Having feelings about my son Nog again
I don’t care if he’s a Ferengi and was therefore more protected on Terok Nor compared to the Bojarians, that boy is a child of the occupation.
Like imagine spending all your most formative years watching bar fights, cruel Cardassians punish and kill defenseless Bajorians, terrorist attacks, and all the other abhorrent things that went on in that place. I’m sure Quark, Rom, and maybe some of the other employees would try to keep him from seeing most of it but there’s only so much they can do in a place as bad as Terok Nor.
Like no wonder he’s the way he is in the beginning! Honestly I’d expect him to have acted out even more. Theft was probably a good way to make sure his family could make it to the next day sometimes and having someone so small to fit in a ton a places would have been very helpful for smuggling. It makes me super curious about the depth of Nog and Odos relationship specifically cause as committed as Odo is to proper justice he is not heartless. I can imagine Nog and Quark got away with a lot during the occupation like they do in the main story.
This all just makes me love them all even more but especially Nog 😭
We need more fics on this stuff and by god I might just write them myself!

Edit: it appears this is an excerpt from Strange New Worlds, Volume 3, an anthology of fan written Trek short stories, which was titled “The Bottom Line”

I think Nog is a better Wesley because Wesley was on the Enterprise just because his mom was here & after a couple episodes of showing how smart he is he’s assigned brig duty & gets to man the helm even tho he has no actual training. The other junior officers on the Enterprise worked very hard in the academy & in their previous assignments to get station on the Federation’s flagship. They spent the required 4 years at the academy, worked hard for good grades, spent the months or years after their graduation working hard to prove themselves & be recognized in their postings after the academy & finally ended up on the Enterprise. I can imagine how exciting that would be for them. Their hard work finally pays off! Then some kid with no formal training who’s mom is the CMO & old friends with the Captain gets to man the helm & becomes acting ensign pretty quickly too. If I were them I’d be very annoyed. The other officers worked hard to be there, Wesley didn’t & then to add insult to injury Wesley didn’t even stay in they academy when he finally enrolled & left to become a traveler after acting very immature. I’m not a big Wesley fan but I’m trying not to be biased. I’m not mad at Wesley for choosing a different path in life, that’s his right, but he was so annoying about it & from the standpoint of the ensigns & lieutenants who watched him take what could have been their spot on the bridge & throw it away it’d be infuriating. It would have made more sense for Wesley to work with & shadow other members of the crew & form good relationships with them as he learned. I know he was a prodigy but I can’t help but doubt that this teenager knew more about Starfleet & starship regulations & how to work one better than the lieutenants, lieutenant commanders, & commanders that worked hard for many years to get a posting on the Enterprise. Making him a know it all doesn’t make him likeable, making him a good learner & earnest to do better does. If a character isn’t allowed to grow their not relatable or very likable & the best way to get a character to grow is to make them fail & mess up but get up, learn from their mistake, & do better. That unfortunately wasn’t an opportunity that Wesley was given & if he was given that I’m sure he would be more likable. Nog however did get that chance & watching his character change & develop is one of my favorite parts of DS9. Watching Jake teach him how to read & Nog wanting to learn even if he acts like he doesn’t gives us a view into how committed he is not only to his education but more importantly to his friendship with Jake. It’s their friendship that really pushed him to grow. He learned machines from watching & helping his dad. Watching his dad he also learned that sometimes the pursuit of profit just leads you to a life of disappointment & failure if you don’t have the lobs. He knows he doesn’t have the lobs. However with the federation on the station he’s been able to get a glimpse of another way of life that will give his life meaning. He’ll be able to make something of himself even if it’s not how a traditional Ferengi would. His family certainly isn’t traditional anyway so why not. He works hard to prove himself & get that letter of recommendation & endorsement from Sisko. He studies hard for his tests to pass them. In the academy he works hard to prove himself & learn as much as he can. When he comes back to DS9 it’s under field training & as a cadet. He’s treated as a cadet too. He’s not in charge of assignments that should be done by senior staff or actual graduates. He’s taught by the crew of DS9 how things work in a field setting & in emergencies he’s allowed to help out with bigger jobs but someone is often with him to help. Not all the time of course because you don’t always have that luxury in a battle scenario but most of the time he’s not left with a huge job & burden to do all alone. When he gets field promoted to ensign it’s because he really deserves it, same with his promotion to lieutenant. Nog had real character growth & I think that’s what makes him a better Wesley.
I think in every way, Nog ended up being everything that Gene Roddenberry envisioned Wesley Crusher to be. Or rather, how he wanted fans to respond to him. Not that I dislike Wes in the least, just Nog ended up being such an amazing story.
