rockabilly songwriter dies in city
springfield leader and press springfield, missouri sunday, august 30, 1981
songwriter and entertainer ronald "ronnie" self, whose 1950s song, "i'm sorry," spurred singer brenda lee to stardom, died friday night in springfield
self's brother, sammy, called him "the first rockabilly to come out of nashville" in the 1950s, but a host of his songs from that era have resurfaced at the top of music charts across europe.
self, a 43-year-old springfield native, was pronounced dead at cox medical center after he was taken there by springfield paramedics. greene county coroner erwin f. busiek, who determined the cause of death over the telephone, said he presumed the incident was due to natural causes. he said self had a history of heart trouble.
busiek said he did not order an autopsy because he didn't think there was evidence of foul play.
"just say, it was his time, and ronnie didn't want to face reality, he didn't want to see anybody," said sammy self, who was his brother's legal guardian, personal manager and chairman of the board of self inc.
self's most well-known hit, "i'm sorry," sold three million copies for miss lee, a former springfieldian. other hits included "sweet nothings, "eventually," "everybody loves me but you" and "sweet, impossible you."
billy walker recorded his "anybody but me" and "circumstances," and burl ives recorded several of his songs, including "mother wouldn't do that."
sammy estimated his brother had written and recorded about 3,000 songs in his career, which began during the '50s.
besides being a songwriter, self was an entertainer in his own right, said si siman, owner of earl barton music co. in springfield.
"he had some hits himself in rock 'n' roll, when he first started out in columbia records," siman said saturday. "he was on his way to becoming a rock 'n' roll star when he traveled with the old phillip morris caravan shows, which sponsored country and rock 'n' roll singers in the '50s and '60s.
"then, he decided he'd settle for a writing career. he turned around and wrote ‘i’m sorry' he wrote a lot of big hits like "two six packs, to go, recorded by hank thompsons.
"he and i went into publishing together about in the ‘70s. we called it tablerock music. i was the publisher and he was the writer." it was some time later that self pulled out of the enterprise.
"he said, t'm sorry, splittin' time. gotta' seek the wilds,' and off he went, siman said. the two kept in touch casually over the years.
siman said of the performer: "he was a very temperamental star but a great writer and a great performer, and i mean he could have been one of the world's best. he was just a sensational writer.
he said he knew of self's history of heart trouble, adding. "he's had some hair-raising experiences. he had a major auto wreck once in tennessee. he was in the hospital the better part of six months.”
another longtime friend, rusty archer, said he met self when he was just starting his career
"he was a good entertainer. he and wayne carson (a well-known springfield musician) used to work a lot together when they were first getting started," said archer, owner of country palace in springfield.
"he was just a nice guy." archer said. "at one time, he was awful close to the top of his profession. he was a whale of a songwriter, then he kind of slacked off.
"he was out the other night and said he was working on some new stuff. he'd just been to nashville. he said he was thinking about forming a corporation and bringing back all the stuff he had out. he said he'd get back in touch with me when he did."
self's recordings are currently undergoing a revival in england and other parts of europe, according to ben shriver, an owner of the hitchin' post where self's sister, vicki, is a lead female vocalist. another sister, dena, performs at the country palace.
"lloyd hicks, one of the drummers who has played in a lot of big bands, told me he bought one of ronnie's albums in england and paid $25 for it. it's-an early collector's item," siman said.
sammy self, 37, said several songs from his old album "ronnie self," including "ain't i’m a dog," and "flame of love," had hit no. 5 on the music charts in london and were selling even bigger in belgium.
after learning of his music's comeback in europe, self said his brother told him, "we might as well go over there and stand where winston churchill did and say something... if we can find a cigar big enough."
"ronnie was very original and prolific," sammy said.
he said he probably would re-release several of his late brother's songs due to the comeback. he said he also had about 100 melodies that his brother had written recently.
"he didn't want anybody to have 'em, he didn't want to go out in public with 'em," sammy said. "he said, 'all they'd do is put 'em in a can and wait till i'm dead.'
"that was my brother," sammy said.
"it's always a tendency, when someone is local, not to realize how well-known they are," archer said, "when you see 'em every day, you have a tendency not to think about how good they are at what they do. that was the way with ronnie."

Dear Gus & Magnus,
Some months ago, I became infatuated with a Chappell Roan song called "Pink Pony Club," and I listened to it enough times around the house that I heard Gus singing it to himself when the song wasn't even playing. Then we introduced it to Mom, who also liked it, so we made it our Choate Family Song for a while -- and maybe it still is? Anyway, when I found out Chappell was on tour and making a stop at her hometown in Springfield, I bought tickets for Mom and me to go. We considered taking Gus since he likes the song so much, but ultimately decided against it so we could get some time away to ourselves.
The show was fantastic and we sat a few rows up in the balcony from Chappell's parents, with a clear view of her grandparents, which was a fascinating way to see a pop show. Instead of opening bands, the openers were drag queens and the crowd -- most of whom were dressed like they were at the Pink Pony Club -- went absolutely wild. The show was at once wholesome and edgy, and the crowd was incredibly positive/supportive of everyone on stage as well as everyone in the crowd. Unlike any show I've ever been to.
Dad.

youtube

Springfield’s Sequiota Park, once a Fish Hatchery
Springfield’s Sequiota Park, once a Fish Hatchery
Domino Danzero photograph, circa 1922, of his family picnicking at Sequiota Park. In spite of changes in name, ownership, and utilization, the cave and spring at Sequiota Park still retain a natural ambience that visitors find picturesque. In 2011 the Springfield-Greene County Park Board held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of a $1.8 million “facelift to the much-needed natural water…

Vandivort-Style Cashew Chicken, Beetroot Tartare, Carrot Fromage Bleu, Steelhead Trout Special, Paris Breast (Shared All). The Order. Springfield, Missouri. 3.7.2023.
NOTE TO SELF: This will not be a top-ten meal for the year, but it was solid. The meal peaked at the cashew chicken and the whipped Humboldt Fog cheese, but the beetroot tartare and carrots were a nice complement. The pastry was a little too European for me -- stale bread texture with too-sugary icing.
Currently ranked 1st of 11 March meals.

This is a Buc-ees. A gigantic convenience store and gas station. They originated in Texas and everything is bigger in Texas.
I’ve never seen a convenience store with shopping carts.
Mmmm. Fudge. I’m saving that for the return trip.
