Huge Policy Change of Vaccine Administration in India??

Triggered by the highly inflaming second wave of Covid-19 virus infection spread, India has announced huge change in their policy of administering Covid 19 Vaccines by permitting individual state authorities to directly buy vaccines from various manufacturing companies and thereby cutting the free-vaccine policy. India who are the second largest population on the planet, is currently undergoing heavy spread (circa 400,000 reported infections per day with around 4,000 casualties per day) of the deadly virus and the government is forced to implement strict measures in order to control it.

Major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Lucknow, Ajmer, Ranchi have already declared full or partial lockdowns in order to curb the spread. The test positivity of some the areas are as high as 50%. A Local news channel from the southern city, Cochin has quoted the District administration head as “strict measures are taken for the safety and security of the people. From 3rd May 2021 onwards strict restrictions, almost equivalent to lockdown has been declared. Heavy infected areas are classified as containment zones and are under complete lock down. Some area’s situation is alarming as the test positivity is more than 50%. However, the vaccine shortage is one of the hurdles and we have urged the central government to provide more dosages. Meantime, the state government has decided to use the Russian made Sputnik also in addition to the Indian made Astra Zenecca and Covaxine.”

Meanwhile, huge campaigns were going on in the Social media against the exporting of Indian made vaccines and the Central Government decision to use other vaccines and to import more variants is to be read along with it.

What Next for Countries without vaccine production centers??

It is evident that the countries who doesn’t produce vaccine has to wait a bit more. Being the major vaccine producers in the world, India’s decision to temporarily stop the export of vaccine will definitely affect these countries including Kenya. However, it is time to think about the alternatives.

Zydus Cadila Agrees To Reduce Covid Vaccine Price To Rs 265 Per Dose

Zydus Cadila agree to reduce price of its vaccine dose. Zydus Cadila has agree to bring down the price of its COVID-19 vaccine to Rs 265 a dose. It is following persistent negotiations by the government. But a final deal is yet to  reach, sources said on Sunday. Zydus Cadila's ZyCov-D is the first vaccine clear by India's drug regulator for inoculation of those age 12 years and above.

To administer the needle-free vaccine, a disposable painless jet applicator costing Rs 93 is require for each dose, which would take the price to Rs 358 per dose.

The Ahmedabad-based pharma company earlier had propose a price of Rs 1,900 for its three-dose regimen, sources said. "The company has brought down the price to Rs 358 for each dose which includes Rs 93, the cost of a disposable jet applicator, following repeats negotiations by the government. A final decision in the matter is likely to be take this week," a source in the know of developments said. The three doses are to be administer 28 days apart, with each dose comprising a shot in both arms. The indigenously develops world's first DNA-based needle-free COVID-19 vaccine. ZyCoV-D received emergency use authorization from the drug regulator on August 20. Meanwhile, the government is still waiting for the recommendations from the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI). It is for introducing ZyCoV-D in the inoculation drive for adults and children with co-morbidities. NTAGI will provide the protocol and framework for the introduction of this vaccine in the COVID-19 immunization drive. Official sources earlier had said that the pricing of ZyCoV-D would be different from that of Covaxin and Covishield. As apart from being a three-dose vaccine, it requires a special pharma jet injector that has to be used for administering the vaccine. That pharma jet injector can be used for administering around 20,000 doses. "The jet applicator helps the vaccine fluid to penetrate the skin to enter cells of the recipient," the source said. Zydus Cadila can provide around two crore doses in November, a source had said. The government is currently procuring two other vaccines. Covishield at Rs 205 per dose and Covaxin at Rs 215 per dose for the national COVID-19 immunization program. Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V give to only those above 18 years of age. Unlike ZyCoV-D, these are two-dose regimens. India has administer more than 106 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine so far.

Countrywide Vaccination Drive

The countrywide vaccination drive was roll out on January 16 with healthcare workers getting inoculate in the first phase. The vaccination of frontline workers started from February 2. The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination commence from March 1 for people over 60 years of age. Those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions. The country launch vaccination for all people aged more than 45 years from April 1. Leading US Vaccine Scientist Explains Why Sputnik V Beats Pfizer Against Omicron

Russia’s Sputnik V excels at stimulating durable antibody producing cells, a prominent US researcher said citing a fresh study

Sputnik V produces a better neutralizing antibody response to Omicron than the mRNA vaccines, Professor Hildegund Ertl, one of the top US vaccine specialists, said, according to a statement posted on Sputnik V Twitter page on Monday.

The vaccine and immunotherapy researcher working at the Wistar Institute located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, believes that the Russian jab’s adenoviral vector provides for a “far longer” expression of antigen than any of the mRNA vaccines. This results in “stimulation of durable antibody-secreting cells,” the statement said.

“Overall, these results are extremely promising,” professor Ertl said while commenting on the results of a fresh comparative study presented by a joint Russian-Italian team working at the Spallanzani Institute, Italy's leading research institute for infectious diseases. The team published a preprint of the study last week.

The researchers at the Spallanzani Institute studied the serum samples from individuals vaccinated with Sputnik V and Pfizer and found that the Russian jab produces twice as high level of virus neutralizing antibodies against Omicron as the US vaccine, which, in turn, means better protection against the virus.

“Among all samples, 74.2% of Sputnik V-vaccinated sera were able to neutralize Omicron vs 56.9% for Pfizer-vaccinated,” RDIF said in a statement, citing the study results.

It is also said that the Russian jab demonstrates a significantly smaller reduction of the virus neutralizing activity against Omicron in comparison to the original Covid-19 strain. Sputnik V shows a roughly eightfold reduction in its effectiveness against the new strain, while the Pfizer/BioNTech jab is 21 times less effective.

Professor Ertl is one of the leading researchers behind the development of vaccines for a wide range of diseases, including Covid-19, AIDS, chronic viral infection and even some forms of cancer. She believes that the disparities in the virus neutralizing response demonstrated by the two jabs might “reflect differences in the antigen structure and duration of its expression.”

She also pointed to the fact that Sputnik V produced high antibody titers against the original “wild” Covid-19 strain, which remains stable for six months after vaccination, while the protection level induced by the mRNA vaccines declined by 10 times over the same period.

The Italian study’s results have also been welcomed by Ancha Baranova, a molecular biology specialist at the George Mason University’s Institute for Biohealth Innovation.

According to Baranova, Sputnik V provides a wider pool of antibodies to the spike protein than the vaccines used in the US. The molecular biologist explained that American vaccine developers artificially changed the configuration of the Covid-19 spike protein for their vaccines, thus making them capable of producing antibodies narrowly tailored to it.

Such changes made these vaccines less effective at detecting and neutralizing Omicron, which has a highly mutated spike protein and is capable of evading immune response to a certain extent.

Sputnik V’s researchers did not introduce any specific changes into the Covid-19 protein used in their vaccine. That, in turn, provided for a more “diverse” antibody response, Baranova explained, adding that the immune system of those vaccinated with Sputnik V produces “more various antibody types,” thus increasing a chance of successful virus neutralization.

Alexander Gintsburg, the head of the Gamaleya National Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, has praised the results of the joint study that researchers from his center conducted with the Italian specialists. He said these results confirm the data obtained by his team in a separate study published in late 2021, adding that “hard scientific data proves Sputnik V has higher virus neutralizing activity against Omicron as compared to other vaccines.”

Os desenvolvedores da vacina contra a Covid-19, Sputnik V, afirmaram, nesta quinta-feira, 29, que irão processar a Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa) por difamação. Em uma postagem feita nas redes sociais, o laboratório afirma que a agência reguladora brasileira espalhou “informações falsas e imprecisas intencionalmente”. “Após a admissão do regulador brasileiro Anvisa de que não testou a vacina Sputnik V, a Sputnik V está iniciando um processo judicial de difamação no Brasil contra a Anvisa por espalhar informações falsas e imprecisas intencionalmente”, diz a publicação.
