“The capacity to be able to decipher the writing on that rolled-up piece of silver is extraordinary. This is something that’s only possible now with modern technology.

If they’d found it 100 years ago they wouldn’t have known what it was. Silver amulets are probably going to contain some kind of magical scroll but you don’t know what – it could be any religion.”

He added:

“You’ve got evidence of Christian communities in more central parts of the empire but not in a frontier town like that in Roman Germany so that is very unusual, well it’s unique. You’re pushing the history of Christianity in that region back.”

So a mission goes wrong and the reader is hurt so they obviously have to remove some of their clothing to treat him and they are shocked when they find many scars on the reader’s body. They decide to ask them about it when he wakes up. Once the reader wakes up and sees his body wrapped in bandages, he panics and has a panic attack because he knows they know about his scars now. One of the family member comes in and calms him down, and once’s he’s calm, they ask about how he got these scars. The reader knows he can’t keep lying anymore so he reluctantly tells them. His backstory is like Damians and cass. His father has a clan of his own and he trained the reader from birth to be the best assassin in the world. His punishments and training were harsher than Damian’s even. But he ran away from all that when he was 10. By the time he finishes the rest of the family is there and heard everything, he just breaks down crying again and the whole family now comforts him, telling him he’s safe now. The batfamily at first didn’t know it was him but during a mission that was orders by the villain that corrupted him, to kill Althea (your oc) but Althea got away with injures but saw his face and told her mom and her mom told bats. So with this new information the batfamily were more devastated . With the help of the justice league the batfamily are in a show down with the reader, somewhere near a cliff and they fight and while also talking about their memories together. Reader was too powerful though and restrains everyone with use his electricity. His eyes are red and with dead eyes he walks towards any batfamily member of your choice and was about to deliver the final blow before the bat member looks at them and says ‘ I love you, my son/little brother’ reader hesitates and his eyes widens and filled with tears, the red disappearing. He’s of course confused and disoriented, he steps back and not notices the cliff. His mind coming back to me as he slowly lets his restaions of the others disappear. He steps back near the cliff and looks back into the abyss and back at his family and friends. With regret and a messed up mind right now thinking he won’t be forgiven, he purposely steps back and fall down the cliff. No one was fast enough to stop his fall and he dies. They retrieve his body and they’re just depressed and stuff for a while hut Damian won’t allow his only little sibling to die and takes his body to talia and he gets revived back. when he brings unconscious reader back, the batfamily are upset at him for doing a dangerous act but happy that it went well. How about Batfam x male reader, where reader is Russian and has a slight accent, unless someone really pissed him off, that's when it really shows. Reader is always eloquent and kind, and you don't notice his accent unless you are really paying attention to the way he says certain words, but after a few galas where a fat businessman keeps insulting him somehow, and Damian or Jason are trying to defend Reader, but Reader just tells them no. When the fat businessman insults his brothers, Reader finally snaps and just goes full blown Michael Blackson Teacher style roast on him and his entire family in front of everyone, even his Russian accent comes out (I just think it would be funnier with the accent). After the gala is done, Bruce tries to scold the reader, but everyone is constantly trying to contain their laughter except Jason, as Reader finally snapping is the funniest thing that ever happened at a gala. Even Alfred can't bring himself to scold Reader for what he has done because he was there.

An amazing question! And one that various people actually asked throughout at least the 19th century.

I've read an early French source (translated) wondering why more women didn't adopt the "coiffure a la Titus" trend- think Curly Pixie Cut -because their hair would just be up if it was long, anyway. I've read dress reformers in the Victorian era wondering something similar. I've read one particular late 19th century man who seems to have had some sort of fetish- to my mind -expounding about the glories of women with approximately shoulder-length hair.

And yet, with a very few exceptions, most women historically...did not do that. Even if they had to do physical labor in the fields and such.

I really couldn't tell you why. I have a few theories, ranging from Biblical guidance in a letter from St. Paul saying that women should have long hair (though realistically, that doesn't seem to be something anybody brought up often as the reason they had or admired long hair- it mostly comes up against various short-hair trends that tended to be brief and isolated until the 1920s) to just long-held beauty standards. For one thing, various ways of dressing long hair pinned up went in and out of fashion, and served as a means of self-expression even for working-class people. For another, the idea of letting one's hair down for a spouse or lover as an expression of sensuality/intimacy carried a LOT of weight in many times and places- you can't do that if it's not long.

Personally, when asked why I have very long hair if I just wear it up, my answer is pretty much that: I can't pin it up in ways I like if it's not long, and I enjoy taking it down as a way to relax (and when I'm in a relationship, to express intimacy and comfort around my partner).

Tragic news has rocked Hollywood. Hours ago, newlywed singers - Dymond Joy and Titus Rawkis - were the victims of a home invasion. The assaultant was none other than Titus's ex-wife, Gina Rawkis.

Lieutenant Vivian Tabit of the Del Sol Police Department spoke to the press a minute ago. That statement is written in part below:

"At 6pm, Del Sol officers removed Ms. Gina Rawkis from the home of Mrs. Joy Ray-Rawkis - professionally known as Dymond Joy. Upon her removal, officers confiscated a 22 revolver with nine empty shells in the chamber. Mrs. Ray-Rawkis - who is currently seven months pregnant - was shot twice in the chest, and once in the shoulder. She is currently in St. Wayne Memorial Hospital undergoing surgery. Mr. Titus Rawkis was shot three times: once in the abdomen, once in the shoulder, and once in the arm. Ms. Rawkis also sustained injuries. Whether they were before she shot the couple or during the scuffle over the weapon with Mr. Rawkis, we have yet to discover. "At this time, we have not obtained how Ms. Rawkis broke into Mrs. Ray's condominium. We are combing over the scene, and will discover the truth. As of now, we ask the public to respect the privacy of all involved."

As for privacy, fans are already in rage in online communities. Titus - who recently released his debut album, Tidalwave - is receiving well wishes, and promises that "karma will get Gina for what she did." Dymond's fans are praying for her and her child. The singer's song "SunRay" - a tribute to her late father - has suddenly skyrocketed on the charts, with fanatics relating to the ballad more.

Titus's rep has said he will hold a conference as soon as he's up to it. Gina's attorneys are also set to put out a statement. The lawyers are quoted as saying:

"We will be sharing the truth. We only hope Mr. Rawkis will do the same. He knows what is right and what is wrong."

Okay but here's the problem, Paul is not against ritual law. What are baptism and marriage and the Lord's Supper but rituals? Circumcision is not just a ritual, but an ethnic one. And divorcing Judaism from that ethnic relation is exactly what causes people to misunderstand Paul. There is a reason he insists that Timothy (who's mother is a Jew) get circumcised: it is a part of his culture. There is a reason Titus does not get circumcised: it is not a part of his. What Paul is trying to do is avoid one culture superseding over another, similar to St. Ambrose's "When in Rome" concept; that is a deeply Pauline philosophical idea. Unfortunately, as St Peter warned in his first letter, those who don't understand Paul (because Paul is brilliant and thus complicated) or are simply racists (he didn't say that; I'm adding that) will misconstrue Paul to be something he never was.

One thing Paul never was about, was the erasure of culture. The preservation of cultural and ethnic differences is central to the gospel. Jesus is not King of "Jewish people and their converts" or "American people and their assimilates" or "Greek people and theirs" or going on for infinity. Jesus is King over every nation, tongue, and ethnicity. Bringing their glory, as John the Visionary wrote, to the New Jerusalem when Heaven meets Earth.

Tl;dr: The multi-ethnic family of God. That's what it's all about. Stop being racist.

Pecunia non olet

When the Roman emperor Vespasian reinstated Nero's very unpopular tax on the distribution of urinals' waste, sometime around 70 AD, his son and heir, Titus, complained about it, thinking it was vile and disingenuous. Vespasian shoved a golden coin under his nose and asked the young fool if he still felt offended about it. Pecunia non olet - money doesn't smell, son. This very gold comes from, well, urine. Live with it.

I once comforted a whole orphanage, in Moulmein, Burma, for three weeks, with about 500 well-spent US dollars, at the local bazaar and shops. From rice to fruits to the strange, exuberant vegetables of the Tropics, meat and eggs and chocolate, and for good measure, aspirin, band-aid, antiseptic wipes, notebooks, pencils, socks, shoes, Tshirts, skirts and trousers. Filled three rickshaws with all the boxes and bags and went for it. The St Joseph orphanage was run by five formidable Anglo-Indian nuns, who took care of about 40 children, aged 5 to 16, whose parents died in the horrendous floods that followed the Nargis cyclone, in 2008. They had nothing. When they asked me who I was, I honestly told them it did not matter. Non nobis, Domine, non nobis.

Make no mistake. I am not a saint. I smoke like a chimney and swear like a drunken sailor and sometimes have to professionally, elegantly lie, because such is the nature of my job. I am cynical and short-tempered and yes, less impatient now than at 20. That day in Moulmein will always shine bright in my mind and in my heart for its absurd joy. And also for the feeling the real generosity was not mine, that day, but theirs.

Last week-end, about 200 women I would probably find perfectly insufferable paid from 2000 to 5000 US dollars each, to meet and greet and fawn and take #silly pictures with three guys who happen to be part of the cast of a certain TV series. With only one of them, in reality, but let's not trouble the waters. Apparently, they had a good time. I am not sure about the guy: he's not exactly the Svengali type. I very much doubt that this event will go down in history. It was as good as it gets, with the people it could attract. Entitled? Maybe. Sad? A bit, if you ask me. But above and beyond all of this, it was transactional. I pay, you drop by. I pay, you take a pic and smile. I pay, I ask a stupid question. I pay, we have a dram. For our mutual benefit.

I have no idea if these people maxed out their credit cards to be there. In theory, this is all about disposable income, cash that can and will be well... disposed of, somehow, whether it's a horrendous pair of mauve shoes or the last gadget or hey, a meet and greet. If I were Marie Kondo, I'd even dare say that parting with cash brought them joy.

Can we compare the two moments? Of course not. But both of them are the result of a (hopefully fully aware) choice.

It's been a long while I also chose to never set foot in such places, for such things. Not my circus, not my monkeys.

Stating the opposite is pure hypocrisy and pearl-clutching.

Saint Titus Brandsma

1881-1942

Feast Day: July 27

Patronage: Catholic Journalist, tobacconist, Friesland

Saint Titus Brandsma was a Carmelite martyr at the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. He had a Doctorate in Philosophy, taught at various universities and was an advisor to Catholic journalists. He was imprisoned for speaking against the spread of Nazism, defending the right to freedom in education and the Catholic press. While in prison, he comforted his fellow prisoners by showing them goodness, love, and peace, even asking them to pray for their jailers. He died from a fatal injection during a “medical experiment”.

SAINTS OF THE DAY (January 26)

On January 26, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the liturgical memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus, close companions of the Apostle Paul and bishops of the Catholic Church in its earliest days.

Both men received letters from St. Paul, which are included in the New Testament.

Pope Benedict XVI discussed these early bishops during a general audience on 13 December 2006, noting “their readiness to take on various offices in far from easy circumstances."

The Pope said that "both saints teach us to serve the Gospel with generosity, realizing that this also entails a service to the Church herself.”

The son of a Jewish mother and a non-Jewish father, Timothy came from Lystra in present-day Turkey.

His mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois, are known to have joined the Church.

Timothy himself is described as a student of Sacred Scripture from his youth.

After St. Paul’s visit to Timothy’s home region of Lycaonia, around the year 51, the young man joined the apostle and accompanied him in his travels.

After religious strife forced Paul to leave the city of Berea, Timothy remained to help the local church.

Paul later sent him to Thessalonica to help the Church during a period of persecution.

The two met up again in Corinth, and Timothy eventually journeyed to Macedonia on Paul’s behalf.

Problems in the Corinthian Church brought Timothy back for a time, after which he joined Paul and accompanied the apostle in subsequent travels.

Like Paul, Timothy endured a period of imprisonment in the course of his missionary work. His release is mentioned in the New Testament Epistle to the Hebrews.

Around the year 64, Timothy became the first bishop of the Church of Ephesus.

During that same year, he received the first of two surviving letters from St. Paul.

The second, written the next year, urges Timothy to visit St. Paul in Rome, where he was imprisoned before his martyrdom.

Ancient sources state that St. Timothy followed his mentor in dying as a martyr for the faith.

In the year 93, during his leadership of the Church in Ephesus, he took a stand against the worship of idols and was consequently killed by a mob.

The pagan festival he was protesting was held on January 22, and this date was preserved as St. Timothy’s memorial in the Christian East.

In contrast with Timothy’s partial Jewish descent and early Biblical studies, St. Titus – who was born into a pagan family – is said to have studied Greek philosophy and poetry in his early years.

However, he pursued a life of virtue and purportedly had a prophetic dream that caused him to begin reading the Hebrew Scriptures.

According to tradition, Titus journeyed to Jerusalem and witnessed the preaching of Christ during the Lord’s ministry on earth.

Only later, however – after the conversion of St. Paul and the beginning of his ministry – did Titus receive baptism from the apostle, who called the pagan convert his “true child in our common faith.”

St. Paul was not only Titus’ spiritual father but also depended on his convert as an assistant and interpreter.

Titus accompanied Paul to the Apostolic Council of Jerusalem during the year 51 and was later sent to the Corinthian Church on two occasions.

After the end of Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome, the apostle ordained Titus as the Bishop of Crete.

Paul sent his only surviving letter to Titus around the year 64, giving instructions in pastoral ministry to his disciple as he prepared to meet up with him in the Greek city of Nicopolis.

Titus evangelized the region of Dalmatia in modern Croatia before returning to Crete.

Titus is credited with leading the Church of Crete well into his 90s, overturning paganism and promoting the faith through his prayers and preaching.

Unlike St. Timothy, St. Titus was not martyred, but died peacefully in old age.

Shakespeare Weekend

This weekend we look at Shakespeare’s first tragedy, Titus Andronicus the thirty-third volume of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940. The play was written between 1588 and 1593 and published three times in quarto before being included in the 1623 First Folio. Known as Shakespeare’s most violent and bloody play, Titus Andronicus was met with criticism throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries before regaining interest in the 20th century, culminating in Julie Taymor's quirky 1999 film adaptation Titus. Nevertheless, the play is still regarded as one of Shakespeare's most reviled plays. 

Nikolai Fyodorovich Lapshin (1891-1942) illustrated the LEC’s edition of Titus Andronicus with his fresco-esque paintings. Lapshin was born in St. Petersburg and was a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists and was known for his watercolor landscapes and numerous children's book illustrations. His muddied scenes depicted throughout Titus Andronicus wonderfully capture the dolor and violence of the play set against a Roman landscape. To preserve Lapshin’s bold brush strokes and nuanced layers, LEC reproduced his images for the publication through chromolithography. The resulting depth and drama of the illustrations perfectly assist readers in imagining the grisly tragedies of the play. 

The volume was printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish. Each of the LEC volumes of Shakespeare’s works are illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

I came across this painting on tiktok earlier and tracked it down and I can't stop staring. I don't know why it's so captivating, I'm usually not even this into art. I just want to keep staring at it. There's two versions of the painting I could find, one with really vibrant colours and the other tuned down but both are gorgeous.

The painting, "Pallas Athene" is by Rembrandt and one of his pupils from circa 1657. It's gorgeous and I want it in my house immediately. It belongs to the collection of Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. It's an oil painting, the colours are so gorgeous to me. Looking at the painting closer, it radiates with Rembrandt's love of ancient weapons.

The background of the painting is relatively interesting. There's theories that the pose and appearance of the goddess is based off of Rembrandt's son, Titus Van Rijn. If I look at her face closer, I can definitely see the androgyne. Catherine II of Russia, ever the woman of taste, bought it from Paris and later gave it to her lover before being transferred to a museum and then bought through an art dealer by the current owner.

There's debate on the theme, date and origin of the artwork. Although nowadays, it's pretty much agreed it's by Rembrandt and one of his students. I think that might by part of why I like it. The mix of student and master levels of art into one. It's so. Gods. I can't describe it. There's two main theories I could find after my surface level search. One is that it was made to celebrate Saint Luke. The other that it was part of a trio of paintings, however looking at them (Juno and Venus), I don't think that's the case. The style is too different. I won't offer an art analysis since I'm not good at those things but there are some facisnating ones. They all definitely agree on the androgyne of the figure, which is further proven by another debated aspect of the painting: the name. Not everybody agrees that it is Athena in the painting, some think it is Alexander The Great or Titus himself. Alternative names for the painting include "Portrait of Alexander in the Armor of Pallas", "Mars", "Portrait of Titus" and "Young Warrior".

I might rant about this painting more but gods, I think it's one of my new favourites.
