'm sure I will enjoy it. I am trying to read every Mike Chen book
Thicker than Water by Mike Carey- This book hasn't arrived yet. For some reason its taking longer that books 2 and 3. But anyway, I like the Felix Castor series a lot so I'm willing to buy the next book.

Character Spotlight: Garak
By Ames
No one here but us plain, simple tailors this week on A Star to Steer Her By. Weāre finally scrutinizing fan-favorite recurring character Garak, whoās definitely more complex and nuanced than even some main characters weāve discussed before. As we assembled our classic Best and Worst Moments lists, we found that Garak has the most moments that somehow end up in both. Thatās how morally (and physically) grey this guy is.
So letās get our measurements taken as we spotlight DS9ās resident Cardassian spy, played so stunningly by Andrew Robinson (have you read his book yet? Itās amazing). Scroll on below or decode some ciphers with us on this weekās podcast discussion (jump over to 48:23). Of all the moments weāre spotlighting, which are the best and which are the worst? My dear reader, theyāre all best moments. Even the worst moments? Especially the worst moments.
Best moments
Let us haggle Our very first introduction to Garak in āPast Prologueā sets him up as mysterious, sneaky, and downright sassy. Itās always nebulous just how far his covert information extends versus how much heās ever just toying with Julian, but in this early episode, he helps the doctor uncover some shady dealings that the Bajoran terrorist Tahna Los has been engaging in. And itās delightful.
Schemes within schemes Garak and Bashir team up again in the season two āCardassians,ā in which Garak sees through decadesā worth of Cardassian scheming (the best kind of scheming) to expose Dukatās war orphan plot. The details are convoluted and Rube Goldbergy, but the tailor puts together all the pieces and concludes that Dukat is looking to undermine Gul Pa'Dar, some-freakinā-how.
Personally, I find this style a bit too radical Listening to Garakās smoothtalking is always extra fun because heās always saying more than is just on the surface. Even when he doesnāt have to! In his own way, he warns Quark that Natima Lang is in danger in āProfit and Loss.ā By the end of the episode, he goes so far as to shoot Toran, saving Quarkās lady love and her students before they go āout of fashion.ā
My best friend, Elim The first episode to appear on both lists is āThe Wireā because itās just so Garak. While he never tells Bashir the truth once, heās at his most vulnerable when heās telling his various Elim stories. In his own Cardassian way, he connects with his dear doctor and expresses things about himself that, though not empirically true, are him at his most real. And the shippers rejoice.
Major, I donāt think Iāve ever seen you looking so ravishing We give Major Kira major props for her role in the stunning āSecond Skin,ā but Garak plays a large part as well. When Kira and Ghemorās backs are up against the wall, Garak comes through for the DS9 crew. And like when he killed Toran in āProfit and Loss,ā heās able to put his Cardassian patriotism aside to kill the hell out of Entek and quip about it at the same time.
The spy who loved me Itās no wonder people ship Bashir and Garak so much when there are episodes like āOur Man Bashirā to fan the fires. And when things go awry in the holodeck, Garak is able to quip his way through the Bond-style holoprogram that they find themselves trapped in, all the while mocking what Julian seems to think the spy world is actually like. And he pulls off a tux pretty well too!
Excuse me, my dungeon awaits So many times that Garak saved the day have seemed to just be convenient for the character, but heās especially heroic in āBy Infernoās Light.ā He fights through his fears to go into the claustrophobia closet in the JemāHadar prison and remote into the waiting shuttle. Without Garak doing what needed to be done, surely the JemāHadar would have killed them all.
I promise you I will come back While the relationship between Garak and Ziyal always seemed kind of one-sided to us, we must admit that it was good for both characters to have someone whom they could relate to on the station. We see between āIn Purgatoryās Shadowā and āBy Infernoās Lightā that they care about each other, though sadly Garak never understands why before her untimely death.
A very messy, very bloody business Another episode that belongs on both lists is āIn the Pale Moonlight.ā We already gave Sisko some guff for this one, so letās start off by being impressed by the layers of Cardassian scheming Garak does. Sure, itās unethical and kind of monstrous, but itās also a thing of beauty watching all the pieces of Garakās plan come together to trick the Romulans into getting into the war. Not only can he live with it, but he sleeps like a baby.
Alan Turing, eat your heart out Garak uses some of his Obsidian Order talents to do some code breaking for the Federation in āAfterimage.ā His arc in the final season of DS9 is a hell of a journey because he knows the work heās doing for Sisko and crew will hurt the Cardassia he loves, but he also knows itāll be for the best in the end to rid the quadrant of the Dominion so they can start rebuilding.
We might have a revolution on our hands Speaking of the Cardassia that Garak loves, he joins Damar and Kiraās little resistance in āThe Dogs of Warā and goes down to the planet to incite a revolution against the Dominion. When even Damar has opened his eyes to the atrocities the Founders are commiting in the Alpha Quadrant, then you know that itās got to be something worth fighting for.
The last Weyoun In the siege of Cardassia Prime in āWhat You Leave Behind,ā Garak gets to be the one to shoot Weyoun 8 after the two chirp at each other first. Turns out this is the last of the Weyoun clones, which Garak has firmly put to rest as the Federation ousts the Dominion forces from Cardassia. Garakās story finally complete, his exile has ended in time to return to the ashes.
ā
Worst moments
Nothing to look forward to but having lunch with you Weāll also see later in the series that Garak isnāt one to prioritize his mental health, so his abuse of his feel-good wire in the titular āThe Wireā portrays how bad he is at taking care of himself or getting help when he is at his lowest points. When he attacks his friend and doctor when heās going through withdrawal, you just wanna see him get better because this isnāt healthy, Garak.
Initiating counterinsurgency program level four Though Garak apparently has access codes that no doubt Sisko revoked after āCivil Defense,ā he still utterly fails to stop the stationās counterinsurgency program from locking out the Starfleet personnel. In fact, per the āAttention Bajoran Workersā protocol, heās made things that much worse by insisting they have to shut down life support only for a laser ball to replicate in Ops.
You canāt waterboard a goo Itās hardest for us to forgive Garak from ruthlessly torturing Odo in āThe Die Is Castā just to get back in the good graces of Daddy Tainā¦ but weāll probably do so anyway. We see just what Garak is capable of with these glimpses into his Obsidian Order past. We can absolutely easily picture how he could torment someone with just his unblinking stare. His eyes. HIS EYES!
But have you consideredā¦ murder? I may have found it adorable for Garak and Bashir to play spies in āOur Man Bashir,ā but he has no idea how holoprograms work. Garak is so fast to jump to the conclusion that they kill everyone that it leaves oneās head spinning. This isnāt real-life spying, Garak. This is Julianās sexy adventure, so of course the answer is seduction, not murder, and you shouldāve known that.
Is this a date or an assassination? Ziyal is looking for company and invites Garak to sunbathe on rocks like the lizards they areā¦ and Garak spends the whole of āFor the Causeā caught up in highschool drama of what Ziyalās inventions are. Does she like him or LIKE him? Or does she just want to lure him in to present his head to her father later? Itās all below Garak, frankly, when he could just, I dunno, talk to her.
Something swift and painless and preferably bloodless I gave Quark most of the stink for this one, but I canāt let Garak off the hook either. Itās a complete missed opportunity for āBody Partsā to necessitate Quark asking Garak to assassinate him when instead he could have enrolled Garak into some even more nefarious scheme. Garak himself should have suggested faking Quarkās death and it would have been excellent.
Theyāre dead. Youāre dead. Cardassia is dead. I always found Garakās plan in āBroken Linkā to be tenuous at best and contrived at worst. He tags along to the Gamma Quadrant for seemingly no reason, then it turns out he wants to ask the Founders if any of the Cardassians from āThe Die Is Castā are still alive (a possibility never alluded to before), then he straight up tries to destroy the Foundersā planet until Worf beats him into submission. Huh?
It looks like Iāve captured your last piece, Chief The pretty decent horror episode āEmpok Norā has got a lot going for it, but every single time they made the kotra metaphor more and more blatant, I started checking out. Dear writers, your metaphor stood on its own without you announcing it twenty-five times. Have a little confidence that your themes are working because it was a good oneā¦ until it wasnāt.
Do you feel lucky? Do ya, Chief? But that is far from the worst thing Garak does in āEmpok Nor.ā The psychotropic drug is mostly at fault here, but that doesnāt mean Garak feels completely innocent. He straight up murders the Cardassian sleeper guards AND crewman Amaro in cold blood, and then kidnaps and threatens Nog so he can get at the Chief, taunting him like a serial killer the whole time.
Star-crossed lizards The sweet friendship Garak strikes up with Ziyal belongs on our good list for sure, but frankly the romance between them never quite gelled for us. We see in āCall to Armsā that they kiss goodbye when she flees the station before the Dominion swoops in, and it just feelsā¦ unearned? Garak admits in āSacrifice of Angelsā that he doesnāt know what that was all about, and neither do we.
When the devil asks you to dance, you say yes I may have marveled at Garakās precarious plan in āIn the Pale Moonlight,ā but that doesnāt mean I condone any of it. Even the writers make it clear in Siskoās actions that he finds it reprehensible how many casualties there were to pull it off: the cold-blooded murder of Vreenak (and his innocent guards!), the assassination of Grathon Tolar, the deaths of literally all of Garakās contacts. This oneās on Siskoās list too of course, but he at least knows itās wrong.
Youāre not worthy of the name Dax One final episode thatās on both lists. Classic Garak, playing both sides. In this case, itās more evidence that Garak does not seem to value his mental health because, when heās suffering panic attacks and more claustrophobia in āAfterimage,ā the first thing he does is lash out at his therapist, Ezri Dax, who certainly doesnāt deserve it! The poor thing.
ā
Well I hope we got in some cutting remarks about the good tailor of Deep Space Nine. Next week weāve got another frequent guest star of the station to spotlight: Keiko OāBrien! Stay tuned for that while also tuning in every week as we venture through Enterprise over on SoundCloud or wherever you podcast. You can also quip with us over on Facebook and Twitter, and remember: the truth is usually just an excuse for a lack of imagination.

Do you love a character with a good redemption arc? Or a corruption arc? Or even just seeing the kind of storylines that emerge from a character who was formerly aligned with an enemy side decide to join a different one?
Then welcome to...
The Turncoat Tournament!
This is a tournament for characters who have changed sides at some point in the story. It can be from good to bad, bad to good, or from one morally ambiguous side to a different morally ambiguous side, as long as the change in allegiance is still clear. Characters can change sides multiple times, and ultimately end up returning to their original side, and still qualify for the tournament!
Due to the subject of the tournament itself being inherently spoiler-y, I will by default not be tagging posts with spoiler warnings. However, below I do have a list of all the pieces of media that have characters in the tournament; if you see something on this list that you do want spoiler tagged, please let me know, and Iāll start tagging it with spoiler warnings!
