"We mustn’t forget that Conrad Veidt was a German, and at that time, with the war just starting, it was difficult for him. I think he always felt faintly embarrassed by the fact that he’d been a German star and had a very ripe German accent. Very cleverly Emeric made him not a German in Contraband. He was just as believable being a Dane, and that was charming."--Valerie Hobson, Emeric Pressburger: The Life and Death of a Screenwriter by Kevin MacDonald

CARSTOBER 2023 - Day 12
Favourite Spy: Rod "Torque" Redline
Second drawing of my boy Rod for this Carstober, this time I had more time to plan a better and more complex drawing, so I chose to draw him being cornered by two bad guys (not the Lemons though, this is meant to be him in one of his missions before the events of Cars 2) and preparing himself to fight back 😎
Tumblr media
Also, Finn is close second as favourite spy, but I decided not to draw him here bc it wouldn't make sense for him to be in a scenario like this with Rod since they never interacted with each other even in the movie
Anyway, hope you like it ☺️

So I am officially obsessed with The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. It’s my new favorite movie or like say in the top 5. It’s in my I will never tire of rewatching list. And I am in love. The cinematography is great and I think I just love Guy Ritchie’s style. It was absolutely a silly spy movie but seriously they all are silly and that’s why I love them. Henry and Armie or Solo and Illya have the best banter. I also don’t know what it is about Guy Ritchie films but his main characters have to stop seeming like they are going to be in love by the end of the movie and then not being in love. (Sherlock Holmes I’m looking at you too). The plot was less important than the characters imo and I think that’s where this movie shines. Highlighting the 3 main characters and how they end up completing, or not, their missions.
I could just go on for days about this movie. I don’t even have any real complaints, which is rare. The only complaint I have is Solo and Illya don’t get together in the end and that’s not really a real complaint. It’s just me having silly headcanons.
Rewatching I noticed little things that were to clues to later parts of the film that you wouldn’t notice the first time and that was so fun. This movie has everything I love in a spy movie. It’s so good. It deserves way more love and attention than it’s gotten. I don’t know why more people are singing it’s praises and falling in love with this beautiful work of art.

Side note: the show from the ‘60’s stars David McCallum as Illya, who also plays Ducky on NCIS and that brings me a lot of joy even though I haven’t seen the show as of yet. But I love David and Ducky.
Post updated with a few gifs. Also anyone who loved White Collar should love this movie as Solo and Neal basically are the same person. Solo just has a little more danger skills.
