Peoria’s first roundabout: in Springdale Cemetery.
Welcome to a simple grassway around an elevated circle (made of concrete? Stone?) surrounding an obelisk within Springdale Cemetery. It’s a different sort of traffic circle. No cars, for one. No road signs either—and you can stop wherever you want. Not as long as residents of the immediate area, to be sure, but long enough to regroup, maybe pose for a photograph. It’s obvious where to ride or…

Exploring Springdale Cemetery
While researching the previous post, I was introduced to Springdale Cemetery. Springdale Cemetery is a very large, very old cemetery about 20 minutes from where we are staying. Jeremy went with John Paul and I to check out it while we were looking for Dr. George Zeller’s grave for the previous post on this blog and we were not ready for this cemetery at all. Even with directions to the gravesite,…

Collected on This Day in 1884
by Mason Heberling
Tumblr media
Not all plants have leaves.  Beech drops (Epifagus virginiana) is one such example.
This specimen was collected on November 16, 1884 growing on the root of a beech tree (Fagus grandifolia) at the back of a cemetery in Allegheny county. The specimen was collected by John Shafer, who a decade later became the first curator of botany at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
Beech drops is a parasitic plant – rather than having leaves to photosynthesize, the species produces root-like structures (called haustorium) that parasitizes roots of beech trees.
The genus “Epifagus” refers to this parasitism on beech (“epi”= upon; “fagus” = beech).
Beech drops are in the  broomrape family (Orobanchaceae), which is comprised mostly of parisitic plants. Check out the beautiful, distinctive purple and white flowers in late summer to autumn.

Botanists at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History share digital specimens from the herbarium on dates they were collected. They have embarked on a three-year project to digitize nearly 190,000 plant specimens collected in the region, making images and other data publicly available online. This effort is part of the Mid-Atlantic Megalopolis Project (mamdigitization.org), a network of thirteen herbaria spanning the densely populated urban corridor from Washington, D.C. to New York City to achieve a greater understanding of our urban areas, including the unique industrial and environmental history of the greater Pittsburgh region. This project is made possible by the National Science Foundation under grant no. 1801022.

Our first Con
Well, friends-- we made it.
Our first CON.
For those of you who didn’t get the opportunity to attend, we here at the Riverland’s Podcast found ourselves a the Dark History and Horror Con 2022 in Champaign Urbana.
I’m not sure you’ve ever attended a horror convention before but its was absolutely fantastic and I very highly recommend you make a point of coming to join us next year.
We had the opportunity see an amazing assortment of artists, musicians and actors wandering around the event including a double pare of identical twins -- highlighted by the Harp Sisters.
As someone from out here in The Riverland’s, my most surreal moment has got to be walking across the parking lot of the hotel and seeing Edward Furlong, the actor known for his work in 1991′s Terminator 2, portraying John Conner.
I’m not one for celebrity worship, but it was certainly strange for someone like myself who just doesn’t experience that type of thing often. My favorite by far was drinking in the hotel bar with the other podcasters of “Podcast Row” and looking over to see former pro-wrestler R A Mihailoff aka Leatherface, and from Krampus: The Devil Returns --- And folks, he really is that big.
But more importantly, we got the chance to talk to you. To introduce ourselves first hand to a whole new group of folks who might not have had the chance to hear our stories, but most certainly were excited to know we exist.
And most exciting for us?
Getting to know some of you -- people who have the experiences. Those folks who love horror and love the supernatural and who have brushes with all the weird stuff that happens out here. Those of you who were kind enough to drop by and tell us about your favorite local haunt.
The Infamous Ashmore Estates.
Airtight Bridge.
Springdale Cemetery
.... and many many locations too numerous to list.
Thank you all so much and we look forward to seeing you next year in Champaign-Urbana’s during the next Dark History and Horror Con where we will have a whole new crop of stories for you.
And dont forget to drop by and tell us about your favorite haunted location.

Riding with Robert. 30 days of biking, #14
If you spend most of your riding time out on the grid north of Dunlap, you learn several things when you ride inside the city of Peoria with Robert: 1. Central Illinois is hilly. 2. Bricks and loose gravel are perfectly acceptable road surfaces. 3. You can ride a bicycle for an hour without leaving city limits. 4. You can ride a bicycle for an hour without seeing a cornfield. Or a soybean…

A selection of mausoleums from the local historic cemetery from the walk I took there last night. Several have had their doorways updated with trompe l'oeil paintings....can you tell which ones?
