We should really appreciate the variety in pupae more.

Like, here we have flies doing the absolute bare minimum. It's just a pod. Fly grows inside a pod, that's it.

Butterfly chrysalises seem to have the same minimalism...but then you look closely, and can see the future butterfly parts are all outlined.

And then you have beetles just making a whole balloon animal shape to grow into.

An Lucanus cervus stagbeetle from germany. I found him today afternoon on an area with open grass, some forest and an tiny appletree orchard on the lakeside near from my home.

He was confused and very stiff but alive. I put him on an appletree near then.

I found an female beetle fron the lucanus family on Monday too.

Stagbeetle aka „ Hirschkäfer“ are native to found in my region but, rare too. Also there life as adult beetle are so short within the period from May - early August. 🥺

very impressive creature! we’ve got some cool bugs where I live in the US, but my L. capreolus stag beetles are pretty tiny and boring compared to the ones down south… but I think even L. elaphus isn’t much of a match for L. cervus!

also, it’s nice but overly mammal-centric imo that all their latin names refer to three different types of deer (roe, elk, ‘cervus’ is general deer/stag but probably meant red deer)

His first name may refer to Cleisthenes was an ancient Athenian lawgiver credited with reforming the constitution of ancient Athens and setting it on a democratic footing in 508 BC which refering he is a lawyer and it could be from Demosthenes which is a politician that accuses someone else about corruption which impifies Thenes accuses his own moirail for corrupting corrupting money.

His back name is from the name of Aegeus which is a founder of Athenians insitution and is the founder of Athens city. Athens is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy which is created by Cleisthenes. For these accomplishments, historians refer to him as The father of Athenian democracy which might be reffering to him trying to add a new law in the whole Alternia which is about justifying the lower bloods but this make the higherbloods despise him alot. His back name might also be from Aegus which is a genus of stag beetles which has similiar pincers with his horns or can be refering his lusus which is also a beetle.
