The shuttles and the pods began a firefight in which the Phalanx's surprise gave them the advantage. The Griever army slowly shrunk, but the wrecks of the shuttles crashed into the skyscrapers and caused even more damage. But at least humanity had had a chance to survive.
Luke watched it all with a shocked expression on his face and then turned to us >> That's enough, you've messed up enough. << and walked back towards me with his sword.
>> That's enough now. Before you hurt yourself. << someone called out from Luke's shuttle. It had been the gruff voice I had heard in the recordings on the ship, and Becka seemed to have recognized it as well.
A male Griever in a white robe stepped out slowly and flipped his large hood back. Miran looked older than us, but younger than he should've been. His hair was still deep black, with no sign of a single gray hair. But his face had several scars, scars from the war on Aurora.
>> Step aside, good-for-nothing. << he ordered Luke as he continued to walk towards us. Confused, but respectful, he took a step to the side and let Miran through, who came to a halt a meter or two away from me.
>> You've given me a real headache, Empath. If it hadn't been so difficult to get into your head, I would have erased your memory long ago. And now this. <<
>> Excuse me, but where did you come from all of a sudden? << Luke intervened.
Miran turned his head slightly to the side >> I was in your shuttle the whole time. You just didn't see me because I didn't let you. <<
>> Yes, all well and good, but I don't think you should be here. <<
Now he turned completely to Luke >> I decide where I can and can't be. And you should have listened to my advice better. <<
Luke looked at him puzzled and slowly walked towards him >> I had trusted him. <<
>> And where did your trust get you? <<
I extended the middle part of my sword again and stood ready. Becka noticed this and also extended the middle part of her sword. >> I'm sorry, but what are you doing here? << Luke then asked.
Without saying anything, Miran grabbed Luke by his vest and lifted him up with one hand. All our eyes widened and I even stepped backwards.
>> I'm here to sort something out. And you're interrupting me. <<
Before Luke could respond, Miran threw him across the park. He landed somewhere behind the trees, but I couldn't see him. The sound of his landing was also drowned out by the noise above us, which made me sick with worry.
>> And now for you two. << Miran said menacingly and came towards us. Becka activated her blade, but she had been too slow and Miran had already grabbed her from behind. Before he threw her backwards, I realized that it wasn't Becka who was too slow, but Miran who was too fast. There was something wrong with him and I had the feeling that Markus hadn't told me everything.
Becka wasn't thrown far, instead she rolled a few meters behind us on the grass until she came to a stop. Then Miran turned back to me. Panicked, I clutched my sword with both hands and activated my blade, even though I feared it wouldn't be enough.
Miran took a deep breath and calmed down >> You know what? We can still save all of this. Our people may be splitting, but we can still turn the situation around. <<
I took up a fighting stance >> Why should I work with you? <<
He tilted his head for a moment >> Reveal our secret to everyone? That was a good move. I want to team up with you because unlike your friend, you have something on your mind. <<
I charged at him and swung for his neck. But I missed. Miran dodged to the side in a flash and stood there with his arms behind his back. As I straightened up again, I saw his eyes light up briefly. >> I know you can't influence me. But you're not going to persuade me anyway. <<
With a disappointed look on his face, he ran at me, but I lashed out again, hoping to catch him. But he dodged every one of my blows and grabbed my arm with which I was holding my sword. He then spoke to me calmly >> We can still save the future of our people. <<
His features were completely serious. I could forget to use my empathy against him, but it hadn't been necessary. You could see the pain in him. >> Yes, we can. << I answered him calmly >> But not like this. <<
I dropped the sword in my other hand and struck at his neck again. He let go of my arm again and stumbled backwards. At the end of the swing, I picked up the sword again with my other hand and slashed down at him from above. I was sure I could finally hit him, but his skin quickly turned to a rock-hard crust and the blade bounced off against it.
Perplexed, I stood there and Miran wiped my legs off the floor with his feet. I closed my eyes and felt my shoulder hit the ground. Footsteps approached quickly and when I opened my eyes, Becka was trying to catch Miran's head with her sword as he stood over me. But instead of dodging, he hardened his hands and held the blade. Then he pulled the sword away from her and threw it behind him. Her astonishment prevented her from reacting and he grabbed her by the neck.
>> No! << I shouted and pushed myself up as fast as I could. Then I reached out from underneath and cut off his arm, as the crust had already disappeared. Blood shot out of his arm, but he showed no reaction. Just a mock astonished face and within seconds his arm grew back.
Miran chuckled mockingly >> How cute. But now let's all come to our senses. <<
Desperate, Becka kicked at Miran, but he simply grabbed her foot and pushed her backwards so that she fell onto her back.
>> We could have asked the humans for asylum. << I then said, trying to talk some sense into Miran himself.
He lifted his chin a little >> I will not show weakness in front of these insects. And I certainly won't explain the mistakes of my ancestors to them. <<
I retracted the blade again >> The humans would have helped. None of this would have been necessary. <<
>> The humans are poisoning their own planet, as my people did on Aurora. << He paused for a moment and took an indignant breath >> I will not allow history to repeat itself. <<
>> We could have told the humans about it. So that they could learn from it and we could help them. <<
Miran became horrified and started to speak up, his eyes lighting up again >> The humans are the same as my people were. I can change everything. We will not have to live with this shame and we will raise this planet again. This will be our new Aurora, even better than the real one and this time it won't go down in global disasters! <<
He was no longer in control of himself and a shockwave emanated from his hands, throwing me backwards. I lost my grip on the sword in flight and couldn't follow him with my gaze. My entire focus was on the pain in my stomach and the pressure I felt as I hit the ground. My vision blurred immediately and I felt dizzy. I started to see everything double and triple as Miran then approached me.
When he was close enough to me, my dizziness eased and I started to see normally again. But I could hardly move because the pain in my stomach pinned me to the floor. Then he knelt down and put his hand on my shoulder.
>> I was hoping you would understand me. <<
I strained to be able to say something >> And I had no hope left for you. <<
His pitying look quickly distorted into pure rage and he hardened his other hand to slap my face with it. >> Scum. You're jeopardizing our future. An affair with a human. What do you call something like that? <<
He continued to punch me in the face until Becka's voice rang out behind him >> This isn't an affair, you cold-hearted bastard. <<
She slashed along his spine with her sword, but his reaction was the same as with his arm. Only this time he exhaled in annoyance and turned to her. Becka could barely stand upright and had suffered minor injuries to her face. And Miran was ready to end it all for her. Which is why I tried to sit up, but then spat out blood. My nose felt like it had been broken and everything smelled and tasted like iron, which made me feel sick.
Then Luke suddenly appeared behind Miran and rammed my blade into his shoulder from above. He groaned slightly in pain, but then sighed >> When will you finally realize that? You can't kill me. <<
>> Then I'll aim for the head next time. <<
Miran chuckled mockingly >> Have fun with that. <<
The communication device in Luke's watch suddenly spoke up >> All units, immediate abort. We are retreating to the ship. I repeat, immediate retreat. <<
Miran growled angrily >> I hope that wasn't your doing. <<
His eyes slowly lit up again, but there was no further shockwave. Instead, the hilt of Xornud's blade exploded and the blast enveloped Miran's face. Luke was thrown backwards, with one arm less, and the headless body slumped lifelessly to the ground. Blood gushed from his neck and soaked the grass.
Shocked, I pushed myself off the ground and limped over to Luke, who was lying on the ground breathing shallowly. At that moment, I had forgotten everything. I threw myself over him, kneeling down, and carefully held him by his body and head. He was breathing heavily and looked at me disoriented >> Apath. << he whispered >> I did this... For you... << He started coughing.
I started sobbing uncontrollably and couldn't stop myself from crying >> Please. Save your strength. <<
He lifted his hand and stroked my cheek. His palm had already started to get cold >> I'm... I'm sorry. For... Everything. << he whispered softly with the last of his strength, then his hand dropped and his gaze froze.
My eyes went black, but I could still see Becka standing next to us in the corner of my eye. Before I could see nothing but black, I wanted to turn towards her, but then I fell to the side. I could still feel her shaking me and heard her calling my name. I opened my eyes again and saw the Griever shuttles disappear and the Phalanx pods fly off in a different direction. After that, everything was black. And the noise slowly faded in my head.
It had been quiet until a female voice spoke to someone >> This is abnormal. They shouldn't be here. We have to intervene. <<
A male responded >> It's too late. Too much has changed. All we can do now is watch this strand and make sure it doesn't come into contact with others. <<
>> But... <<
>> Do as I said. <<

The noises from the street had suddenly returned. Or they just suddenly appeared because they weren't there before. Jenny looked me in the eye again and then she also noticed the noise from outside, so she got up and ran to the window. Cars were driving through the area with screeching tires and passers-by were running back and forth frantically.
I went over to her and looked outside too, but instead of looking down, I turned my attention upwards. The armada of our army had arrived and it looked like they had followed exactly what I had inadvertently told Luke to do. Then Jenny's phone rang. It was her father >> Dad? <<
The staff officer's voice had been heard softly through the speaker >> Honey. Are you out with James yet? <<
>> No, I didn't want to go with him. <<
>> At least you're not in one of the bases. They've all been destroyed. Please make your way out of Manhattan before the aliens get you. <<
The two were still talking while I noticed a single shuttle fly towards Central Park and land in the middle of it.
I immediately turned to Jenny “ Please do as your father says. And please take care of yourself. “ I told her and ran out the door.
>> Wait, where are you going? <<
I turned around and took on my human form >> I need to talk to a friend one last time. <<
Outside the door, James was still waiting >> Aye, what's your hurry? <<
I simply pushed him aside and ran down the fire escape. The streets were pure chaos. People were all bumping into each other and not caring if anyone fell. Drivers were speeding through the streets, squealing their tires. Some even took garbage cans with them and didn't seem to care about pedestrians either.
I carefully tried to cross the road, avoiding a few cars. They all honked at me as if I had been the problem, forgetting what was buzzing around in their skies. Surprising as it was, the shuttles and warships hadn't fired yet. They were actually just buzzing around Manhattan like vultures, waiting for something.
The park had been empty, not a soul far and wide, so I took on my own shape again. And the closer I got to the center where the shuttle had landed, the slower the shuttles moved in the sky. They had spread out all over Manhattan and were taking up specific positions.
Then I arrived at the shuttle and there were two Grievers. Luke, who was holding Becka and tapping his foot impatiently on the ground >> Looks like you weren't lying. << he said to Becka.
>> Hey, let her go. She's not to blame. This was all me. << I shouted to Luke when I was only a few meters away from him.
>> Oh really? Then why did she publicly reveal secret information from the archives? <<
Becka resisted, but Luke's grip had been too strong. He probably hadn't minded her wriggling around. And to calm her down, he squeezed her arm tighter, causing her to cry out and lose her grip on her legs. I jerked forward, but stopped myself from rushing to her.
>> You must have recovered well from last night. A few scratches are still there, but you seem to be able to move well. <<
>> Come on. You know as well as I do that none of this is necessary. << I called out again.
>> Which one? This meeting or the attack? Thanks for your tactical advice, by the way. The humans really are an easy target. All I have to do is give the command and your beautiful city will be dust and ashes. <<
Becka took advantage of the moment he was distracted and kicked him in the soft parts with her knee. His grip loosened and she was free, but I knew she wouldn't make it far. >> Becka! << I shouted and ran to them. Because before she could hit him in the side of the face, he had caught her with his fist and she fell backwards. I was with him at that moment and activated Xornud's blade. I swung sideways, but Luke dodged backwards and I missed his throat by a little.
>> Nice piece. Did your scaly friends give it to you? <<
I held the sword in front of me with both hands and stood with my legs apart >> Luke, do you really want to serve someone who betrays his own people? <<
>> Miran has been dead for a long time. I serve the military. <<
>> That doesn't make it any better. <<
>> Are you saying that you can't understand why the military kept the truth from everyone? If everyone had known that from the beginning, many would have spoken out against the invasion and we wouldn't have gotten anywhere. <<
>> You are about to wipe out an innocent species. How can you be so blinded? <<
>> I am the deluded one? You would sacrifice yourself for a primitive species that is slaughtering itself . <<
>> And the Grievers didn't have a similar story? <<
He pulled out his hilt and activated his blade >> Just tell me if you've really been my friend all these years . <<
Becka slowly got up and stood next to me. I gave Luke an uncomprehending look.
>> All these years, were my feelings towards you even real? <<
My eyes widened >> Who told you that? <<
>> A telepath from the archives. You probably noticed him too, otherwise you wouldn't have had a headache, would you? <<
My fingers gripped the handle much tighter >> You were just testing me. <<
>> That's the normal procedure when someone is initiated. And you even slipped away from him. <<
I took another swing from above, but Luke stepped aside. Then I tried to hit him from the side, but he took a step back. Suddenly, fighter jets and helicopters appeared in the sky and fired their missiles at the shuttles, but they were repelled by their shields. Fighting vehicles appeared on the streets and shot into the sky, but the bullets had no effect. The humans were hopelessly outgunned by the Grievers.
Then Luke spoke into his radio watch >> Launch the attack. <<
Without hesitation, the air units began shooting at the human machines and the skyscrapers. One shot each was enough to disable the military technology. One missile tore a huge hole in each of the buildings. The guns tore through the defenceless people and their vehicles as if they had never been there.
I quickly took out my own sword hilt and gave it to Becka. Then I charged at Luke again, slashing at him in short bursts. But he blocked every one of my attacks until he had the chance to punch me in the face with his fist. I fell onto the floor with the back of my head. And as long as I was lying there, Luke tried to ram his sword into me, but I rolled to the side. Before I could get up properly, he went straight for the next blow, tearing the earth out of the ground.
The blade had been too heavy for me to lift it up in time to block his blow. But suddenly another blue blade appeared in front of me and stopped Luke's blow. Becka held her sword with all her strength and pushed against its enormous strength. He kept pushing and she had to swipe his blade upwards. But that didn't stop him and he took another sideways swing at Becka. We both took a step backwards and dodged his sword.
A burning jet had been crashing above us and was spinning on its own axis. The ensuing explosion shook the ground and bent the trees with the shockwave.
>> You know what? << Luke then spoke >> I'm not actually here to deal with you two. <<
He tapped something on his watch and walked over to his shuttle. Becka wanted to run after him and stab her blade into his back, but I quickly restrained her. But I quickly regretted that decision, because another shuttle soon appeared behind us and kept its guns on us. I could already hear them charging and saw the plasma light up in the barrel.
Then there was a bang. Something had hit the hull of the shuttle, causing it to start burning. This was followed by two more shots and the shuttle fell to the ground. Its turbines shredded the grass as it skidded sideways along the ground and when it hit a tree, it finally exploded. We all looked up and many smaller, dark gray pods flew towards the Griever air units.

Becka had put on Markus' clothes and equipment, which were taken from him before he was put in his cell. Then, as she took off her watch and strapped his around her wrist, she pressed the home button, which told the ship that she was ready to teleport. We were both outside the ship, where she also took the form of Markus >> How do I look? << she then asked.
I just made a face >> Horrible. <<
She pulled an offended face >> It's not my fault he's so old. Where am I going to meet you? <<
>> I'll wait for you in Central Park. <<
>> Why do you want to go to Manhattan? <<
>> I have something to do there. <<
>> Hey. << Xornud called over from the entrance to the ship >> Wait a minute. <<
He took one of his sword hilts from his belt and handed it to me >> You'll probably need it, whatever you're up to. <<
I took his sword hilt >> Don't you need it yourself? <<
But he shook his head >> We're trying to make our ship fly. The sword won't help much. <<“
>> But it hasn't flown for many years, why would it do that now? <<
He looked around first, then came closer to me >> Not many people know this, but we've been tinkering with this thing for ages. And I'm optimistic that it will fly. We'll give you air support if your military attacks. <<
I took a closer look at the hilt of the sword. The hilt was made of the dark gray steel and felt a little heavier than my own hilt. Then I extended the steel center section where the plasma came from. The shape was a little curved and was actually only one-sided. Only at the end of the blade was there plasma on both sides.
I deactivated the blade and thanked Xornud. He nodded and re-entered the ship. The doors closed behind him. Then I said goodbye to Becka and walked to the train station to take the automated train to Manhattan.
It was now afternoon when I arrived at Jenny's house. People had still been clueless and were going about their lives as if there were no problems. One man even held the door open for me when he wanted to leave the house. There was the kindness of the people. Why was it that there were only such great personalities among the common folk, but as soon as someone had power, they were ready to wipe out an alien species?
I stood outside her door and heard Jenny arguing with someone. I didn't recognize the voice, but to her it was someone she had known for a while. And not in a positive way. I knocked on the door, but the conversation didn't stop. Instead, they continued discussing when Jenny came to the door and opened it. She froze in mid-sentence when she saw me and stared at me open-mouthed.
I smiled embarrassedly >> Hi. <<
The male voice called out from the apartment, snapping Jenny back to reality >> Who's there? <<
She shook her head quickly and stepped aside to let me in. Once inside, I walked further in and saw a man standing in the living room. His brown hair was slicked back and he was wearing a black flight jacket over a white shirt. He looked at me obliquely >> Do we know each other? <<
>> I don't think so. << I held out my hand to him >> I'm Apath, by the way. <<
He didn't accept my handshake >> Cool, I'm James. Sorry, but you came at an inconvenient moment. <<
>> Oh, I heard that outside. <<
James looked at me in surprise and was about to say something, but Jenny took a closer look at my face. I had taken on my human form, but I couldn't hide the wounds. >> What happened to your face? << she asked anxiously.
>> Oh, nothing at all. Just a little fight. <<
>> But it doesn't look very little. <<
>> Pff. You never said that to me. << James muttered under his breath and Jenny gave him a > Are you serious? < look.
Then she turned back to me >> Sorry, Apath. This is my ex. James, this is Apath. We met two months ago. <<
My thinking went out of me and I stood there petrified. My eyes showed fear as I looked at James, but I tried to cover it up.
>> Before or after we broke up? << James asked discontentedly.
>> You know what? I think I'd rather wait outside. << I said and wanted to leave the apartment.
But James declined this offer >> No, why don't you stay here? At least we can both get to know each other now and end this conversation more quickly. <<
>> James. << Jenny appealed.
>> What? I want to make friends with your new boyfriend. I'm allowed to do that, right? << he defended himself and came towards me.
He gently pushed Jenny aside and put his arm over my shoulder >> What are you going to do with her? <<
I just sighed and grabbed my face.
He looked over at Jenny with a smile >> I think we're already getting on well. <<
>> No, you don't. Now get out of here. << Jenny said, completely annoyed.
>> But your father asked me to take you to him. <<
>> Yes, only because he can't ask anyone else and he wanted to recruit you into the military anyway. <<
>> He said it was for your safety. <<
Jenny pulled James away from me and addressed him sternly >> Should I remind you what you told me last time? Why are you worried about my safety now? <<
He pulled his shoulders up innocently >> Because he threatened to give me a second asshole. <<
I looked over at them, distraught. I had taken the staff officer seriously, but that was just terrifying, it sent shivers down my spine. >> That sounds like my father. << she said approvingly >> But why does he want to take me to safety? And where to? <<
>> I have no idea. He told me about some threat that's coming our way soon. That's all he's allowed to say. <<
>> That also sounds like my father. <<
I spoke up cautiously, clearing my throat >> Well, that's why I'm here. <<
They both looked at me intently, James looking at me rather skeptically with one eyebrow raised. I thought about what I should say to make it sound credible. But I got the suspicion that the two of them, or at least James, wouldn't believe me, so I breathed out >> Fuck it, you won't believe my words anyway. << and took on my real form.
They both froze to stone and stared at me with wide eyes. James came back to himself first and asked Jenny >> Did you know that? <<
Instead of saying anything, she shook her head, not believing what was happening. Then James grabbed his head >> Shit. You fucked an alien? <<
>> No... Why does everyone think of that right away? << I said desperately.
James carefully came closer to me and looked at my yellow eyes >> Woah. So that's why they're yellow. I thought you wore contact lenses. <<
I rolled my eyes >> Yeah, great James. Would you mind waiting outside then? I'm really only here to talk to Jenny. <<
>> You want me to leave her alone with you? <<
>> James. Fuck off. << Jenny ordered, to which he gave her a dirty look.
>> James, do what she tells you. <<
>> Else what? Are you going to shove a probe up my ass? <<
I grabbed him by the back of the neck and dragged him to the door. I opened it and kicked him out before closing the door again and turning back to Jenny.
>> I'm sorry, but this can't wait. <<
>> Yes, I can see that. << she replied, crossing her arms.
>> Jenny, I'm here because I don't know if I'll see you again. <<
>> Did you call home and will be picked up soon? <<
>> No, my people want to take your planet. And I actually want to prevent that, but I'm not sure if I'll survive. <<
Her arms loosened and her jaw dropped >> What?! <<
>> I know how that sounds. << I tried to reassure her >> But I really just want to help. <<
She grabbed her head and walked over to her couch, where she sat down. I followed her and sat down next to her.
>> Oh my god. And those two men in black who were here a few days ago, are they real or what? <<
>> Well, they are lizard people... <<
She looked at me, completely stunned. I don't know what was going on in her head, but I would have thought the same thing if I were her.
>> I don't... I don't even know what it's all about. Why were you even here if you have to stop your people? <<
I hesitated at first and grabbed the back of my own neck >> So... I should have gathered information about you humans. <<
She carefully slid away from me and gave me a critical look.
>> But then I got to know you. << I added, looking down at the floor in shame >> You brought me closer to humans. Because of you, I was in conflict with myself at first. But I can understand if you'd rather slap me. <<
>> How did I do that? << she then asked me.
I looked up and looked her in the eye >> You showed me that people are not what they were portrayed to be. You are kind-hearted, open-minded and... loving. And if I'm honest, I've never been happier to have met someone than you. It's been the best two months on earth I've ever had. <<
She slid closer to me again and looked deep into my eyes. Her gaze warmed me somehow. As if something had become complete. This feeling scared me a little because I'd never had it before, but it felt like home. But then she came closer and closer until her lips touched mine. I suddenly lost the feeling of space and time, as if I had been everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

The town was in turmoil. The inhabitants packed their belongings and made their way to other, deeper caves. These had been more difficult to reach and were only used in extreme emergencies. I watched them from an elevated position at the edge of the cave. I actually wanted to head out to the surface and leave them all alone. I had already caused enough trouble with my actions.
I leaned against one of the rotten wooden railings and looked down on the city. It consisted of only a small selection of materials, but it had its own charm. How neatly the houses were arranged and the streets were therefore all laid out in a straight grid structure. And these streets were used by vehicles, all of which drove out of the city center.
With a deep sigh, I took off my watch and looked at it. In the reflection, I could see my injuries on my face. This medicine had eased the pain, but it couldn't close the wounds. I would have found that difficult with these wounds. Then I tilted my watch a little to the side and saw Becka behind me. Startled, I turned around and looked at her >> Becka. I wasn't expecting you here. <<
>> It's okay. << she said, sighing as she leaned against the railing herself >> Do you think that's it now? Either the Grievers or the Phalanx? <<
I leaned again and looked down at the city. There were a lot of vehicles leaving the city, but parts of the army were entering the ship. Then I looked at my watch again. The last reminder that I had served my people and threw it into the depths >> I wish it were different. But I guess not everything can be the way we want it to be. <<
She looked at me from the side >> I thought you were the optimist of the two of us. <<
>> Then what was that last night with you? <<
She exhaled >> I didn't want to believe it. Quite simply. And what about you now? <<
>> Well, I've been living in a fantasy world where I can save everything and everyone without any major consequences. And now I'm here. I can't even save the ones I care about. And I probably won't see my parents again. If they are my parents at all, after the conversation with Markus I'm no longer sure. <<
>> If it makes you feel any better, at least you brought Eriny back home. << she put her hand on my shoulder.
>> Whether he's killed on the ship or on Earth doesn't make much difference now, does it? << I sighed again >> I didn't even say goodbye to Jenny before I was teleported with the lizards. <<
>> Who is Jenny? <<
I looked her in the eye >> It doesn't matter now. <<
She nodded and turned her gaze back down to the city >> What did Luke actually tell you yesterday? <<
>> Well, he had been extremely angry because he thought I was trying to take you away from him. <<
She turned back to me and smiled at me as if I had said something absurd >> Excuse me? <<
>> Oh yeah, I totally forgot. He likes you and he thought I was doing all this because I wanted to appeal to you. <<
She immediately started laughing and couldn't keep it under control >> All this? For me? Wow and I thought there must be a reason why he became a general. <<
When she had calmed her laughter, she looked at me more insightfully >> I'm sorry. I know he's your buddy. <<
>> Was. I don't think he can be soothed again. << I interrupted her.
Silence spread between us. But the city below us remained noisy. It had taken a long time for all the inhabitants to evacuate, if only because of the size of the city. But then something caught my eye. Soldiers had been entering the ship the whole time, but so far not a single one had left.
Then I remembered something >> Do you think I can talk to Markus again? << I asked her.
Becka just looked at me in confusion >> Why do you want to talk to him? <<
I straightened up and walked back to the town >> Come with me. I have an idea. <<
We stood at the entrance to the ship and argued with the guards about letting us in. But they remained stubborn until Xornud appeared and pulled us inside >> Why have you returned? I saw you trying to leave the city. <<
>> Can you take us to Markus? I have an idea how we can still stop the invasion. <<
>> Apath, come on. It's too late. <<
>> I know. But please give us one more chance. <<
>> What are you up to anyway? << he asked me, stopping in the middle of the corridor.
>> I want to ask him a few questions. And Becka, meanwhile, will take his things and his watch to teleport back to the ship. <<
>> And what's the point? <<
>> She reveals the truth of our people to everyone on the ship. <<
He propped his arms on his hips >> It will divide your people. <<
>> Yes, but it will also turn the people against the military. Please, we must try this. <<
Xornud grumbled in annoyance. You could see the discord tearing him apart >> Fine. I'll give you this chance, but if anything goes wrong again, you take the responsibility. <<
I entered Markus' cell, which was much more comfortably furnished than the chambers on the ship. To be honest, you couldn't call it a cell, because it looked like a small apartment, furnished with more or less comfortable furniture. Whether it was actually comfortable or not was hard to say.
Markus was lying on the bed and throwing a ball against the wall until he noticed me and held the ball in his hand >> How can I help you today? <<
I took the chair at his table and sat down on it >> That Miran, I don't think anyone knows he's still alive. <<
>> What did you expect? He doesn't want the public to know about him. Yet everyone is convinced of his disposition. <<
>> That makes sense. I guess I had been naive to expect Luke to listen to me. <<
He started giggling wickedly at first, then laughed at me mockingly >> Did you really talk to your buddy? Shit, I didn't expect that to work. <<
I leaned forward and waited for him to finish laughing, but there seemed to be no end to his laughter. Eventually I'd had enough of it too and stood up. >> You really talked to your friend? How... How did the conversation go? Not as well as you expected, did it? <<
I came over to the bed and knelt down next to him >> Look at me. How do you think it went? << I said to him calmly.
When he looked at me, he started laughing even louder. I stood up and reached for my sword hilt >> Are you kidding me? <<
>> Listen, I didn't expect this myself. <<
>> That doesn't make it any better. The earth is under attack because of you. <<
>> I don't think it's because of me. You talked to him, not me. <<
I took out the hilt and activated the blade, which I held to his throat. But he still seemed very amused by it >> And what good is that going to do you now? <<
But I didn't take the blade away >> I know you can regenerate, but not if your head is missing. <<
His teasing grin slowly faded. >> I know you don't have enough cells to grow a new body. <<
>> But it could grow my head back. <<
>> You mean your body would create a new brain? Without a command from the brain? <<
He exhaled in annoyance and tried to sit up. So I gave him the space and raised the blade a little. >> You don't want to kill me. << he still said.
>> I don't want that. But I didn't want to the first time either. So please explain to me where we both got our abilities from. << I replied and deactivated my blade.
Then Markus sat down on the edge of the bed >> What's the point of answering anyway? You've lost anyway. <<
>> Just answer my question. As my last wish. <<
>> Fair enough. A year after the ship took off, our people found a way to give a Griever abilities. I was one of the first people it worked on. But I didn't get anything more than regeneration. <<
>> Why not? <<
>> They immediately wanted to try to give a newborn as many dangerous abilities as they could. A little shapeshifter baby who got empathy first. <<
I took the chair and sat down on it >> What did they do after that? <<
His lips twitched upwards >> It disappeared. They looked for you for a long time, but they never found you. The superweapon was lost forever. But I think Miran recognized you when you were taken to the archives. <<
> If he recognized me, why did he want me dead? <<
>> It wouldn't have been a good idea to continue with you and then control you telepathically. Too much could go wrong. <<
>> And was this project continued with someone else? <<
He leaned backwards >> From there, the files are black. Anyone who was involved and could reveal anything has lost their memory. Or was never born. <<
>> But not you. <<
He grinned again >> I'm his personal mercenary. <<
Someone knocked on the door and then opened it. Xornud poked his head through >> Apath, your time is up. <<

>> So you're telling me that he's hiding his existence from everyone? <<
Luke looked at me again with concern >> Apath, are you sure you're okay? What happened to you in the lair of those lizards? I mean, you should hear yourself talking. <<
He tried to take me by my arm >> Let's get back to the ship. The doctors should take a closer look at you. <<
But I wiped his hand away from me >> I'm fine. I just want to know what you know about multiple abilities. Was there anything about that in this archive? <<
He tilted his head >> Multiple abilities? That's a perverted fantasy of scientists that will never come true. Where did you pick that up? <<
>> I got it from Markus when he tried to kill me and Becka. He can regenerate. <<
>> So he's still alive. Why did he try to kill you? <<
>> So we wouldn't get in Miran's way. <<
Luke took a step backwards and gave me a startled look >> Get in the way? Are you trying to betray our people? <<
I sighed deeply and hung my head >> We want to prevent people from dying in vain. <<
>> We wipe them out so we can inhabit their planet. It won't be in vain. <<
>> Luke. << I shouted, lifting my head up >> They haven't done anything. They don't even know we exist. <<
>> All the better. That makes it easier for us. <<
Reflexively, I wanted to take a step backwards, but I didn't because I didn't want to irritate Luke >> When did you become so heartless? You used to be caring. <<
>> I've changed for the worse? When did you become so soft? You were so motivated when it was said that we were exterminating the humans. <<
>> That was before I got to know them better and you showed me the truth. <<
He grabbed his head and walked in circles once >> Who poisoned you with that attitude? Don't tell me you convinced Becka of that. << >> I didn't. She had been of that opinion herself. <<
His hands dropped down and he looked at me, dumbfounded >> You're trying to steal her from me. << he then said quietly.
>> Take her from you? How old are you anyway? << I asked him, a little out of control.
>> You were in the military with her for three years. And you're doing all this just to win her over. Tell me about it. What's she like in bed? <<
>> I don't want to take Becka away from you. I have someone else. Besides, you haven't confessed anything to her. I asked her about that. <<
>> And that's why you want her? <<
>> No! Are you actually listening to me? <<
He came towards me again and stood right in front of me >> And who is this other one then? <<
>> Jenny. << I replied without hesitation.
>> I don't know any Jenny. Where did you meet her? <<
I remained silent. I couldn't think of anything to say. That silence told Luke everything. He was instantly disgusted and he took another step backwards >> You're sick. How can you possibly do that? <<
>> Luke. << I exhaled deeply >> Please, listen to me. <<
I walked towards him, but all I felt was a slap in my face. Before I realized the blow, my back was already hitting the cold floor. I had barely opened my eyes when Luke was already on top of me. He grabbed me by my top and lifted me up.
>> Luke, please. << I said desperately, but he punched me in the face again.
>> That was for Becka. <<
I had a taste of iron in my mouth. First I spat out the blood and then I tried to talk to Luke again >> Please, just listen to me. <<
>> You've spoken enough. << He grabbed me by the shoulders and rammed his knee into my stomach >> That was for betraying us. <<
When he let go of me, I fell on my hands and coughed up blood on the floor. Then he kicked me sideways >> And that was for lying to me and taking advantage of me. <<
I laid on my side and my vision blurred with every kick he made. It was getting dark, but I could still hear and, more importantly, feel everything. Then Luke suddenly lifted me up and carried me over to the rock I had been sitting on. My life passed me by because I knew what he was going to do. That would have been the end I had to wait too long for. Far too long before I dared to open my eyes. Luke couldn't bring himself to smash my head against the rock. Something stopped him. Instead of moving, he was breathing deeply and frantically. I couldn't say anything to him myself, as much as I wanted to. But then he just let go of me and went back to his shuttle. >> I won't spare you next time. <<
The shuttle took off and flew back to the ship. I remained lying alone in the tall, cold grass on the cliffs. The wind had become colder and a drop of rain hit my head. With the last of my strength, I rolled onto my back and looked up at the sky. Clouds had appeared along with the colder wind. And before I could realize it, it was raining down on me. The cold rain had been even more unbearable than the already cold wind. But I didn't care. Not even that the rain was making the ground wet and I was lying in the mud.
I didn't even care that my watch was beeping. I looked at why it was making noise and pushed the call away from Becka. But the watch beeped again. It was still Becka and I pushed it away again. It was only the third time that I was annoyed by the sound and took the call >> What's up? << I asked powerlessly.
Becka's voice came out of the clock >> Apath, where are you? Xornud wanted to talk to you, but you weren't in your bed. And what's that static in the background? <<
My voice sounded rough and shaky >> Is it urgent? <<
>> It is now. Please tell us where you are. <<
>> I'll be back soon. << I ended the call and hung up. I laid there a little longer and let the rain drip on me. The pain from the cold water hitting my bruises completely beat me up. I deserved to be punished for my naivety and stupidity. How could I have thought that telling Luke about everything was a good idea? Because of me, me and Becka hadn't been safe.
As soon as I'd hobbled near the sleeping quarters, Becka had come out to meet me. Her face had been full of worry as she looked at my beat up face and spotted the dirt on my clothes >> What happened to you? Where have you been? <<
I answered her in my exhausted voice >> Just take me to Xornud. <<
>> She doesn't need that. << I heard his voice behind Becka. She stepped aside and he stood there with his arms crossed.
>> I actually wanted to talk to you, but you were gone. <<
>> At this hour? <<
He came up to me >> It doesn't matter now. Where have you been? <<
I wanted to take a deep breath, but immediately felt pain >> I was talking to Luke. Thought it would have been a good idea. << I replied, my face contorted with pain.
>> Why did you do that? << Becka asked me in horror.
>> I thought he knew something about the abilities thing. But Miran is keeping everyone in the dark. <<
>> And who disfigured you like that? << Xornud asked.
I laughed slightly hysterically >> Luke. And he said he wouldn't spare me next time. <<
>> You didn't tell him everything, did you? << Becka wanted to know. I didn't answer, instead I looked at her guiltily.
>> For heaven's sake. He even spared you? What are you being fed on the ship? Amphetamines? << Xornud commented.
>> Fuck. What are we going to do now? <<
>> Sorry, but we have to initiate Torx's emergency plan. <<
We both looked at him in shock, to which he just replied >> We told you we'd have to do this if everything went wrong. <<
>> But we don't know if they're really going to attack. << Becka tried to deny this possibility.
I just sighed and looked down at the ground in shame >> I'm afraid they will. Luke didn't seem too happy. He wants me and the humans dead. <<
That night, Xornud initiated the emergency plan and the entire Phalanx army finalized their last preparations. He gave me a few more medicines for my injuries, similar to the ones when we crashed, but with a stronger effect. Not all the pain disappeared, but at least I was able to fall asleep afterwards. But I wished I hadn't. A dream haunted me like a memory. A very old memory that I wasn't supposed to have. But there I was. In a container filled with a liquid. In front of me was a pane of glass and two people who must have been watching me. Their faces were blurred and I couldn't follow their conversation, but I was sure they were talking about me.
Suddenly the liquid began to move and the scene changed rapidly. I was caught in a vortex. Somewhere very deep in the cold sea, with little light. Far in front of me was a submarine that was split in two and slowly sinking downwards. Its individual parts were floating next to it with numerous corpses. And I was about to become one myself.
Below me, where the whirlpool was coming from, a huge swarm of these creatures from my first dream was rising. And there seemed to be an infinite number of them coming out of this hole. There was just no end to it and they shot towards me at high speed. By the time they reached me, I was buckling up wet from my bed.

In the evening we were back in the city and I immediately ran to our night quarters. Xornud tried to stop me >> Apath, take it easy. This is normal for humans. They'll deliberate for a few days and then come to their senses. <<
I turned to him and stopped in the middle of the path >> You know, I had actually been pretty optimistic. I thought people were open-minded, friendly, innocent. God damn it, I thought they were reasonable. More reasonable than our people. <<
>> Well, that's not particularly hard either. << he muttered to himself. >> Why didn't you warn me about this? <<
>> Warn you about it? Shit, I thought you had some sense. Why else would you come to us for help? And now you want to put all the blame on me? <<
I laughed hysterically >> Are you trying to tell me it's my fault for speaking out against Parker? <<
Becka stepped between the two of us and looked me in the eye >> No one here is to blame. We just have to be patient. You said yourself that this all has to work out. <<
>> What if we don't have enough time? <<
>> But the military doesn't know anything about anything here. They think we're still spying on this place. <<
>> But what if they get suspicious about the whole Area 51 thing yesterday? What if Miran suspects why Markus hasn't returned? <<
I paused for a moment and Becka noticed it in my expression >> What is it? << she then asked.
I slowly turned away from he >> I have an idea. Don't wait for me. Xornud can you take me to Markus? <<
>> Apath? << Becka tried to stop me, but I wasn't paying attention to her, I was already running after Xornud.
Xornud had taken me deep into the ship, to an interrogation room where I had to wait. The walls, ceiling and floor were all made of dark gray steel. In the middle was a table with three chairs connected to the floor and a ceiling lamp had been built into the ceiling directly above it. Unlike in Naglfari or the human interrogation rooms, there was no mirror with someone behind it. After only a few minutes, the door opened and Xornud brought in Markus, whose hands he tied to the table. I went to Xornud and whispered quietly in his ear >> Give me a few minutes with him. I'll take care of it. <<
He doubted at first, but then nodded and left us both alone >> Knock on the door, if there's anything. <<
I walked slowly to the table and sat down on the chair opposite Markus, who looked at me sceptically >> Do you want to try again? <<
>> Yes, and you will give me answers. <<
>> Why so sure? <<
>> I'll ask the questions. <<
He laughed suddenly >> That's not like you. You can stop pretending to be threatening. <<
I sighed slowly and folded my hands on the table >> Alright. Why did you fake your death anyway? <<
He laughed again >> Isn't it obvious? 20 years without orders and then we arrive at the planet. Something will go wrong, like someone going rogue. Miran needs a backup like us, his mercenary force. <<
>> And what about your family? <<
He remained quiet for a moment and his face became serious >> I don't have any. Never did. <<
I hesitated for a moment. He had been all lonely on the ship and probably wasn't allowed to bond with anyone so there wouldn't be that pain when he had to leave everything behind.
>> And what about the second ability? << I then asked >> Have you had it all your life too? <<
He started grinning again >> How many years have you spent on the ship? <<
I looked at him questioningly >> 19 auroric years. What does that matter? <<
>> That's how long I've had mine. And if I'm not mistaken, I even saw you back then. <<
>> What? What do you mean by that? <<
All I got in response was this grin >> Ask your parents, if you have any questions. Or ask your buddy, Luke. Maybe he's in on the whole thing too. <<
I looked at him seriously >> There's more to it than that. Why don't you just tell me? <<
>> I'm only telling you what I'm allowed to tell you. <<
I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms >> What does that mean now? <<
He sighed and propped himself up on the table >> We haven't exactly had the best start since you and I met on Earth, but it doesn't have to stay that way. I want a little more neutrality between us. Do you understand? <<
I raised my eyebrow.
>> I'm willing to tell you certain things, but only the ones I won't get in trouble for. You'll have to find out the redacted lines for yourself. <<
>> Well at least I have a clue donor. << I muttered to myself.
He leaned back again, but not too far, because the chains weren't particularly long >> And if I can give you a tip: grow a new pair. <<
>> What? <<
>> I'm just saying. This pacifist way won't get you where you want to go. Trust me, I was convinced of that on Aurora. <<
I stood up and got ready to go to the door >> This isn't Aurora. You can keep your tips to yourself. <<
>> You're right. This is not Aurora. But the people you're up against are from Aurora. If I were you, I'd do what I advise. <<
I ran to the door >> Know-it-all. << I whispered to myself and knocked on the door.
I had tried to sleep, but couldn't. Becka was having trouble with it too, but she was already fast asleep while I was tossing and turning on the bed. I couldn't let go of the conversation with Markus and the excitement in the Pentagon. To make a pre-emptive strike on Naglfari. The guy was out of his mind. To distract myself a little, I looked at my watch. Maybe I could find or change something new. But first I checked my inbox in case I hadn't noticed that there were new orders. But it had been empty. At least one satisfying message that day.
But then I looked at the tracker, which I had switched off on me and Becka. Markus' words immediately came back to me. > Ask your buddy. <
I looked over at Becka and she was still fast asleep. She had even turned her back on me. I had to take advantage of this opportunity before it was too late. Maybe he would understand. Luke had always had a friendly character. If I had chosen the right words, I was sure I could have convinced him.
So I sneaked out of the night quarters and walked to the train. The lights had only been on in a few houses and the streets were empty. There weren't even any soldiers outside. It was similar at the train station. Only a few phalanxes were walking around and the trains had been mostly empty. That worked out well for me when I took a train to the UK. I can't remember exactly where in England. When I left the station there, I first made my way to a deserted field, far away from civilization. I didn't have to walk very long because the station was already close to a very wide, uninhabited meadow. Somewhere near the chalk cliffs, in fact.
sat down on a rock there and switched the tracker back on. Then I contacted Luke to come to my location, but alone and in such a way that no one would notice. I waited for him until then. The now cold wind from the coast brushed through my hair and was actually refreshing after all the commotion. And the best thing was that it was still so early in the morning in England and still so peacefully quiet.
Soon a shuttle appeared over the horizon. It was barely visible because of the darkness and difficult to follow with the naked eye. But the noise of the engines could not be hidden so easily.
The shuttle landed carefully several meters away from me and the ramp opened. The turbines slowed down until they were off and no longer stirred up the wind. Luke frantically ran out and towards me >> Apath, are you alright? <<
I stood up and ran towards him >> Don't worry, everything is fine. << I answered him calmly.
>> Why did you bring me here? And where is Becka? <<
Luke stood right in front of me and looked at me worriedly. I had to take a deep breath >> We've split up. You don't have to worry, really. <<
He exhaled with relief >> If you say so. Do you actually know what's going on with your watches? Yesterday they showed that you traveled several hundred kilometers in a few minutes and then the trackers went out today. <<
I looked him in the eye and thought about how much I wanted to tell him >> I don't know about the first one, but I turned off the trackers myself. <<
He looked at me confused >> Why? <<
>> It's not important now. << I shook my head >> I have a few questions. <<
He looked around uncertainly >> Go ahead. What's up? <<
>> What do you know about Markus? <<
He looked at me cluelessly >> He had no family. And he never came back from the scouting mission. <<
>> Is that so? << I asked insinuatingly and Luke no longer understood me.
>> Yes, it is suspected that the reptiloids have something to do with it. Have you found him? <<
>> Well, he more likely found us. But I guess Miran didn't tell you everything. <<
>> Miran? What makes you think of Miran? He hasn't been seen since he wiped everyone's memory. <<

We didn't get any answers to anything and were just laughed at by Markus. After a few minutes, Xothar and Rundor came to take Markus to the city and interrogate him there. Xornud had called them while we were driving back to the station. I had also seen Rundor wearing a mechanical prosthetic as his hand. He gave me a dirty look when he entered the room.
It was all we could do but wait for Bristol to call so we could go to the Pentagon. And he hadn't called for so long that we drove back to the city that evening and waited for the next morning. But before we went to bed, I took a closer look at my watch. I wanted to turn off the tracker at home to avoid incidents like the one on the base.
Late in the morning, Xornud stormed to our night quarters and dragged us both to the train with two of his soldiers. The five of us then drove to Washington, D.C., where there was a railroad station similar to the one in Nevada. From there, we drove to the Pentagon in our human forms in a black Cadillac SUV, with me and Becka in the back seat.
During the drive, Becka had spent most of the time staring out the window as if she recognized the place. Then, as we drove past a park, I asked her >> Is everything okay? <<
She took a deep breath >> This was my territory. This is where I met Eriny. << she said quietly.
>> In this park? <<
>> No, by the monument. We walked along here once when he was on his way to campus. <<
I did my best to reassure her >> At least we know the Phalanx brought him back and he's okay. <<
She turned her head slowly towards me >> And what if all this doesn't work? Then no one is safe. <<
I exhaled and smiled at her >> It will work, don't worry about that. <<
They gave me and Becka visitor passes and then we followed the three phalanx wearing their disguises. I felt like I was in a movie Jenny had shown me about the Men in Black. And as cool as that feeling was, I was still worried that something could go wrong.
The large meeting room was already filled with people from the defense. Whether soldiers, ministers, officers or programmers, they had all been there. And they were all waiting to hear what Staff Officer Bristol had to tell them. And at the time, they didn't know that there were two aliens among them. And three lizardmen, but they weren't aliens because they were already born on the planet. But as I looked into the room, I also wondered who else could have been a Phalanx.
We sat down in our assigned seats and only a short time later the Minister of Defense entered the room. An older man with black hair and wearing a black suit. I couldn't see much more of him because I was further away from him. Someone on the podium announced him and I could actually see that Bristol was already on the podium, sitting nervously on a chair.
Everyone was quiet as the Minister of Defense walked up to the microphone >> Good afternoon and thank you all for finding the time to be here today. Last night, Staff Officer Bristol contacted me from Area 51 with some startling news. One that I didn't want to believe him at first. And I'm sure you've all heard what's happened to Area 51. Staff Officer Bristol wants to fill you in on the details and he's even brought someone with him. <<
He moved away from the desk and looked over at Bristol, who stood up and walked over to him. He thanked him and took the microphone >> Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for being here. I spoke to someone yesterday who has provided our military with valuable information for many years. I know how ridiculous this is going to sound, but what he told me yesterday is just shocking. <<
He paused for a moment to make sure everyone was listening to him >> There is an extraterrestrial race on its way to Earth to wipe out all of humanity so they can inhabit our planet themselves. <<
Disquiet settled in the room as everyone began to talk to each other. The collective murmur grew louder and louder and the apprehension in the people spread further and further that it made me feel sick. Becka also noticed me getting paler and held my hand tightly >> What's wrong? <<
I had to concentrate when I answered >> The fear in people is... is overwhelming. I also sense anger in some of them. <<
The Minister of Defense took the microphone again >> Now everyone please calm down. Officer Bristol is not finished yet. <<
The crowd slowly fell silent and Bristol spoke into the microphone again >> We don't know much about this species yet, although I had contact with them yesterday. Positive and negative. I would like to invite Agent X to the podium to further clarify the situation. <<
Xornud exhaled, but stood up and took one of his two people forward with him. The people in the room remained quiet as the two walked forward and stood at the lectern. Then Xornud began >> Ladies, gentlemen. My name is Agent X, at least that's what you can know about me. Two days ago, two individuals of the alien species called Griever, asked for our help. <<
While Xornud explained to everyone else what the problem was, Becka leaned over to me >> You still owe me an explanation about your empathy. << she whispered to me.
I looked at her in astonishment >> I told you I rarely use it. And only when it's necessary. Like in the fight against Markus. <<
>> I actually wanted to know where you got them from. <<
I sighed >> I don't know. I was born with it and all my life I thought I was the only one. At least until yesterday. Now I'm not sure of anything. <<
>> Do your parents both have dominant ability genes? <<
>> That's what I thought at first, but my parents are both shapeshifters. I didn't exactly get to talk to them much about the origin of my empathy. <<
>> At least you'll know what to do when we get back to the ship. <<
>> I rather hope I can talk to them about it when our people are welcomed on Earth. <<
Suddenly someone stood up behind us >> Excuse me, Commander Parker here. I have a question. Why don't we send some explosives to the ship? <<
In horror, we both turned around and took a closer look at this Parker. He looked about the same age as the Minister of Defense, maybe a little older. His brown hair had started to turn gray and his skin looked slightly wrinkled. He had rough stubble and a moustache. You could even see a metal cigarette holder in his breast pocket. He'd looked like he'd been cut straight out of the handbook for stereotypical > I-don't-like-him < generals.
The rest of the room turned to him as well >> Excuse me? << Xornud asked.
>> If we know where these aliens are hiding, then we can simply eliminate them very quickly. Then we won't have the stress of dealing with them afterwards. I mean, with our satellite systems we can certainly track them down. <<
>> And why should we take a violent path instead of a peaceful one? <<
>> You saw what they did to Area 51, right? Why would we risk letting that happen again? <<
The humans started murmuring to each other again. This time in agreement. I couldn't believe people were seriously considering this solution. There was a great opportunity in front of them and all they got out of it was war.
I wanted to stand up and say something to him, but the phalanx next to me held me by the arm and shook his head. Xornud had been a little disconcerted >> You don't think conventional weapon technology is going to be any match for the Griever ship, do you? << The commander laughed and spoke proudly from his chest >> You must know that our weapons have improved considerably in recent years. <<
Although the Phalanx held my arm, I still stood up and protested >> The Griever's technology is far too advanced for your missiles to do anything against the ship. It has force fields that can bounce off any weapon you launch. And if you attack first, it will be the last thing humanity ever does. <<
The room went quiet and Parker looked down at me from the elevated position >> And who are you, if I may ask? <<
Xornud cleared his throat >> This... is one of the Grievers. Apath, please show them what your people look like. <<
I looked at him again before taking on my real form. All the people in the meeting room gasped and tried to keep more distance from me. The Phalanx just grabbed his face and sank into his chair in shame. He already knew what was going to happen to him.
But Parker didn't twitch a muscle, except the corner of his mouth, so that his moustache danced briefly >> I was afraid that you were too scared to show yourselves to us. <<
I heard some people start to whisper about me and somehow I was proud of that. Maybe I could have finally convinced people to take peaceful paths. But Parker spoke to the podium again >> If these creatures can infiltrate us so easily, then all the more reason for us to launch a pre-emptive strike. Besides, we don't know if he's not just bluffing with the technology. <<
Again, unease spread. The commander's words turned my hands into fists. I could not accept that such idiots were employed in such high and important positions. During my two months on Earth, I got to know people in a completely different light. They were innocent, unsuspecting and open-minded. But this Parker. I still can't find the right words to describe him.

Xornud held the mask in his hand and looked at the healing scar on the mercenary's face. If only it had been a mercenary. Markus was lying in front of us and I jumped up from my kneeling position. Becka took a step back. Only Xornud remained calm, except for the fact that this stranger seemed to be healing, not like his colleagues.
>> We have to get out of here before more come. << he said calmly and pressed the mask to my chest.
>> Wait. << Becka stopped him >> We can't leave him here. <<
>> Are you going to carry him with you? <<
>> You can see he's alive, can't you? <<
>> Sorry, but do you know him? <<
I couldn't take my eyes off Markus and I spoke in a hoarse voice >> He... He was one of the best in military training. <<
Xornud clapped his hands >> Good to know that you are stronger than the best fighter in your military. You can carry him for all I care, then my people can interrogate him if he rises like Jesus. <<
Becka looked at him questioningly >> Who is Jesus? <<
I cleared my throat >> Mark was pronounced dead when we got back to our ship. Everyone thought you were involved. <<
Xornud shrugged >> This is the first time I've seen him. Listen, I have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes with your government on the ship, but there seem to be some very sleazy people working there. <<
>> We don't have a government. Just the military. <<
Xornud paused for a moment and his expression showed shock for a moment >> Ok, you know what? I've already called a transport. Just watch out long enough that no one spots you. I need to contact someone quickly. <<
He walked away from us with a phone and apparently dialed the number of the staff officer. Then Becka stood next to me >> How did you know where he would be? And don't say you heard him because I didn't hear any footsteps over there noise. <<
My eyes turned to her and I hadn't been able to form a sentence >> I... Uh... That... <<
>> Apath. Collect yourself, take a breath and take your time. I just want to know if you're hiding something from me that I should know. <<
I finally stopped stammering >> As much as I like you, sometimes you're too smart for me. <<
She raised an eyebrow >> What haven't you told me? <<
I glanced back at the burning base to see if anyone was running towards us. But the shuttles had long since landed and I suspected the soldiers were checking the area first. >> Please don't be mad at me, but I have a secret I've been carrying with me since birth. <<
>> Which one? <<
I took another breath before letting it shoot out of me quickly >> I have two abilities. <<
Her expression still remained serious, but changed to a smile >> Two? And what are they supposed to be? Like telepathy? Thermal vision? Wait, I think it's more like multispectral vision. Like that mask from that lizard monster in that old movie. What's it called again? << she said, amused.
>> I'm serious about this. My second ability is empathy. <<
She laughed briefly one last time before becoming serious again >> What, really now? <<
I just nodded. A car had been heard in the distance, but Becka didn't seem to notice. Her attention had been fully on me >> You can manipulate other people's emotions? Is that what you did to me? <<
>> No. I've never used my empathy on people like you. <<
>> People like me? <<
>> Friends. Those who are close to me. <<
A jeep stopped a few meters from us and the driver's door opened. A Phalanx stood with one foot on the ground and held on to the door >> Hurry up before they notice us. <<
Xornud ran to the car and opened the door for the back seat as I grabbed Markus and dragged him there. Becka stood still in shock at first, processing what she had heard. Xornud had to ask her to get into the car to pull her out of her thoughts. As we drove off, I asked Xornud, who was sitting in the passenger seat, >> What about Bristol? <<
>> I've already called a transport for him. Nothing will happen to him. << he then sighed >> I don't know what that was all about with your people, but at least he's convinced of the seriousness of the situation now. And we know what you guys are capable of. << We had arrived at this underground train station. There was a wing there that was similar to this planning center in the city. Xornud had also had an office there, to which we carried Markus' body and then tied him to a chair. Markus' breathing had returned to normal in the meantime and his eyes were closed. The large wound in his body had also healed and all that was left was a scar and the blood-soaked clothes, which had a large tear.
Xornud sat down on the edge of the table and crossed his arms. He sighed quickly >> Why have your people been here? I mean, I can guess that they tracked you with your watches, but why? <<
>> We traveled from New Mexico to Nevada in a matter of minutes. They must have found that suspicious. << Becka answered him.
>> But why did they attack the human base? And what's this one all about? <<
>> That's what we want to ask him. And why he has more than one ability. << I then said. With the last sentence, I even felt Becka's gaze on me.
>> What do you mean by that? << Xornud asked.
>> Him. << I looked over at Becka for a moment and was intimidated by her gaze >> He was a scout like us. Then when we got back to the ship, we were told he was dead. <<
Suddenly Markus started coughing and he regained consciousness >> Fuck! Where are they... Why am I tied to a chair. <<
Becka took a step behind me and Xornud released his arms. His eyes were wide open and the rest of his body was tense. Markus looked around the room and spotted me first, which is why he started grinning >> Didn't expect our reunion to be so soon. <<
Xornud tried to assume a natural sitting position as quickly as possible and I crossed my arms >> And I didn't expect you to be here. Now we're here anyway. <<
>> Life is strange, isn't it? Hey, can I get something to drink? And something to eat. <<
>> Where do you think you are? In a Norwegian prison? << Xornud asked, full of mockery.
Markus tried to turn around, but couldn't see Xornud >> In case you don't know, my body needs a lot of energy to heal wounds like this. And I've used it up too, so I might need some more. <<
Xornud looked at me questioningly, to which I just shook my head, walked towards Markus and knelt down in front of him >> First you answer me a few questions. <<
Markus laughed at me like a naive child >> I suppose you'd like that. <<
>> Apath killed you recently and I think he can do it again right away. << Xornud said threateningly.
>> Then my body will heal itself again. <<
>> With the remaining energy you have left? <<
I stood up and walked over to Xornud >> That's not the method I want to use. << I whispered to him.
>> You don't have to. He just needs to think it. <<
>> Yeah... No, not a chance. I saw the look on his face when he killed me. << Markus interjected.
>> Will you at least tell us why you're here? << Becka asked.
>> It's obvious, isn't it? <<
>> But why did you order the two shuttles to destroy the base? <<
Markus began to laugh. He had enjoyed this question so much that he could hardly contain his breath. But he stopped laughing when he had to cough again >> The new general sent them to find you and bring you back. I was sent by Miran. <<
>> All well and good, that's what I thought. But why do you have two abilities? << I asked impatiently and stood in front of him again.
He started grinning again >> You of all people want to know that? <<
I gave him a serious look, whereupon he shrugged his shoulders >> I got them exactly where you got yours. <<
Xornud stood up >> Wait, I thought you were born with your ability. <<
>> We are. Can you please leave us alone for five minutes? << I said to him. Slowly and with a scowl, Xornud left the room. The look on his face when he closed the door was full of suspicion and mistrust.
>> I've had them since I was born. And I've thought all my life that I'm the only one. <<
But instead of an answer, Markus started laughing until he had to cough again >> Sorry, but I think I'm getting more answers for myself by asking you. <<
>> Then perhaps you'd like to shed some light on things for me? <<
He chuckled this time >> Didn't your parents tell you that? Ah, wait a minute. You didn't have parents. <<
I straightened up again >> What? <<

Bristol looked at us skeptically and Xornud looked up in confusion. I glanced at my watch and Bristol slowly got up from his chair >> Are you involved in this? <<
I held my hands out in front of me defensively >> This must be a misunderstanding. <<
The radio crunched again >> Contacting is still unsuccessful, but we'll keep trying. Please have everyone in position and all defenses ready. <<
Bristol was about to leave the room, but Xornud jumped out of his chair, causing it to hit the floor >> Need I remind you that our organization has never let you down? Have we ever lured you into a trap or given you false information? << he shouted sternly at him. The staff officer looked at him in shock >> How are you going to explain this to me? <<
>> As I mentioned earlier, these two have some problems with their people. They are risking their lives just to save humanity from a technologically superior species. I now present you with a choice. Either you help us save humanity or I erase your entire memory and you die here with your own people and pride. <<
Silence spread through the room. Bristol first looked at Xornud in shock, then he looked over at us. His mind was filled with enormous stress. I could feel how overwhelmed he was. It was as if his head was going to burst because of this decision to trust aliens or remain skeptical.
The soldier spoke through the radio again >> They are attacking! Fire on sight! <<
An explosion was heard, which caused the ceiling above us to shake a little and the radio began to crackle. Bristol looked around in panic and his breathing became irregular. But then he regained his composure, forcing himself to remain calm >> Fine. I'll help you with your plan. The whole thing better be worth it, Agent X. << Xornud nodded to us to leave >> It will be. Now let's get out of here. <<
The staff officer looked at Xornud almost offended >> Leave? It's two flying objects against the entire security staff of Area 51. <<
Xornud, however, looked at him flatly >> These security personnel will most likely be blown away by these aliens and not suffer a single scratch. We should leave. Best if you lead us to a secret emergency exit. <<
With a worried, but also somehow dissatisfied look, Bristol opened the door and walked ahead with his two soldiers to an emergency exit. There was no alarm sound, instead the corridors were lit up with flashing red lights as we walked down the long white corridors and several soldiers came towards us to get to the top. We climbed a narrow metal staircase. At the end of it, Bristol opened a camouflaged trapdoor and the noise coming from the base was clearly audible. Flames were spreading where the infamous Area 51 had been a few minutes earlier. Explosions occurred one after the other and the screams of the soldiers filled the gaps between the gunfire and the engines of the shuttles, which circled the base like two vultures firing their guns. Embers and sparks of fire floated quietly in the air, rising out of the black clouds of smoke.
When all six of us were outside and looking over at the burning base, the two shuttles landed and I immediately sensed that something was different. I felt a great joy near us, which was so strong that I had received it passively. But it couldn't have been any of us, especially because I couldn't sense Xornud's feelings. And there had even been three of them with this evil joy, as if a task had become easier for them.
I took out my sword hilt and as I turned around, a dagger flew in our direction, straight towards the staff officer. Time seemed to slow down for me as I reflexively stretched out my arm and extended my blade. The dagger bounced off the metallic center of my blade and landed with the tip in the ground.
The sound of the impact woke everyone else and they all turned around as well. Three Grievers, dressed in white clothing with blue accents. Their faces had been covered and the rest of their heads had been covered with large hoods. On one belt were many throwing daggers and all of them also wore the watches we wore. The two outsiders threw their daggers and before anyone could react, they hit the hearts of the two human soldiers. Their bodies fell to the sandy ground. Before their eyes froze, the pain from the blades could be seen in their hearts. Then the middle one of the Grievers spoke in an all too familiar voice >> Miran sends his regards. Traitor. <<
With the last word, he drew his own sword and slowly took a few steps towards me. I wanted to meet him, but Xornud put his hand on my shoulder and walked towards him himself. He took out his sword hilt and activated the curved green blade, whereupon Mr. Bristol could no longer comprehend what was happening.
>> Mr. Staff Officer, please get yourself to safety. Meet me at Safehouse C. << said Xornud, before he swung his sword at the Griever. However, the Griever did not even block his attack, but turned away from the blade once and continued to walk towards me. However, the staff officer did not let Xornud give him this instruction twice and ran off.
Xornud wanted to stab the Griever in the back from behind, but his two colleagues stopped him and kept him busy.
>> Who are you? << Becka asked, also drawing her sword.
>> Mercenaries. That's all you need to know. << the mercenary replied when he was only a few steps away from us and stopped.
>> What are you waiting for? << I asked him.
He just took a breath and pulled out a smoke bomb from a pocket >> I just want to enjoy the moment. After all, 20 years without this part of the job cuts into your psyche. <<
He then threw the smoke bomb on the ground in front of us and a very thick cloud of smoke settled around us. Before he disappeared into the cloud of smoke, he put on a special pair of goggles and deactivated his blade. You could barely see a meter around you, but it was enough for me and Becka to see each other. The mercenary had become invisible to us and his footsteps had been so quiet that they were drowned out by the noise from the base. The only thing I could do was pick up his emotions and use them to locate his position.
The mercenary drew an arc around us on the left and then came at Becka from the side. He probably took a swing because he was looking forward to finally killing someone again. I pulled Becka to the side and blocked his blow when he activated his blade again as he lunged. Sparks flew from our blades and I could see him better through the light. But he immediately subsided and disappeared into the smoke again, just as he had appeared.
Becka stood with her back to mine and waited for the next attack >> How are we supposed to manage that? We don't have thermal goggles like he does. << she asked immediately.
>> I'll let you know when he comes back. <<
>> What do you mean? Like earlier? That was just luck. <<
>> Just trust me. <<
>> I trust you more than I trust myself, in theory. << she mumbled to herself.
>> I've heard that. <<
The mercenary came at me frontally this time. So I crouched down and waited for him to get to us. He came closer and closer, but was careful not to make too loud a sound, which is why he was slow. Then he swung out to the side with one hand to activate the blade at the last moment, which was supposed to knock my head off my body if I had been standing. I nudged Becka against her leg and she immediately ducked without questioning my signal. The mercenary's blade went nowhere and while he was busy swinging, I lunged upwards, leaving a long, vertical cut in his torso.
His blood splattered on my face and the smoke slowly dissipated. I was only a few centimeters in front of him and could see my cut veer halfway to the side. I hit his face and with it his glasses. They could no longer hold on to his face and fell to the ground. The mercenary's eyes had been full of shock and for a moment the noise from the base had disappeared. The only thing I could hear was the mercenary's gasping breaths and how he had tried to speak with the last of his strength >> Not... bad. I'll see you... Next time. <<
His body landed on its back on the sandy ground and his sword fell out of his hand, the blade retracting on its own. His gaze froze and turned cold. Something inside me fell over, taking several things with it. The bang as I fully comprehended what had happened sent a shiver down my spine and pushed my heart inwards. I lifted my gaze only slightly upwards and saw Xornud, without his disguise, slit the throat of one of the other two mercenaries head-on. With a deft flick of his wrist, he then turned his sword around and held it in reverse, then plunged the blade into the second mercenary's stomach.
Becka put her hand on my shoulder and the sounds from the surroundings returned in one fell swoop >> Apath, are you alright? << she asked me gently and worriedly.
I had been holding my breath until then and was breathing a bit frantically >> I, uh... Yeah, it's all good. We were never prepared to kill our own people. <<
Xornud came over to us breathing heavily >> Now who is this Miran? If you don't mind me asking. <<
>> Didn't Miran die on Aurora 20 years ago? << Becka interjected.
>> In the propaganda, maybe. << I enlightened them both >> Miran is after me because he knows I lied to Luke. <<
>> Luke's father? << Xornud asked.
>> No. Fortunately not. <<
>> Well, at least. Hey, why is he still breathing? His eyes are definitely dead. << he pointed to the actually dead mercenary.
And he was not mistaken. Although the mercenary was dead, he didn't stop breathing. He was breathing slowly and very calmly, but it was strange. Xornud quickly looked at the other two >> These two aren't moving a muscle. Did you break yours somehow? <<
I knelt down in front of the mercenary who was actually dead. His eyes remained fixed and cold, but the scar on his face was slowly closing. With a shaky hand, I tried to pull off his mask, but I couldn't. Then Xornud's hand appeared and pulled the mask off for me. That face. I realized why that voice sounded familiar.

After we were treated, we were given human clothing and taken to the night quarters where we could rest for the night. Before we entered, however, we were each given pain-relieving pills made by the Phalanx themselves.
I found it difficult to fall asleep. Not only had we lied to Luke, but we had also carried out this whole thing and deceived all our people. I shivered at the thought of what would happen when this was over. Probably me and Becka would have been exiled by everyone.
After I returned to the ship, I hadn't even had the chance to see my parents again. I wonder what they would have thought of me if the negotiation with the humans had started. Too many >> I wonder what's happening? << questions whizzed through my head and I lay down on my side, hoping that I could finally fall asleep.
The next morning, we drove with Xornud in a small car through the densely built-up town. The infrastructure had been pretty basic. Only straight streets in a grid formation and the sidewalks for pedestrians had been wide everywhere, not like in most places in Manhattan. I liked this layout so much more that I wondered how other countries around the world had built their streets.
At the edge of the city was a cavernous tunnel, built and furnished in a similar way to human train stations. Except that nothing had been modern there, instead the ceiling of the gigantic tunnel was supported by wooden poles and for once there had been long ceiling lamps attached to the stone ceiling, but these also looked quite old and a general renovation of the entire city would probably have taken an eternity and I don't even want to start with the effort involved.
The individual tracks were not marked with numbers, but with the names of countries. Xornud also said that all the tracks were connected, so you could get to any place in the world without having to travel to the center next to the city every time. The technology of the Phalanx impressed me, because to construct such an underground rail network in 500 years and then apparently complete it was definitely incredible. No wonder why the majority of people didn't believe the conspirators.
We got on one of the trains that ran around the country. We were heading straight for Nevada. I yawned because we had gotten up and left very early and prepared to make myself comfortable on the fabric-covered seat and catch up on my sleep during the ride. I was approached by Xornud, who was sitting in the seat opposite me >> Are you really so desperate to catch up on your beauty sleep? <<
I opened my eyes and looked at him with my arms folded >> I've been on Earth for over two months, but I was able to memorize the map so roughly. Nevada is a good distance from New Mexico, isn't it? <<
He nodded and smiled >> Look out the window. What do you see? <<
I looked past Becka. Outside the window, the cave walls whizzed past us so fast that it looked like the train was surrounded by a smooth wall. >> I see a smooth wall. <<
>> You see one, but the truth is that this wall is not smooth. Take a closer look. The train is traveling at an insane speed that you have never seen or will never see with humans. We'll be arriving in Nevada in a few minutes. <<
>> But why can't we feel the G-forces? << I asked him.
But Xornud just shrugged his shoulders >> I'm a soldier. This is not my area of expertise, I'd rather leave it to the professionals. << he said calmly and looked out of the window.
And indeed. After a quarter of an hour, the wall moved slower and slower past us until the train finally came to a stop. We got off and found ourselves in a smaller version of this underground cave station. There was an old road sign in the middle with the words > Welcome to Nevada <, which had already started to rust. Besides us, there were other phalanxes in this station, either coming from the surface or ascending to the surface in elevators.
Xornud went ahead again, taking the elevator up, but not all the way to the surface. Instead, he went to another level where there were garages and military vehicles parked in these garages. But he kept walking, past all the menacing machines, until we arrived shortly afterwards at garages with black cars. This part had been much bigger and therefore had more vehicles.
We got into one of the cars and drove out of the garage and up a path. The sky was a little cloudy, so the sun wasn't blinding. Although it was a fall month, the thermometer in the car read 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
When we were only a few hundred meters from Area 51, me and Becka took on our human forms and Xornud activated his camouflage. Becka had black hair and her skin color had been slightly darker than mine. However, her eyes remained yellow, like mine. Xornud, on the other hand, looked like a white office worker in his black suit. He wore sunglasses to cover his eyes, because otherwise the holographic display would have obscured his vision.
At the gate, one of the guards looked at the driver's seat and after recognizing the driver, he immediately waved us through. Another soldier waved to us where we could park the car and immediately after we got out, a staff officer approached us. He immediately turned to Xornud and he took him a few steps away from us to talk to him.
Becka crossed her arms and sighed slightly.
>> What's going on? <<
She shook her head >> Nothing. I just don't know if all this is really a good idea. <<
I put my hands in my pockets >> Me neither. But I don't want to be partly responsible for a completely innocent species being wiped out. <<
She sighed again >> Yeah, I wouldn't like to carry that burden on my shoulders either. <<
We stood in silence for a while and this silence was interrupted by the quiet conversation between Xornud and the staff officer. Then I asked Becka >> What about Luke? <<
She looked at me cluelessly >> What about him? <<
>> Did you talk to him before we left the ship? <<
She shook her head and raised her eyebrow >> No. We didn't speak to each other. Should I have? <<
Suddenly, Xornud spoke over to us as the staff officer entered a hangar with two soldiers >> You two, come with me. <<
The four of us were sitting in a meeting room with a round table made of dark wood in the middle. The two soldiers were both standing in front of the black door outside the room. The chairs were made of black leather and there was a gray carpet underneath them. The walls and ceiling were white and rough. There were no windows because the room and its corridors were below ground level.
>> So Agent X. What do you have to tell us? << the staff officer asked. Xornud took a pen out of his jacket pocket and placed it on the table with his hand over it >> Mr. Bristol. What I want to tell you and show you might shock you. I would ask you to remain calm. According to our protocol, I would have to remove this conversation from your memory if you do not give the reaction we are hoping for. <<
>> With all due respect, Agent X. I have looked death in the eye and I am married. My daughter lived with an asshole in Manhattan until two months ago. I think I can manage to keep my cool. Besides, you've never had to use that protocol with me. <<
It had been clear to see Xornud trying to suppress a grin, which is why he immediately continued >> Believe me, you haven't seen this yet. <<
He nodded to us and we both assumed our true forms, whereupon Mr. Bristol jumped out of his chair in shock, but remained silent. Xornud pointed to the chair, whereupon Mr. Bristol sat down again >> These two are here to help us stop an invasion. <<
He still looked at us in fear, but tried to listen to Xornud >> And how...? How is this going to happen? <<
Xornud leaned a little closer to the table >> We have to convince the Pentagon not to attack their ship. We want to take a peaceful path by granting their people asylum on Earth. <<
Bristol thought quietly. His gaze shifted between us and Xornud. Then he tapped his fingers slowly on the table >> And you've come to me because I have contacts in the Pentagon? <<
>> I wouldn't have come if it wasn't serious. <<
He tapped his finger against the table again >> And how do we know that these two don't want to set us up? <<
I spoke up and interrupted what Xornud was about to say >> With all due respect, I don't mean that in a derogatory way. But if our military wanted that, the invasion would have started yesterday and we wouldn't be sitting here today. <<
Astonished, he looked at Xornud again >> They understand our language? << he whispered to him.
>> We both wonder why you humans have so much in common with us. That's also one of the reasons why we want to save you before it's too late. <<
>> And instead of asking us for asylum first, your species wants to eliminate us all? Does your military even know what you're up to? << I exhaled deeply >> It's a bit complicated. <<
>> Then doesn't that mean you two are betraying your own people? <<
Xornud intervened >> Leave this matter to the two of them. It's their problem and not yours. <<
Suddenly, Bristol's radio interrupted our conversation. A soldier, who was positioned outside, spoke through >> There are two unidentified flying objects moving in our area. They are probably heading towards us. Please keep all eyes open and remain on standby. We are still trying to make contact with them. Over. <<

Recording No. 15
The hall had a round shape and was quite large. Almost excessively large. Red banners hung from the walls, with a black and gold emblem sewn into them. A black sword in front of a golden shield. Pretty minimalist, but it served its purpose. At least it gave me an idea of what it meant.
On closer inspection, however, I could see that this room must have once been a control center, as there were connections for consoles behind the banners. In addition, the center of the hall was raised, presumably for the captain of the ship, but there were two 2.30 m tall phalanxes there.
One of them had poisonous green scales and yellow on its belly. His eyes were blue and he looked a little skinnier than his partner, who was muscular. He wore gold-plated armor, but no weapons on his belt. His partner's armor, however, was the same dark grey as the soldiers' and there were not too long bars on his belt. His scales were a grey color with black diamonds on the sides and he had a comb with red compartments. The head shapes of the two were more reminiscent of a Komodo dragon and they had no fangs protruding from their jaws.
The gray one had his muscular arms crossed in front of his chest and the green one had his folded in front of him. This one had also had a welcoming face than the other >> Welcome to our city, strangers. Forgive us for hitting you with our guns. We did not expect them to ever be used, after all these many years. << he said in a deep yet warm voice >> My name is Xaeros, I represent our people. Next to me is our warlord, Torx. <<
Torx nodded to us, albeit very slightly and barely noticeably. Xaeros leaned forward slightly and looked at me and Becka >> That's really interesting. You look like blue humans. <<
>> We were also very surprised that we have a lot in common with them. << I replied.
Torx uncrossed his arms and propped them on his hips >> Then tell us how you plan to stop the invasion of your people. <<
I started to stammer because of his direct manner >> We... The plan was to postpone the invasion by coming back to Earth and scouting your hideout, so we have more time to come up with a proper plan. <<
>> And you were hoping we'd help you with that? Sounds like you don't have many options left. <<
>> But that's a good thing. << Xaeros interrupted his partner's negative attitude >> Our people have been protecting human kind from such dangers for centuries. <<
>> But this is the first time that aliens have tried to take over the planet. Before that, we stopped them from wiping themselves out. <<
>> Then think of this as a change of pace. A way to do something bigger. But too bad there's little I can do to help you with that. The only thing I can do is explain the gravity of the situation to our people and ask to be of assistance to you both. <<
>> Yes, too bad. << Torx muttered to himself and turned to Xornud >> Since this is a state of emergency, I give you every authority to do whatever is necessary. You will help the two of them with the whole thing. Meanwhile, I will get our army ready should the worst outcome possible occur. <<
Xornud bowed and left the hall with us. At the door, he told his men to join the rest of the army and follow Torx's orders. Two of them, however, he ordered to go with us and serve as a kind of guard should anything happen. With them, we left the ship and entered a large building a hundred meters in front of it. It was a kind of headquarters for the high-ranking officers and generals, where they worked out plans and strategies.
The building had been full of cabinets and human computers and old ceiling lights that the Phalanx must have taken with them, but there wasn't much else in the way of furnishings. The walls, floor and ceilings were all made of the same sandstone. The rooms were also only separated by old wooden doors, but the windows had no glass panes. This wasn't necessary, as the city had been located in a cave.
We entered a larger room on the second floor of the building and the two guards remained standing in the hallway. It appeared to be Xornud's office, which was much more fully furnished than Luke's office. There were even a few rare and beautiful plants in pots, on shelves and windowsills.
Xornud went to his wooden desk and took out a piece of paper with a pen >> Well, I have some ideas on how we could stop the invasion, but I would first like to hear your thoughts and a little more about your military's procedures. << he said and sat down on an old office chair. He indicated the two chairs in front of us and we both sat down.
>> Everyone on the ship thinks it was the humans' fault that our previous planet was destroyed. << Becka began.
Xornud looked at her with the utmost disbelief >> The humans? <<
I stepped in between >> It's propaganda. No one but the scouts and the high-ranking military officers know anything about the humans. No one except some insiders know that Aurora went to the dogs because of too much pollution. <<
He noted it all down >> And you two have been initiated? <<
Becka looked at me, to which I replied to Xornud >> It's a bit more complicated than that. <<
He nodded >> I see. Good, and what did you guys have in mind to stop it? <<
>> We are officially on a scouting mission to find your whereabouts and gather information about you. My thought process then was for you to take us hostage and deter our military from continuing the invasion. <<
He stopped writing and looked at me thoughtfully. Then he put the pen down and folded his hands together >> That probably wouldn't be a good idea. I'm afraid it would pass as an act of violence and they'd attack the Earth either way. Besides, Xothar told me about the watches that will send you back if something goes wrong. <<
I looked at him in surprise >> How does she know what the watches are good for? <<
>> She can connect the dots. That's why she's my right-hand woman. <<
>> And who is Rundor then? << Becka asked.
>> The thug she trusts. Well, I have another suggestion. We unite our force with the human force or we tell the humans about you first and try to make a deal with the Grievers. <<
>> What kind of deal is that? << I asked him.
>> One where your people could get some kind of asylum on Earth. How big is the population on your ship? <<
>> Over a million Grievers. <<
>> That's very manageable. And in time, these Grievers could even be assimilated into human society. <<
>> But what if it all goes wrong? << Becka asked.
>> If everything goes wrong and your military attacks Earth anyway, we will be forced to join the fight. Warlord Torx is preparing our army for this. <<
I exchanged a look with Becka and I could see in her eyes that she would much rather take a more peaceful path. I was no different, but I wasn't convinced that the military would enter into such a negotiation. However, I couldn't think of any excuse why they would turn down such an offer if they decided to expose this whole lie.
>> What would be the first step? << I asked Xornud.
Xornud smiled a little >> We need to go to Area 51 and talk to one of my contacts so we can get to the Pentagon. There we will present you and we can implement the plan with the negotiation. << >> Can't we just go straight to the Pentagon with your cover? << Becka asked.
But Xornud shook his head >> My watch can only disguise me into a Man in Black. And not everyone knows about us. There are also specially made watches, but they are more complex to create and only work on certain phalanxes. It would take days to recalibrate them. My contact can give us free access. The rest shouldn't be a problem. At least I hope so. People can be unpredictable. <<
>> Then we'll go to your contact. << I said.
Xornud nodded >> Yes, but first we'll take care of your injuries and then you can rest for the night. Tomorrow morning we'll leave for Nevada. <<
>> But isn't Nevada a bit far from New Mexico? <<
>> Don't worry about that. We have our ways. <<

I looked over at Xothar and she went over to the strange lizard-man. They were both conversing in their own language and I occasionally got a few amazed and sometimes skeptical looks from him. Becka and I exchanged glances and I noticed how the other men in black suits broke their camouflage and we were surrounded by lizard-men. They made sure we didn't make any wrong moves while Xothar talked to the other.
With the last sentence she said to him, they all exchanged glances and the one next to Xothar then looked at me in surprise. He came closer to me and Becka rose from her kneeling position.
>> Why would two Grievers, as you call yourselves, betray their own people for a planet that was promised to them as a new home world? << he asked me.
I had to raise my head a little, but that had already been a habit for me, since I wasn't the tallest Griever on the ship >> We have our personal reasons. I don't know how much you can relate to this, but I can't allow an invasion where the entire human race dies out for no reason. <<
He looked down at the unconscious Eriny and began to grin. As he did, he looked to his colleagues around us and they began to chuckle quietly amongst themselves >> Then you'll need more than the two of you to make this happen. <<
>> We were hoping you could help us with that. <<
Now he chuckled himself and even turned to Xothar and Rundor >> These must be desperate times for you, aren't they? <<
>> The invasion was supposed to take place today, but we don't know anything about you yet. That's why it was postponed. <<
>> Yes, Xothar just told me all that. But today is your lucky day. I am the first General Xornud of the Phalanx Army. << he interrupted me and held out his hand.
Until then, I hadn't realized that these creatures only had three fingers with black claws. I hesitated to accept the scaly handshake. No one would have just helped a stranger with something without being persuaded or knowing the full extent of it. Then I remembered Jenny and how she had invited me to her place the first time we met.
I returned his handshake, >> I am Apath and this is Becka. We're both scouts for the Auroran army. <<
He gently squeezed my hand and Becka gave me a slightly shocked look >> Auroran? Was that your last home planet? <<
>> Yes, but we were both born a year after Aurora died. <<
>> Interesting. Then you two get in with your human with me. We're going back to the city. << he then ended the conversation and went ahead with his four people. He instructed Xothar and Rundor to drive with the others.
I and Becka grabbed Eriny by the arms and carried him after Xornud. >> What do we do if this really is a trap? We don't know what Xothar told him. << she whispered to me.
>> That's what we have the watches for. <<
>> And what if the alarm doesn't reach the ship? There may be jammers in this city. <<
>> We are shape-shifters. If the worst comes to the worst, we can sneak out. Until then, all we can do is blindly trust our hosts. <<
We arrived at three white vans. The footprints emanating from them formed three large lines that separated in different directions very early on. Xornud opened the side door for us and let us get in first before sitting in the passenger seat.
On the way to this town, I looked out of the window into the dark desert to realize that we were already driving on an interstate highway. So I finally asked Xornud >> Excuse me, but where exactly are we? <<
>> We are in New Mexico. Near the small town of Dulce, to be exact. <<
>> Are we going to Dulce? << Becka then asked.
>> The town is on the way. <<
Becka looked at me with a look that told me she knew just as much as before. But I just shrugged my shoulders and made sure the other lizards didn't attack us.
After 20 minutes we entered Dulce. The small town was empty and none of the houses still had their lights on. Then we suddenly pulled into a large garage and the engines were switched off. Silence spread between us all and it also remained dark in this garage. Xornud pressed a button on a remote control and it jerked briefly. The floor beneath us began to move downwards and moments later we found ourselves in an illuminated shaft leading downwards.
The deeper we went down that shaft, the more I believed the lunatics on the street and their conspiracies. The cloaks these lizards had could have at least explained them pretending to be human, but I still wasn't sure if they were using this technology to smuggle themselves into high places. Let alone whether they were using this opportunity to take over the earth themselves. The ground stopped and a gate opened in front of us. The engines were switched back on and we drove on slowly. The path in front of us was made of this sandstone, just like the walls around us. It had all been very tunnel-like with old lamps hanging down from the ceiling, providing just enough light.
But then we left the tunnel and found ourselves on the edge of a very large and open cave, which was dimly lit, just as it had looked outside. In the hollow of the cave was a huge city made of the same sandstone and in the middle was a dark gray pod half buried in the ground. Becka and I stared out of the window in fascination, admiring this unusual city.
>> That in the middle was the ship that our people crashed on Earth centuries ago. << Xornud said when he noticed us.
>> How long have you been here? << Becka asked.
>> More than half a millennium, perhaps. I'm not sure about that. I'm not that old. <<
>> Who lives over 500 years? << I then said jokingly.
>> Oh, that's not the problem. The problem is that I'm only 200 years old. <<
My smile slowly dissolved and I looked over at Becka, who was also looking at me in shock. Only a short time later, closer to the pod, we stopped in a hall full of more vehicles and got out. Xornud came straight to us as we were carrying Eriny again >> Leave it to my people. They'll take him to the medics and then back to where he came from. Where does he live? <<
Becka took a step forward >> He's from Washington, D.C. <<
>> Good. My people will take care of him. He'll wake up tomorrow in his own bed like nothing happened. <<
Two of the lizards came up to me and took Eriny from me to take him to a medic. Meanwhile, Becka followed behind him with a worried look.
>> Let's go. << Xornud interrupted Becka's thoughts >> We have to tell our two regents about you and the invasion. <<
We followed him and his men down several corridors and hallways until we entered the ship. The entrance was guarded by two soldiers with spears without blades, but we were all let through because Xornud had waved us all through. The ship was made of this dark gray steel, both inside and out, like parts of the Phalanx's armor. Only against my expectations, the high and wide corridors of the ship were quite well lit with ceiling lamps.
The deeper we went into the ship, the more of these Phalanx we encountered. There was much more variety among them than there was among the Grievers. There were phalanx that came up to my waist and some that were one or two heads taller than me. The color of their scales also ranged from light shades of green or red to dark shades of grey. Their eye colors were just as different and some of them had a crest on their heads that reached all the way down their backs. And they all gave us similarly confused and irritated looks when they saw me and Becka.
After a while, we probably arrived in the middle of the ship, where there was a large double door. Xornud asked us to wait outside while he spoke to the two regents. In the meantime, we got more astonished looks from passing Phalanx and Becka turned towards the door >> I don't like the way they all look at us. << she whispered to me.
I grinned a little >> I didn't know that was a problem for you. <<
>> Well, Eriny just infected me a bit. << after this sentence she fell silent and I could see her cheeks turn slightly pink.
I could have told her about Jenny because I realized that I wasn't the only one with this problem. Maybe it could even have loosened me up a bit, especially after that dream I had after the crash. But then my thoughts turned to something else. The dream I had before. What did it mean? Was this the price I would have to pay if I helped humanity? A kind of hell that people talked about. At least the strange shards and the red figure with the horns would fit the description.
But Xornud opened the door and pulled me out of my thoughts >> Come in. They want to hear what you have to say. <<

A second blow to the body of the shuttle. This time further back, closer to the ramp, creating a hole. The nose of the shuttle pointed downwards and the number for our altitude raced downwards quickly. I held on tightly to the pilot's seat until he lifted the shuttle with all his strength and we slowly glided down.
Slowly my feet hit the ground and I let go of the seat. >> Sit back down and fasten your seatbelt, Private. << the pilot ordered me. I quickly ran back to Becka and sat down in my seat.
Everyone held on tightly to the seat belts and hoped that we would survive. At least that's how it seemed. But you couldn't say the same about the big one. >> What hit us? << Becka asked me, hoping that I could hear her despite the sound of the wind.
>> That's a very good question. How about we come back to it later, once we've gotten through this? <<
>> Sounds like a plan. <<
The two pilots tried their best to land the shuttle as quickly and safely as possible, both shouting something to each other. Then one of them unbuckled and came towards us >> We're trying our best, but I think we're going to crash land. Please hold on tight, otherwise you might end up flying out of there. <<
>> Holding on sounds good. << I said to him. Then he turned to the others and repeated to them what he had told us.
>> Should we contact the ship and tell them to get us out of here? << Becka asked me.
Before I could answer her, something hit the body again and we seemed to lose altitude again. I looked out of the big hole where the ramp had been and the sky had been dark. Below us was a desert-like landscape that was getting closer and closer. At the last moment, the shuttle was righted again, but we hit the ground. The jerking had become so strong that I could hardly hold on properly. Then everything went black for me. I went into shock. I opened my eyes and in front of me was a green meadow with a few clusters of flowers here and there. The sunset was shining on my back and the fresh wind was blowing against me from the side. Then I heard a soft laugh and someone took my hand from behind. I turned around and was immediately pulled along by the human being. A brunette woman led me through the beautiful meadow in front of a forest.
The birds chirped to themselves as we got closer to the forest. Then the woman turned to me, but the sun was blinding me, so I couldn't make out her face. But she looked very familiar. And I knew why that was. She giggled softly again >> Apath. << she said softly. I didn't know much about the religions of the earth, but many people spoke of a sacred place. A place full of love, where those whose time had run out could go. A place free of worries, where you are united with your loved ones. It felt like I had reached that place. >> Apath. << she said again in her soft voice. Then I felt someone shake me and repeat my name. Not in that gentle tone, though, but in a worried one. The meadow and the forest faded, as did the woman, until everything went black. Then the feeling of carelessness disappeared and I felt pain in my back and someone trying to shake me awake.
My eyelids slowly opened and I immediately started coughing. The sky above me was dark and stars twinkled at me. Black smoke rose upwards and soon I could make out the crackling fire of the shuttle as the beeping in my ears died down.
Becka's face suddenly appeared above me >> Apath! You're alive! << she cried out, hugging me as I tried to stand up.
>> How did we survive that now? << I asked her, coughing.
>> Ask someone else. << she replied in a slightly shaky voice.
She had a few scratches and soot stains on her face. A drop of blood had even rolled down and dried, but none of it seemed to have interested her.
I sat up straight and had a direct view of the shuttle. It had been a pile of scrap metal, burning and billowing black smoke. Behind it was a long drag mark on the sandy ground, in which I was actually lying. Burning pieces of scrap metal were also lying in the deep track and some others were even lying around it.
Then I jumped up without paying attention to any pain >> What about the others? << I asked Becka worriedly.
She leaned on her knee >> They're fine. I helped them get out of the shuttle, but Eriny is unconscious. <<
>> What about the pilots? <<
>> They didn't make it. You'd rather not have to look at them. <<
When I saw the two lizards running towards us, dragging Eriny with them, I had calmed down enough to start feeling my own pain. My left side hurt, especially my arm. It was like something was trying to rip my entire arm out with my shoulder. I grabbed my shoulder and even knelt down because I had no strength left in my legs.
>> Oh shit. Is everything alright? << Becka asked me, full of worry.
>> Why am I actually out here? <<
>> You flew out of the shuttle. Your harnesses failed and you apparently went into shock so that you couldn't react. You were lucky it happened very close to the ground. <<
>> Interesting thing, this luck I have. <<
>> At least you haven't lost your sense of humor. << the little lizard said when they finally reached us.
Becka took Eriny and carefully laid him down on the ground >> What do we do now? Do we contact the ship? <<
>> Send them a message that we have definitely arrived on Earth. And how we got here. <<
I carefully stood up again and took a deep breath. The cool autumn air smelled of smoke from the fire and my ribs ached a little as I drew in the air.
>> I think we should have warned you about this. << said the little lizard.
I looked at her in irritation >> Of what? <<
>> Human defense systems aren't nearly strong enough to penetrate force field shields like the one on your shuttle. <<
>> Were those your people? << I asked her, slightly indignant.
>> I assume so. <<
I sighed deeply, resting my hands on my hips and feeling the pain in my ribs again. Then Becka stopped me from starting to grumble >> We are supposed to continue the mission, says the sergeant. <<
>> All right. I could have guessed that. << I said and closed my eyes for a second. When I opened them again, I looked out to the side into the dark desert. There was no one to be seen far and wide. Just a few dry bushes and rocks. The ground wasn't just red sand either, but had a kind of stone layer underneath.
>> By the way, what are your names? I don't think we've had a chance to get to know each other. << I then asked the little lizard and held out my hand.
She looked at it skeptically at first and then sighed, shaking her head >> My name is Xothar. This is Rundor. << she said, but did not accept my handshake.
I slowly dropped my arm >> I am Apath and this is Becka. <<
>> Um, Apath? << Becka interrupted me as she looked in the other direction >> There's someone coming towards us. <<
I looked in the same direction as the other two. In the not-too-distant darkness, five black silhouettes were moving towards us. After that, I heard a stone being kicked on the left. As I looked around, five more black silhouettes were moving towards us. The same on the other side. They were all not far away from us and the ones from the sides had already closed the open space behind us. We had been surrounded from all sides, while all the silhouettes were only a few meters away from us.
>> That's a very pleasant way to say welcome. << I whispered to Xothar. Then one of the 15 people spoke in a threatening male voice >> What are you and what are your intentions? <<
>> We are both Grievers and our intention is to stop an invasion from our own people. << I then said with my hands raised.
The man stepped closer and I could see him better up close. He was a little taller than me and wore a black suit with sunglasses. Almost like those men in black I'd heard about. But then he turned something on his wristwatch, started flickering like a hologram and seconds later another lizard-man stood in front of me. He was wearing armor similar to ours and there were two sword hilts on his belt. His scales were a swamp green color and like Xothar and Rundor, his head was shaped like a cobra. His eyes were a piercing yellow and his fangs were slightly longer than the others. The shoulder plates of his armor covered more than the two others.
>> What kind of invasion? << he asked me coolly.

After fifteen minutes, I left the lab and returned with Luke to his office. He sat down on his swivel chair and I sat opposite him on a normal one. With his arms on the table and his hands clasped together, he looked at me waiting >> So? Did they talk to you? <<
I nodded and looked down at the table to avoid looking him in the eye >> They're going to show us where their species is hiding. <<
Astonished, he blinked at me >> Just like that? What do they want for that? Half the planet? <<
I shook my head and looked at him again >> They haven't made any demands yet. And we'd probably even have to postpone the invasion until we've found out enough about them. <<
He moved his chair closer to the table >> How does that work then? <<
>> I and someone else, preferably also a shapeshifter, will return to Earth with them. To get to their hideout, we will have to take the form of lizard-people. And we need the human. <<
Luke shifted his eyebrows >> Why do you need the human? <<
It was getting harder and harder to lie to his face, but I couldn't allow him to notice. Feeling like I was being squeezed from all sides, I answered him >> The human is a kind of hostage. The lizards kidnap humans and lead them to their hiding place through special paths. We can use him to explore these paths as well and better investigate their defenses. <<
Luke leaned back in his chair and thought about it. >> Who do you want to take with you? << he then asked me.
I leaned back in my chair as well and crossed one leg over the other >> Who do you trust the most, besides me? <<
His eyes wandered around the room as he considered, but when his gaze landed on me again, it was clear he had no idea >> I don't know the scouts. You trained with them. You better tell me who you'd rather go with. <<
>> How about Becka then? I trained with her most of the time. If so, I'd trust her the most because we've also worked out signs together that we can use during a fight. <<
Luke's body froze, causing the slight, barely noticeable rocking back and forth in his chair to stop. Suddenly it had gone quiet and the only thing that broke the silence were the footsteps of soldiers and other high-ranking officers in the hallway outside the office. Then Luke broke our eye contact and rose from his chair. With his hands behind his back, he walked very slowly to the small chest of drawers on the left wall and then placed a hand on it >> Becka you say? << he tried to hide it.
He looked at me again and hesitated with the next sentence >> All right. If you trust her the most. But please don't tell her about this whole thing with our people's past. <<
>> Why would I even do that? <<
He just shrugged >> If that's all, you can go back to your barracks and fill Becka in. Meanwhile, I'll try to get the mission approved as soon as possible. <<
It was already evening when I walked back. Most of the soldiers were preparing equipment and maintaining the shuttles and their weapons. Everyone was expecting the invasion to take place the next day, which is why most of them were excited. Some of them, who had become close friends after the three years, were already planning to become neighbors on Earth. I even overheard one couple thinking about starting a life together on Earth.
The last thing I wanted to do was break the bad news to them. But I stopped after walking past them. Was it really worth it? They would all hate me. Even if I could escape the consequences, it would have been the judgment of society that could tear me apart. Someone called my name and came towards me. It had been Becka, carrying a large box of ammunition >> Hey, there you are. What did the sergeant want with you? <<
I glanced at the other soldiers before answering her. Maybe it would have been better if I had done what I had told Luke. But when I looked at Becka again, I remembered the person with the green hair. She had been worried about him. And she wasn't the only one who had looked after a particular person.
>> I'm Luke's advisor now. And we've both been given a new mission. <<
She put the box down carefully and crossed her arms >> Are we supposed to continue this propaganda? << she asked me with a critical tone.
>> No, but I want Luke and everyone else to think we're helping them. <<
Her arms loosened and she propped them on her hips >> What do you mean? <<
>> We take Eriny and the two lizards and return to Earth. Luke thinks we'll disguise ourselves as lizards and explore their lair. I want the help of these creatures to stop the invasion. And bring Eriny home, of course. <<
Her face started to light up >> Really? << she asked me excitedly.
>> Yes, but make sure no one gets wind of this. Just wait until someone calls you and lets you in on the mission. Until then, you haven't heard anything about it. <<
She nodded, trying to get rid of her smile as she did so. Then she lifted the box again and took it away.
The next morning we were both called by the sergeant and taken to a briefing room. It was a larger room with an oval table and chairs in the middle, where Luke and a few other generals were sitting. When we entered the room, all eyes fell on us and I suddenly lost my courage. These generals were just waiting to be convinced that me and Becka should go to Earth and no one else. I looked reflexively at Luke, whereupon he pointed to the chairs next to him. Still intimidated by the generals, I stood in the same spot, trying not to look stiff, until Becka suddenly walked over to Luke.
No sooner had I sat down between Becka and Luke, because Becka had left the seat next to him empty, than one of those present rose from his chair and began the meeting >> Now that everyone is present, I'd say we'll get started. General Howard presented his plan for the initiating attack to me last night and I am convinced that this attack will be a success. However, according to Howard, there is one problem with the whole thing and I think you already know what I'm talking about. <<
>> The reptiloids that one of the scouts brought in? << another one made sure.
The standing general nodded in confirmation >> Exactly. Howard's aide, Private Wilson, was able to talk to the two prisoners yesterday and convinced them to reveal their hiding place to us. << he added, looking at me at the end.
Everyone else in the room turned their attention back to me. The general next to the one standing looked at me questioningly >> How did you manage to convince them? <<
>> I tried to negotiate with them. But so far they haven't made any demands. << I said with an assumed calm.
>> Then this is a trap. << interjected another on the far left.
>> I've already thought about that. << Luke suddenly interrupted everyone >> We'll put these two on a shuttle with the lizards and the human and take them to the planet. If this is all a trap after all, we'll teleport them all back. <<
>> You want us to have the teleporter ready for the five people? Do you realize how time-consuming this will be? And you really want to bring back one human and two reptiloids? << the other protested again.
Luke looked at the standing general and he nodded at him. He rose cautiously from his chair >> The whole invasion is at stake because of this race. And aren't the lives of our own people valuable enough to you that you want to leave those two to possible death? Besides, if we leave the three of them on the planet, our cover could be blown. <<
Everyone at the table looked to the one on the far left and he slowly sank into his chair in shame. Then Luke sat back down and looked at me triumphantly and proudly. The standing general then continued >> Howard had suggested to me that these two scouts here be sent to the planet. There are no objections from my side. Does anyone else want to object? << he asked, looking around. No one objected, although I had expected the general on the far left to raise his voice again.
>> Very well. Then the sergeant will lead you two to the shuttle. I would like to explain the exact details to the rest of you so that everyone is on the same page. <<
>> Shouldn't the details have been explained before the mission was approved? << asked the one on the far left.
The one standing rolled his eyes >> It all has to happen quickly. I've already told you the most important things you needed to know in order to judge the mission. <<
He gestured to our sergeant with a glance at us so that he could lead us out of the briefing room.
We had been given replicas of the lizards' armor, which we had put on before we went to the shuttle. Eriny and the two lizards were already waiting for us there. They were strapped in and monitored by some guards until we arrived. The sergeant gave us our watches to teleport with in front of the transport shuttle's boarding ramp and saluted us goodbye.
We entered the small cargo hold and sat down opposite the three of them. They had already received their own watches and were wearing them on their wrists. Becka smiled at Eriny, embarrassed, but he avoided her gaze.
The ramp closed off the cargo hold and the shuttle's engines began to hum. The two pilots in the cockpit put on their headsets and lifted the machine off the ground.
It only took a few hours for us to reach the Earth's atmosphere and still no one had spoken of us. Just a few skeptical looks from the little lizard and a few threatening ones from the big one. The silence was interrupted when one of the pilots spoke to his colleague >> Keep the decoys ready. I'm picking up something. <<
I looked over at Becka and her look was full of concern. I unbuckled my seatbelt and ran forward to the two of them. I tapped one on the shoulder and he looked at me >> Is there a problem? << I asked him.
>> Nothing to worry about, Private. We have everything under ... <<
His sentence was interrupted by a loud bang and an alarm went off from the on-board computer. The shuttle started to shake a lot and we lost altitude very quickly.

Recording No. 11
I stood facing myself with my arms crossed in front of my chest. It must have been another shapeshifter working for the telepath and spying on me. At least that's what I thought, which is why I wanted to dive into his head.
>> Your mental ability doesn't work on yourself. << he said calmly and came closer to me. And I couldn't actually feel or change his feelings. Instead, I was reaching into the void with my ability, but the telepath could have just pushed me aside.
>> Who are you anyway? << I asked with a discontented tone.
But only one corner of his mouth twitched upwards >> I am your conscience. My job is to help you when you're in trouble. <<
>> Compared to everyone else, you have good timing though. And how are you going to help me? <<
As he stood directly in front of me, he calmly leaned back against the wall and lifted one leg to rest it against the wall as well >> By sorting out your thoughts with you. Let's start with the problem itself. What's bothering you right now? <<
I also leaned against the wall and crossed my arms >> If you're really me, you'd already know that. <<
>> It's okay. << he said after a moment >> But why do you have this problem? <<
I looked over at him. He was a perfect copy of myself and yet I was looking for any sign that it might have been someone else. But the look matched mine one to one.
I sighed and looked up before answering him, >> It doesn't feel right to wipe out a species that not only strongly resembles us, but is also innocent. And then too, when my own people lied to us all to force their war propaganda through because they shit all over the previous planet. <<
My so-called conscience laughed out in amusement. I immediately looked at him again and asked irritated >> What do you find so funny? <<
>> What did you find in those people that you should feel bad about? They're nobody, I mean, the most they can do is fly to their own moon and that's it. You've seen their technology and weapons. One snap of the fingers and they're gone. We won't even notice. <<
I raised an eyebrow. The look might be true, but if it had really been me, he would have known about Jenny. It seemed like the telepath in the archive hadn't been looking into my memories, just trying to follow my thought process.
>> Are humans then worth less because their technology is less advanced than ours? <<
My counterpart simply shrugged his shoulders >> I don't know. You tell me. I'm just saying, why should we bother? <<
One corner of my mouth twitched upwards that he had given himself away. Just sit back and push all worries aside. Who had he thought I was?
I pushed away from the wall and put a hand on his shoulder >> Thank you for coming here. I had completely forgotten that I could just relax. <<
He grinned at me with complete satisfaction, even if the grin was completely fake >> You shouldn't overwork yourself either. <<
>> True. And with any luck, these lizards will get under our bullets too. <<
He nodded to that and I ran back to the barracks to lie down on my bed. I'm definitely not going to be able to fall asleep now, I thought to myself. But at least I knew what I had to do. Even if I didn't like taking advantage of Luke and his high position, it was the price I had to pay. For every action there was a reaction and I had to deal with that if I wanted to do the right thing.
I don't know how much sleep I got that night, but it definitely wasn't much. I also had a strange nightmare that I didn't understand for a long time.
The ground beneath my knees was embers and ash mixed with blood. There were soldiers around me, but they were wearing full body armor and I couldn't tell who I was there with. Their armor had many burn marks and scratches and was made of metal.
All of them suddenly pointed their weapons in one direction and held their fingers on the triggers. In my hands was a weapon like the soldiers' and my armor was the same, except I wasn't wearing a helmet. Suddenly everyone started firing and a hellish screeching noise threw me off balance.
There was a wall of black hordes in front of us, moving towards us and even flying towards us. The bodies of the creatures fell one after the other onto the blood and ash-covered ground, but the mass hardly got any smaller. There seemed to be no end to it and it was getting closer and closer to us.
But then a loud and deep rumbling sound emerged from behind the creatures. They all froze and stopped moving. The soldiers stopped firing and waited to see what would happen. My blood froze in my veins and I continued to kneel motionless on the ground. Only a harsh and warm wind blew through the air when a tremor announced itself with a quick hiss and lifted us all two meters off the ground. Countless spears flew at us from the front and pierced us.
I landed on my back on the hot ground and the thick spear pushed out of my chest a little. A sharp pain and an empty feeling in my arms set in as the black creatures marched past my body after only a short time. A figure with red, glowing skin stopped next to me and looked at me. It looked as if lava was flowing down its face and the horns on its head were steaming black soot. Its glaring eyes, which could have been made of fire, looked at me scornfully before turning away from me.
My body quickly buckled upwards and I propped myself up on my bed with my elbows. I was breathing frantically and irregularly and small beads of sweat rolled down my chest. All the other scouts in the barracks were still sleeping peacefully, so I calmed my breathing and my heart started beating more regularly again.
I was about to lie down again and go back to sleep, but then the alarm clock in the room, which was built into the ceiling, sounded. Everyone jumped up unmotivated and prepared to run to the canteen. While some had already left the barracks, I threw my blanket aside and grumpily got up from my bed. It was just a nightmare, nothing more, I thought to myself.
Becka and I sat together at a table and ate breakfast. She had been quiet most of the time, staring sadly at her food. Everyone else in the dining room was talking to each other. Most of them were talking excitedly about getting a new home that they would even fight for. But Becka didn't seem to notice them all and poked around in the plate with her spoon.
I couldn't bear to look at her any longer and was about to say something to her when the sergeant entered the canteen. Silence fell immediately as conversation ceased and all the soldiers in the room stood up and saluted him, to which he replied with a short downward gesture. Then he looked around and called into the canteen >> Private Wilson! Step up! <<
I already realized what he was there for, but Becka and the rest looked to me with sympathetic fear. I put down my spoon and walked to him while everyone else followed me with their gazes. Even though what they were thinking must have been the wrong thing, I liked getting those looks. It felt refreshing to be admired with such respect that I had survived a battle with reptiloids.
The sergeant led me out of the canteen and walked me over to his office. Luke was already there in front of the desk, looking at us as the door opened. I saluted him because the sergeant was with us and Luke grinned.
>> Private, this is General Howard. He's responsible for preparing and coordinating the initiating attack on Earth. And he wants you as his advisor. What do you have to say to that, Private? <<
I quickly thought about whether I really wanted to use him and this position to stop the invasion. But it seemed to me that I had no choice.
>> I accept this position, sir. << I replied in a disciplined voice.
The sergeant nodded and spoke to Luke >> General, good luck with the attack. <<
Luke nodded to him as well and turned to me >> Let's go, Private. We still have a lot to do. <<
