MY TEACHER – HIS VISION AND MISSION PART – 1
Dr Ramya Krishnan
I am proud to share about my teacher since who I am and what I am today is totally due to him. I want to share about him as an introductory note and later I will narrate in detail how he shaped not only myself but thousands of students associated with him.
My teacher was born in an orthodox family in south India. His parents belong to middle class family but of course with very good educational background. Their family had earned respects and reverence in the native village for generations for truthfulness, trust worthy, harmonious to all, spiritually profound and with helping tendency to all in the village. His father worked in the health department as inspector and respected by all officials up to director level in the Government. So depending on the need such an honest official was transferred to almost different districts (right from Kanyakumari to Dharmapuri) every year, (totally 13 schools during eleven years schooling). Their family was a small one with our teacher’s mother who had studied up to 10th standard in her family village and one younger sister. During those years of the earlier 60s school syllabus and portion were not common throughout the state and were different in each district with many private publication text books prescribed.
Language books were only common. Because of the residential locations being at remote village health centre quarters only Tamil (regional language) medium was available.
Parents guided English language with Wren and Martin grammer book and other literature works. Fortunately the school final 3 years up to eleventh standard was at Hosur Dharmapuri district. He could get good scores at school final along with distinguished participation in foot ball games at district level, NCC state level and other such competitions as extracurricular activities. The experience obtained in different schools, teachers, head masters and peer students was very much informative and knowledgeable for him and made his aptitude to become a teacher then itself.
After pre University course (English Medium) he appeared for interview to Engineering course at REC Tiruchirappalli and was denied admission because of his community. However he got admission at Karnataka. His physics professor Sri L.K.Krishnamurthi at St.Joseph’s college advised him to study B.Sc., Physics at Bishop Heber college under professor of excellence Sri Ramakrishnan. That professor could help all tamil medium students (at school level) by taking personal care and as he was a bachelor spent walking with students from college up to Cauvery river bridge, get them tea and snacks and explain the nuances of university education with all modern approaches, contemporary developments, biography of scientists and research methodology concepts and how fundamental theoretical research is being carried out in our motherland and at foreign universities. These had strong impressions in the young mind of my teacher and it was strengthened by the support given by his Principal Dr. Satgurudoss.
On the convocation day party this principal gave one chalk piece to my teacher as personal gift and blessed him to become a good teacher knowing his aspirations. Through Madras University students skill development programme my teacher got selected for training at BHEL Trichy training centre and was offered a position as permanent employment there itself on completion of training with good scales of pay. But professor Ramakrishnan strongly advised to continue M.Sc., special electronics course at Jamal Mohamed College. Dr.Razak the HOD, professor Renganathan and others were very helpful and made my teacher learn lots of research oriented projects. He was sent to Annamalai University Mechanical Engineering Department for Solar Energy related projects and he could innovatively build models and became a life member in Solar Energy Society India and was an active member in the Environmental Research Group under the guidance of Dr.Balasubramanian of Pondicheri University and Dr. Krishnamoorthy of the then newly formed Bharathidasan University.
My teacher got selected for State Bank of India clerical post and he joined the same due to financial constraints. He was not satisfied with the work culture of bank due to his academic interests. After one year, to continue his ambitions on educational lines he applied for B.Ed ., degree and took long leave and was wandering in the villages of Maharastra states for weeks together in search of his future course of actions. He met many sadhus and divinely fakirs at Satara, Shiridi, Rishikesh and finally at Pandarpur he could meet His Holliness Sri Shankaracharya of Kanchi Sri Chandrasekara Saraswathi. He conclusively guided him after keeping my teacher for about 10days with Him said, become a good physics teacher. After informing his parents he returned to Bank and tendered his resignation.
Mr. Venkatarangan a social reformer, teacher and prominent educationist with reverence took my master to Swami Chidbhavananda and Swami Nityananda of Sri Ramakrishna Tapovanam Tirupparaithurai Tiruchy district. HHSwamijis immediately gave appointment as PG Teacher physics in the Aided School at Tiruchirappalli under their governance.
Mr. Ramamurthi Iyer the great head master started fine tuning my teacher by introducing all methods for excelling as a devoted teacher. In the initial years he used to observe from the window side almost all the classes of my teacher and pinpoint in the evening how to improve the presentation, modulation pronunciation, time management, keeping up with syllabus scheduled etc. Being young and just learnt post graduation with specialization my teacher was exited to outpour what all he knew to the students so he was struggling to finish lessons in time. Always borrowing classes from others. Answer paper valuation was very much cumbersome. Head master could know the psychology and started bringing out the significance of the same and this could made my teacher an all round expert in the field of teaching within five years of service. Another innovative model introduced by that great headmaster was allowing (rather compelling) the PG teachers to handle at least one unit from 6th standard and to continue in higher classes with the promoted students. Every year he used to ask the PG teachers to prepare lesson organization for each topic right from primary class introduction, what when which where sequences in secondary levels and why and how aspects in higher secondary level. This made the subject expertise and the knowledge about the levels of children, learning capacity, learning outcome , and learning objectives, extended learning etc through comparative studies of both state board and central board curriculum. Due to his initiation my teacher could attend lots of workshops , vocational training conducted by state level authorities, Max Mullar Bhavan etc. M.Ed degree was also done with the guidance of the affectionate head master. Knowing the thirst for research work of my teacher he allowed him to qualify for M.Phil degree through part time ( allowing him to attend week end classes). At this point of time again the taste of doing fundamental research got kindled in my teacher by the great professors of physics Dr.Sabesan and Dr.Dhanalakshmi. They could identify the inherent zeal in my teachers aptitude and attitude to do real and committed work in the chosen field. They helped him learn digital signal processing, Fourier transforms and spectroscopy from eminent professors of MIT and Anna University. Dr. CV Sooryanarayana an emirutus professor in the field of acoustics and ultrasonics could accept my teacher as his research scholar and guided him. The school management was helping my teacher in all ways since by that time he had established himself as a best teacher producing not only centum results but also state rank holders in his subject. Dr, Dhanalakshmi admitted my teacher as a PhD researcher under her guidance through Bharathidasan University in the field of liquid state physics.
