What Does a Canadian Immigration Consultant Do in Canada?
Navigating Canada's complex immigration system can be a daunting task. This is where an immigration consultant steps in. They are professionals who provide guidance and support to individuals and businesses seeking to immigrate to Canada.
Services Provided by Immigration Consultants
Immigration consultants offer various services to assist clients throughout the immigration process.
These include:
· Eligibility Assessment: Evaluating a client's eligibility for different immigration programs based on their qualifications, work experience, and other relevant factors.
· Documentation Preparation: Assisting clients in gathering and preparing the necessary documentation for their immigration applications. This includes forms, financial statements, educational certificates, and supporting documents. · Application Submission: Submitting the completed application to the appropriate immigration authorities on behalf of the client. · Communication with Immigration Authorities: Acting as a liaison between the client and immigration officials, providing updates on the application status, and addressing any queries or requests for additional information. · Case Management: Overseeing the entire immigration process, ensuring all deadlines are met, and providing ongoing support and guidance to the client.
Immigration Consultant vs. Immigration Lawyer
While both Canadian Immigration Consultant and lawyers can assist with immigration matters, there are key differences in their roles and qualifications:
· Legal Representation: Only immigration lawyers can represent clients in immigration court proceedings. Immigration consultants cannot provide legal advice or representation. · Education and Regulation: Immigration lawyers have a law degree and are members of a provincial law society. Immigration consultants are regulated by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CIC) and must complete a specific educational program.
Choosing the Right Professional
When selecting an immigration consultant, it's essential to ensure they are registered with the CIC. This guarantees they have met the required educational and ethical standards. Additionally, consider the consultant's experience, success rate, and client testimonials.
By engaging the services of a qualified immigration consultant, individuals, and businesses can increase their chances of a successful immigration journey while minimizing stress and potential pitfalls.
Remember, the immigration process can be complex, and having an expert by your side can make a significant difference in achieving your goals.

Conclusion
1. Introduction
Canada is constantly evolving its immigration policies to accommodate both the needs of its citizens and those of applicants seeking to make the country their home. In 2024, significant changes were made to the family class sponsorship programs, and these changes are set to continue into 2025. For Canadian citizens and permanent residents seeking to bring their loved ones to Canada, it’s important to stay up-to-date with these changes. Whether you’re looking to sponsor a spouse, parent, or child, these shifts in policy could impact processing times, eligibility, and the number of applicants who can be accepted.
In this blog, we will discuss some of the most crucial changes to Canada’s family class immigration pathways in 2024, and what this means for 2025. If you need expert guidance in navigating these changes, Wave Visas and Wave Immigration Consultant are here to help.
2. Cutback of Family Class Sponsorship Allocations in 2025
One of the most significant changes affecting family sponsorship is the reduction in the number of landings allocated for family class immigration. In 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plans to reduce the targets for family class sponsorships.
Spouses, Partners, and Children: 82,000 landings in 2024 to 70,000 landings in 2025.
Parents and Grandparents: 32,000 landings in 2024 to 24,500 landings in 2025.
This means that fewer applications will be accepted in 2025 compared to 2024, potentially leading to longer wait times for processing family sponsorships. Applicants may experience delays, so it’s crucial to plan ahead and understand how the reduced allocations could affect your application.
3. Changes to Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) Eligibility
In 2024, significant adjustments were made to the eligibility criteria for Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWPs), especially for spouses of international students and temporary foreign workers. Effective from March 2024, spouses of international students are only eligible for a SOWP if the student is enrolled in specific graduate programs, such as master’s or doctoral programs. Similarly, spouses of workers in highly skilled professions, such as engineers and scientists, will have limited eligibility.
IRCC expects these changes to result in a significant decrease in the number of SOWPs issued, with an estimated reduction of 150,000 permits over the next three years. This shift is designed to ensure that Canada’s immigration system is more targeted, but it will impact families seeking to reunite in the country.
4. Changes to Quebec Family Sponsorship
Quebec introduced its own set of changes to family sponsorship pathways in 2024. With increasing demand for family sponsorships and a backlog of applications, Quebec’s Ministry of Immigration imposed a cap on applications for family reunification. Effective June 2024, Quebec will accept only 13,000 family sponsorship applications for the next two years, with the majority allocated to spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children.
These limits are expected to reduce processing delays and maintain a manageable backlog of cases. However, applicants in Quebec should be aware that the cap could impact the processing of their applications if the limit is reached before their submission.
5. Introduction of Advanced Automation for Family Class Sponsorship
In an effort to streamline the processing of family class sponsorship applications, IRCC has introduced new automation tools. These tools use machine learning to assist with the initial stages of application processing, which helps to reduce the time spent on routine reviews. While these tools do not have the authority to approve or deny applications, they are designed to speed up processing and improve overall efficiency.
This is especially beneficial for sponsors applying for spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners. Applicants can expect faster initial reviews, though it’s important to keep in mind that detailed assessments may still require human intervention.
6. Re-opening of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
The highly anticipated Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) re-opened in 2024, offering new opportunities for Canadians to sponsor their parents or grandparents. IRCC invited 35,700 potential sponsors to apply for family sponsorship, with the aim of processing 20,500 applications for permanent residence.
The PGP will continue to open periodically, with invitations issued to those who submitted an “Interest to Sponsor” form in 2020. For many families, this program is a crucial pathway to reunification, and IRCC continues to prioritize processing of these applications.
7. Temporary Resident Pathway for Families of Canadians in Gaza
In response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Canada introduced a temporary resident pathway in 2024 to provide safe haven for the family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are in the region. This pathway is aimed at providing temporary visas for family members of Canadians, including spouses, children, parents, and siblings, allowing them to come to Canada for a period of up to three years.
This initiative is part of Canada’s broader efforts to support those impacted by global conflicts, and it is expected to run until April 2025 or until the cap of 5,000 applicants is reached.
8. New Family Sponsorship Pathway for Sudanese Family Members of Canadians
A new family sponsorship pathway was introduced to support Sudanese citizens who are impacted by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. This program enables Sudanese family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to apply for temporary and permanent residence in Canada. The new measure includes access to open work permits, study permits, and other immigration options for eligible applicants.
This pathway is open until October 2025 and offers a lifeline for many families affected by the crisis in Sudan.

Canada Spouse Visa Requirements
Spousal sponsorship is a top focus in Canada's well-known family reunification policy. The government hopes to bring in more than 80,000 new immigrants a year under the Spousal, Partner, and Children category, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to be reunited with their loved ones. We go over the specific requirements for the Canada Spouse Visa below, as well as how the Aptech Visa may make the application process easier for you. An Overview of Canada's Spouse Visa Spouses, common-law partners, or conjugal partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents can apply for permanent residency under the Canada Spouse Visa. Those who are looking for immigration benefits through marriage alone are not the target audience for our program, which emphasizes sincere relationships. What is the processing time for a Canada Souse Visa? According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), spousal sponsorship applications typically take 12 months to process. Now that post-pandemic delays have been resolved, applicants can use the IRCC tracker to monitor their applications. Who Is Eligible for Sponsorship? One of the following three types of relationships may make you eligible for spousal sponsorship: 1. The spouse: An in-person ceremony legally marries you and your Canadian partner. 2. Common-law Partner: You have lived with your partner for a minimum of 12 months in a row with no major disruptions. 3. Conjugal Partner: If you live outside of Canada and have been dating for more than a year but are unable to get married because of legal, cultural, or religious restrictions. In every situation, the person being sponsored needs to: Be present at
Be at least eighteen.
Clear background checks for criminal, security, and medical issues.
What are the Sponsor’s eligibility requirements? To sponsor their partner, the Canadian citizen or permanent resident needs to fulfil the following requirements:
Be at least eighteen.
Possess either Indigenous status under the Canadian Indian Act, citizenship, or permanent residency in Canada.
Social assistance, excluding disability benefits, is not being received.
Show that you have the money to sustain the sponsored partner for three years.
On the other hand, permanent residents must be in Canada during sponsorship and demonstrate an intent to return to Canada upon approval of the sponsorship.
What is the Spousal Sponsorship Application Process?
The steps that will comprise the said application process are as follows:
1. Download the application package from the IRCC website.
2. Pay the Fees: The Fees Should Be Paid: Include the processing fee, the biometrics fee, and the right of permanent residence fee.
3. Submit Applications: Applications for permanent residence and sponsorship should be submitted simultaneously.
The sponsored individual, after selection, becomes a permanent resident, but he/she is barred from sponsoring another partner for five years.

do you have any tips about getting PR in canada, i'm trying to figure this out with my gf who lives in america (also idv edaters. unfortunately)
WE WERE NOT IDV EDATERS SCREAMMMMM you should have just kicked sand in my eyes. i begged him to play idv with me he wouldnt cos he was scared. anyway.
unfortunately my tips are very limited as ive been 'done' with the bullshit for over a year now. and like immigration lawyers literally get paid thousands cause its so complicated :( like not in a 'pay me' way but like its an insane feat to pull off without professional help. that and pr shit is changing all the time so im sure a lot of what i experienced is outdated
i spent like 1.5 years no exaggeration in the pr RESEARCH mines (mostly on r/immigrationcanada) and honestly i still felt like i was learning new shit right up until the day i submitted my application. and then more and more after i had submitted it. its really really hard unfortunately. i really advise asking/searching for questions on that subreddit whenever possible, there are a lot of people who can help when youre unsure.
if it wasnt clear you have to be married to apply for the spousal sponsorship, which as far as I understand is pretty much how most american to ca prships happen. if you (when i say you i mean your american girl bc thats the perspective im coming from) happen to have a skilled job (the canadian gov website has a key to determine if your job classifies as skilled) then I believe there is another route, but I wasn't eligible so idk shit about that. dont bother looking into whether you qualify as common law or conjugal or whatever bc you very very likely dont meet their standards. i got married in the states a week before crossing the border, your marriage certificate would be valid in canada
off the bat i would say, unless you know for sure your living situation would 100% COMPLETELY PROVIDE FOR YOU for 6 months to a year, then you should probably apply for an OUTLAND spousal sponsorship. if you move in together in canada and apply for INLAND spousal sponsorship then you cannot work period, there is no legal way for you to make any cent of income. you will not be eligible for provincial healthcare, so i recommend getting long term travel insurance (i rec geoblue). the border is a whole other ordeal if you don't have any status in canada, you can't look like you're moving (i.e no moving boxes no tons of luggage) you can't look like you're eloping or staying for more than a couple months and even if you do everything right they still may suspect you and deny you entry. i did inland and it was really really difficult and at times scary for these reasons, i did not exactly do some things by the book in order to get by *WINKKK*. if you can stand to get married and then part for upwards of a year then i would really really suggest the outland route. unless youll be provided for then GOOD FOR YOU *shaking fist* random but americans also have to continue filing us taxes even if they have moved out of country. so remember that.
moreso tips umm DOCUMENT EVERYTHINGGG YOU DO TOGETHER this is my biggest piece of advice. you have to prove your relationship is legit, here is a list of stuff i included in my application:
receipts/the route we took for our honeymoon
screenshots of support from relatives, like facebook or other social media posts acknowledging your relationship
we got our wills done to make each other the sole benefactor
receipts and pictures of gifts weve gotten each other
photos of both of you with friends and family is 100% required
proof of past visits to each other
receipts and pics for past dates/outings/events
letters of support from family/friends (i got these notarized)
lots of stuff from online chat logs/social media. pictures of chats, phone calls, video calls from across years. i think i included at least one of each from every month since we got together. chats should be relevant to relationship stuff like discussing moving in, getting married, relatives, etc.
a letter detailing our relationship with exact dates, locations, etc. like when we met, when we started dating, when we visited, how we got engaged, etc. you have to make a case for yourself as if you were in court.
if youre researching stuff there is honestly not a lot of resources specifically for edaters! so many people like have like children together in another country or have been established there as a married couples for years so they have a ton of foundation to work off of. canada doesnt just want to see that youre in love they want to see the work that goes into that, like shared leases and joint bank accounts and years of financial support and children etc etc. it sucks but you have to justify it in other ways when youre (im assuming) young and childless and unmarried until recently. you can get some of those things once you move in together but idk, i was rather safe than sorry an scrounged up all the 'soft' evidence i could right up until i submitted it.
i think thats about it i wish i could help more lol. its definitely one of the hardest things ive had to do like emotionally financially temporally effortfully lmfao. good luck?!
