25 Meaningful Tweets Commemorating The Anniversary Of George Floyd’s Death
Jaron BryantMay 25, 2021
Today marks the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death (May 25).
Many have taken to social media to honor and pay tribute to the man who has been credited with changing the world.
Some referenced the work we still need to do to make sure George Floyd’s death was not in vain, while other tweets focused on urging Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act, which aims to combat police misconduct, excessive force, and racial bias in policing.
The Floyd family visited the White House today to talk with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris about police reform.
Hopefully, these conversations and actions will result in some true change.
Below are 25 meaningful tweets commemorating the anniversary of George Floyd’s death:
It’s been a year since those horrifying 8 minutes and 46 seconds stole George Floyd’s life. Today, I am thinking of this clip of his daughter Gianna, and all the young people out there who have seen so much, but refuse to give up hope. pic.twitter.com/VclaQksyso— Michelle Obama (@MichelleObama) May 25, 2021
George Floyd was murdered one year ago today. Since then, hundreds more Americans have died in encounters with police—parents, sons, daughters, friends taken from us far too soon. But the last year has also given us reasons to hope.— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) May 25, 2021
Today, we honor the legacy of George Floyd. We pray for continued healing for his loved ones, as we work to dismantle systems built on injustice and inhumanity.— Stacey Abrams (@staceyabrams) May 25, 2021
Today the President and I met with the family of Mr. George Floyd.— Vice President Kamala Harris (@VP) May 25, 2021
Today is the one year commemoration of George Floyd’s death. Let’s honor his legacy by raising our voices for police reform so marginalized minorities won’t have to endure the unbearable pain suffered by George. Urge Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act!— Ben Crump (@AttorneyCrump) May 25, 2021
Today marks one year since George Floyd’s death. Yes Derek Chauvin was convicted of his murder, but justice has not been served. There is much more work to do. #BlackLivesMatter— Chelsea Handler (@chelseahandler) May 25, 2021

One year since George Floyd lost his life and the world woke up to the injustice that black people have known existed all along.  And until we find justice, the fight will continue. #NoJusticeNoPeace pic.twitter.com/VJl3zkBEqs— Mari Copeny (@LittleMissFlint) May 25, 2021
His name was George Floyd. He was a father, a brother, a son, a friend. He died on the streets of Minneapolis with the knee of a police officer on his neck one year ago today—an image that haunts me to this day.— Senator Dick Durbin (@SenatorDurbin) May 25, 2021
George Floyd should be alive right now. One year after his murder, it falls to each of us to answer last summer’s powerful call to action by bringing real reform and accountability to our justice system and confronting racism and inequity in every part of our society.— Secretary Pete Buttigieg (@SecretaryPete) May 25, 2021
One year ago George Floyd called for his "mama" again and again, while being murdered, and awoke our country. A reminder the work is not done, it is only beginning. Stay engaged!— Amy Siskind ????️‍???? (@Amy_Siskind) May 25, 2021
Today, I’m sharing photos that capture joyful moments in George Floyd’s life.  Images of Black death flood our timelines daily. This is your reminder to celebrate and hold close moments of Black joy. Our skin is not a crime. It is the robe of nation builders. pic.twitter.com/4NHKsPORRY— Ayanna Pressley (@AyannaPressley) May 25, 2021
#GeorgeFloyd should be with us today, but we will continue to demand a reimagining of public safety in his memory. Too many Black lives have been lost to a system that refuses to recognize their dignity and worth. We can’t let up on our calls for justice. https://t.co/1JeMpZQvHg— Danielle Panabaker (@dpanabaker) May 25, 2021

All my love to the George Floyd family on the anniversary of his death. Their tireless work in his honor for policing reform will be what made all the difference when it happens. One year ago today, George Floyd was murdered. His death catapulted America into necessary accountability.  We’ve made progress. But there is still so much work left to be done. Keep talking, keep sharing, keep listening, keep loving. Never get tired of doing good.— Emmanuel Acho (@EmmanuelAcho) May 25, 2021

Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd. He did it in public.  For 9 min and 29 seconds.  In front of a camera. Believing there’d be no consequence. Congress must end qualified immunity.— Nina Turner (@ninaturner) May 25, 2021
Rest in peace, George Floyd. You were NOT a martyr. You were a bright man taken too soon by corruption. We continue to live our lives honoring you and the many others who should not have left us when they did. The fight never ends but I hope you know peace now. ✊????❤️— ΩMEGA JONES. (@CriticalBard) May 25, 2021
The George Floyd #JusticeInPolicing Act, which has now passed twice in the House, is an opportunity to honor his life and all lives taken by the scourge of racial injustice. We remain hopeful that we will, in a bipartisan spirit, reach an agreement and enact this legislation.— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) May 25, 2021
We're calling on the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. George's blood is on this legislation, so make it MEANINGFUL. pic.twitter.com/C8133eKZHf— Ben Crump (@AttorneyCrump) May 25, 2021
Rest in power Mr. Floyd! Your name will forever resonate in the hearts and minds of humans with compassion, heart, and integrity.

So
@staceyabrams
— who actually understands the realities and logistics of elections — stands with Biden and shoots down these silly convention fantasies.
So are you going to listen to and vote like Black women or was that just a slogan you retweeted?
You better listen to us if you know it’s good for you

Twitter reacts to Derek Chauvin being found guilty for the murder of George Floyd
On Tuesday (April 20), Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
On Tuesday (April 20), Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all three counts for the murder of George Floyd. The former cop is now convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
The 12-person jury — which was made up of six white people, four Black people and two multiracial people — concluded their deliberations on Tuesday (April 20) after hearing closing arguments from the prosecution and defense. After the verdict was read, Chauvin was taken away in handcuffs. His bond has been revoked and Judge Peter Cahill said that his sentencing will be held eight weeks from now.
Actress Kerry Washington took to Twitter to share her thoughts on Chauvin’s trial. “A guilty #verdict,” she wrote. “But this fight for justice is not over. We have a lot of work to do. There is more fight ahead of us. But RIGHT NOW please take CARE of yourself. And let’s take care of each other. Prayers and love to the family of #GeorgeFloyd.”

“The jury’s verdict delivers accountability for Derek Chauvin, but not justice for George Floyd,” tweeted Bernie Sanders. “Real justice for him and too many others can only happen when we build a nation that fundamentally respects the human dignity of every person.”

White House Correspondent April Ryan wrote, “Historic Verdict: GUILTY on all three charges! This trial will have lasting implications on policing. And now, Derek Chauvin will go to prison and face the justice that many others weren’t afforded at the hands of bad cops like him. Justice has been served! #DerekChauvinTrial.”
